  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:06 PM EST
Q1: The affective domain describes learning objectives that emphasize a feeling tone, an emotion, or a degree of acceptance or rejection. The saying goes we assess what we care about? Why should we be assessing the affective domain? #fledchat
  • KopkasKinders Feb 21 @ 8:06 PM EST
Just great support whenever it's needed. There's always someone there to help out. I noticed it most when I came in as a new teacher. They totally just took me in. #FLEdChat
    In reply to @SchleiderJustin
  • carr_8 Feb 21 @ 8:07 PM EST
Ss and Ps know which areas within s content they are doing well, may need extra assistance. #fledchat
    In reply to @SchleiderJustin
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:07 PM EST
having a good supportive system is the bees knees #fledchat

  • rizzapiccio Feb 21 @ 8:08 PM EST
A1 affective domain is the foundation of our Ss in realting to us and their peersn if there's an absence, misunderstanding and conflict occurs. These should be taught with intent and purpose #FLedChat
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:09 PM EST
A1. The statement says it all. If we don't assess the affective domain we are showing we don't value it enough to spend time on. #physed #fledchat
  • DennisDill Feb 21 @ 8:09 PM EST
Hey #FLedchat ... it is me ... I teach at a wicked cool school ...
  • rizzapiccio Feb 21 @ 8:09 PM EST
That's great for you! Your school culture is encouraging! #FLedChat
    In reply to @KopkasKinders, @SchleiderJustin
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:10 PM EST
Yes if they can't relate to each other is anything else as important? Can we live in a silo without contact and interaction? We crave that as humans. #fledchat
    In reply to @rizzapiccio
  • KopkasKinders Feb 21 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1 You have to care about something to buy-in. That goes for the classroom community and the content we teach. Our emotions control more than we give them credit for #FLEdChat
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:12 PM EST
This idea of a mind/body/brain separation is false. We don't operate in boxes. #fledchat
    • KopkasKinders Feb 21 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1 You have to care about something to buy-in. That goes for the classroom community and the content we teach. Our emotions control more than we give them credit for #FLEdChat
  • KopkasKinders Feb 21 @ 8:13 PM EST
#thingsIlearnedfrom yoga lol Mindfulness is a hot topic at my school right now, especially with our gifted population #FLEdChat
    In reply to @SchleiderJustin
  • carr_8 Feb 21 @ 8:13 PM EST
A1: This is a key to our Ss foundation and educators shld be investing in this.#fledchat
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:13 PM EST
Q2: Responding is actively participating in or interacting with the new information. How do we get our ss to be a part of the learning especially when they are resistant to the subject material? #fledchat #physed
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:15 PM EST
A2 Ask them why they aren't participating. That will always be the number step. From there you gauge what the next step should be. #FLedChat #physed
  • rizzapiccio Feb 21 @ 8:15 PM EST
Absolutely! But in todays educ system, we put too much weight on acads and less on these domains ☹ #FLedChat
    In reply to @SchleiderJustin
  • DennisDill Feb 21 @ 8:15 PM EST
Affective ... wouldn't say I would assess how a student values a topic for a grade, but understanding how students feel ... or their values helps me adapt my activity to make a deeper connection #FLedchat
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:16 PM EST
What do you value enough to grade? #fledchat
    In reply to @DennisDill
  • KopkasKinders Feb 21 @ 8:16 PM EST
A2 I'm blessed to teach K where Ss think all days are the best day ever. But it helps to find a way to make it relevant and build the understanding that you won't love everything in life, but that doesn't mean it's not important. #FLEdChat
  • rizzapiccio Feb 21 @ 8:16 PM EST
A2 try to present the subject material that is relevant to them and would make learning meaningful, getting to know our Ss interests help a lot, boils down to developing relationship with them #FLedChat
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:17 PM EST
Ahhh the make it relevant part will be coming up shortly!!! That is a key no doubt about it #fledchat
    In reply to @KopkasKinders
  • rizzapiccio Feb 21 @ 8:18 PM EST
So true! It actually starts with what we value as well #FLedChat
    • KopkasKinders Feb 21 @ 8:16 PM EST

  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:18 PM EST
Knowing what is relevant to the students is paramount. If we are making statements they can't connect with we have lost a major part of our teaching. #fledchat
    In reply to @rizzapiccio
  • carr_8 Feb 21 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2: relationships are key and finding their interests and incorporating it into you classrm. Helping them find that spark especially on ES is critical #fledchat
  • DennisDill Feb 21 @ 8:19 PM EST
not participating doesn't necessarily mean they don't like the subject matter or are not learning ... sometimes they just don't like to participate ... does that make them bad students? #fledchat taking a Social Studies perspective ...
    In reply to @SchleiderJustin
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:20 PM EST
If we can't make those relationships how can we tailor our class to our ss? #fledchat
    In reply to @carr_8
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:21 PM EST
Not participating means they aren't participating in the learning. My job is to find out why. My goal is always 100% participation #fledchat
    In reply to @DennisDill
  • KopkasKinders Feb 21 @ 8:21 PM EST
True. There are definitely some who prefer to sit back and observe. As long as they're still mentally engaged I'm ok with it. #FLEdChat
    In reply to @DennisDill, @SchleiderJustin
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:22 PM EST
Q3: Receiving is being aware of or sensitive to the existence of certain ideas, material, or phenomena and being willing to tolerate them. How do we set up this culture in our class? #fledchat
  • carr_8 Feb 21 @ 8:22 PM EST
I would find a T that Ss interacts with and ask them if not, I was ask the P. I teach ES. #FLedChat
    In reply to @SchleiderJustin
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:22 PM EST
How do you tell if they are mentally engaged? #fledchat
    In reply to @KopkasKinders, @DennisDill
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:23 PM EST
Great advice! Who do they bond with? That is where that whole school approach is clutch! You will gain info that can help you for sure #fledchat
    In reply to @carr_8
  • KopkasKinders Feb 21 @ 8:24 PM EST
I think some of that comes with knowing your Ss, but I do little quick checks throughout a lesson-turn and talks, exit tickets, digital journal responses, so that they don't always need to speak out to be seen/heard #FLEdChat
    In reply to @SchleiderJustin, @DennisDill
  • rizzapiccio Feb 21 @ 8:24 PM EST
True! Although it's a challenge, we strive hard to make it relevant and meaningful #FLedChat
    In reply to @SchleiderJustin
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:25 PM EST
Awesome! @TheConnectedEdu does a lot of work with how to include the #quitevoices in our classes. Checking in is vital #fledchat
    • KopkasKinders Feb 21 @ 8:24 PM EST

  • KopkasKinders Feb 21 @ 8:26 PM EST
A3 we talk a lot about respectfully disagreeing. We don't all think the same and that's ok, but you still have to listen and be respectful of opinions #FLEdChat
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:26 PM EST
A3 we have our class so that content is discovered more by the ss than delivered by the teacher. This allows ideas to be authentically experienced. It's not my ideas vs yours. #fledchat
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:27 PM EST
What are some tips that we can use to help our ss respectfully disagree? #fledchat
    In reply to @KopkasKinders
  • DennisDill Feb 21 @ 8:27 PM EST
How do we define "participation" ... my goal is for them to learn ... i have sat in classes as a student and never said a word ... i have students who do the same ... i chat with them ... they have their reasons #fledchat
    In reply to @SchleiderJustin
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:28 PM EST
Yes amen to that #quietkidscount #fledchat
  • carr_8 Feb 21 @ 8:28 PM EST
I have to run, but thanks for letting jump in and for @SchleiderJustin for an amazing discussion #fledchat
  • TheConnectedEdu Feb 21 @ 8:29 PM EST
Doesn't make them bad Ss. Also don't assume they don't like/want to participate. It may be the method of participation they don't like. #FLedChat #QuietKidsCount
    In reply to @DennisDill, @SchleiderJustin
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:29 PM EST
We can define it any way you want. If they sit there and never say a word that is not good enough for me. Teaching is more than being able to fill out a cognitive test. #fledchat
    In reply to @DennisDill
  • DennisDill Feb 21 @ 8:30 PM EST
i talk with them ... i read their body language ... i look at what they have completed. #fledchat
    In reply to @SchleiderJustin, @KopkasKinders
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:30 PM EST
Q4: Valuing is willing to be perceived by others as valuing certain ideas, materials, or phenomena. How do we show our ss our values when we teach? #fledchat
  • rizzapiccio Feb 21 @ 8:30 PM EST
True! In my MOOC with @VGoodyear last year we call them competent bystander. Goes down to knowing them and understanding their individual personalities #FLedChat
    In reply to @DennisDill, @SchleiderJustin, @VGoodyear
  • KopkasKinders Feb 21 @ 8:31 PM EST
Sentence starters help "I hear what you're saying" "I disagree because" And also building a culture to seek to understand each others' POV. Morning meetings have helped with this alot #FLEdChat
    In reply to @SchleiderJustin
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:31 PM EST
The competent bystander is something we all should be aware of. The ss who learn how to slip in the cracks. #fledchat
    • rizzapiccio Feb 21 @ 8:30 PM EST

Lovely! Do you play a lot games in morning meeting? #fledchat
    In reply to @KopkasKinders
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:33 PM EST
A4 We show our passion. My private life is not separate from teaching. When we understand that we teach the whole child we as teachers have to show our whole selves as well. It's a two way street #fledchat
  • DennisDill Feb 21 @ 8:34 PM EST
so basically what you are saying is that if a learner can complete the activity ... know all the information ... but not "participate" in manner predetermined by the teacher than they are not learning the correct way? What happened to differentiation? #fledchat
    In reply to @SchleiderJustin
  • KopkasKinders Feb 21 @ 8:35 PM EST
A4 Our enthusiasm and body language says a lot. When I work with coding club, I'm borderline giddy because I'm passionate about it. Not so much when I teach letter sounds...Fake it til you make it? #FLEdChat
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:35 PM EST
My activities can't be completed by sitting alone. Socialization and interapersonal wellness are a skill that needs to be taught as well. #fledchat
    In reply to @DennisDill
  • rizzapiccio Feb 21 @ 8:35 PM EST
I love this Kali! Taking a SS to print out later and introduce in my classes later today #FLedChat

We try. Sometimes it's just a silly GoNoodle video or fun song/greeting but I'm always looking for new ideas. #FLEdChat

A4 we model the values we want to instill consistently, never miss a chance when there's an opportunity to put emphasis when needed #FLedChat
  • DennisDill Feb 21 @ 8:37 PM EST
I have kids who will have engaging thoughts and answers written in front of them, but won't participate in a discussion ... write an awesome script, but won't narrate a video. #fledchat
    In reply to @TheConnectedEdu, @SchleiderJustin

If they can show mastery of the standard than they are going to pass some classes. My class we have affective standards. That's why #physed is the only subject that can truly teach the whole child. It;s a huge weakness for classroom teachers. #fledchat
    In reply to @DennisDill, @TheConnectedEdu
  • TheConnectedEdu Feb 21 @ 8:38 PM EST
Seriously? Not sure if you are being sarcastic here. There are lots of ways to participate besides "filling out a cognitive test." #FLedChat #QuietKidsCount

  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:39 PM EST
That's my point! participation can come in a variety of ways. #fledchat
    In reply to @TheConnectedEdu, @DennisDill
  • KopkasKinders Feb 21 @ 8:39 PM EST
absolutely. Children see so much, even when we think they aren't watching #FLEdChat

Q5 Organization is fitting the new information into existing schema and deciding how the new information makes sense for you. How do we use the idea of organization outside of the cognitive domain? #fledchat
  • DennisDill Feb 21 @ 8:41 PM EST
really ... #PhysEd is the only subject that can teach the whole child ... that is a bit presumptuous ... #FLEdChat

A5 Once we have identified new behaviors or interactions that are productive we address those and then discuss how we can use them in the future. #fledchat
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:46 PM EST
Q6: Characterization is the making the new information part of your schema and exhibiting new behavior, attitude or belief. How do we exhibit this change? #fledchat
  • SchleiderJustin Feb 21 @ 8:47 PM EST
A6 We ask ss what changes need to be made in the class. We then make those changes either in our behavior or actions. They see this. It has now become a new part of us. #fledchat
