#FLedchat is a virtual meeting place using Twitter. Educators across the state of Florida come together on Wednesdays at 8pm EST to discuss the topics of the week.
I am Justin Schleider #physed and #healthed T. My favorite thing about my school is we are small enough that I get to know every ss and what motivates them.
#fledchat
Hey all! I'm Kali, a kinder teacher from Clearwater. My favorite thing about my school is the amazing community we have-teachers, students, and parents included #FLEdChat
Q1: The affective domain describes learning objectives that emphasize a feeling tone, an emotion, or a degree of acceptance or rejection. The saying goes we assess what we care about? Why should we be assessing the affective domain?
#fledchat
Just great support whenever it's needed. There's always someone there to help out. I noticed it most when I came in as a new teacher. They totally just took me in. #FLEdChat
A1 affective domain is the foundation of our Ss in realting to us and their peersn if there's an absence, misunderstanding and conflict occurs. These should be taught with intent and purpose #FLedChat
Yes if they can't relate to each other is anything else as important? Can we live in a silo without contact and interaction? We crave that as humans. #fledchat
A1 You have to care about something to buy-in. That goes for the classroom community and the content we teach. Our emotions control more than we give them credit for #FLEdChat

Q2: Responding is actively participating in or interacting with the new information. How do we get our ss to be a part of the learning especially when they are resistant to the subject material?
#fledchat#physed
Affective ... wouldn't say I would assess how a student values a topic for a grade, but understanding how students feel ... or their values helps me adapt my activity to make a deeper connection #FLedchat
A2 I'm blessed to teach K where Ss think all days are the best day ever. But it helps to find a way to make it relevant and build the understanding that you won't love everything in life, but that doesn't mean it's not important. #FLEdChat
A2 try to present the subject material that is relevant to them and would make learning meaningful, getting to know our Ss interests help a lot, boils down to developing relationship with them #FLedChat

Knowing what is relevant to the students is paramount. If we are making statements they can't connect with we have lost a major part of our teaching.
#fledchat
A2: relationships are key and finding their interests and incorporating it into you classrm. Helping them find that spark especially on ES is critical #fledchat
not participating doesn't necessarily mean they don't like the subject matter or are not learning ... sometimes they just don't like to participate ... does that make them bad students? #fledchat taking a Social Studies perspective ...
Q3: Receiving is being aware of or sensitive to the existence of certain ideas, material, or phenomena and being willing to tolerate them. How do we set up this culture in our class?
#fledchat
I think some of that comes with knowing your Ss, but I do little quick checks throughout a lesson-turn and talks, exit tickets, digital journal responses, so that they don't always need to speak out to be seen/heard #FLEdChat

A3 we talk a lot about respectfully disagreeing. We don't all think the same and that's ok, but you still have to listen and be respectful of opinions
#FLEdChat
A3 we have our class so that content is discovered more by the ss than delivered by the teacher. This allows ideas to be authentically experienced. It's not my ideas vs yours.
#fledchat
How do we define "participation" ... my goal is for them to learn ... i have sat in classes as a student and never said a word ... i have students who do the same ... i chat with them ... they have their reasons #fledchat
Doesn't make them bad Ss. Also don't assume they don't like/want to participate. It may be the method of participation they don't like. #FLedChat#QuietKidsCount
We can define it any way you want. If they sit there and never say a word that is not good enough for me. Teaching is more than being able to fill out a cognitive test.
#fledchat
Q4:
Valuing is willing to be perceived by others as valuing certain ideas, materials, or phenomena. How do we show our ss our values when we teach?
#fledchat
True! In my MOOC with @VGoodyear last year we call them competent bystander. Goes down to knowing them and understanding their individual personalities #FLedChat
In reply to
@DennisDill, @SchleiderJustin, @VGoodyear
Sentence starters help "I hear what you're saying" "I disagree because" And also building a culture to seek to understand each others' POV. Morning meetings have helped with this alot #FLEdChat

A4 We show our passion. My private life is not separate from teaching. When we understand that we teach the whole child we as teachers have to show our whole selves as well. It's a two way street
#fledchat
so basically what you are saying is that if a learner can complete the activity ... know all the information ... but not "participate" in manner predetermined by the teacher than they are not learning the correct way? What happened to differentiation? #fledchat
A4 Our enthusiasm and body language says a lot. When I work with coding club, I'm borderline giddy because I'm passionate about it. Not so much when I teach letter sounds...Fake it til you make it? #FLEdChat

I have kids who will have engaging thoughts and answers written in front of them, but won't participate in a discussion ... write an awesome script, but won't narrate a video. #fledchat
If they can show mastery of the standard than they are going to pass some classes. My class we have affective standards. That's why #physed is the only subject that can truly teach the whole child. It;s a huge weakness for classroom teachers. #fledchat
Seriously? Not sure if you are being sarcastic here. There are lots of ways to participate besides "filling out a cognitive test." #FLedChat#QuietKidsCount
Q5 Organization is fitting the new information into existing schema and deciding how the new information makes sense for you. How do we use the idea of organization outside of the cognitive domain?
#fledchat
I know my kids ... I know who needs what and how to get them to a different level ... most of the time it has nothing to do with any type of standard. #fledchat
A5 Once we have identified new behaviors or interactions that are productive we address those and then discuss how we can use them in the future.
#fledchat
Q6: Characterization is the making the new information part of your schema and exhibiting new behavior, attitude or belief. How do we exhibit this change?
#fledchat
A6 We ask ss what changes need to be made in the class. We then make those changes either in our behavior or actions. They see this. It has now become a new part of us.
