A4: if schools=habitats of students & staff, leaders must create predictability. Like animals, all must feel like they have purpose
The best leaders are always the best listeners. Hard to do in today's noisy world but, when devices are off, kids are great at it.
Someone who believes in them and has their back.
A4: It's more fun and more effective to work with leaders who are positive! Never underestimate the contagious power of positivity.
A5. That's why the best incorporates learner/audience voice, and can't be one size fits all!
Totally agree...defined many ways.
A4: Leadership Traits:
🤓Exemplars: who represent the "best" depending on
1️⃣ClassRM Culture
2️⃣School Climate
🆓Consultation
Agree! https://t.co/U7ae3P3X3C
I don't think ppl will step out of their comfort zone if the relationship w/ leader isn't there
A4: Ss and Staff must understand and believe their leader acts w/their well being in mind, not b/c they R concerned 4 their own.
A4 Trust! Been at my school for 12 years and have established that! 😉
A4: don't just listen, but really hear the ts, ss
, and ps.
Absolutely...strong dose of humility is necessary in finding that balance.
A4 A leader who authentically knows kids and gets excited about potential!
My favorite principal had those traits. When things got tough, she would ask, "What's best for students?" Focused us.
A5) When time is dedicated to pursuing personal interests, engagement is high! https://t.co/9LmAJ4ddKS
Q5: How can we use the philosophy to impact teachers, their learning and their PD?
A5: All T's have a strength. If Admin gives them the chance to learn about and share their knowledge, it can be contagious.
A5: Adds that layer of customization. No one wants to sit thru PD that is not relevant to them.
Would you purchase a piece of art if it didn't speak to you? make you feel? If what we do is not "felt", we remain on the wall ...
A4: A person that contains all leadership traits I wish I could have, is a person I will gladly follow.
We must all be learners continually seeking to learn more & improve at what we do. https://t.co/k2Rr9KpwWI
A4 Being a learner first and foremost. conversations listening asking the right questions are better than having all the answers
is a great tool for collecting data from students https://t.co/zlTGqOyzYV
It's great to survey students to get feedback on how we're doing. https://t.co/YVIDDuQhtA
A3: our students' works fills the hallways, surveys are sent for students to have a voice (i.e. in new mottos, sayings, etc)
A4: honesty, integrity, candidness, supportive, motivating, inspiring, focused, concerned for people's well-being, open, learning.
it is so important for all educators to start from a point of empathy!
correct but happy allows u to grow more than unhappy! Focus on Ss learning
I struggle with this when put my standards on lesson plans b/c so many of my kids need more b4 than can do. i adjust
A5: We use for staff. They create their own personalized learning plan for portions of PD days https://t.co/PDxGWXgUqU
Q5: How can we use the philosophy to impact teachers, their learning and their PD?
Guess I should introduce myself (was too excited to join in!) Artemis from Toronto VP in a K-8 inner city school :)
A4 Listening and forming relationships! Helps with trust!
A5 is great! But Ss can be co-creators/partners in their own learning all the time. https://t.co/32yK9mrnGm
Q5: How can we use the philosophy to impact teachers, their learning and their PD?
A5: Educators, including admin, should be able to get revert points for documenting active participation in Twitter chats. Boom!
these are the traits we want in a manager, let's stop conflating that with leader
that is awesome Beth! More schools need to consider this model!
It is time to categorize PD- some for the whole staff, some for small groups w/ choice & some teacher directed & personalized!
A5 I wonder if it needs to be seen in action so the vision is caught & motivation to lose 'box ticking' is high
A5: Incorporate style sessions into PD. Promote/engage-in Twitter chats. Create an atmosphere of constant learning - model
Relationship of trust is, not a good relationship. +
A5: Empower Ts w/Edcamps and leading Instructional Rounds. Invite them to present - many won't step out on own - Inspire Ts to lead
A4: Compassion, trustworthy, fair, flexible, fun, walks the walk-tough job!
That is cool! Our principal will not allow us to call her boss!
A5: I had to look up Genius Hour. I like the concept. Looking forward to seeing responses. Learned something new today!!
A5 we must believe ALL teachers can and should be awesome teachers as well
Great chat today, trying to keep up with reciprocating these follows! TY
A3: No more desks in rows/columns! The Archaic rooms need to go. Ss need choice & exciting learning environments
A5: promoting exploration of passions and interests during will bring more meaning and motivation for Ts.
A4. I value transparency, consistency and someone who is willing to take risks. My Ss value someone who will listen
It's not easy, right Maureen? That's why a simple mantra like, "Is this decision what's best for kids?" can guide us.
A5: Using the Edcamp structure, it allow us to make PD more meaningful and gives a sense of ownership?
listen to Obama's speech about teaching & schools, you have to watch. Also national teacher of year speaks https://t.co/GzRfPKfROQ
Good relationships can create culture of fearing to anger. trust in being okay is key.
It's what makes a person a leader, and it's what makes others want to follow. https://t.co/UcUtoz7zkl
A4: A person that contains all leadership traits I wish I could have, is a person I will gladly follow.
And Ss begin to get nervous for summer--it isn't a positive change for every Ss
I want to work there https://t.co/wDv67cZDF4
My principal is knowledgable, kind, and calm and always puts kids first
A5 At its ❤, genius hour is self directed. Choice can empower, energize learners of any age.
A5- is the best thing that happened to my classes , imagine what that idea could do to our PD and PLNs!
Ss need Ts who support every S no matter how unloving some Ss may be. Behaviors = tough lives, not bad kids https://t.co/lSfHJcAF9g
A5: We should do interest or strength inventories and then tailor our learning goals to build on those interests and strengths
A5 - allows Ts to tinker + create - make sure they play w/ during this time, it's transformational!
Want some ideas for creating a strong culture & positive climate in your school for Ts and Ss and parents? Follow
A5: I think too often we speak idealistically about open-ended PD, when a lot of schools truly need a distinct PD direction/focus.
A5 Ts néed their own to explore and learn from each other
a5 Giving Ts and Ss voice and choice in the way they learn is not only good modeling but necessary for promoting growth
A3: we must engage students in authentic conversations that say "I see you & I want to better know what makes you YOU."
A3: My director's mantra is "It's not about what you teach, it's about what they learn." S centered requires intentional design
A3 paying attention 2 social emotional health as much as academic success Advisory, club offerings, late start time
This is critical--so much time is wasted on senseless PD-often dehumanizing.
A5. School leaders who want to encourage the genius hour philosophy with their staff for PD need to transform teacher meeting time.
A5: Give them TIME for PD in their regular work day!
If we can use geniusPD for staff couldn't we begin doing the same for Ss?
A5: try to personalize PD (ex:EdCamp) & promote using social media like Twitter & chats to get PD anytime/anywhere
YES! Goingto be creating digital badges for our staff PD to individualize their professional growth from
So true! My best PD is often found just by visiting a peer's classroom - watching, learning, listening, growing.
A5 I try to treat my portfolio obs model as my genius hour...I get to pick an area of ed inquiry and play w/ it all year.
A4: Ts didn't choose career bc they want to teach standards. G Hour is about passion & autonomy. Reconnect to possible!
OH SHOOT... West Coast in the HOUSE! Welcome https://t.co/mkXIPmWPW7
A5 - allows Ts to tinker + create - make sure they play w/ during this time, it's transformational!
I understand! That's when we focus on the BIG ROCKS and integrate those standards to help connections. https://t.co/iSMNnE3LOT
I struggle with this when put my standards on lesson plans b/c so many of my kids need more b4 than can do. i adjust
if Ss are having a greater say in classroom activities, Ts should have a greater say in mtgs/ PD. Involve those who are impacted
No you're right it shouldn't be, but often is. We need it to become the norm. https://t.co/2WRvFVYtLs
A5: Professional learning should not be a mandate or directive, but rather a natural progression of life long learning and inquiry
Ohhhh! That is fantastic! Hats off to you for starting this club. They are lucky to have you in the community!
Absolutely. We should differentiate Professional Learning in the same way that we differentiate instruction for Ss
always wonder how energy, enthusiasm & delight of "genius hour" become more a part of every hour in school not an add on
A5 By spicing up the "have to"s with time and resources for the "want to"s. Help Ts reignite their passions. It will spread to Ss
A5b:Time is the most precious gift admin can give Ts. If some don't use the time wisely, talk to THEM and let the rest of us create
Just spent two days at learning of the design model! Incredible experience, and a lot of focus on the empathy!
Best evals ever from staff. Complete ownership and driven by need.
A5: Show proof that it works so they buy in. I've collected data all yr to do this. MY Ss proficiency went from 30% to 60% w/it
A5 Developing a love of learning & a culture of lifelong learning is critical 4 effective leadership. Feed the staff. Nourish them
- I love what you're doing! https://t.co/s3BxirDn3S
A5: We use for staff. They create their own personalized learning plan for portions of PD days https://t.co/PDxGWXgUqU
Q5: How can we use the philosophy to impact teachers, their learning and their PD?
This gives me hope. https://t.co/q1WFYgwBWX
A4: Blessed to have THE best superintendent a district could have tho. Intelligent, caring, REAL.
Happy does not equal growth. Happy can equal complacency. need more than 140

A5: Please share. Do not know what this is.
Question 5 - https://t.co/uwHgvk6aiv
Q5: How can we use the philosophy to impact teachers, their learning and their PD?
I think so and the length/degree of final year assessments also agitate Ss, changing focus
A5 We did that this year, Reuben. It was great. We need to do it more.
A4.As an experienced leader I always listen, empathise, lead by example, help, share and above all thank staff for effort. It works
Love this! https://t.co/SmjOu6pxyq
A5. Provide time for Ts to follow passions. Use time that is wasted at faculty meetings for passion projects. Empower/support Ts.
A5: Ts didn't choose career bc they want to teach standards. G Hour is about passion & autonomy. Reconnect to possible!
A5 Plan a couple fac mtgs where teachers investigate/push further in learning of their choice
A4 It's all abt the 3 R's relationships, relationships, relationships!
Great ideas come from many sources. I love a leader who listens to other's ideas.
A5 Have heard some schools gamified PD with badges & fun... Learning Google
A5 Like Genius hour, differentiate PD to permit Ts to take charge of learning what they value-when you value the Ts you value the Ss
A5: Everyone's journey is different. Never slam any staff member for making growth gains...even if they are small
A5: Personalizing PD for Ts is as essential as personalizing learning for Ss, Self-directed, relevant and so, effective.
A4. Honesty, integrity, innovation, presence as professionalism, presence as participation, compassion, clarity.
Agree Lynne, I was at a meeting last night in MA about creating such a network.
The workshop model for all learners https://t.co/tgJFgSh2BV
It is time to categorize PD- some for the whole staff, some for small groups w/ choice & some teacher directed & personalized!
A5 Agreed. Even more important, all teachers must believe that they can & should be awesome teachers.
A5: We need the gift of time!
A5: encourage and support Ts to follow their interests , connecting with others, and solving real-world classroom issues.
You wouldn't like me.
iFeel threatened by ambitious women willing to imprison😠 to get ahead in careers.
Q5 gets to the heart of "everyone can lead". Management steps back while leaders envision and co-create their learning community
The key is that any high quality and valued PD is targeted and organic to meet the need vs, 1-size-fits-all.
A5: Genius hour influence...classroom becomes like a 'laboratory' where we study/research the learning experiences of our Ss daily.
A5 Leading with the question, "What problem do you want to solve?" leads learners to answer, "Who owns the learning?"
Give teachers permission to take a break from the "pacing calendars." A5
A2 Start with »sapere aude« and continue with »sapere educare«
A5- some of my Ss doing yesterday - learning & creating outside the classroom! Imagine that! https://t.co/Lf0CVv9qlD
A5 Professional Learning Opportunities should be personal, meaningful & designed to strengthen Ts knowledge/passion/expertise:GHour
Time to go to soccer. I'll catch up on the convo's later. Thanks
A5. Create safe space & time for Ts to own learning. School leaders should do same! Can't model if we aren't in process of doing.
I think it's about providing choice & encouraging a culture of following own passions & own learning trajectories.
A5.2 School leaders can offer/invite many paths to reach a common goal.
Agree that will come as we raise the profession up, and prompt "autonomy, mastery, and purpose" for all T's
I work at an incredible school in an incredible district
The principal is the school leader of the school's leaders.
A5. Having a time set aside to work on whatever I want in regards to my practice or passion, I'd be on cloud 9
A5: PD should improve our classroom practices not something we sit & get. When Ts are actively involved, they are impacted & grow.
Which is a win for all since that culture & energy would likely spill over to students & community https://t.co/KxZxUIgwcI
A5: Professional learning should not be a mandate or directive, but rather a natural progression of life long learning and inquiry
I attended my first Edcamp event last month, great event!
YES! YES! YES! https://t.co/8Ova4G7dNI
A5: Incorporate style sessions into PD. Promote/engage-in Twitter chats. Create an atmosphere of constant learning - model
Some Ts get that while others don't. They are so tired that they aren't looking outward
Personalized in Ts choice or Personalized in content for them? I think content for them some choice when appropriate
A5: We use The Hero's Journey to drive all our PD. What is your Call to Adventure? Thx to ! https://t.co/zjybZDyNbp
A5 Nicole, this is where creativity helps--there's lots of ways to make time in schools, but we have to think together.
School leaders must be flexible & attuned: asks himself, "what does the building need me to be right now."
A5. Think of the awesome PBL that could come out of teacher
A5 Set aside structured time for teachers to pursue development needs and encourage exploration of new interests
I would like to learn more about this concept….
A5-expose Ts to a variety of paths & then get out of their way & support their journey https://t.co/ZbzTLZel5X
Q5: How can we use the philosophy to impact teachers, their learning and their PD?
We've been doing it, too. And the feedback has been extremely positive!
A5: Have examples and video of what could be so the idea isn't as abstract. Have Ss talk to Ts about what they want.
A5 Allow Ts to follow & develop their passion, mine is science, was a science phobic, had a leader who nurtured my steps N changing
A5: wait you want us to teach teachers like we teach Ss? Oh because it's best practice! Be purposeful and relevant in ur PD
Love this quote! Reminds us all education is important and we mustn't forget it serves multiple purposes https://t.co/cIgjMl52cO
Choose Your Own Adventure PD!
via https://t.co/0OyjBGFoyl
That's why we do Choose Your Own Adventure PD Ts seem to like it. https://t.co/l8yVo7EcKU
A3: Give staff ownership of their PD. They feel empowered and it starts a conversation about empowering kids.
The Mikes with another great sidebar convo. Thanks, Mikes. Appreciating your ideas this AM
if U experience open communication, value, trust U won't go back 2 "my way" ldrs
A5 Yes, I love that focus, Dennis--truly empowers Ss and sets them up well for their lives.
A5: Let'em see it in action. Allowing Ts to explore&learn on their own will inspire them to change the way they foster S learning
There's lots of good game on here, but no clear plan or strategy. What's really going to change, leaders? It's up to YOU.
And small shifts in language from professional development to developing professionally promotes continual growth.
A5) underscores importance of asking ?s that don't have easy answers & then explore/solve; Ts benefit same focus/action
promoting a instead of some mandate is the way to go...share the vision & let Ts be the experts they are.
A5: Somewhat related. Our WW2 research project this year allowed students to pick topics. The passion was the best I've ever seen.
Go from good to awesome! https://t.co/8H91R7uJhH
A5: We should do interest or strength inventories and then tailor our learning goals to build on those interests and strengths
A5- sometimes I visit a museum or read a great book, and wonder why that didn't count as PD but a mtg on spreadsheets did
Awesome! Gets ownership of the problem and the authority to help design the solution!
Leaders can make/break a school culture. Tyranny not=to leadership. Be open, kind, and always approach to help not punish/shame.
Every time we facilitate PD we have another opportunity to model best practice w/ teachers.
which is part of the problem with teacher evals in most places. The same rule applies to adults.
A5: When we consider how we study that which we are passionate about, we shud B studying our Ss & how they learn, thrive in Clss.
A5 Curiosity, agency & a love of learning seem like non-negotiables in the teaching profession to me.
ok, now that we've dispensed with the turtledoves, let's
12 day's of xmas look at aten.
It's a lapdance. https://t.co/VlhYWSu29x
A5) Allowing teachers to discover and share their passions is rarely a bad thing. Just think of the learning that could take place
is trending on my page right now... That is so cool!
ok, now that we've dispensed with the turtledoves, let's
12 day's of xmas look at aten.
It's a lapdance. https://t.co/1AYKhVaAUP
Haha. Well, ambitious doesn't necessarily equate opportunistic.
Q5: Ooh I know, it's called the Smackdown! https://t.co/5woBPYgWe4
Q5: How can we use the philosophy to impact teachers, their learning and their PD?
A5: Model what we want in our classrooms. PD will offer voice & motivate Ts to take charge of their learning
LAST QUESTION FOR COMING UP!
so true..and a must share!
PD should be driven by collective voices... some driven by the individual needs & some driven by school-wide needs w/ choice!
A5 allow teachers to pull away from the pacing curriculum and let learning come alive
It must be disappointing at times to compare + for the structure to not match what you believe priorities ought to be.
I agree but try to get a consistently unhappy person to grow. Envio allows it
I see you also couldn’t choose just one - great list!
A5: allows kids to explore their curious nature and find out why things work (or don't work). https://t.co/SaKarUXfRt
my 3rd grade readers planning a parent wkshop @ what Ss can do in summer for reading... https://t.co/L6aGznbhCw
And Ss begin to get nervous for summer--it isn't a positive change for every Ss
Thanks Pam, for putting it that way. That is what I was going for!
A4 asked tchers what do you want to learn and they pursued different paths together or individually to pursue that
Just want to say TY for all the follows/networking connections. The more diverse in talents, the better the team!!
Knowing your Ts, seeing their needs and directing them to resources, makes Ts feel validated
A5 PD through Genius hour allows teachers to grow and follow their own passion. Powerful tool to reignite Ts own love of learning
So true! Every child, every person has a story. Every child every person has potential to be developed. https://t.co/zNhTcDLkIH
Ss need Ts who support every S no matter how unloving some Ss may be. Behaviors = tough lives, not bad kids https://t.co/lSfHJcAF9g
Or why doesn't count??? https://t.co/wGSN9JGGJI
A5- sometimes I visit a museum or read a great book, and wonder why that didn't count as PD but a mtg on spreadsheets did
I like the Professional Learning Menu idea--T's choose venue(s) they want, obligation to share/present learning in end.
Good morning! Hope you're doing well, Gwen.
Did a fellowship with last summer. we were actually in science labs learning, then brought that science to classroom
When we promote "grit" and "rigor" over patience and compassion while teaching, we have lost our way.
YES IT DOES!! is AWESOME PD!
I'd forgotten how fast this thing moves!
Q6: What is the greatest challenge facing school leaders today?
Thank you for amazing topic, discussions, and learning from all of you.
A6: Ensuring that students are not victims of their environment, but rather contributors and agents of change
B4 delivers the last Q: Happy Mother's Day out there to all the moms!
A5.2. I had conspiracy theories explored, Holocaust survivors personally met, comic book origins, etc. Really interesting stuff.
my admin let me borrow the book The Power of Our Words. It changed the way I talk to my students!
What would be on a year-long professional learning list for T's--then they choose their own path.
Well I can't argue with that. Good point.
Terrific idea! Providing Ps with a menu of "how to" have your Ss have a successful, engaging summer w/o summer slack
and will also teach them to self advocate! essential skills... https://t.co/0Ubj61omuM
A3 We have to stop equating everything to respect and compliance. We are working with kids. They need to know we have their back.
Q5:You have to know your staff, their strengths, & experiences then provide opportunities for sharing.
A5 From : create PD structure that allows Ts to design own PD: pinterest, twitter chats, google, etc--digital badges
Bravely go where no one has gone before https://t.co/ZshLRX7QFz
A3 - Student social media interns is awesome - let them from school accounts
look at you dropping words of wisdom so early in the AM! The DOE is lucky to have you on board my friend!
A5: What if we created ‘research teams’ at the B.O.Y. focused on exploring issues aligned to the mission of the school?
I wish my Ts had helped me develop my passions early on https://t.co/MsKglDLQ5f
A5) Allowing teachers to discover and share their passions is rarely a bad thing. Just think of the learning that could take place
Want to start year w/infographic project that brings our class facts/stories to light visually.
A5. Ensure PD is wanted and needed. Also, let Ts lead PD. Don't let expertise in buildings go untapped.
and so often this opportunity is lost.
A5: Be open to ideas that PD can & does occur through different avenues. For example, Skype and GHO with Ts beyond the school walls.
A6: The institutionalized culture of the status quo. It’s up to me to be an agent for change. https://t.co/5TSNXhaWjD
A6 Greatest challenges are forces outside education dictating school reform
Accountability as 4-letter word? What middle ground has been or can be effectively staked out? https://t.co/PFAtGT4oZ9
Get tired of idea I must "prove" i got "something" out of PD to someone else. Is PD to help me, or to make someone else happy?
A5 choice is impt for Ts just like w/Ss LOVE how did her own w/Ts -great way to feel confident to try w/Ss!
Excellent point https://t.co/jRjjRccCsB
A5- sometimes I visit a museum or read a great book, and wonder why that didn't count as PD but a mtg on spreadsheets did
A5: Allow time for creative juices to flow through hands on differentiated activities. Always celebrate successes!
What?!? That went by fast! And I participated the whole time using my phone. 😮 📞 https://t.co/ap6YrzafJW
LAST QUESTION FOR COMING UP!
Question 6 and it's a tough one!
https://t.co/nWq9i3LU8b
Q6: What is the greatest challenge facing school leaders today?
A6: Getting buy in from everyone.
Does anyone have a good suggestion on a company to develop a school app?
Just getting up SC & SL are like Coca-Cola...can't have one without other. https://t.co/tB3DLSaIIO
Q1: How are school culture and school leadership connected?
A5 Just like we value giving S's voice and choice with their learning, we should do the same with Teachers and their PD
District had new initiative. Principal gave us released time to plan. Initiative happened. Boom!
I love the sound of this! How did you introduce it to the staff?
Love to hear more about this--wanting to develop greater cultural proficiency, agency in all projects/learning next year.
A6) Having everyone to be all in and to stay focus on that vision. After you have a shared vision.
A6 I would think being an admin is a constant balancing act since everyone want you on "their side"; Ss, parents, Ts
having said that, the BEST I've experienced in a long time was done by . Dude nails it!
A6. Effectively reaching district & state requirements, while being visible in an edu climate nationally that can be challenging
ohhhh, you have me thinking all sorta cool things with this one !
A6. The greatest challenge facing school leaders is adapting to how & where students learn using technology. Do we need buildings?
A5 is T and S growth- open, curious walking in and reflection walking out
You are so right--everyone happy, working, collaborating, engaged--replicate for every hour!
A6 Remaining/becoming committed to a true school culture of learning & curiosity over a culture of earning, testing & compliance.
My bed won't let me leave
A6: Maintaining balance and focus on what's best for kids while juggling management of mandates that aren't always kid-focused
"my way" ldrs in coaching, principaling, teaching, politicking -compliance-focus
A6: The testing/accountability driver is getting in the way of innovation.
What if Ts and S could have a genius hour to model their interest outside of school THAT would b a relationship builder
A6 Bureaucracy and other peoples agendas that divert from the mission and vision of the organization
not really, sometimes testiness can surface real issues. Only matters where power over indvs is involved
A6. Greatest challenge facing school leaders 2day is state & federal initiatives requiring more time 2 complete paperwork n offices
A6: Personally, lack of time is my biggest challenge as an educational leader
A6 Past conceptions of how school should be, present fear of change & future evidence of the value of innovation
A6 For me has to be the reform agenda in NYS although with new regents on board seeming some change
So true, you have to have shared vision to accomplish anything!
A6 - All the 'tasks' we must do that have ZERO positive impact on kids, teachers, community and are NOT relevant in 2016.
A5: is about allowing time for self-driven learning. Shouldn't that be the focus for kids and adults?!
A6: Not change that comes w/computers, it's state changes come w/out support. Admin. do their best, but w/out funds, it's tough
leadership models for schools are outdated--there seems to be lots of tension w/regard to roles and how they work.
I dont think it has to Andrew! How mandates & policies play out in our schools is up to us!
how much longer, Adam? I'm thinking of jumping back in. You're an inspiration!
I am looking forward to people's answers to Q5. We've tried different modes, some successful & some. It's a work in progress.
A6. Meeting the needs of ALL learners. A challenge that we have to strive for, and is incredibly hard to meet well.
Agreed and they zap my energy!
In central office, a huge challenge is know what REALLY is going on in schools and classrooms.
Agree, celebrate genuine and innovative thinking.
A6. To have the ability to reshape box" so that it needs the needs of both student and adult learners.
A6: trying to make sure all stakeholders have a voice & are being heard
A6: Biggest leadership challenge = balancing what you know needs & can be done with what we can actually do. We means all Eds!
Greatest challenge facing leaders? Balancing unreasonable mandates/policies while trying to do what is in the best interest of kids
Love that Andy. Well said.
A6 Being everything to everyone and knowing you will never be able to be https://t.co/OtKKicvz7O
Q6: What is the greatest challenge facing school leaders today?
A6: Culture so removed from natural world that we award diplomas to Ss who have no idea where their food/water comes from.
I'll keep you posted. I participated in last weekend and have been researching this week in spare time
A5: Genius hour influence...classroom becomes like a 'laboratory' where we study/research the learning experiences of our Ss daily.
Good morning & congrats Don!!
Tweeting the scandal family!!! 💚😘💟💚💗💗👉💕👉💗👉
OMG yes!!! https://t.co/cRcMaFChL4
A5: Personalizing PD for Ts is as essential as personalizing learning for Ss, Self-directed, relevant and so, effective.
A6 other colleagues and admins going with status quo drives me nuts
A6: Adapting to change and inability of some Ts to hand over a greater degree of learning to their students.
GHOST🎥Of Girlfriends Past🎥
I don't want to 'hack' into the discussion, but this may be the most awesome group of people ever engaged in !
A6 There's been so much work w/T's, but seems to be little consistent work w/Leaders--time for that.
A6 The greatest challenge school leaders or any leader has is apathy and disconnect; not seeing the value in what you are doing
A6 The timeless one: navigating between what's best for all learners & what's best for each learner
I'm a fan of a newer term: "Build In." We are always more invested when we make something, rather than buy it!
Good morning! Maryann from PA. Q6 Challenge is to make the changes needed to keep schools modern & relevant to learners.
A6/ for me, balancing demands of board w/ needs of school -feel like they don't always align. Students 1st! https://t.co/AA5sMskMTU
Q6: What is the greatest challenge facing school leaders today?
Yes, sometimes we forget to share or reflect and this time is crucial!
I just opened up my Twitter and is on a roll already!! Loving the conversation https://t.co/qrhdbBe08n
A1: "The culture of any organization is shaped by the worst behavior the leader is willing to tolerate." - . EXACTLY!
A6 so hard to be a manager and a leader --- I could spend all day every day dealing with small issues - but it can b done!
relationships are about achieving Ss learning not warm and fuzzy
A6 I think restructuring roles, supports, resources would result in more dollars for good leadership/schools.
- This is amazing!!! Great share!!! so many ways to use this to set a course or to reflect on our work!
A6: knowing that challenges exist, the world has changed, students' learning needs have changed & adapting to them in a 21st way
. is doing this at her school. So much greatness is coming from this experience https://t.co/unU6QvADfF
A5: What if we created ‘research teams’ at the B.O.Y. focused on exploring issues aligned to the mission of the school?
is trending because of all the amazing, dedicated & passionate edus contributing! That is SO AWESOME!
A6: Yes! As important that staff don't give in to the overwhelming belief that environment dictates hope. https://t.co/UUsXp5EEAx
A6: Ensuring that students are not victims of their environment, but rather contributors and agents of change
A6 higher decision made by ppl who know nothing about the art of education
A6 Dealing with initiatives that are not S focused and take away the time that could be spent engaging learners
Though I know some schools are simply underfunded.
A6. Another challenge 4 school leaders is the ever changing landscape of instruction, assessment, tech tools. Difficult 2 catch up
A6: It's never easy to make everyone happy, but everyone needs to understand the reasoning.
I had that experience in my school with awesome leader leader Margaret MacLean from here in VT https://t.co/YJP4RvYdjY
A4 asked tchers what do you want to learn and they pursued different paths together or individually to pursue that
A6 Given leaders have joy, compassion, model shared learning + vision + have engaged presence, greatest challenge is time for all
Some schools (don't know how they figured it out budget-wise), now have SAMs (school administrative managers). :)
needs 'reason' and 'change champion' as well to really guarantee success
YES!! The students are our "customers" we should always be doing what is best for them! https://t.co/kil84HR232
Greatest challenge facing leaders? Balancing unreasonable mandates/policies while trying to do what is in the best interest of kids
A6: Creating schools where ALL As, Ts, & Ss value & implement choice & voice effectively to improve student learning.
Honesty, authenticity, and focus on kids helps reframe other people's "side". We do not work in a binary business.
A6: Being the bridge between what should happen, & what does-Helping Ts with the change while being a part of it, bridging the gap
Agreed! So many challenges for leaders today Standardized test scores, grades, media, budgets... https://t.co/sl2XnkBkQT
Question 6 and it's a tough one!
https://t.co/nWq9i3LU8b
Q6: What is the greatest challenge facing school leaders today?
A6 in australia it's the enormous amount of admin they have to do.
Personalization vs. Differentiation vs. Individualization...something to think about when personalizing PD. https://t.co/vjpjurlSH9
A6: making everyone happy, getting everything done, and still giving the best future for everyone that comes through the doors
A6: Finding ways to balance all that has to be done with what needs to be done to support student learning.
how can we encourage teachers to talk with one another to share ideas?
A6 mandates and compliance that doesn't make sense and not good for kids! (I'm in a principal rant!) 😆
Competency. Understanding what a leader is. So many truly don't kwow, and, they're running schools. https://t.co/uMq6c1jkSh
Question 6 and it's a tough one!

Q6: What is the greatest challenge facing school leaders today?
Have a great weekend friends! Off to a birthday party!
when your bestie and you are the first ones by the door
Pinterest Party=> Teachers show up at a location & Pin awesome activities --> submit Pins for grad credit https://t.co/dk905vGZCj
A struggle is dealing with the basics (math facts, literacy, etc.) while also innovating and pushing forward.
Ensuring that students are contributors and agents of change Theres No One True Path
https://t.co/KOR0GedcT0
CAST YOUR VOTE (Who will be our next president) VOTE & RETWEET
Agreed! It takes great courage for a leader to not let that system block our pursuit of true excellence https://t.co/i8awPXuhqb
I dont think it has to Andrew! How mandates & policies play out in our schools is up to us!
lots of variability w/regard to this, that's why it's important for T's and Leaders to connect outside of district.
I don't think it was on many Ts radar when I was in school either. https://t.co/8c5jez0yAO
I wish my Ts had helped me develop my passions early on https://t.co/MsKglDLQ5f
A5) Allowing teachers to discover and share their passions is rarely a bad thing. Just think of the learning that could take place
A6) The breakroom talk or neg. Ts who don't want to change, or want their idea (only theirs) to move forward as policy
A6: building and keeping synergy. The school year can be long...how do we keep everyone encouraged? Positive? Open-minded?
A6 Greatest challenge is lack of vision re what is possible.
Need edcamp & other PD to help all Ts&Admins re-energize &revisualize
A6: They can't be afraid to let their staff & Ss take risks with strategies & tools. We must prepare Ss for the jobs of tomorrow.
district staff spending year visiting homes 2 interview families abt sch as part of human-centered design
Great chat this morning about traits of great leaders & our focus group named the same traits!
Yeah, but it’s only trending in the U.S.
. these kids will definitely get their parents involved. It has created a buzz in school. https://t.co/X5fB7G0pXR
Terrific idea! Providing Ps with a menu of "how to" have your Ss have a successful, engaging summer w/o summer slack
A6 Be careful of answers that imply control and compliance! We won't transform education top/down.
You've just made everyone a little bit taller!!! Thanks.
A5: Admins are perfect- changing culture and lives is hard work- you gotta try hard everyday https://t.co/SvRHpDrVEp
A6: Greatest challenge for school leaders...finding balance when it comes to managing a school community & being a learning leader.
Yes, promoting a growth mindset for both teachers and students!
I think it takes a confident leader to say no. As a parent, I don't see many willing to take that risk
A6: Collectively binging people together while giving them autonomy.
A6: ‘Balance’...many things to keep moving. Leaders must develop & support leaders. Keep plates spinning! https://t.co/EWJNFImJ5z
And conservative approaches to what constitutes learning
thats awesome man! I am sure it is going to be great!
Well said. This is a must and has to be the districts mindset. Won't be easy, but it is our mission. https://t.co/iUc8CTYanx
A6. Meeting the needs of ALL learners. A challenge that we have to strive for, and is incredibly hard to meet well.
I really like this idea, Fred! Shifting the lang can help shift the mindsets, too, & create more ownership https://t.co/Y8sO9wPksG
I'm a fan of a newer term: "Build In." We are always more invested when we make something, rather than buy it!
A6 The greatest challenge facing schoolleaders today is to make learning possible. For students, teachers and the structure.
A6. Great as in awesome or great as in ginormous?
Kidding.
Overcoming fear and resisting comparison.
A6 The greatest challenge-dealing with the multiple challenges facing teachers, students, and families.
A6 The greatest challenge/opportunity is cultivating new school leaders who will do an even better job in an ever changing world.
A6: The balance of district/state demands, doing what's best for Ss & maintaining a culture of creativity/innovation amidst testing
A6 NYS APPR! Need I say more? 😆
A6 real leaders need admin/management to start seeing themselves as POTENTIAL leaders rather than THE leaders of school community
Mic drop quote of https://t.co/NKMN4utYJd
A6: Ensuring that students are not victims of their environment, but rather contributors and agents of change
the balance between empowering, envisioning, and ... paperwork!
When T's are empowered, they empower their Ss. When T's are disempowered, it trickles down.
Which is why all learners need their own personalized learning plans!
culture and environment should be at the heart of education
really makes a difference when we have agency over our learning - adults and young people
A2 have conversations, get 2 know Ts, Ss & P's. B present at PLCs and use coaching hat. Seek input! https://t.co/3eY4xo80vH
Q2: As school leaders, how can we go from simply being visible to being present and engaged?
And this is why I love coming here to learn... other like minded ppl who seek that excellence.
Agreed! Of course, I ALWAYS agree with Todd. It's worked out okay so far. :-) https://t.co/G5Q60F5mxi
I don't want to 'hack' into the discussion, but this may be the most awesome group of people ever engaged in !
A6: A govt. whose vision & mandates 4 ed. changes w each election. THINK: If you could CREATE a school, would it look like yours?
Best way to make sure students do not act like school year is over is to make sure teachers do not act like school year is over.
A6: Effective ways to measure Ss and Ts achievement, to build school unity and keep quality teachers in Ed.
Time for that am coffee. Absolutely love these chats. Can't get enough.
A6: No idea, but I'll guess: this whole SLO deal and the fact that graduation rates need to be high. Just high, anyway it can.
Right. But what a great overarching goal to strive for!
A6 Huge challenge is keeping our learners at center of every decision/choice/initiative/"Improvement" we make-Hard to stay on track
A6: Lack of equity. Not all Ss have the same learning experience which is sad. All Ss should have successful learning experiences
Love the term "human-centered" design, fits w/reading I've recently done about "living systems"
A6:Having to meet demands of those that really don't understand today's Ss & learning which takes away authenticity.
A6. Helping edus with 2nd Order Change.
It's like creating a new era with the technological world is giving chance to get & !
A6: A5: Admins are perfect- changing culture and lives is hard work- you gotta try hard everyday https://t.co/OkcDiQWO46
A6 we are drowning in paperwork! a necessary evil?
Sometimes we get caught up in words; so caught up we forget what they represent. Language shifting is helpful.
Resisting comparison is hard! Totally agree with you. When you are honest & acknowledge that weakness it is powerful.
A6 Making student agency, curiosity & a love of learning central school aims
Ummm...you know is in the chat, right?
iCried myself to😴last night.
iDon't have children😳
Constant😮interference w/personal life,

. Making sure that what is important always comes first instead of what is urgent. A6
You know what reminded me of today? Being a connected educator is all about relationships & together we are BETTER!
A6: Maintaining relevancy for Ss and staff! Need to get everyone involved in meaningful, authentic work!
Happy Mother's Day to all. Will enjoy reading thru 1st half. Best to all!

https://t.co/eJGku88B2d
A6 Would love to read a post called "Passion and Balance: Does that Exist?"
A6: The greatest challenge for leaders is supporting teacher innovation while also ensuring all students are learning.
A6: it's about r process not about results. Results are products of r process. Stay focused on a process that results n Ss learning
Before we end
On behalf of my co-moderators I wish a Happy Mother's Day to our PLN!
A6.Greatest challenge for leaders here is useless texts and workbooks that destroy learning and higher order thinking
I agree. I'm just now pursuing my writing passion 😱
Elizabeth Warren's Twitter rants prove how fearful the are about running against ! 🇺🇸
A6: Another issue is leaders put in positions they are not ready for. Many people are not prepared and ill-equipped to lead.
A6 Greatest battle is encouraging great teacherss who work hard and love kids but who are being beaten down by NC politics
The more I am in this work, the more I realize how similar adult/kids needs r. https://t.co/txMwDQXAdi
A5: PD should improve our classroom practices not something we sit & get. When Ts are actively involved, they are impacted & grow.
And taking the time to build a positive classroom culture with high, realistic expectations since day 1.
We must all have an Innovator's MIndset https://t.co/NHs2KO1pgg
A6: They can't be afraid to let their staff & Ss take risks with strategies & tools. We must prepare Ss for the jobs of tomorrow.
Wow- This was an amazing discussion. Thanks for rocking this am.
Bill Glasser's Control Theory still works
A6 biggest challenge is supporting Ts to embrace change, move out of their comfort zones and embrace 21st Cent learning
All of a single mind, yet like-minded- that's what makes education so exciting!
A6: overcoming teachers' knowing/doing gap...their practices do not always match what they know should be happening, best for kids
Great chat today. Thanks everyone. Happy Mothers Day!
A6 uncertainty about gov't policy and funding. We're about to have an election in aust where everything could change.
A6: Ts that aren't willing to go outside their box to benefit Ss. When they say, "I've always done it this way."
They are 1 of many in the school community.
An earlier question related to student or learner centered classrooms. If this is your goal get a hold of . 1/2
A6 Yes and moving towards "progression" rather than rating--seeing all Ss as growing in multiple ways, valuing that.
A5: If Ts are required to get a min # of hrs, allow them to get them in a manner that's meaningful to THEM. https://t.co/ObSWxZmjqn
yes finding the creativity within the constraints!
Build it into the School day or the PD schedule. Have specific times to share their ideas.
A6 Greatest battle is encouraging great teachers who work hard and love kids but who are being beaten down by NC politics
teacher retention is based on things like school culture, teacher autonomy and professional development... Not salary
It happens incrementally until the tipping point. We can do it.
A6 keeping a balance and maintaining in unrelenting focus on school improvement with all the distractions
Thank you for a wonderful chat. You inspire me more than you know!
There's construct of school yr calendar & formal observances, rhythms, constraints. Then there's limitless learning.
A6. Conveying the message that technology integration is not replacing what we're doing in schools. It is enhancing the learning.
A6: Admins are perfect- changing culture and lives is hard work- you gotta try hard everyday https://t.co/vkDDOJFjMw
There's role for mix of approaches, but how that is choreographed for optimal Ss learning/experience is critical.
You got it! https://t.co/YKpGMMRBS3
teacher retention is based on things like school culture, teacher autonomy and professional development... Not salary
thank you for having us Scott! is always so awesome! Cc:
this is a huge problem for me. It's really not too difficult to fix but easier to do nothing. https://t.co/TRxTl37dwU
A6: Lack of equity. Not all Ss have the same learning experience which is sad. All Ss should have successful learning experiences
This! Many external commands impact progress & mindset! Purposefully plan to counter negatives w/positives https://t.co/lWPaIHFYM3
A6: A govt. whose vision & mandates 4 ed. changes w each election. THINK: If you could CREATE a school, would it look like yours?
When my S was in elem school he used to set up meetings with his principal to discuss his ideas.
A6 Also envisaging a new way of doing things - being courageous enough to go against the grain & do something new
All these years being a connected educator and I finally made a ! Enjoyed the conversation - loved learning/growing w/ you all!
A6: institutional trust is at an all-time low. Re-establishing a sense of trust in the community.
Gotta say this was a great way to start the day! Thanks !!!

Q3: What structures can we put in place to create schools that are more student centered than adult centered?
and yet, they are often called THE school leaders - even in the standards and tests to become admin (management )
I loved this chat. It was awesome Thanks moderators.

thanks for being here Ross!
Great chat this morning! Thx!
That is how several schools in neighboring districts are in St. Louis.Too many to count.
I agree that teacher retention is an issue. Discipline issues and added pressures make it harder to keep teachers.
Getting rid of the standards & books - then teaching to the passions can do wonders as well :-)
If we want to build better culture in our schools, we have to be more intentional with HOW and WHY we do it.
thank you for joining us Fred!

thanks to our moderators for a great almost end to my day
We did w/Ss first so it was an easy transition.
A6: the greatest challenge is equipping ALL staff to maximize learning for EVERY student...closing the ever-persistent gaps.

It truly is. Different mindset & focus on what's best for Ss based on how they learn is what it's all about.
Exactly! Hard to portray that without tone of voice but glad you got it with my quotes!
I agree that it is a huge undertaking - but - we shouldn’t wait for a leader to model if that is lacking.
Looking forward to your June leadership presentation on Becoming your Brand.
