  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:05 PM EST
Q1 - What do you think a student-led conference should look like? #5thchat cc: @amy_jeff95

HAPPENING NOW: @amy_jeff95 moderating a chat on student-led conferences. Follow along at #5thchat!
  • iowajonhuebner Feb 27 @ 8:07 PM EST
A1. I see students having a portfolio of work in front of them and explaining the importance of the work to their overall learning towards the objectives. #5thchat
  • ching__writer Feb 27 @ 8:07 PM EST
A1-is this like a parent teacher interview that is student led? #5thchat
  • msweisenbeck Feb 27 @ 8:08 PM EST
A1- I'm working towards that, but haven't quite gotten there- My vision is students will make honest reflections of their successes and challenges, and set goals that Ts and Ps can support. When given a chance Ss are very insightful #5thchat
  • bes_kgibson Feb 27 @ 8:08 PM EST
A1 Students taking an active role communicating areas of strength & weakness along with strategies to ensure further growth. #5thChat
  • nkenefick Feb 27 @ 8:08 PM EST
A1: A student led conference should focus on whatever the student wants to share or discuss #5thchat
  • martinteach Feb 27 @ 8:08 PM EST
#5thchat Are we talking a conference of concern or, for example, a conference to work on writing?
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:09 PM EST
Everyone does them differently. Some replace traditional teacher-parent conferences. I personally do them in addition to traditional conferences (kids present at home, but prepare at school). #5thchat

    End of semester/trimester conferences. #5thchat
    In reply to @martinteach
  • MsBazar5th Feb 27 @ 8:09 PM EST
A1: The topics during the S led conferences should be decided on with the help of the S. They should be able to share strengths and self-identified weaknesses. #5thchat
  • TatMaylor Feb 27 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1 Ss open their data folders, show the data and talk about their own strengths and then their weaknesses. Reflect on what they are doing to overcome their weaknesses. Talk to the Ps and Ts about what they think the Ps and Ts could do to help them in their learning. #5thchat
  • ching__writer Feb 27 @ 8:10 PM EST
But shouldn't the conference still be relevant to things like the curriculum and school? How can we give this responsibility to a 5th grader? #5thchat
    In reply to @nkenefick
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:11 PM EST
Q2 - What are the benefits of students leading their own conference? #5thchat
  • TatMaylor Feb 27 @ 8:12 PM EST
I view it differently than an interview. I see it more of a sales pitch from the students perspective about how they perceive their learning. Sharing where they are (their data), what they have done to get there, and how they plan to improve. #5thchat

A2- I think it's good to have the students at the conference instead of it just being between the teacher and parents. I think it puts less stress and anxiety on the parents and through the student, helps to form a bond between the adults as they work towards a common goal.
  • msweisenbeck Feb 27 @ 8:13 PM EST
A2- Ownership- Ss are more invested when they own their progress, data and goals. It can be a more positive experience for all involved! #5thchat
  • iowajonhuebner Feb 27 @ 8:13 PM EST
A2. It gives students the ownership of their own learning. They are in the ones in charge to prove that they understand the concepts. #5thchat
  • JJ_Burry Feb 27 @ 8:13 PM EST
A1: I'm currently working on this!! For our classroom, a student-led conference is: -scheduled by the student -expectations are set by the student -skills are shown to the teacher by the student -questions are asked by both student and teacher #5thchat

A2: When students can lead their own conferences it makes them feel empowered and take responsibility for their own actions. In the future they'll know how to regulate and evaluate themselves. #5thchat
    In reply to @PaulSolarz

Thanks. I will take a look at this. #5thchat

  • MsBazar5th Feb 27 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2: Empowerment. The Ss are taking ownership of their own learning. It is helping them learn to express themselves, share all levels of success, and learn new things about themselves. #5thchat
  • bes_kgibson Feb 27 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2 Ss can be more invested, especially when they're charting their data & can see what they do well & where they struggle. Some Ss have a hard time believing they have strengths so this can be motivating, & some don't think they have weaknesses so it can be enlightening.#5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:18 PM EST
Q3 - What is the teacher's role in the student led conference? #5thchat
  • JJ_Burry Feb 27 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2: Student-led conferences shifts the responsibility (and in turn, the learning) onto the student. This empowers them in the classroom, and it shows them that they can own their learning. #5thchat
  • TatMaylor Feb 27 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2 Ss Leading conference gives them ownership of their learning & study practices. It also allows for honest feedback. Give them a voice, build relationships, & they will let you know what could help them or what barriers we may not be aware of that’s causing struggle #5thchat
  • JerniganAlyssa Feb 27 @ 8:19 PM EST
I believe teachers should be a guide in making sure things that are important get addressed, this could be offering a paper or a repot card for students to walk through. #5thchat
    In reply to @PaulSolarz
  • ching__writer Feb 27 @ 8:20 PM EST
A3-That's a good question. I guess the teacher provides the framework of what will be discussed, kind of like being a moderator and stepping in when/if necessary. #5thchat
  • gdorn1 Feb 27 @ 8:20 PM EST
A1. I think a Ss led conference should look like a Ss leading the conference with a Teacher possibly facilitating and is there to answer questions that the parent may wish to address to gain more information than what was discussed. #5thchat
  • MsBazar5th Feb 27 @ 8:20 PM EST
A3: Facilitate and provide feedback. Part of Ss being able to take charge of their own conferences is a sense of self-confidence. This is a skill that the teacher should be supporting. Helping students realize their strengths, as well as their areas of growth. #5thchat
  • JerniganAlyssa Feb 27 @ 8:21 PM EST
A3:I believe teachers should be a guide in making sure things that are important get addressed, this could be offering a paper or a repot card for students to walk through. #5thchat

  • krista_miller Feb 27 @ 8:21 PM EST
A1: I think the S should create a slides to guide them through the conference discussing strengths & weaknesses and ways to grow in those weak areas. This should be led by the s and questions directed first to the s w/ the teacher there to back up #5thchat #IHMarchMadness
  • bes_kgibson Feb 27 @ 8:21 PM EST
A2: Equipping the student with tools needed to understand what the data means and how to respond to it. Ss can help communicate to their Ps what Ts have been trying to before this style conferencing. #5thchat

Popping into #5thchat tonight! A little late, but hi everyone 👋
  • iowajonhuebner Feb 27 @ 8:22 PM EST
Yes, I agree. I feel that as T, I will help guide students by asking clarifying questions when something the S says in unclear. I feel that Ts are just as important in student led conferences #5thchat

  • nkenefick Feb 27 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3: Teachers should facilitate the conference with guiding questions #5thchat
  • gdorn1 Feb 27 @ 8:23 PM EST
A2. The Ss take ownership of their own learning, they gain confidence in discussing their portfolio and work with parents, looking at their growth, where they need to work harder and set goals! #5thchat
  • JerniganAlyssa Feb 27 @ 8:23 PM EST
I totally agree that it gives them ownership and who knows they may reflect more on their everyday actions if they are accountable #5thchat
    In reply to @TatMaylor
  • TatMaylor Feb 27 @ 8:23 PM EST
A3 Schedule the conference. Confirm what they agree with, with their own data/observations. Give feedback on their own perception. Support the student. Make sure the meeting leaves with a plan for the student, teacher, and parents on next steps for continuing growth #5thchat
  • msweisenbeck Feb 27 @ 8:23 PM EST
A3- Ts help Ss collect data, encourage Ss who might struggle with their data, and serve a support and a mentor assist Ss meet goals they set for themselves. For years, Ts have led conferences and some Ps and Ss see them as a "Gotcha." We can help change that! #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:24 PM EST
    Q4 - What is the student's role in a student-led conference? #5thchat
  • krista_miller Feb 27 @ 8:24 PM EST
A2: This gives the s ownership in what they do. It allows them to view their own data and look for ways to improve and be proud of their success! #5thchat #IHMarchMadness
  • nkenefick Feb 27 @ 8:25 PM EST
A4: Students should be coming up with the main topics they want to discuss and they should be doing the majority of the talking #5thchat
  • krista_miller Feb 27 @ 8:26 PM EST
A3: ENCOURAGEMENT!! We must support the student and give the confirmation to parents on data. #5thchat #IHMarchMadness
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:26 PM EST
If you haven't checked out @KaizenaHQ and you use Google Docs with your students, you need to check them out right now! You'll be glad you did! :) #5thchat
  • gdorn1 Feb 27 @ 8:26 PM EST
A3. The teacher should act as the facilator. If the Ss is afraid to speak about points, the Teacher can help with any problems and clearify points that need to be addressed. The Ss should be the one presenting their information! #5thchat
  • 4XSoccermom Feb 27 @ 8:26 PM EST
A4 I am so late! I think the Ss role is to share their triumphs and their struggles and to talk about ways they need help from the adults. #5thChat
  • msweisenbeck Feb 27 @ 8:26 PM EST
A4- Ss should own them. Ss should be encouraged to share their thoughts/feelings about their education. Ts should listen and encourage. #5thchat
  • TatMaylor Feb 27 @ 8:27 PM EST
A4 Show and discuss their data trends. Describe their effort level in and out of the classroom. Talk about their strengths, interests, and favorite activities. Discuss their weaknesses and why they believe these struggles exist. What can the T & P do to help? #5thchat
  • krista_miller Feb 27 @ 8:27 PM EST
A4: The s prepares and leads the conference. It is up to them what we will discuss at the conference. It's a great time to reflect upon themselves throughout the year so far! #5thchat #IHMarchMadness
  • MsBazar5th Feb 27 @ 8:27 PM EST
A4: The S role would be to be honest with themselves, and to dig deep to truly reflect on their learning. So often, they don't dive deeper than the surface, and we want to encourage them to understand themselves in order to grow! #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:27 PM EST
    #5thchat
    • JerniganAlyssa Feb 27 @ 8:25 PM EST
A4: the student should be held accountable to address grades, behavior, and projects. This responsibility could have an impact and they may try harder to be able to show off to their parents
      In reply to @PaulSolarz
  • ching__writer Feb 27 @ 8:28 PM EST
A4- the student should talk about their areas of weaknesses as well as their strengths. This is a good opportunity for them to show what they need help with as well as improve in their confidence with what they're good at. #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:28 PM EST
Q5 - What artifacts of learning would students collect and how could they present those artifacts to parents? #5thchat
  • KaizenaHQ Feb 27 @ 8:29 PM EST
Haha, appreciate the shoutout Paul :) Happy to be here and learn from the amazing educators of #5thchat
    In reply to @PaulSolarz
  • gdorn1 Feb 27 @ 8:29 PM EST
A4. The Ss role is to lead the conference and for their voice to be heard as they are discussing their work. Showing growth in learning, what goals they feel need to be set for future improvement. #5thchat
  • ConnieLund25 Feb 27 @ 8:29 PM EST
    Ahhh I missed 5th chat! I forgot 😔... #5thchat
  • ching__writer Feb 27 @ 8:29 PM EST
A5- anything that is worth presenting, a project they did, an essay they wrote and did well in etc. students could even create a slideshow that showcases their achievements and their goals. #5thchat
  • jbazil Feb 27 @ 8:30 PM EST
A1 Students should be prepared, be able to list their strengths, weaknesses and show at way they can improve with a goal. These conferences should involve the teacher, parent and student. #IHMarchMadness #5thchat
  • iowajonhuebner Feb 27 @ 8:30 PM EST
A4. Students are the presenter. They decide what they want to show, how it relates to their learning, and how they are doing towards meeting grade level expectations. They are the experts on who they are as a learner. #5thchat
  • krista_miller Feb 27 @ 8:30 PM EST
A5: Ss could present in a Google Slideshow by inserting pictures they have taken of projects or entering in data they have tracked in areas. They can also create digital portfolios on #SeeSaw or projects on #Wixie. So many ways to share! #5thchat #IHMarchMadness
  • JerniganAlyssa Feb 27 @ 8:31 PM EST
A5: students could present any projects they're proud of, also their report card and they could follow a powerpoint or worksheet on points they wanted to discuss along with the handout a teacher provides. #5thchat
    In reply to @PaulSolarz
  • nkenefick Feb 27 @ 8:31 PM EST
A5: Anything they are proud to present or something they want to talk more about. They could present them to parents in some sort or presentation #5thchat
  • jbazil Feb 27 @ 8:31 PM EST
A2 Students are in charge, they are able to shine and show off their passion (#tlap) as well as share any areas they admit is a struggle. I would hope parents would argue with Ts less if Ss are leading. #IHMarchMadness #5thchat
  • TatMaylor Feb 27 @ 8:31 PM EST
A5 For our school: Report cards, behavior charts, STAR data, schoolnet data, FSA data, samples of classwork. Data logs with the weekly reflections. Any examples of their biggest struggles and what could be changed to help them (teaching style, activity, etc) #5thchat
  • MsBazar5th Feb 27 @ 8:31 PM EST
Q5: Artifacts could be links to work that they have created online, videos that have been recorded for reflection, science and social studies discovery journals. I think the best way to share on a regular basis is with a digital tool (Prezi, GoogleSlide, etc) #5thchat
  • jbazil Feb 27 @ 8:32 PM EST
A3 The teacher's role should be to help the student prepare ahead of time what they will say and any work they will show. The teacher should then help the student get start and moderate the conference as needed. #5thchat #IHMarchMadness
  • JerniganAlyssa Feb 27 @ 8:33 PM EST
Thats a smart idea to incorporate google slides, I didn't even think of that! I also liked how you mentioned that they could track their data, I feel like this would mean more to the student. #5thchat
    In reply to @krista_miller
  • jbazil Feb 27 @ 8:33 PM EST
A4 The student should work with the teacher to prepare for the conference, have their "presentation" ready to go whether that be a slide show, work samples, outline, etc. The student should be the primary talker in the conference. #IHMarchMadness #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:34 PM EST
Q6 - Will all students be able to participate in leading their own conference? How can we make it accessible to all? #5thchat
  • gdorn1 Feb 27 @ 8:34 PM EST
A5. I went to my daughter's english class one year, she gathered several composites of her writing over a certain time period. The class assignments their working on. Basically, anything that will show a P what type of work is done in the class, how growth is calc. #5thchat
  • iowajonhuebner Feb 27 @ 8:35 PM EST
Videos are an awesome idea. There is so much they could put together in short video clips, and have ready that night. #5thchat
    In reply to @MsBazar5th
  • ching__writer Feb 27 @ 8:35 PM EST
A6-I suppose if a student is unable to make it to class, they could use skype. Or perhaps, use a googledoc to write instead of talk and then the parents and teacher can write comments and ask qs. #5thchat
  • jbazil Feb 27 @ 8:36 PM EST
A5 Artifacts can be a students' recent assessment, a project, writing sample, behavior chart/Dojo Report, grade card. These can be presented to parents to help spark the conversation yet keep the conference on track. #Dojo #IHMarchMadness #5thchat
  • MrsShorr Feb 27 @ 8:36 PM EST
Wow! Just saw #5thchat is discussing student led conferences! A5 In addition to including artifacts, I ask Ss to complete a form to summarize things they are proud of & goals they want to set for themselves for the rest of the year.
  • JerniganAlyssa Feb 27 @ 8:36 PM EST
A6: I think the opportunity should be available for all but I think it should be seen a respected privilege so kids just can't skate by. Also, allowing every student time to prepare and urge all parent to come because the kids prepared it themselves. #5thchat
    In reply to @PaulSolarz
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:36 PM EST
Here is one of my student's "Student-Led Conferences" from the last trimester. Feel free to scroll through the slides and read her reflection. I'm proud of my 5th graders! They'll do another one in a week (End of 2nd Trimester): https://t.co/dQSsjlQIXm #5thchat
  • krista_miller Feb 27 @ 8:36 PM EST
A6: All ss should be given that opportunity - it's their way to take ownership in themself! We can give choice to ss on how they want to present themself and what they want to present! #5thchat #IHMarchMadness
    • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:34 PM EST
Q6 - Will all students be able to participate in leading their own conference? How can we make it accessible to all? #5thchat
  • MsBazar5th Feb 27 @ 8:37 PM EST
A6: I think all Ss are capable of leading their own conferences, but Ss will need varying degrees of T asst. in order to self-reflect. They will also have different artifacts to support. For differentiation I would have some students reflect on 1 aspect of their learning #5thchat
  • TatMaylor Feb 27 @ 8:38 PM EST
A6 Yes, but it may look different for each of the Ss and depending on the part of the year. I’d start with a template/outline and leading data chats with the students. Then, start giving them more of the discussion points as they become more comfortable. #5thchat
    • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:34 PM EST
Q6 - Will all students be able to participate in leading their own conference? How can we make it accessible to all? #5thchat
  • jbazil Feb 27 @ 8:39 PM EST
A6 Some Ss would need more support than others. Each conference would like different based on the Ss strengths & weaknesses. We can make this opportunity accessible to all by supporting each Ss as they need. #IHMarchMadness #5thchat
  • gdorn1 Feb 27 @ 8:39 PM EST
A6. All Ss are able to contribute some way in leading their conference, We need to look at each Ss on indiv. basis, some may require more help from the facilator, or T. Each Ss should be able to comment and describe their work portfolio. #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:40 PM EST
    Here's another Student Led Conference: https://t.co/J75IYI3AsW #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:40 PM EST
    Q7 - How does a student-led conference increase family engagement? #5thchat
  • JerniganAlyssa Feb 27 @ 8:44 PM EST
A7: parents may be more interested in what their children are interested in and they want to see learning through their eyes. Also, if their childs there the parents have to be there too seeing as how none of them can drive.#5thchat
    In reply to @PaulSolarz
  • iowajonhuebner Feb 27 @ 8:44 PM EST
A7. There is more engagement in S progress. I feel parents are more willing to ask questions about the artifacts Ss selected. #5thchat
  • gdorn1 Feb 27 @ 8:44 PM EST
A7. It welcomes Parents and family members into the school to participate in a learning/information event for their child presented by their child! #5thchat
  • nkenefick Feb 27 @ 8:44 PM EST
A7: Student led conferences would increase family engagement by simply getting parents involved and sharing their child’s accomplishments to be proud of #5thchat
  • MrsShorr Feb 27 @ 8:45 PM EST
I collected comments from Ss after our student led conferences to get their thoughts so I could share them at a staff meeting with colleagues. This slide shows a few of them! #5thchat
  • krista_miller Feb 27 @ 8:45 PM EST
A7: This builds that relationship between the student and parents. The parents are hearing about school directly from their child and sharing the excitement together of their successes and builds on the engagement of the family at school! #5thchat #IHMarchMadness
  • TatMaylor Feb 27 @ 8:46 PM EST
A7 S-led conferences are more prone to having everyone on the same page. Ss will speak in a way Ps will understand (for the most part) and be able to relate better and share what’s going on with their learning. Ps should feel more comfortable with their child than a T #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:46 PM EST
LAST QUESTION: Q8 - So we know that Student Led Conferences increase student ownership of learning, but HOW does it do that? Also, please share any resources, thoughts, ideas, questions about SLC's that you still have but haven't gotten to share! #5thchat
  • ching__writer Feb 27 @ 8:47 PM EST
A7-I think traditionally, parents would scold teachers for "not doing their job right", but if it comes from the students what their weaknesses and strengths are, then it gives a different perspective. Families can connect with the school. #5thchat
  • jbazil Feb 27 @ 8:47 PM EST
A7 For parents, know that their child is presenting will encourage them to go to the conference. Knowing their child has a presentation for them is motivation. I bet parent attendance would go up if more classrooms did student led conferences. #IHMarchMadness #5thchat
  • jbazil Feb 27 @ 8:49 PM EST
A8 If students know and are reminded of the student led conference from the beginning, they will take more ownership of their own work and behavior....keeps them accountable. #IHMarchMadness #5thchat

A8: If students can run their own conferences they are aware of all the expectations and requirements for the class. Also, when they have to relay the information they want their parents to be happy with their results. Lastly, they know their parents will attend.

  • MsBazar5th Feb 27 @ 8:50 PM EST
A8: It brings a sense of self-awareness to the Ss. So many times, they just glance at a returned paper or feedback and move on.A conference would allow them to actually pay attention to the meaning behind the "grade" and feedback, how it shows who they are as a learner. #5thchat
  • TatMaylor Feb 27 @ 8:50 PM EST
A8 The S has to reflect, evaluate, and find solutions for their learning. A student leading data chats and/or conferences can’t be a student that is just going through the motions. They must be engaged in their learning to discuss their learning. #5thchat
    • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:46 PM EST

  • krista_miller Feb 27 @ 8:50 PM EST
A8: It creates opportunities for ss to reflect on their work and what they are good at and what they need to work on and how they will do that. If the ss aren't engaged in what they are learning it will be tough to lead the conference. #5thchat #IHMarchMadness

LAST QUESTION: Q8 - So we know that Student Led Conferences increase student ownership of learning, but HOW does it do that? Also, please share any resources, thoughts, ideas, questions about SLC's that you still have but haven't gotten to share! #5thchat

A7 Student led conferences create a team feeling among students, parents & teachers. Hopefully the collaboration among everyone continues after the conference. #5thchat

A8. It allows for Ss voice where a Ss can speak up if they feel they are having difficulties or issues with work or people. It also allows them to control their own learning by setting goals where they need improvement. #5thchat

Spent the afternoon tearing though non-fiction text in a book hunt for text features. Ss will work hard on a clip to explain the purpose and usefulness of text features. #5thchat #gatorsareamazing #clips #iteach5th

These are the directions I give my students as they prepare their Student Led Conferences at school (and they present them at home). We brainstorm what slides should go into the presentation & then I send out a template on Google Classroom. #5thchat

A8- Student conferences increase student ownership of learning because students have to be active learners. They're essentially self evaluating themselves. They have this responsibility. Question: What is the minimum age of a student in a student conference? #5thchat

A8 If a S isn't participating in his/her conference, the S takes a position of an observer in his/her education. By participating, the S becomes a player on the team- and should realize that he/she is the MVP! #5thchat

Absolutely! If we can teach them to reflect and realign accordingly, we will have set them up for success greater than any standardized test could. #5thchat

My 5th graders are pros at Student Led Conferences (our modified way) - my belief is that you can go as young as you'd like as long as you're willing to scaffold the prep and the presentation! #5thchat
