Hello everyone! Excited for tonight's chat
Hi! Alexis, 2nd-5th Grade Edtech/Comp Sci Specialist from South Florida! Bracing for this storm! 💦💨
Hi ! I'm Todd from Illinois, PhD student. I like to destroy in shuffleboard.
I'm Vicky from the Los Angeles area. I teach K-8 technology and am working on using the 2016 CSTA standards w/my classes.
Glad you're here but be safe! When's it supposed to hit. Are you using any specific standards now?
Welcome Alexis! So glad you could joins us tongight :)
Hi. Using the combination of our districts scope and sequence along with the new ISTE standards
Does your district have a specific computer science scope & sequence?
Hey Grant! Glad you are here!
Using the standards! Really focusing on computational thinking skills. Storm should hit tomorrow pm.
Your district has a CS scope and sequence for k-8?
Hi! Ingrid from Cambridge, MA. We have our own technology learning expectations, but have been using CSTA standards in past
Technology use and mastery
Have you seen the Interim 2016 standards?
The chat is a structured chat which means questions will be numbered Q1 for Question 1, Q2 for Question 2, etc.
Answers should start with A1 for the answer to Q1, A2 to answer Q2, etc. matching the question being answered.
If you don’t have the Interim 2016 CSTA K-12 CS Standards document open, you might want to do that now. https://t.co/46uizUYud2
yes, but haven't looked at them closely yet
Tonight will be your chance!
Hey ! Jumping in a little late to learn more about the CS standards! Amanda, math/tech ToSA in CA
If your school/district/state, etc. has their own CS standards, share about those & include links as appropriate. Thanks!
Ready to learn together & brainstorm ideas on implementing the standards? Question #1 is coming right up.
Q1: How are you or might you teach the Computing Systems standards? Anything you would add? Questions you have?
Where are you in CA? I'm in SF
Just down the street in Campbell!
Welcome Amanda! Better late than never :)
Welcome, glad you are here.
For 2-C-4-12: Start with Arduino/physical components of systems, then broaden to look for similar components in everyday technologies
A1: give Ss challenges with bugs and have them solve to ! Search online -- tons of games exist already!
A1: I always do a fun external parts of the computer review w/1st using Bee-Bots. 1A-C-7-10
A1: For 2-C-4-12: Start w Arduino/physical components of systems, then broaden to look for similar components in everyday technologies
A1: Can also use to discuss built-in components of tablets and phones and link to associated functionality
Love debugging but it's not really Computing Systems. It is definitely an Algorithms & Programs standard though!
Great idea to have them look for examples after application.
A1 I'm a fan of take-apart projects, tinkering projects, for students to learn hardware names
A1: At all levels (ES/MS/HS), students should dissect computers! Fun and informative.
Hey Ingrid! Good to see you again!
Yes, me too! https://t.co/cZV3pR9TPl
A1 I'm a fan of take-apart projects, tinkering projects, for students to learn hardware names
Parents love this too! Great stuff to do at family nights.
Yes, that's been really useful to breakdown the different parts of tablets/phones!
A1 I agree with tinkering.
Great resource! Thanks for sharing BT!
now that I reread it, I assume it's focused more on hardware debugging!
The first standard is, yes, there is more than one in the Computing Systems area.
A1: I've seen teachers create debugging flowcharts to help with hardware and networking problems, working to dev independent skills
The Practices can happen (and hopefully do) across concept areas.
Question 2 is about the Networks and the Internet standards. Be watching for it & open https://t.co/nfEq2itXke to see the standards.
Question 2 is about the Networks and the Internet standards. Be watching for it & open https://t.co/alQ5DvYIGI to see the standards.
Q2: Do you have ideas/resources/lessons for teaching the Networks and the Internet standards? Anything missing? Questions?
yes I saw, it was just the one I referenced for my answer ;).
Q2: Do you have ideas/resources/lessons for teaching the Networks and the Internet standards? Anything missing? Questions?
I had my MS students do this.
Hi happy to be here, Letty Kindergarten Tt
A2: I keep my eyes open for current events re: 2-N-7-25 & try to bring discussions in around those.
Networking is tough to teach in k-8! unplugged lessons help tremendously.
Love it! Do you have protocols for current events discussions or assignments?
Glad to see you Letty. We're talking about the Networks and the Internet standards right now. https://t.co/46uizUYud2
I was going to use the same exact reference for my answer! is my go-to for intro all standards!
Rather "ate" his internet!
Sometimes, I'll post something on a class blog & have Ss comment OR will paste the article in a gDoc & have commenting.
A1 You can often get old computers for disassembly from your school district's tech department.
A1 And if you can't (even if you can), this is a great video showing the disassembly of a phone: https://t.co/KKkPhLSpbj
Some government offices will give them away as well. #
Yes, and also some computer repair shops -- they're usually quite accommodating!
Since 1A-N-2-16 is about using networks to connect, a Skype call w/another class is a great way to introduce the power of the Internet
A1: Finalizing physical computing project for grade 3 to begin next wk... will align nicely w/1BC79 & 1BA54 are going to
What are your students doing exactly? Are you using or developing curriculum?
A2 internet and networks was introduced when my Kinder Ss received their iPads. I did an intro to devices & we learned how iPads comm.
Next up, question 3 about Algorithms & Programs standards. Please have the standards document open https://t.co/46uizUYud2
A1 Local universities also.
A2: we recreated our own network and talked about making connections to intro the year w/ yarn! https://t.co/xPbJpHsqSa
Great time to do this! https://t.co/t1Z3Sdvk6F
A2 internet and networks was introduced when my Kinder Ss received their iPads. I did an intro to devices & we learned how iPads comm.
Q3: Please share ideas, resources, lessons for meeting the Algorithms & Programs standards. Any questions about these standards?
I love doing this with yarn. They end up going "hey that's why it's the World Wide Web. :)
Oops--although realizing one of those standards is Algorithms... lrning doc as we go right now :)
A2 There's a great video series on the Internet created by a class at MIT currently on display at -- hoping to share these!
I use online community as first way to make a global connection! Search & remix a project, give credit!
yes it was it was easier for them to grasp the idea plus I could integrate commands
Don't know where to find the standards we are talking about? Check here https://t.co/46uizUYud2 https://t.co/wQpgpVFfRE
Q3: Please share ideas, resources, lessons for meeting the Algorithms & Programs standards. Any questions about these standards?
100%! Also a nice SEL moment too. makes good people, not just good programmers.
In , our MS students are designing and implementing apps that help others. See our project guidebook https://t.co/MDdB7W5LTT
What platforms are people using for coding these days? Is it mostly Scratch with 3rd-5th?
Awesome. I'm excited to take a look. Thanks!
I agree that it is as well but we need to make sure to talk about why they are important from a CS view as well, IMO
I use PreK-1 2-5 and MS starts 6th Grade then JavaScript etc. important to have consistency!
Still very new, so we're working to develop teacher resources and revise based on T feedback
This is a MUST DOWNLOAD for all MS Students and Teachers!
Those are often in a grey area between CS and . Happy Cyber Security Awareness month by the way :)
Thanks for this. I am going to show the Principal tomorrow.
I also did a tiny bit of Python w/4th last yr. Going to try to do more this yr.
A3 some of my favorite have been letter formation, shapes, plant life cycle, nursery songs 4 friends 2 solve as they follow algorithm
Do you have students create planning documents for all programming projects? My Ss do for large projects but not all.
What an amazing resource - thanks for sharing. Looks like a lot of thoughtful work went into it
What does this look like?
Same. Though, I wish we did it even more. It often gives way to time for actual programming.
Same here. I need to rethink that.
Sorry team -- I have to roll! Till next time!
Looking for apps aligned to the Algorithms & Programs standards, Swift Playgrounds has info on alignment https://t.co/aPLF3qaYdX
I use Google Classroom as a way to document/communicate design process.
Apple just released Swift playground where Ss can also create apps, check it out
I have them create storyboards of what they will do before they start. Will share some links in a minute.
I do have Ss use planning docs for coding projects. Sometimes use a Google Form so I have their plans.
Thanks for stopping in and sharing all those resources!
Been dying to check this out! Hoping to find some play time soon!
Almost time for question 4 about the Data & Analysis standards. Be sure to have the standards document open https://t.co/alQ5DvYIGI
Almost time for question 4 about the Data & Analysis standards. Be sure to have the standards document open https://t.co/u148Swyfq9
Q4: Looking at the Data & Analysis standards, how are/might you implement them? What questions do you have about them?
It's important to use stands as the means to teach digital fluency skills. integration is an easy way to do this!
because ours are simpler in Kinder I do require some sort of template, can b on graph template Ss practice planning
I think using gForms & gSheets are great ways to collect & analyze data.
Q4: Looking at the Data & Analysis standards, how are/might you implement them? What questions do you have about them?
A4: I'm obsessed w/ lessons! We do all kinds of activities! Ss coded Dash to blink in binary pattern today, in fact!
A4: I plan to meet some of these with spreadsheets which ties well into CCSS math & NGSS as well.
A4 Just started playing around with and it's amazing for visualization!
A4 Start with a simple interest inventory graph to warm kids up to the idea, then use numbers or sheets to transfer data, monitor
PreK-5 does binary! We've done everything from bracelets, to pixel art, Dash coding, read Robot Story!
A4 Students always say at end of year reflection that Binary Number unit was their favorite.
Do you think that your students understand that all files stored in the computer are "data"?
I'm going to have to check them out, thanks https://t.co/WpqFOWzBwe
A4 Just started playing around with and it's amazing for visualization!
Question 5 is coming up about the final concept area. Watch for it.
Q5: The final concept area is Impacts of Computing. What ideas, resources, lessons, and questions do you have about these standards?
100% there is a really cute about that explains the data storage! They added a lot of CS resources!
They will now https://t.co/g1ZK3L5UtC
Do you think that your students understand that all files stored in the computer are "data"?
Really need a subscription to this.
No. Been using GSuite for such long time, aren't talking a lot about files stored in computer. Mostly cloud
They will understand and like it!!!
But these are really still stored on a device somewhere are are data.
A5: this is a tough Standard.. I think it's really the concept that younger Ss aren't developmental able to understand yet
What if anything are you doing to teach students about inclusion, how computing affects them & others, etc.? https://t.co/Umxqlpwlhd
Q5: The final concept area is Impacts of Computing. What ideas, resources, lessons, and questions do you have about these standards?
A5: For 1B-I-1-17 I love setting up computing buddies with other classes (around the world) and sharing projects and feedback.
A5 Have used survey with students about personal media/technology use to start conversations
It can be tough. There's only ONE standard at K-2 and it's about how technology has changed our lives.
That one always gets students thinking about their tech use. Don't know if it changes that.
We will be doing this soon w/ a school! Also starting "code clubs" and doing outreach to title1 schools w/ fewer resources.
Informally, whenever students "mess around" with display settings, talk about purpose of settings, aren't just for fun
Be watching for the final question of the night.
Q6: How are you going to integrate the CSTA (or other) CS standards into your practice? Anything new you will add?
Yes, some of the standards may be one "formal" lesson and on-going reinforcement during the year as needed, IMO.
You mean if it changes their tech use at all?
A5 impacts of computing would be a great opportunity to integrate it into a project on communication for k-2
Yes, they are always amazed at the amount of time they spend on devices but I don't think there's a change
A6: integrating impact of computing was a personal practice goal I set this year. Will do what I already mentioned!
A6 First step for me is sharing w/ other ITS in district
Link? https://t.co/72hTnxBkWe
A5 impacts of computing would be a great opportunity to integrate it into a project on communication for k-2
A6: I need to work more on giving my students access to learning experiences around Impacts of Computing. So important!
I agree, I need to do more with the Impacts area.
Agree. I think if we as teachers can influence any type of change from consumers to producers, that's a win
sorry the link is in my head not as awesome as you, lol!
