#UKEdChat Q1
Are teaching skills the same for delivering good professional development? Any additional skills needed?
Pls use the hashtag & A1...
@UKEdChat
A1 Skills are very similar but not the same. As important as relevance is to students, it's critical to adult learners in PD! MUST show them how they need/want what you are sharing! #ukedchat
#ukedchat A1. Think you need to have good, appropriate content and an understanding of the needs of your audience. That's pretty similar to teaching...
A1: you may be good at teaching your subject but are the skills transferable? Can you reach other subject tutors? Can you show them how it could work for their subject? Can you engage and inspire adults like children? #ukedchat
A1. Very similar in the sense of understanding the needs and obstacles faced by your audience. I think the skill of being able to validate the strategies/ideas you are promoting is possibly more relevant when delivering CPD. #ukedchat
#UKEDChat A1 Agree as well; tailor style and content to audience; determine prior knowledge at outset; present and structure by learning outcomes; mixture of individual, paired and group work; present, apply, review; vary activities; final recap
A1: I believe one must be at the very top of their engagement game when providing PD. It helps to provide teacher choice and a lot of group interaction.
#ukedchat
#ukedchat A1 also an awareness when delivering that you may not be the most knowledgeable person in the room about a topic, unlike teaching a class where you'll likely be the the authority!
A1: Additional skills are needed and you should know the requirements of your audience, don’t presume, ask, deliver, ask for honest feedback, use the feedback to tweak your future delivery. #ukedchat#ukedsch
A1: There's plenty of similarities (e.g. leading a group/working towards an outcome/being resourceful/being adaptive) but I know plenty of teachers who feel much more confident teaching chn than adults #UKEdChat

@UKEdChat
A1: Most important things are to know the needs of your audience, make it relevant and interactive. Give them takeaways and ideas they can use tomorrow #UKedchat
A2 we try to use each other's knowledge in a range of ways to support CPD but there are times when a fresh approach/new face is the best option. It's about making an informed choice that will have the most impact.
A2: My school has regular meeting where we converse about things with other colleagues. I would love to see us do more lesson and tool sharing like we once did. It is hard to be a dog barking in your own back yard though. #ukedchat
A2 Not sure schools maximize the expertise of their staff--partly because Ts don't share their awesomeness. They incorrectly don't see themselves as expert w/ something to share with their colleagues. Lack of $ unfortunately often limits outside expert consultation #ukedchat
A1: important that the delivery of PD means that they actually get something out of it. Unlike teaching pupils where you might have one common outcome. You may have to cater for a plethora of outcomes #ukedchat
A2. We invited outside experts into one of my schools this week to deliver quality training to teachers. Sharing practice is valuable; but so too are fresh eyes, different perspectives and a range of experience that comes from people notable in their field #UKEdChat
Q2: there's definitely a mixture of both however it's been a while since we've had a worthy expert. Think we'd have preferred a decent lunch and a chance to just share good practice instead of the last guy. Waste of time & money #ukedchat
#ukedchat A2 personally I think it could be used better. Many colleagues have a wide tange of expertise in different areas and would be good to learn more from one another. Outside experts are hired on average twice per year for staff training.
A2: Yes this year everyone is working across departments where ALL staff within teams are delivering a T & L breakfast, a twilight CPD, producing a T & L Bulletin. The results are amazing all planned by teachers. #ukedsch#ukedchat
A2 Yes. Always nice to get ideas from those outside the school community though. As a Health Mentor I am often classed as an outside expert myself to deliver cpd though #UKEdChat
#UKEDChat A2 - Mulitple Qs here; We use internal trawls to participate in projects; e.g. teams to delivery training to staff and partners; also use guest speakers (different from hiring); think budgets issue with hiring nowadays, but sometime specialist subjects need specialists
Quality control is important. Did SLT meet with outside expert first, converse and research before making the booking? Doing your homework is key #UKEdChat
A2: In my district, we have an instructional coach (me) who provides job-embedded professional development on a regular basis. It has been a game-changer!!
Read more about it here:
https://t.co/qAFF7UaEiB#ukedchat
#ukedchat a2 when staff have time to develop their own knowledge further they often feedback effectively and outside support isn't often required but time is required upfront for staff to develop
#UKEdChat Q3
What constitutes poor professional development in your option? Can you cite examples you have experienced?
Pls use the hashtag & A3...

A1: Think there is a need to be aware not to come across as patronising to adults - everyone is a proffesional in the CPD & being aware of tone is important
A2. Centrally organised exposure for local school leaders to outside experts has been enormously valuable to me. One of my schools has based its approach to learning and teaching on the philosophy of @OTeaching. #UKEdChat
A2. We use a lot of the expertise of staff - particularly for optional twilight sessions. I think this is really beneficial as the people delivering really understand the specific demands and challeneges facing your individual school #ukedchat
We asked criteria for choices. They refused to discuss however "took on board staff feedback". We also asked cost and then it got a little 'testy'. #ukedchat
A2: Feedback from our recent full team meeting asked for more time for their team mates to share their experiences and knowledge. Explore the teams wealth of knowledge before thinking of going external. #ukedchat
I think there is a false expectation that paying for an 'expert' ensures good CPD. Being cynical, it is easier to hire in outside expertise. Also very tight time constraints on teachers, schools need to make time for professional development of staff a priority A2 #ukedchat
Not enough. Staff are underused when it comes to pd as they could be more in tune with the needs of the school. I guess schools are quick to get someone in to make it worthwhile. A deeper consultation period required? #ukedchat
A3 when you go to training that is just going through the motions, is telling you the same old things, shows no innovation or gives no real suggestions, spends the entire session getting you to focus on issues not solutions #ukedchat
@ukedchat@ukedsch#ukedchat
A3 poor CPD is badly delivered, non specific and generic. Poor CPD is largely connected to a lack of clarity by senior leaders about the rationale behind the training.
In reply to
@UKEdSch, @ukedchat, @ukedchat, @UKEdSch
#a3#UKEDChat rather be specific, but wide variety .. Not practising what was being preached; just preaching; not personalising and contextualising; more concerned about getting through the planned content than ensuring relevance and we were taking it in and learning
A2: Appreciate the value of honest feedback from any training session. CPD time is precious, any feedback should determine further CPD for best value #ukedchat
Q3: Irrelevant, incorrect level for my knowledge/skill makes poor PD in my opinion. Also, must have time for independent exploration & reflection! Attended one without it--we were expected to explore/reflect on our own time after the workshop. Never got around to that. #ukedchat
@PrimaryRocks1@PR_History#primaryed#ukedchat
Anyone know if a resource of this type exists? Subject knowledge 'primer' for each area of the history curriculum in a single volume?
Is there a single text aimed at primary teachers which covers the content of the KS1/2 history curriculum? A solid 30 page chapter for each statutory topic option - chapter on Maya, a chapter on Benin, a chapter on Vikings and Anglo-Saxons, on Greece, on Roman conquest etc...
A3: Presuming one shoe fits all, it’s important to give staff choices for CPD. We ask staff what they would like & then they choose the sessions they would like to attend. #ukedchat#ukedsch
A3: Individuals who stand up in front and read what is on the slides for their presentations is poor PD. Not to sound mean, but I can read. Please teach me something. #ukedchat
A3 #ukedchat when it cannot be implemented in the every day teaching/learning of the pupils. When it doesn’t relate to practice. Grateful for all pd days. Only had one experience when the educator nearly put me to sleep from tlking so slowly

A3. I think anything that is an 'update'or 'refresher' feels like a wasted opportunity in terms of using CPD time. I feel that this is something that can be done independently and instead use CPD time where staff are together to share good practice. #Ukedchat
A3: sitting in a big lecture hall listening to a power point with little to no engagement being subjected to general motivational chatter that could maybe be applied to my personal setting within the school. Rant over #ukedchat love a bit of controversial pd allows discussions.
A3. Also, anything that hasn't been adapted for your school. Hate it when you get the sense of someone from outside coming in and presenting exactly the same information at all schools regardless of context #ukedchat
I still think #teachmeets are a great model for innovative CPD which has an instance impact. Catalytic CPD if you like, but it's not the only solution. There are times when you need the boring theory- safeguarding or HR elements, for instance... #ukedchat

#A4#UKEdchat Get participants involved, feed off their energy, ideas & expertise; Show them what they have taken from it, or can add to it. (Don't need them to know I am expert at end, but want them to to know if they knew a lot already, but know more leaving
A4. Experiencing something different to your own school context. Sometimes validates what you do; sometimes opens your eyes to a different way. Allows you to network. Allows you to escape your own “bubble.” #UKEdChat
We plan the year ahead where staff have specific directed time throughout the year which is for planning their CPD sessions. Staff are trusted and involved everyone at all levels including SLT. #ukedchat#ukedsch
A4 Excellent PD includes time for independent, small group, and large group reflection. I need that time to process the learning in my own head, talk it out with a small group, & hear a few large group thoughts to help me better implement the learning. #ukedchat
Professional development that doesn’t target the needs of the individual. PD should be more personalised, include more active learning strategies and follow up support and reflection, in order to see the impact of the learning and development #ukedchat
Like this - our admin staff were given this option for Xmas training schedule; even though I wasn't involved I could see they were more engaged in the building and there was a buzz
A3: when they are an expert in 'stretch and challenge' but actually EVERTHING they are talking about is 'differentiation'. Know your stuff *experts! #ukedchat
A4 #UKEDChat New ways of teaching, hands on practice, ideas, resources. Why does something work, why it doesn’t. When theories are explained because they have substance and not just to be sold.
A4: Bespoke CPD through coaching. I’ve started trialling this at our school & the results are amazing, staff are being up skilled, it’s confidential & we support staff to achieve their aspirations. #ukedchat#ukedsch
Agreed. Given time to prep will result in some excellent pd. the best development I have experienced has been with discussing with members of the school. No need for an external facilitator. #ukedchat There is always a need for external on more meaty topics of development.

A4. Great energy and enthusiasm from those leading. Innovative and new ideas, resources and ways of doing things. Conversations with staff, online courses and twitter chats have helped me greatly #UKEdChat
A4. I work as an assessor for @iqmaward, I sit on the IOM fostering panel and am involved with my union. I class this as ongoing CPD for my headship and I class my headship as ongoing CPD for my other responsibilities. I’m always learning. Always. That’s a CPD mindset #UKEdChat
YES! If it has no measurable impact, why are we spending our time on it? My next question is HOW to prove impact? I work for an area/regional education agency. Using student data is not a clear cut as it would be for a classroom teacher. #ukedchat

We had @pivotalpaul in years before everybody else. That handshake at the door is the biggest take away and we still, years later talk about that pd. Passion, knowledge, real experience (and winning a bottle of wine)...#ifyouknowyouknow#ukedchat
A2: My school runs ‘workshop afternoons’ - staff who would like to run a workshop can do so, and the other staff members sign up to attend the one that interests them - it’s great for taking control of our own CPD! #ukedchat
Bespoke pd. had a series of twilights where staff signed up to workshops of interest delivered by in house staff. Best external was all about blp (guy claxton) really thought provoking. #ukedchat
Agreed. Too often there's no time or incentive to implement and then good ideas get forgotten or no sense of urgency is created. Passion and inspiration are key #UKedchat
@ukedchat@ukedsch#ukedchat a4 CPD that is linked to appraisal and is driven by the individual actually wanting to improve. That's a good start. Being able to see that the CPD has made a difference makes you want more of it. Follows the logic of James Nottingham's 'Learning Pit'
Planning of CPD Training is a big barrier. Move away from a '1 Day, Tea and Biscuits' style of training. Let it become a course, feedback elements at each stage. Room to make changes of something doesn't work. Built in impact assessment. #ukedchat
A4: I choose my own pd using moocs. This is making a huge difference to my own teaching prac and I add useful stuff to my PGCE sessions that I've been learning about only days before. And obvs Twitter sharing! #ukedchat
A2: We use the expertise of staff over outside support the majority of the time, but we also work as part of a cluster of schools, so I feel like our in-school experts are becoming better as a result of communally shared best practice #UKEdChat
#A5#UKEdchat I think good support materials allow for more flexibility. More advanced participants have other work to do, newer participants have support materials to guide them; everyone has reference material when they leave
Good old spot the difference! After Y7 Hastings assessments I realised just how much some pupils struggle with explanation, hoping this will make an impact from acting upon #Feedback#historyteacher#progress#ukedchat
A4- yes agree exploring & developing subject knowledge & pedagogy underpinned by research & best practice. Teachers talking to other teachers about T&L #ukedchat

A5: Materials & delivery are really important. A few years ago our twilight session was a treasure hunt around the School based on data questions. It’s was very competitive & fun you forgot you were learning! #UKEDChat#ukedsch
A5 #ukedchat supporting materials definitely improve the training experience. It’s best when you can take something away with you to look back on it in your own time ie. a book, list of resources.
A5. It has to be something that still makes person to the person reading it a few months later when looking back over it. PPT slides which make no sense without the verbal explanation are no use as a take away material #ukedchat
A5. More than supporting materials, having an outside expert who stays with you after the initial training or course. Someone to answer emails, bounce ideas off & revisits periodically. @MorrellsHand do exactly this for us. Development becomes powerful and journey-led #UKEdChat
So agree with you. We all focus on only one thing a year within our teams so we can plan, research, deliver, tweak, show impact but continue to develop throughout the year.
..yes but always with flexibility for each teacher using them to personalise and improve them them. We need to make trainees aware of free @OERCommons as so many are not #ukedchat
A5: I love supporting materials but in reality I rarely use them again. If the pd worked, its there in my head. Im trialling it asap and rarely read back over notes unless they've done my work for me...sow exemplars, resources I can use #ukedchat
A3: For me it's CPD that is completely impersonal, i.e. no attempts to collect the current ability/knowledge/skills of the attendees whatsoever. A quick pre-CPD survey can make a huge difference. We do it with parents before we run workshops to avoid pitching it wrong. #UKEdChat
#a4#ukedchat I did a guest spot with teaching assistants and noticed how much more engaged they were when I started talking strategies that worked for me one time and not the next, so we could reflect on the why's of my ideas and theirs #reflectivepractitioners
#ukedchat a5 sometimes helps and gives a reference point afterwards but the best training I have experienced engages me, allows me to practise/demo and embed meaning I don't need to take notes/printouts away. But that's my way of learning.
A3: When you’re told that you have to bring evidence that you have implemented x/y/z to the next staff meeting and present your findings - sometimes it just doesn’t match with your teaching style and you aren’t given the option to decide whether to use it of not #UKEDChat
A5 Living, breathing support materials are the ones I like the best. All the content in one place for later reference...and the ability to adjust/add content to better meet needs of Ts as they are learning. #ukedchat
#ukedchat teachers who have been teaching for many years can often stick to what they know and may find it harder to try out new things. It is imperative teachers keep up with the times. PD is a must for all. Good PD is even better!
A2. Once upon a time in a school long ago we did weekly sessions for 30 mins in our lunch hour for each other. We were passionate and felt appreciated. We were given choice and prep time if we offered to deliver sessions #ukedchat
A6. I think you can see this quite often - along with forced analogies that don't really work in an attempt to tie everything into said inspirational message #ukedchat
A4: Tailoring the training towards your delegate's needs (pre-CPD survey), staying focused on a SMART target objective, purposeful/practical takeaway activities/resources, and must be based on research/evidence of effective practice. #UKEdChat
#a6#ukedchat personally speaking, watch me switch off! It needs to be real; no two classrooms or students are ever the same; I need substance, reality, personal experiences; context; evidence; debate
#ukedchat people want something they can quote. You only need to check out inspirational quotes on Facebook. They're the hook into deeper thinking (hopefully)
A5: Giving people a chance to reflect on a few relevant things is much better than overkill which can often lead to confusion. Overviews and examples are good to take away as reminders #UKedchat
#UKEdChat Q7
Other than training sessions in schools, how else can teachers share their expertise?
Pls use the hashtag & A7...

A6: I haven't had that experience thankfully. Unfortunately it's either been amazing or shocking in terms of substance. No real message or slogan #ukedchat
Demon Tweak of the week, once a week during morning briefing, one member of staff to share a simple tweak staff can use easily within lessons #ukedchat#ukedsch
#A7#UKEdChat Social media, European projects; school partnerships, external CPD, but more commonly (because of time constraints), meetings, over coffee, in the corridor …
A6 "Substance over style" comes to mind...but I love a well-connected quotation/message/video as long as it's not overshadowing weak substance. But since I personally enjoy them, I've seen many of them, so a trainer better have a strong one! #ukedchat
A7. As an #IQM Centre if Excellence or flagship school you join a cluster of like-minded schools and meet up termly. Meetings involve discussions around an agreed theme. #UKEdChat
A1 #UKEdchat Good training needs a variety of skills especially to realize when things aren’t going well & being able to adapt things. Need to remember it is adults not children!

How to keep teachers in teaching
https://t.co/eBJlvGKe3v#ukedchat
#ukedchat a7 number 1 has to be online but how inspiring it is to go visit other schools and look at environment, work and teachers styles/ideas etc. unfortunately funding has reduced that nowadays.
A7: twitter is a great forum for discussion.teachmeets are good. Love the subject specific conferences. A great opportunity to meet a diverse range of people. You can pick up so much. #ukedchat
A7:SHOW-SHARE-STEAL this is our focus before half term, we are going to have a pop up morning breakfast ‘revision ideas’ and staff can voluntarily contribute. They can contribute on our board until June. #ukedchat#ukedsch

#ukedchat#a8 don't try and be perfect, it's too exhausting and it's unsustainable. Just do your best and have the children at the centre of everything you do.
#A8#UKEdChat 2 things … Ask yourself how you know what the students have learned, not how you know what you have taught
Simple question: Would you want to be a student in your own class?
A8: a friend of mine said "it not all about you, it's not about you!" You can easily get consumed by 'your' performance in school and lose sight of providing opportunities in and out of the classroom for students. #ukedchat
A8: Reflect all the time because you make and shape the environment. If it was great, why? If it wasn’t, why? Don’t be afraid to ask Ss their views too 😊 #ukedchat
A8: never stop learning. To be a good facilitator of learning you need to be in that process too. Your training doesn't end with the nqt year #ukedchat
A8: No matter how far you move up the ladder remember your teaching & Learning comes first, if it benefits children it’s worth doing & always lead by example. #ukedchat#ukedsch

Teaching is an art. Artists will tell you it will never be perfect so never don't beat yourself up. Every day you try, succeed, fail but, most importantly, GROW. That's what makes an artist.
Plus a bit if insanity (or wine)
