The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) is starting a new #prinleaderchat every Sunday at 9:00 pm EST. We will be starting this Sunday October 2. Our schedule is listed on this google spreadsheet https://goo.gl/SI9LVo.
Aloha! Welcome to the #PrinLeaderChat 'Ohana. We are celebrating National Principals Month. Tonight we discuss One Thing You Would Improve. Please introduce yourselves.
I'm Sarah, an aspiring principal in the midst of my administration and supervision Ed.S degree. I work in Northern Virginia and hope to lead a school in my current district! I hope it's okay for me to join! #Prinleaderchat
Aloha! Welcome to the #PrinLeaderChat 'Ohana. We are celebrating National Principals Month. Tonight we discuss One Thing You Would Improve. Please introduce yourselves.
A1: #prinleaderchat One thing I would change is to always have PD differentiation options. Just like students, principals & teachers all have different levels of prior knowledge, pacing, comfort with topics. Need to #differentiate
A1: CHOICE. Choice is a powerful motivator for students and staff alike. I would love to see professional development include more opportunities for staff choice! #PrinLeaderChat
A1: I would apply the principles of quality instruction to PD. PD should be engaging, should provide modeling, opportunities for practice. There should be follow-up that sustains the purpose of the PD. I also believe firmly in non-traditional PD opportunities! #Prinleaderchat
Chris from western PA. A1: Professional development needs to be more personalized, and viewed with a growth mindset rather than as a nuisance. #PrinLeaderChat
Yes! Just as we want our learners to have self-awareness and focus on growth, we should want that for teachers and support staff as well. #Prinleaderchat
Love this, Chris! Have you thought about PD on Twitter?! We did a Twitter chat on a PD book last spring. We loved it and got great feedback from the staff who participated. #DareToBeDifferent#PrinLeaderChat
A1: Mandatory requirement. Perceptions of professional equality fuel mandated PD, often for those who it’s not applicable. Give the power back. Choice, voice, individualized PD. #PrinLeaderChat

A2: School meetings should be more than informational in nature. We should be able to refocus our purpose and have critical conversations about mission and vision. It's a time for perspective-sharing, not lecture or PowerPoints. So much can be done virtually! #Prinleaderchat
A1 PLEASE DIFFERENTIATE! 1) Distribute needs survey to staff. 2) Create stations centered on needs. 3) Stations taught by expert staff-don't bring in "expert" from outside-expertise is always in the room 4) Ask for honest feedback 5) Call me. I'm happy to help! #PrinLeaderChat
I like the term professional learning instead of development. Learning is is driven by the learner while development is driven by someone else. #PrinLeaderChat

When we tell a room full of people with advanced degrees what they need to learn (minus systems & culture)...no one owns it. It’s okay to say it’s not possible to design PD for every professional, we can support them...then they own it. #PrinLeaderChat
A2. On Sundays - but never during a MN Vikings game - I created The Week Ahead that outlined all the specifics that would be in a staff meeting. The exception is providing an opportunity for ALL to have their ideas and voices heard. #Prinleaderchat
A2: I actually enjoy the meeting we have with staff! We try and showcase a student activity or accomplishment in front of teachers every time we meet. #PrinLeaderChat
I always enjoyed switching up the room the meetings were held in so educators could showcase their classroom environment with their peers. #Prinleaderchat
A2: Increase the relevance by sharing the ownership. Support ideas by creating opportunities for others to lead and guide the building. #PrinLeaderChat
A3: I would design assessments that provide teachers with insight into how learners are learning and thinking about a concept, rather than how well they can take a computer-based test. Assessments should inform instruction, not a spreadsheet. #Prinleaderchat
A3: #Prinleaderchat Actually wouldn't change the assessments, but would change the pressure we put on students, focus more on #growthmindset & improving how we leverage the knowledge we gain from the #data ! #assessments
A3. WOW! This is a huge question. The graphic below shows the evolution of assessment. It moves toward student investment in assessment. #PrinLeaderChat
A3. the challenge is not all kids learn same ways and they should be able to demonstrate learning in variety of ways (not just standard assessment). #PrinLeaderChat
You mentioned data, which reminded me of this graphic. I think it could be a great conversation starter during a PLC meeting. What are your thoughts? #PrinLeaderChat
A3: I would love to see assessments measure authentic student learning based on personalized learning opportunities and #studentagency! #PrinLeaderChat
A3: Can I pick 2? If not, Alignment; ensuring the assessments measure what we’re telling teachers to teach. If I get 2; Separation, division of assessment & evaluation for Ss. #PrinLeaderChat
A4. Education needs to focus more on skills and how kids transfer content knowledge in rigor/relevant ways. Less testing - more authentic learning #PrinLeaderChat
Yes, but I would add a third section on what you do with the data. Sometimes we are #data rich and information poor. They have collected so much data, but are not using it to guide or inform instruction. #Prinleaderchat
A4. After 40 yrs of this initiative and that new plan, I would improve prof learning of each educator. That's why I am retired but work each day on #BookCampPD and the website https://t.co/S5pzTtgW6A I want to help Ts learn more to make the best decisions for Ss #PrinLeaderChat
A4: I would prime students for curiosity - and encourage that. Standards are important, but too much rigidity reduces relevance and the application of content to real life. #Prinleaderchat
A4: I would also focus on equity - and integrate issues and discussion of equity into every classroom. What does it mean to be anti-racist? To be inclusive? #Prinleaderchat
A4: In my perfect world, education would be student driven. #StudentAgency, #PersonalizedLearning, & #StudentVoice would be the driving forces behind what students learn. Student interests & aptitudes would provide meaningful & relevant learning experiences. #PrinLeaderChat
A4: #prinleaderchat We have to figure out a way to keep great minds entering the field of teaching! #teachershortage is real. Equitable compensation & improved teacher training is a must!
A4: Better public relations to tell our story rather than the picture painted by politicians and the media. We do great things that nobody knows about. Invest in developing quality teachers. The teacher is the most important school-based factor in learning. #PrinLeaderChat
Often the two are, sadly, one and the same. Same pig, different lipstick. When the oatmeal is forced, the type of spoon used doesn’t matter to those required to eat. Our time should be spend aligning support to whatever THEY put in the bowl. #PrinLeaderChat
A4. I would work with stellar educators to end the school to prison pipeline that continues generation after generation in our country. #PrinLeaderChat
A4: Prove that education is not broken. Solid pedagogy is still crucial. While technology is great, it will never replace a passionate, caring, enthusiastic teacher. Invest in meaningful professional development for teachers, relevant learning for kids. #prinleaderchat
A1: PD should be transferable to the classroom the next day. It should be personalized to meet the needs of your staff so they can create lessons that engage students in learning, in curiosity, in enriching experiences for all stakeholders. #prinleaderchat
A3: Assessment should measure true mastery. If students don't do well, let them retake it or prove their mastery in another way. It's never about a grade. Personalize the assessment process and watch kids thrive. #prinleaderchat
