#UrbanEd chat is a twitter chat for educators. Topics relevant to the subject of urban education will be discussed, but all educators are encouraged to join the conversation. The chats will be moderated by Ben and Neil, founders of Engaging Educators and elementary school teachers in Detroit, MI.
#UrbanEdChat A1 It looks like getting to know my Ss and their needs, ensuring all voices are heard, and their perspectives are respected in dialogue and approach to learning
A1 providing effective resources for all SS and Ts so that everyone no matter what level or background can grow collaborate communicate think critically and create and still be successful #urbanedchat
A1: educational resources and opportunities are distributed proportionate to need. Also like @Ready4rigor - âeliminate predictability of outcomes based on demographicsâ #UrbanEdChat
A1 Creating a learning space that is conducive to all learners, a curriculum that is flexible to engage & challenge all my kids, & an environment that is safe & encouraging. #urbanedchat
#UrbanEdChat A2 Levels 1 & 2 are really where my focus is. So many of my Ss are not able to access the curriculum based on a physical classroom enviro that is conducive to their learning needs, or a class culture that is not welcoming and inclusive in both words & practice
A2 The pyramid can help them understand their students had help differentiate an effectively plan for all ss success with the content. This is something along with everything that should be on educators walls #urbanedchat
#UrbanEdChat A2 if we are saying we want our Ss in class and learning but do not have clear stuctures in place to support Ss with behavior and learning needs are we truly inclusive? If we canât recognize or acknowledge pain and trauma is it even safe for them to âshow upâ w/us?
Thatâs great to hear. I used a form of that in my behavior intervention classroom. It helped the community to process the concerns and also gave a way to move on. #UrbanEdChat
A3: The physical environment should be reflective of students. Books with minorities should line the shelves. Visuals should reflect the diversity of students. #UrbanEdChat

#UrbanEdChat A3 it looks like standing desks, and space for students w/sensory needs, it looks like calm down areas, and assessable learning tools & manipulatives, it looks like student ownership as well

#UrbanEdChat A3 in the Breath For Change teacher Mindfulness and Yoga cert program now and weâve been tackling how to ensure our spaces are physically & emotionally assessable to our Ss. That they can show up we will be responsive and make/hold space for them â¤ď¸đ§đžââď¸đđž
A3 I agree with @MsJeffriesDesk we can not have just a classroom with rows of just brown desk anymore. None of us really learn like that. Think about how we a learn and engage at home. Are we in a small area propped up in a certain way just to learn? #urbanedchat
Q5: In subjects such as math and science providing an opportunity to learn seems far fetched for many math and science educators. What are some ways Ts can provide access for all Ss in math and science? #UrbanEdChat
A5 you are connecting and relating to your ss so that the lesson is engaging. You can not just take a lesson and teach it to everybody one way. Connection is key! #urbanedchat
A4 when it is safe for students to show up at school and learn/grow/make mistakes...when their whole humanity is honored they can learn. SEL practices takes time, but it also creates time. We can address Ss needs & provide supports in a way that is threaded #UrbanEdChat
A3 (Band) I create pathways for Ss to move about w/ ease; resources available; varied forms of content posted; variety of successful women/men of different ethnicities represented; reading space w/language choices & content/people; incl. ASL focus too this year. #urbanedchat
A4 cont... and weaved throughout our buildings and classrooms. This is how disportionanality is tackled and attendance increases, and parents and communities get on board. SEL is caring for the whole child. Period. #UrbanEdChat
Q5: In subjects such as math and science providing an opportunity to learn seems far fetched for many math and science educators. What are some ways Ts can provide access for all Ss in math and science? #UrbanEdChat
Yes! Itâs a tragedy because this is often the time parents may also loosen the bonds as well. And our Ss are at a pivotal time in their lives without an anchor at home or school #UrbanEdChat
A5 #UrbanEdChat itâs all about making it relevant ; there is math and science all around us in ways that many students donât know or arenât aware . Using manipulatives helps !!!

At home we are sprawled out, legs crossed, standing over counters, allowed freedom of movement. To put something down and come back to it. We can work to add measures of S freedom of movement & inquiry back to our classrooms and learning communities #UrbanEdChat
Relevancy is just one part of it. I find that math Ts don't like to scaffold instruction for students. It get worse when they leave elementary. #UrbanEdChat
That attitude is a quick way SOC and girls get a bad taste in their mouth and lose their drive to excel in STEM fields. It can be down right hostile to Ss who require additional time or more than 1 way to understand a concept #UrbanEdChat
Q6 Allowing Ss to teach or reteach lesson can empower them to own their learning and explain concepts to peers in a more assessable way. đđž We can also use S aspirations as discussion prompts, research projects, book topics, etc #UrbanEdChat

A6: A6: Ts have to let Ss know (and mean it) that their voice is important, and keeping asking for their voice to be shared. See picture below. #urbanedchat
For #TeacherAppreciationWeek, I always have my Ss write appreciation letters to at least one T. This year, the requirement was to include a quote with their note. When I read a card from one of my Ss, I was surprised he quoted me. #WhyITeach
