Hi there. Kristin, from MA - 7th grade science. My go to pot-luck dish to bring is some Chinese food on the way. The dish I stand next to most is the guacamole. #scitlap
Hello, my name is Xiomara. My favorite potluck dish is bonco popcorn. Its a sweet treat that includes popcorn, almond bars, dry roasted peanuts, peanut butter and rice crips.#scitlap
Hi there! I am Lauren from North Carolina and I am still in school, working on my elementary ed degree. My favorite potluck dish would have to be mac and cheese! #scitlap
A1 I want to take the kids outside this year and have them calculate their own speed when walking, running and jogging. It was 60 today, and tomorrow it is snowing. #scitlap
A1)We've had some peeks of weather. It hit 80 degrees in the afternoon for a couple of days. Trees in bloom everywhere. Just started growing Fast Plants to correspond to the weather #SciTLAP
A1) I've told kids to observe tree blossoms that have already hit the pavement and driveways. Maybe I'll have them do a padlet HW assignment of pics of blooming trees... #davis7#SciTLAP
A1: I'm excited to collect weather data with my 1st graders. Morning and afternoon temperatures to look for pattenrs. @BSCSorg@JBintzBSCS#scitlap We are going outside!
#scitlap A1. One lesson I am looking forward to teaching when the weather gets warmer is life cycles. With spring approaching students will be able to observe the life cycle of plants and animals.
I am currently in the process of getting my Elem Edu degree. A1: I am not a teacher yet, but as a student I absolutely loved when my teacher was able to incorporate outside activities. Learning was much more enjoyable! #scitlap
Q3: written by @PerkyScience How do you support your kids as they grow through the tough parts of learning? #scitlap (It's so much easier to give into them.)
A2 better storage and organization of supplies. Always have to search for lab materials and usually end up just buying them rather than search #scitlap
If I could redesign my science lab i would add higher tables, flexible seating options and cabinets under each table station. The cabinets would hold equipment for students to use to conduct experiments. #scitlap
A3 I try to build in opportunities for movement, videos and group work. It is easier sometimes to get them to come with you if you all go together and have fun along the way. #scitlap
A3 I try to build from their strengths and vary my strategies and create opportunities for kinesthetic learning, rhythm and music, lots of visuals but also acknowledge the value of meaningful struggle #scitlap
Q3-Lots of patience and practice. Did a lab yesterday that started off a little dicey, then they got the hang of it. If I’d have flipped about the mistakes I would have shut it down in first 5 minutes. Definitely patience! #scitlap
A3 @MrsAsztalosand@SciTeach7Davis Curriculum is sometimes the least of their worries. Middle school is pretty tough. You gotta just be there for them. #scitlap
A3: I find assuring students that I care for them helps them push through the hard parts. I encourage the effort and praise kids that put ideas out there. #scitlap
A3: When in math, I walk them through it step by step. Make sure they know why they are doing what they are doing. The rest take off and check in. For full inclusion reasons but they all benefit. For sci it’s lore adaptive tools, screen reader, etc. #scitlap
A4 Have actually been thinking about this. Thinking about something with cells, but I'm a bit behind in my pacing guide. Looking forward to what you all have to share. #scitlap
A4) I did an "ecology of Georgia" bracket contest one year. Based on random assignments, kids research, then class votes. But this #2018MMM takes it to a whole different level #SciTLAP
I just discovered it this week on twitter. You should def sign up to request the bracket and other info. If you don't use it, you might share with a colleague. #scitlap
A4) Quote from the emailed info: A preliminary exploration of the information provided from the ongoing survey: 950+ Educators requested advance brackets & 400+ have used MMM in the classroom in previous years. #scitlap#2018MMM
Treats at weekly staff mtg when we celebrate staff birthdays. Some walk weekly. We have a GroupMe & a private staff FB page. Sure whats goin on! #scitlap
A5: Celebrating each other's successes, even when small and when hey do not mean anything outside our building (i.e. You got __ to write his name on the paper!) #scitlap
A5 I have been called "Pollyanna" by some in my school & district, so maybe it's my look towards the bright side? (Or my playing devil's advocate.) #scitlap
A5 Get out of your room, get out of your bubble, mingle, visit, do fun things outside of school. Send out sweet tweets about their awesomeness! #scitlap
Literally the reason that I became a teacher and why I love teaching where I am at. I know that at least from 5th grade on they are getting a solid science foundation. #scitlap
A5 I’m lucky to have a team that gets along really well and weathers the storm together. We all make small gestures to remind each other that we are in this together. We laugh a lot... we have to 😊 #scitlap
A6: We have a new teacher induction (BTSA), but it is unfortunately not very good :( Other than that, a new teacher hopes to land on a team with good mentors, but if not they are pretty much on their own. #scitlap
I asked this question because I am currently mentoring an awesome new teacher. I have to say it feels a lot more like collaborating then mentoring. It's been a great year because of that! #scitlap
A6 unfortunately, not much, it is really left up to grade level teams to provide support which is great if you have a strong cohesive time, some aren’t so lucky. 😕#scitlap
A6) There's been much shifting around grade levels and many of us feel "new" with at least one class/grade level. Can be unsettling to feel new when you've been in a school for 12 years. #scitlap
A6 NYS schools are required to have a mentoring program. I am a mentor this year to the new 7th grade life sci teacher. I am now an elder in my school. #scitlap
Q7: What is the talk at your school about the March 14th walk outs? How are you supporting kids that walk? How are you supporting kids that don't? How do you discuss big issues? #scitlap
Yes! I changed grades/teams, subjects, & schools 3 times in 6 yrs. No mentoring for me because I'm an experienced educator. Thank goodness for teammates! #scitlap
I think the fact that we have a brandy new curriculum, we are both starting New and we both bring different things to the table. Also, were both kind of tech-geeks. #scitlap
A6) As I read the common "not so much", this is one of the reasons I push new teachers to be proactive in Social Media to grow their #PLN. Participating in Twitter chats (even if just reading through) and joining @edmodo. That is where I've found my mentors. #scitlap
A7 It's kinda weird, but not much talk at 7th grade level. I personally support any one truly protesting and making a stand. I'm so proud of students who try to make a difference. Emma Gonzalez is an inspiration. I let the PC stuff stop me from talking a little though. #scitlap
A7: Crickets from my middle schoolers (5-8), thus any walkouts have not been addressed. However the teachers and district are planning to at least have minutes of silence to go along. #scitlap
