#badgechat Archive

#BadgeChat was founded in December, 2014 by a group of educators who are passionate about credentialing learning and achieving. While there are thousands of us around the globe issuing badges to learners, there was not yet a regular twitter chat for those of us in the K-12 space to gather for learning and sharing about badging. After reaching out to leaders in the field (like the good folks at Mozilla and The Badge Alliance) for their thoughts, #BadgeChat was born.

I am interesting in using them in my classroom. Playing around a little at the end of the year right now and learning what I can. #badgechat
  • BadgrTeam May 14 @ 6:33 PM EDT
Time to talk badges at conferences! I’m Kim and for the next 30 min Badgr tweets are dedicated to #BadgeChat
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:33 PM EDT
I'm Noah in Denver. As organizer of #BadgeSummit, I'm especially keen on what folks share on today's topic so I can feed suggestions to our friends like @participate @credly @badgrteam @badgelist #badgechat
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:34 PM EDT
Yah! Always appreciate how public you are as you dabble in your own learning...hope you'll be blogging about the adventure! #badgechat

Any new BadgeChatters and Lurkers are welcome to join the conversation any time...first question coming up #badgechat
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:35 PM EDT
Q1: What kinds of Digital Badges have you seen offered at conferences? #badgechat
  • Dale_Chu May 14 @ 6:36 PM EDT
HAPPENING NOW: @SenorG moderating a chat on badging at conferences. Follow along at #BadgeChat!
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:36 PM EDT
A1: I've been to conferences like @actfl where attendance badges are offered. Have also seen scavenger hunt games like what @badgrteam offered at InstructurCon last year #badgechat
  • teresagross625 May 14 @ 6:37 PM EDT
A1: I don't recall being at a conference where badges were offered. I love the concept! #badgechat
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:37 PM EDT
Several vendors offered Digital Badges at the #BadgeSummit the last 2 years but feedback I heard was that few attendees tried to claim them... #badgechat
  • markjotter May 14 @ 6:37 PM EDT
    Mark from @participate - joining a little late #badgechat
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:38 PM EDT
You're just in time Mark! #badgechat

Anything specific about the concept that piques your interest? #badgechat
    In reply to @teresagross625
  • teresagross625 May 14 @ 6:38 PM EDT
How do you get the badges? Are the digital? Do you accumulate them? #badgechat
    In reply to @SenorG, @actfl, @BadgrTeam
  • BadgrTeam May 14 @ 6:38 PM EDT
A1: Badges for keynotes, vendor meet-ups, scavenger hunts, and session types. Q1: What kinds of Digital Badges have you seen offered at conferences? #BadgeChat
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:39 PM EDT
Interesting! What is the keynote example? #badgechat
    In reply to @BadgrTeam
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:39 PM EDT
Second question coming up already... #badgechat
  • RyanPeetz May 14 @ 6:39 PM EDT
A1. I have seen badges that were designed to show attendance at certain sessions, social media posts about the conference, and for scavenger hunt type activities. #badgechat
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:40 PM EDT
Oh cool! What were the social media badges for? #badgechat
    In reply to @RyanPeetz
  • teresagross625 May 14 @ 6:40 PM EDT
It reminds me of when you get a certificate for going to a conference. It's like a memory of your learning. I like the concept of badges for the same thing! #badgechat
    In reply to @SenorG
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:40 PM EDT
Q2: If we dream big about conferences badges that serve as CREDENTIALS representing learning, how might that look? #badgechat
  • BadgrTeam May 14 @ 6:40 PM EDT
We showed a QR code on the big screen after a keynote. Conference attendees could scan the QR code to claim their digital badge. #BadgeChat
    In reply to @SenorG
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:40 PM EDT
Nice!!! Think that hints at second question as well:) #badgechat
    In reply to @teresagross625
  • teresagross625 May 14 @ 6:41 PM EDT
A2: I would love to have a "digital memory book" of professional learning. #badgechat
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:42 PM EDT
A2: I dream big about Badges earned at conferences being "cashed in" for CEUs with districts and depts of ed, as well as the learning they credential being valued by supervisors... #badgechat
  • BadgrTeam May 14 @ 6:42 PM EDT
Yes! Badges are digital and collecting them is fun. See https://t.co/atiMHF5liG for a primer. You can create a free account at https://t.co/kaUEFDGdwt #BadgeChat

Q1: @elemenous has used @AlludoPlay badges at several events and I thought those were pretty cool #badgechat
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:42 PM EDT
oooo, that's exciting! Are you picturing something like a running record e-portfolio for adult learners?!?! #badgechat
    In reply to @teresagross625
  • teresagross625 May 14 @ 6:43 PM EDT
    Thank you! #badgechat
    In reply to @BadgrTeam, @SenorG, @actfl
  • teresagross625 May 14 @ 6:43 PM EDT
If I knew what that was.... 😂....... yes? #badgechat
    In reply to @SenorG
  • RyanPeetz May 14 @ 6:44 PM EDT
A2. Once the evidence of learning is displayed for others to see, a badge can be provided to organize the learning and the evidence. #badgechat
  • markjotter May 14 @ 6:44 PM EDT
Q2: I think most folks agree that conferences are a solid form of professional learning - would love to capture, in a badge, the evidence of teacher learning and how that learning impacted their teaching and their students learning #badgechat
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:44 PM EDT
That's cool. Maybe Julia or Damon from Alludo can fill us in with an example of what you're describing... #badgechat
    In reply to @markjotter, @elemenous, @AlludoPlay
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:45 PM EDT
So not just to recognize learning with a credential but to "organize" it as well? Are you thinking this starts to help Educators with our own PD Pathways? #badgechat
    In reply to @RyanPeetz
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:45 PM EDT
What this guy just said: #badgechat
    • markjotter May 14 @ 6:44 PM EDT

Joining late. Kris, Elem Prin from PA. We’ve started using badges for pd in our building. #badgechat
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:47 PM EDT
A2: Just heard about a company's ability to "time-box" and "geo-box" Badge earning. Would be cool to use that to replace having presenters/volunteers signing off on attendees seat time sheets at conferences for CEUs... #badgechat
  • kld12 May 14 @ 6:47 PM EDT
...and hopefully motivation to others. :) #badgechat
    • RyanPeetz May 14 @ 6:44 PM EDT
A2. Once the evidence of learning is displayed for others to see, a badge can be provided to organize the learning and the evidence. #badgechat

Awesome! Welcome Kristen! If you have any work you'd like to start sharing from your district, you've found a good audience for it here:) #badgechat

  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:48 PM EDT
    Third question coming up... #badgechat
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:48 PM EDT
Q3: For conference organizers thinking about offering Badges, what can go wrong? What risk factors are they wise to consider ahead of time? #badgechat
  • markjotter May 14 @ 6:49 PM EDT
Just had a "throw-back" moment to my geocaching days! #badgechat
    In reply to @SenorG
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:50 PM EDT
A3: I think that one red flag going all out right away before validating that users will actually go for it...could be a ton of work that isn't worth it. Better to first get a sense of if you build it, will they come? #badgechat
  • teresagross625 May 14 @ 6:50 PM EDT
A3: Just guessing here, but if you have many participants? Distribution of them? #badgechat
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:50 PM EDT
That's not part of your present? I have a hollowed out geocaching tree 2 blocks away so I'll never fully give it up:) #badgechat
    In reply to @markjotter
  • RyanPeetz May 14 @ 6:51 PM EDT
A3. Can you really ever go wrong with badges? #badgechat
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:52 PM EDT
Great thought! If you create potential for a flood, be prepared to deal with the flood...adults want timely and meaningful feedback and if it takes a month to process all the requests, people will have a bad experience #badgechat
    In reply to @teresagross625
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:52 PM EDT
OK, rushing past those red flags to question 4... #badgechat
  • teresagross625 May 14 @ 6:52 PM EDT
Boy that's a good point! All that work.... #badgechat
    In reply to @SenorG
  • markjotter May 14 @ 6:52 PM EDT
A3: Platform fatigue/confusion can be a challenge - each conference usually has its own official app, plus the conference website - one more place to go to earn a badge can be an issue #badgechat
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:52 PM EDT
Q4: If you put on your futurist hat, what prediction would you make for conferences and badging in 2040? #badgechat
  • BadgrTeam May 14 @ 6:52 PM EDT
A3: Awarding the wrong badge to a group mudiesy the waters. Also, audience tone should align to the badge. Fun vs. Serious #badgechat Q3: For conference organizers thinking about offering Badges, what can go wrong? What risk factors are they wise to consider ahead of time?
  • markjotter May 14 @ 6:53 PM EDT
    Ooo - I love that idea!!! #badgechat
    In reply to @SenorG
  • teresagross625 May 14 @ 6:53 PM EDT
What???? How can it be the last question???? #badgechat
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:54 PM EDT
Right?!?! It'd be a bummer to set something cool up for conference that isn't sustainable. Like when you have a great idea for a student project and then sit on 175 3 page essays for a month...at least I've heard some teachers who clearly aren't me have done that:) #badgechat
    In reply to @teresagross625
  • teresagross625 May 14 @ 6:54 PM EDT
A4: I would hope it will be part of conferences? #badgechat
  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:55 PM EDT
Great point here!!! Be a thoughtful designer and seek the right fit! #badgechat

  • SenorG - Moderator May 14 @ 6:55 PM EDT
Any tips on how to go about ensuring that alignment? #badgechat
    In reply to @BadgrTeam
  • RyanPeetz May 14 @ 6:55 PM EDT
A4. Badges will be given and received in AR and VR spaces where the earners of the badges can “cash” them in for career advancement, financial incentives, and/or CEUs. #badgechat
  • markjotter May 14 @ 6:55 PM EDT

A4: Definitely a move to 100% digital. Name tags, sessions, meet-ups. Create a learning pathway out of session offerings, then complete it. #badgechat Q4: If you put on your futurist hat, what prediction would you make for conferences and badging in 2040?

Take a note and remember you heard it hear first: Learning Pathways out of session offerings. This will be a big deal and a disruption...and at the same time makes a lot of sense for all the right reasons #badgechat

A2. Love the idea of badges aligning with CEUs - to start a transition to a better way to PD. I also believe the should be some follow-up to see that the learning was applied #badgechat

Literally 15 minutes before #badgechat was reconnecting w former student who, after hearing about Badges, had the first question of: "So will there be a bunch of Mixed Reality applications of this in the workplace?"
