We’re here and ready to kick off a great conversation about #ContinuingEducation—as well as answer any questions you might have. Thanks again, @bmoreedchat, for letting us co-pilot the show tonight! #BmoreEdchat
Hey Justin. No pressure, but I would like you to consider joining the @LoyolaEducation Board of Advisors. We need your voice and wisdom at the table. #BmoreEdchat
That’s great to hear! It’s always important to continue furthering our own knowledge in any way we can. What source or sources do you find most helpful when doing your own research? #BmoreEdchat

A1: I’ll never get enough of Arts Integration, but I also would love to study more about mental health in children and practices to effectively bring positivity to struggling Ss. #BmoreEdchat
A2 depends on what I am learning about. In person is great when you want to be able to have a discussion but online works well just for delivering information. I have taken several online art classes now and I love it #bmoreedchat
#BmoreEdchat I have been attending a PLC geared towards special education for general educators. We have discussed universal design for learning, mindset and how general educators need to be prepared to address the needs of all students for the year 2020 goal.
Q2: Online All Day Baby. That’s a very personal preference though. My Masters was about 90% online and I loved that but my boyfriend hated it. It’s effective for me by letting me go at my own pace, and I never have to be late to class! #BmoreEdchat

A2: Very tough question!! I’m determined to make online teaching and learning as amazing as F2F classes. Like any new teaching strategy, it takes time and involves risking failure to figure out what works best. #BmoreEdchat
A2 For now online classes have filled the need for recertification, but the truly impactful ones are face-to-face self-selected PD sessions where learning happens from experiencing content. @facinghistory is one example. #BmoreEdchat
A2: Teaching like any art should be a balance. One overloaded strategy can be too much. I think online classes can happen in person through Twitter, @Flipgrid or other chat services. Best part is the in person reflection afterwards. #BmoreEdchat
A1: Restoritive practices. I want to enhance my understanding. It has helped me this year with my s’s. I’m glad for the learning I had and that have helped me build these connections. I would like to become more knowledgeable in order to continue my learning #BmoreEdchat
hi #bmoreedchat! I'm Sara, a K teacher in snowy Lake Tahoe, NV. I'm sorry I'm a bit late but I'm so happy to join you all tonight. I did 1 Masters online and 1 in person & learned that I am an in person kind of girl.
A2: I am so impressed that @LoyolaEducation Faculty embed Ignation pedagogy and synchronous sessions in our online and hybrid courses and CE. #BmoreEdchat
The field of education is constantly growing/evolving. It's important that we grow as well! Continuing our education allows us to do that. #bmoreedchat
We all learn differently! Historically, we’ve been a very F2F institution but are excited that we’re starting to get into the online learning space with some of our programs! #BmoreEdchat
A3 I'm not sure a masters is necessary, but frequent cycles of new learning is critical. I've sat in workshops that have transformed my teaching. #BmoreEdchat
#BmoreEdchat A3: Contiuous learning keeps teachers up to date on the nuances of their craft. Also, if we are advocating a growth mindset for Ss, we should lead by example.
A3: Is it really about the degree or about the ongoing need for PD and to encourage our teachers to find more effective ways to reach learners? I think it’s unfortunate that undergrads aren’t more prepared to start start the work of teaching. #BmoreEdchat
A3: If I expect my students to learn & grow then I must model the way as a lead learner. One cannot ask somebody to do something if one is not willing to try it first! #BmoreEdchat
A3 - One of my favorite Ghandi quotes: “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” We are never “finished” learning. Whether we continue formally or informally, we need to continue seeking out learning. #BmoreEdchat
A3: Teaching is a profession that grows each year. There are new strategies and schools of thought. Doesn’t every kid, as a learner, deserve the best and most innovative new strategies as a means to be taught? In order for that to happen, we need to learn them! #BmoreEdchat
A3: I believe people should earn a Master’s degree before they are teacher of record. This coincides with higher pay, more PD, and a commitment from MD to fund education as the top priority. #bmoreedchat
I like to tell my students that @CurrandIns_LU degree is so much more than #PD. In our master’s classes we can explore the past, dive deep, think through real dilemmas, & dream big! #bmoreedchat
Learning comes in many many forms, but there is something special about being a student again. Gives you great perspective about what it is to be a learner in the 21st century. #BmoreEdchat
Which is why it’s important to model different types of learning for our students. I share about the art classes I take and other learning im doing #BmoreEdchat

A4: balancing is tough. You need to prioritize your goals and then see where the time is for teaching, learning, and fun! Make time for yourself, always! #BmoreEdchat
#BmoreEdchat I think it’s a systematic way of approaching a topic(s) of study. Otherwise, at least the way I see it, it’s like you’ll always nibble from all over the appetizers without getting a full meal.
A4: Most of the things I learned from my grad courses I was able to apply immediately! I loved going to a class and implementing a strategy the next day! I feel like it's easy to balance when the two work hand in hand #bmoreedchat
If you want to make more $$, have to get masters. Though it takes a while to pay it off. $40,000 left in my own loans and in 2 years will have to pay for daughter's college. Teachers need to learn, and they need money. Just get the masters #BmoreEdchat
oh my gosh, absolutely not! I went to a really thought provoking @nwaisconnect workshop with @jsbteamfinch and a very practical and interesting 1 with @responsiveclass in Feb. Both were very worthwhile and important to my teaching. #bmoreedchat
In reply to
@justincholbrook, @NWAISconnect, @jsbteamfinch, @responsiveclass
A4 - Where does “teaching” end and “learning” begin? These two concepts are so intertwined for me. They happen together. Even when I was in the k-12 English classroom, my Ss pushed me to consider a book/story/poem in a different way. #BmoreEdchat
A4: All about organization. I used to block out time to ensure I was able to spend the time necessary to master the concepts. I agree wth @kait013087 that my master's applied directly to my students & leadership. Simply...it was fun. #BmoreEdchat
So you’re saying organization is a must when it comes to this job. Do you find that most of the student teachers you mentor already have that knowledge? #BmoreEdchat
A4 Apply what you are learning in the classes in your classroom context. If you are required to create projects or assessments, your students are the best group to do them with. Hit 2 targets with one assignment. #BmoreEdchat
A5: A few factors both education and personal factors. Proximity and price matter. A program which fits my hopes and interests, but the combination matters most. #BmoreEdchat
A5: A balance between the practical and the theoretical. It’s important to be able to apply what you learn but we cannot forget about the theoretical foundations of why we do what we do. #BmoreEdchat
This is a great point. I felt my undergraduate work was extremely theoretical, but my master's degree @LoyolaEducation provided a more balanced approach. I could literally apply something the next day in school. #BmoreEdchat

So fun! I definitely use @instagram for this. I posted lots of pictures of my ski vacation in February & lots of Ss commented that they saw them on their moms' phones We had good talks about overcoming fears, persevering when tired, value of travel, good friends etc. #bmoreedchat
A5: A growing trend: students want to see evidence that the program can be undertaken with minimal debt and that it leads to gainful employment. #BmoreEdchat
Practicality is another one. #BmoreEdchat Looking back, it’s easy to see what could’ve been streamlined because it isn’t a high level need in classrooms.
We’re glad to hear that, Justin! We work hard to ensure our graduate programs are full of information that each student can then apply to their actual jobs. Who needs extra busy work, anyway? We know we sure don’t! #BmoreEdchat
A6: My internship experiences are how I learned how to integrate all the learning into a cohesive strategy. Some things I learned didn't work...some did. That is ok! If I didn't have an opportunity to experiment, I wouldn't have grown as a leader and educator. #BmoreEdchat
I received my Master's Degree in leadership and reading. Shadowing a reading specialist was a great experience because it allowed me 2 really get a hands on view of what reading speciasts do. I learned so much from that! (Just was hard taking time off from my own Ss) #bmoreedchat
A6: Observing other teachers (in person or video) is the MOST effective practice there is. Want to try a new strategy? WATCH SOMEONE ELSE DO SOMETHING AWESOME. On some days I’m an innovator, and on others I’m a thief. Either way, my kids are smarter because of it. #BmoreEdchat
Well put. “Is it worth it?” More people outside the field have to see the value of education and attracting even more great minds to the field. #BmoreEdchat
A6: why do students have internships? To learn from others? Why do students go to school? To learn from their peers and teachers. Why do teachers observe others? To continue that learning and enrich my teaching. #BmoreEdchat
#BmoreEdchat A6: This is a biggie for me. I like transparency; I like sharing; I like “stealing”; I like innovating...we don’t have t reinvent the wheel, but we can use what we learn to improve and progress.
Shadowing, instructional rounds, collegial observations are all so important to new and veteran teachers alike! They help to constantly inform, excite and improve my teaching. #bmoreedchat
A7: Educators with a master's degree should be able to develop a love of learning that impacts their school communities for years to come. #BmoreEdchat
A7: challenge the status quo, work with the principal to improve instruction, and be willing to walk away otherwise. Said the guy with lots of privilege. #BmoreEdchat
It’s especially helpful to witness a lesson that didn’t go as planned. To watch someone you respect think on their feet and roll with the punches. #BmoreEdchat
A7: understand the possibilities that they can explore out there and learn how to successfully implement effective strategies in the classroom EVERY day. #BmoreEdchat
Yes! I couldn't agree more! Release time and substitute teacher support are really key for keeping current teachers excited and continually learning! #bmoreedchat
