Awesome!!! This one is more pedagogical, so I hope they can really apply the concepts to their future classes. Let me know if you want me to GHO in or visit sometime #MakeItReal
Well, I'm Denis, Director of Student Achievement in @WeehawkenTSD , Author of Instant Relevance and Hacking Mathematics, and happy to be back living where I grew up...NJ! #MakeItReal
Hey @MathDenisNJ Trust be told, I didn't review the q's. but here I am. I teach Math 2 and Open Up Math 8 in NC. Missed you all. Crazy wonderful year. #MakeItReal
A1: For me, it's music. I play sax and sing and haven't had the time to get involved with it again. Summer gives me the chance to feel that musical endorphin release! #MakeItReal
A1: I teach tennis and I like to watch tennis related PD videos on YouTube. But when school starts, that gets put aside. I wish I had more time to train and play like I used to #MakeItReal
A1: Umm... everything?🤦🏾♀️ There's never a good enough excuse to put your passions on hold but I know I did it this year. I love paper crafting (Circut machine kind of stuff), baking, and reading! #makeitreal
A1 part 2...althought with kid #1 off to college, I've had more time to get back to some things that had been on the back burner...like Twitter chats for one! #MakeItReal
A1: Our kids are very musical - piano, violin, drums, trumpet - I would love to do the same, but we have too many irons in the fire. Besides music, I would love to do more with computer science, game design, coding. Very jealous of my students. #MakeItReal
A1: Definitely writing! I love to write! I was much better with my #blog during #IMMOOC and then I went down the rabbit hole of doing other things. This is my passion and am back at it this summer! #makeitreal#Nan3EDU
I would LOVE to read the writing you are all talking about wanting to do. Get it out there, get it to me, and let's share it together! (I've got a few things I want on paper too!!! _ #MakeItReal
A2 Writing has always been a way for me to express myself. I feel that writing can be so personal and make great connections with ppl that can led to great changes in their lives. #MakeItReal
A2: It gives me a communoty of educators that I can really open up to...and the other gives me a chance to relax and enjoy someone else's very tasty work #makeitreal
A2: I have a passion for children's literature and have always wanted to write childrens book. Being a primary teacher allowed me to continually explore this genre and spend way too much money on books! #MakeItReal
A1: single mom, teenage mom.. I worked full time and went to college full time.. obviously I didn’t want to give up time with my little boy.. so mostly I gave up sleep 💀 pulled many all-nighters. #MakeItReal
I #EXHAUcan't explain it. I have to be ready for my kids. I must challenge them. I must be prepared. I must give feedback IMMEDIATELY. That's the right thing to do, right? #MakeItReal MY husband really wants a real though. Poor guy. #MakeItReal#exhausted
A2: In terms of baking -- I love feeding others. Seeing the joy on their face from something they consume is astounding. You know that what you made evoked an emotional reaction and that is so powerful! #makeitreal
A2: I see how beautiful our kids sound. I think, "I wish I could do that. I love music so much." But, pulling with equal force is fear of failure and wasting precious little time to attempt something that I might be bad at. Sad philosophy, yes, I am aware. -1, me. #makeitreal
Do it. just do it. don't worry about what happens later, just do it. Put your story down, imperfectly, then work it out. I bet they're great! #MakeItReal
A2: tennis provides a way for me to focus on something else, a way to make me think in different ways, and a way to teach people some growth mindset. There are many coaching skills that can carry over into the classroom. #MakeItReal
A2: For me it is my love of reading! I’m busy with other things during the school year so there’s no time for my books. I inherited this love from my mother who was a passionate reader!! #MakeItReal
Important priorities in life, and unexpected ones that become important, can shift the direction of your interests and your days. I hope your passion for sleep and your boy light up this summer! Maybe I'll meet him! #MakeItReal
A2: I enjoy the social aspect, taking time to reflect, listen to nature, laugh, and spend time with friends outside of work. It is also a great strategic game and there is some math involved! :-) . #makeitreal
I can't explain it. I have to be ready for my kids. I must challenge them. I must be prepared. I must give feedback IMMEDIATELY. That's the right thing to do, right? #MakeItReal MY husband really wants a real though. Poor guy. #MakeItReal#exhausted
A2 Jist love to get in my kayak and go to a calm pond and fish. Very relaxing and peaceful. Helps to calm my overthinking, overactive mind. #MakeItReal
Q3: How can you use this passion / hobby / interest or the elements of it that you love to connect with your students or create an engaging environment? #MakeItReal
I miss tennis too. I played since I was 8ish. Picked it up again a few years ago and did some local USTA tourneys, but again, lost it to time. #MakeItReal
A2: Sorry Joining Late! Lately it is anything that sparks my staff. When they come to me totally motivated and inspired I am totally beamed in. It reminds me of when I started teaching. #makeitreal
Q3: How can you use this passion / hobby / interest or the elements of it that you love to connect with your students or create an engaging environment? #MakeItReal
A3: Bringing music into the classroom is easy. Leveraging it for learning can be done with HS Eng with writing content raps, songs, analyzing themes of songs, rhyme & meter, etc. #MakeItReal
So who thinks it's time we formed a Twitter band/chorus? Once or twice a year we just get together for a chance to play music together! We HAVE to #MakeItReal
A4: Great faculty meeting activity. Let them build their own golf hole in the makerspace and have a competition among the staff! Golf in the hallway! #makeitreal
A3: Maybe I can con the Drama kids that are in Band to teach me how to play an instrument. They will get to share their passion for music and I will learn in a safer environment. I wouldn't dare ask my own children, they are not patient enough to teach me. :) #makeitreal
Q3: How can you use this passion / hobby / interest or the elements of it that you love to connect with your students or create an engaging environment? #MakeItReal
A3: I always played music (and allowed my students to play their music) in class. I used it for transitions, brain breaks, and celebrations too. #MakeItReal
A3 I was thinking about starting to write my book this year and elaborate on the whole process with my Ss. I want them to dream, believe and achieve, so I want to model that for them. #MakeItReal#getoutofmycomfortzone
Q3: How can you use this passion / hobby / interest or the elements of it that you love to connect with your students or create an engaging environment? #MakeItReal
A3: Last year I had a piano in the room and I taught the kids some basic songs. I sing with the Ss when we play music in the background. The kids sang a song for their families last year for family fun day that I taught them. #MakeItReal
A3: I love connecting with kids through children's lit discussions and sharing stories through read-alouds. I'm not in the classroom, but I visited all K-3 classrooms this year to read. #MakeItReal
Q3: How can you use this passion / hobby / interest or the elements of it that you love to connect with your students or create an engaging environment? #MakeItReal
Q3: How can you use this passion / hobby / interest or the elements of it that you love to connect with your students or create an engaging environment? #MakeItReal
A3: Really consider what it is about your passion that you love. The elements that draw you in CAN be recreated in our classroom, separate from our passion. Find the structure in there that can make a difference #MakeItReal
A3: I am always telling them about the things that I bake (when I do) and sharing pictures of them. I usually incorporate it into a math talk or share with my staff who will come into the room and comment. I wish I could feed my kiddos (against school policy). #makeitreal
A3: Regarding the book's subject, creativity is a must in all places especially education. It can emphasize to them how important creativity is #MakeItReal
A3: coach/teaching tennis lends itself to teaching a growth mindset and having students believe they can do anything. I love to share stories with my tennis Ss about my playing days - the ups and downs and help them find positives. #MakeItReal
Hahahahaha! That is the best writing gig ever! We did that for a while with podcasting. Then the kids have to read all the bad jokes and terrible stories. Ah, memories. #makeitreal
A3 Sewing is about the rules, until you know them, then you can break them, aka, take shortcuts. Golly. No wonder I love sewing. I used to do pensions and put small pieces together to make big ones. Couldn't sew then. #MakeItReal Now, learners...hmmmm
A3: Great faculty meeting activity. Let departments/teams make their own golf hole and have a friendly competition of miniature golf in the school! Each hole could incorporate a question/activity for fun to see how many shots you get on each hole. #MakeItReal
A3: What if we gave students some time out of their day to study or do their passion? Even just for 10-15 min. to set up that habit or routine...kind of like setting up that habit of exercising I keep talking about. #makeitreal
yes you can. Not the activity, but the love for it, the reason people do it, the outcomes of it, the descriptive tools sommeliers use and more!!! #MakeItreal
YES! This is so essential. Our stories have value and need to be told. I am looking at stepping out and sharing my own story via blog, soon. Been waiting too long. #makeitreal
A3: I was a high school reading teacher before IC. My love of books and reading was a critical part of my classroom. I tried to make the class environment rich with Literacy! #MakeItReal
A3: Teaching is a lot like baking to me. There are a lot of precise measurements that have to be taken but there are a million recipes to success and honestly its all a matter of taste and preference in the end. 💁🏾♀️🍪 #makeitreal
I love hearing perspectives about other hobbies and sports. Everything has their own unique characteristics and qualities. I never would have thought that about sewing. #makeitreal
Thank you all so much for coming to #MakeItreal tonight! I want these rekindled "summer resolutions" to come to fruition, so share with us when they do, and reach out when you need a little motivation!!!
Interesting. Now you've got me thinking. We can find a way. Not because we have to, but because beating the system is ALSO a passion of mine :) #MakeItreal
A2: you can’t pour from an empty cup - I give my everything to my students and my family, but in order to do that I have to refuel..
sleeping &running (my meditation) are the ways I refuel. #MakeItReal
A3: We are so fortunate to work with kids. Whether it is my daughters volleyball or my son’s shoe obsession, I always have things to talk about with my Ss. It is so wonderful to connect, it does not matter why or what. #makeitreal
Q3: How can you use this passion / hobby / interest or the elements of it that you love to connect with your students or create an engaging environment? #MakeItReal
A3 I get concerned about students who try to specialize too soon. WE need to model diversity in passions and not be ONE note. Kids' bodies and brains need more diversity. Too much of 1 sport or 1 music can narrow and hurt the body and brain. PURELY antidotal. #MakeItReal
Running IS meditation. That's what I used my running time for...a chance to clear my head, think new thoughts, and put other things aside for a while #MakeItreal
