#games4ed Archive
#games4ed discussions cover ways in which gaming can be used in education. Games mirror the way the human mind was designed to learn. They motivate players to take risks and actions, persevere through failures, set and achieve increasingly difficult goals, and devote attention, time, and effort to acquiring knowledge and skills. All this while the game is tracking the player’s actions and assessing the player’s achievements and skills. Isn’t this what we want from education?

Ivan K-5 NJ Explore/Killer
Hey Ivan! Glad to see you!
I'm excited to get started in this chat! I'm Kelsey from New Orleans, LA.
Thanks, great topic tonight.
Hi all. Dianne 4/5 T from soCal. Guess I would be a socialite achiever
Mitch, probably social with some explorer from Mamaroneck NY
Hey , Keegan here, Educational Technologist . Just returning from vacation. For Bartle player type, I’m guessing achiever.
Always great to have you with us, Mitch!
Hi &
Michele, Explorer and MS ELA teacher in NY, adjunct professor of literacy, blogger, mom, and lots more
Awesome! Glad to have you here, Dianne!
I'm definitely an Achiever. I love to collect those points!
Whaddya know, I'm an explorer, too! :)
Melissa from Nebraska, 11-12 ELA. Explorer first, then achiever.
Where did you go for vaca, Keegan?
Katherine Goyette, Edtech Integration Consultant from Central California. Game type: explorer
Becky Bogard, Cincinnati, Ohio; I'm an explorer!
Yay, just like me! Welcome!!
Come on, there has to be some more killers here....nobody plays FPS??
Katie, High School Teacher Librarian in CA. OMG I'm a Killer.....explains why Bunco makes my skin crawl.
Seattle. Drive across the country kind of trip :)
After taking the quiz, apparently I am an Explorer. Who knew? :)
Hi! Tracy from St. Louis, MO. Kindergarten teacher. Love using games in my class!
That's still awesome! I'm explorer first, then an achiever.
Hi Mitch, I teach in Rye - we are like neighbors!
So glad you're here! And love the last name! Lots of Czaplas in my husband's family!
Socializer did come in 2nd, so I was close to what I thought. Makes sense for how I run my class though
Liz from Indiana.i teach bio, health, and PE
It's funny how we run our games based on what we are. I need to do more for socializers!
A1 helps you set up meaningful challenges to bring out their best
Knowing ur Ss so important: multiple intelligences, Array Inventory, Bartle's player types. Helps for grouping, gaming &learning
Though I would say anyone with curiosity is automatically an explorer-type, and that's most of us.
Q1: How can knowing your students’ types be beneficial to you?
Cool. Do you use games in your classes?
A1: Knowing my Ss helps so that everyone has a role. Works for PBL as well
A1: It's helpful in setting up guilds, too, if you're looking for a mix
A1: It's essential to get to know who they really are, to understand them, and to plan instruction to best engage them.
It's easy to teach to students who are like you, but it can be hard to reach your opposite! Knowing type would help!
A1: Knowing our students allows us to create learning experiences that align to their natural curiosity, intrinsic motivation.
A1) Bartle player types can help inform how to structure activities to engage students. Some want completive, others badges, etc.
I use platform + use gaming elements I create to add to the features of Classcraft
Great point. Always have to be aware of those who are diff
A1: Also great for grouping, and collaboration/activities/projects...and of course, games!
A1 Gamify- Bartle player style is just as important as accommodating learning syle. Feeding Ss' drive increases participation
A1 also player types can spark really cool discussions and engage Ss
A1: Student type can help determine engagement, and ultimately, learning. No engagement = no learning.
That is so true! I'm not a socializer, so I've realized my game has major weaknesses there to be remedied this yr
Exactly, helps for differentiation and engagement https://t.co/KMJ8MTcdFf
A1: It's essential to get to know who they really are, to understand them, and to plan instruction to best engage them.
Yes! We want to capitalize on what drives our students to push them to reach their potential. All about motivation!
That's a great point about knowing the types for !
I imagine that we all have a bit of all four types in us, just some types are stronger than others
Hiya Liz! Glad you made it!!
Knowing your Ss player types helps form teams that are balanced, fair & promote positive gaming
Especially if you have a class heavy in one area...you can really cater to them
A1: Teaching students to value each others' learning types enhances empathy & allows them to better work collaboratively.
I would agree, except I know some S's who are pure killer/achiever.
I'm definitely not a killer; I love story-driven, creative, or puzzle games, so I need to EXPLORE killer games, lol ;)
thanks! Waiting to pick up son from work, so following the cgat!
I tend to focus on leader boards....that might only be hit 1/4 of the need for my students!!!!
Yes, like multiple intelligences some stronger than others, allow us to see our strengths/Weaknesses https://t.co/RnRrUv1r4f
I imagine that we all have a bit of all four types in us, just some types are stronger than others
Even better when it pushes me to new instructional places! Keeps it fun & dynamic for teachers. :)
And maybe less...socializers tend to be the "larger" crew of the four
Great point about empathy. Don't always think about that in context of games
A1 by knowing your students you can personalize it to their types to keep them engaged
Yes, if we are going to push our Ss we as Ts need to be pushed too https://t.co/iExyKRgKL4
Even better when it pushes me to new instructional places! Keeps it fun & dynamic for teachers. :)
I agree. I tend to shy away from games with that aspect and don't want to bring it into class
Adam here middle school teacher out of Wisconsin
That poll was NOT taken on Steam users!
Awesome ppl. Gr8 platform. Always developing &adding new 2keep Ts&Ss engaged & excited abt https://t.co/qza8sT7Ca2
. I was just talking to the folks. Great product and really nice people.
Amanda from MO... definitely a Achiever
A2: That's easy for me, many PBLs have a huge social component, lots of other act where Ss must collab
I stuggle with this because I am more status motivated player, need more ways to engage Ss
LOL! Yes, found that in Google Images. Have no idea about demographics! But socializers was higher than I thought
Q2: They are doing what T's already want them to do: let them spread their wings and give them some autonomy.
This convo reminds me of a book: Differentiation Through Personality about Myers Briggs
Loved talking to them at ISTE. And great to work with. My Ss love it, too!
Games like where Ss working together supports socializers and promotes positive interaction among Ss
Haven't heard of that one. Sounds interesting
Not related to games, but helpful tips and templates for reaching your opposite type
I have a test to see where students were pretty close to this but more achievers
I am an achiever, but the other types are all very close.
Hi Amanda! We're on Q2 right now: How to reach socializers in our classes
Q2) Allow opportunities for collaboration in instruction!
A2: While gaming, set up simultaneous twitter, google classroom, or edmodo conversation to allow for collaboration, team-building.
Interesting! And there are other quizzes...don't know how they compare.
A2 socializers usually don't want to let their teams down
Did you get your Magic Potion water bottle?! I asked Shawn & Devon to set up a store for Ts 2 buy online
I'm trying to integrate more of that aspect in my class, all have strengths
A2: Socializers can work with other students to explore and achieve. I'm not so sure about encouraging the killer type in class.
Hey there, my friend!! Recovering from ISTE? I'm right with you. I need more socializing aspect for my Ss!
I’m just going to assume that one was 100% accurate. ;)
A2 providing students with a place to display achievements or time to interact with other players around the game
Finally got on at ISTE--awesome app! Loved it!
Where were you hiding at ; were you a ?
Never heard of Goose Chase, but it looks really cool!
Hello, that's why I was created to inspire kids practice math.
My Ss loved it. I will create one for the first day of school but also have - tough choices
Q3: Q3: How can you make your griefers/killers be a positive impact rather than a negative one?
https://t.co/tDRuxY0R1F
killers hep drive strategy I call them planers or a attackers at school
I'm doing one for the first day this year! Super stoked for it!
Just got my and cannot wait to use it with my Ss and Ts alike
Q3: Allow them to be part of the team by ensuring instruction enables them to do what they enjoy to the benefit of the team.
A2: Creating culture where Ss can socialize with all.
Hmm, they never offered me the water bottle :-(
And & digital breakouts would be super great for this!
A3: In other words, we must include their proclivity, not try to change it to something else.
A3: That's a hard one. Suggestions?
No, but I was at coffee!! Then had to head home yesterday & missed the board game night :(
For example, killers love to battle, but they can fight monsters to help achieve a goal.
A3 items that allow or nullify loss, it adds strategy and allows these players to embrace their style of play
Instead of being aggressive towards other S's.
Our Makerspace now has 2 boxes so I will be able to use it more often w/big class
the board game night looked fun was upset I couldn’t make it
that's awesome! positive spins always work. and you answered A3 :)
School culture crushes the killer-type, they are the most estranged from the educational process. We MUST engage them.
What are some things you're doing to do it successfully? Any issues with them keeping focus?
I love mom paid me to say that tho
A3 Killers get valuable XP points for bringing up someone in bottom 1/4
A3: I have lots of "Silent Killers" (passive). Killers motivate some & annoy others. Need to balance out types of games w/killers
Killers only care about xp points if they are achiever-type also.
We'll have to do a board game night in San Antonio!
Since I am not this type, and new to games, what is the "killer-type"?
A3) Focus on how learning empowers them. Engage them with empowering other Ss using their knowledge —> up their reputation.
A3: Killers are strategy-driven. Use their determination to motivate defeat of the problem.
Excellent way to leverage strengths by encouraging students to contribute to team, through individual success.
They like to fight, taunt, defeat others, and WIN.
A3 killers can be like lawyers
I really love Katie's idea here! Good one! https://t.co/S8d88bI9uB
A3 Killers get valuable XP points for bringing up someone in bottom 1/4
A3) Or just spawn some class NPCs to be targets! ;)
agreed competition can be a good thing and these Ss love it, it can have a place in the classroom
I like this! Maybe have them teach another student to win a fight, so it's not just about them as an individual
Ok, can think of a few like that
Good point. And I try to develop my game where Ss can't target single students, only teams
True, they're hung up on LeaderBoards. My Adventure Quest brought 2forefront all killers in my classroom https://t.co/eE5orFZ5dY
Killers only care about xp points if they are achiever-type also.
chatters, has topic of "Games", starting now! Anyone brave enough to participate in 2 chats simultaneously? :)
allowing students to draft players for groups based on blind skill resumes might hel
Taunting and Putdowns = loose valuable XP and health points https://t.co/e1PhmWoEk9
They like to fight, taunt, defeat others, and WIN.
this is awesome can balance the game out too
helps avoids that bullying aspect
Gotta let killers kill....but not other S's.
Great idea. Can be speed team building activity to select teams & create resume/inventory 4selection https://t.co/MIelDsoRxD
allowing students to draft players for groups based on blind skill resumes might hel
Taunting could be seen as bullying...definitely loss of points for those actions.
My Ss went nuts over the stickers when I gave them out for winning boss battles this spring!
A4: Explorers need opportunity for creativity! The more open ended the game, the better.
boss battles can be good for this I do this on review days in my game
Q4: How do you/can you provide excitement for your explorers? Any great examples from your classroom? https://t.co/Hmpmx1VkIh
A4: Give them a new world.
A4) Use their curiosity to suck them into learning more! Hide meta items/knowledge across a Unit to engage perhaps?
A4: Especially fantasy, role-playing games.
A4: Bringing in new aspects of games, add easter eggs, anything for explorer to "find",
A4: On Google Draw, you can link invisible shapes to other websites--a great way to engage explorers!
A4 side quest are great for the xpler type, than can pick what they want to learn and when they do it
A4: Create a game of clues, such as or even better, allow students to create a challenge for their peers.
A4 explorers need novelty and complexity; don't make things too simple
STEM challenges, Lego Quests, quick fire pursuits, bingo are all great gaming activities for Explorers
Invisible shapes? Sounds intriguing
A4) One example I’ve seen is hiding information in readings/instructions, such as weblink or answers to extra credit questions.
Do you change worlds during the school year? I've thought of this, but been daunted by the work
What?!? That's so cool! I need to go try this NOW!
A4: Have a virtual brag board where students can share with their discoveries and "teach" other Ss.
4 Like sandbox games are perfect for explorers https://t.co/kz59ByfKC3
A4: Explorers need opportunity for creativity! The more open ended the game, the better.
Q4b: What are some of the coolest Easter Eggs/hidden items/hidden quests you've done?
breakouts a great for all types they fit the gamified class so well as mini games or quest
Kelsey has such a cool idea here! Padlet would be super awesome for this! https://t.co/LxNUcrjp38
A4: Have a virtual brag board where students can share with their discoveries and "teach" other Ss.
had a chat about this last night. Great for someone new to this https://t.co/TEu3WCoxWN
Q4b: What are some of the coolest Easter Eggs/hidden items/hidden quests you've done?
fits the waster egg talk from last night
Yes, there always needs to be something new for explorers, which is the natural curiosity all students have.
I need to do more easter eggs in my repertoire of teaching. I always want 2put cyphers & codes embedded in my interactive foldable
Yep, just make a shape, link it, then change to color and line to invisible! Voila!
is a fantastic resource! Love those folks! I missed the chat...still on the road last night!
I had quest where Ss had to find clues around the school have heard of ones that go around the community
I thought of that as this line of conversation went on! Wish I hadn't been on the road last night during the chat!
This is why I love these. Thx for all the many great ideas
QR Codes seem too obvious
And will be here in July to talk about ARGs, which Explorers would love, too!
A4 Let explorers help develop the next level.
not if they take you to a clue, I also put fake ones up that were just a pic of me making a face
Q5: In what ways do you/could you recognize your achievers? Leaderboards are a goto here, but how else? https://t.co/getvJIAPI1
is hosting the July 21st chat!! :)
A5: Celebrate student achievement by allowing students to teach peers as "experts"
Cool idea! I would love this! Or even have them create the world!
I will have to use that - especially the red herrings https://t.co/2kjKHW442q
not if they take you to a clue, I also put fake ones up that were just a pic of me making a face
A5: In elem, Ss will do anyting for stickers, also badges, class rewards such as choose own seat
A5 for achievers, set goals; don't tell them how
I actually like phyical ones that they can display on their binders, also love showing off what Items they get
Great idea! Makes a difference & impact for other students too! https://t.co/n2EBs9eKuh
A5: Celebrate student achievement by allowing students to teach peers as "experts"
I've had more luck with the physical stickers than digital ones, too. Something about the tangibleness.
A5) Give them room and the feedback they want (XP or other) to grow and maintain motivation.
Good to get them moving and thinking. These are experiences they will remember.
I need to learn how to do this!
Digital badges need to be worked into a system where they build on each other to have real value to S's.
Gave Ss physical badges 4 tech competency, on wall, then created sheet w/ them at yr end, they loved it
Isn’t the main reason to by a laptop to cover it with stickers? ;D
And are also better for older students.
A5: I use long strips of paper as "sashes" for achievmt stickrs. My jrs & srs liked it. Gonna hang them from ceiling this yr
Sorry everyone. Haven't seen my wife in a week. GTG
You mean there's other stuff you can do with a laptop? https://t.co/fC0wSvYhRE
Isn’t the main reason to by a laptop to cover it with stickers? ;D
Reward them for humble behaviors rather than just winning the game
Love this, too. spoke yesterday about rewarding those soft skills! https://t.co/i0zbWFwd0U
Reward them for humble behaviors rather than just winning the game
that will be a cool class display will want to see that!
Have a great week, Mitch!
A5: Their badges could be loops added to paper chains. They can be hung from the ceiling. Everyone sees their growth.
Yes, I agree tangible treasure motivates more so than XP. Stickers, lollipops, GCs, junk food work w/Ss https://t.co/jg2MfYK3jI
I've had more luck with the physical stickers than digital ones, too. Something about the tangibleness.
pretty sure. How else do you warm you lap in the winter? :P
I'll take a pic of it once we start :) Using the new Google Street app...so stoked Devin taught me that at ISTE!
Q6: Q6: What’s one thing you’ll take from tonight’s chat and implement next year?
A6: This would make for a great discussion at a faculty meeting/professional development day.
Love this. Where to place badges and show off is a dilemma in conservative districts https://t.co/TrYlrUxvi8
A5: I use long strips of paper as "sashes" for achievmt stickrs. My jrs & srs liked it. Gonna hang them from ceiling this yr
does that let you put things on street view?!?!
A6: Making sure I find a way to incorporate something for the killer/griefer types. Hadn't realized I was missing that aspect
Q6 the strips of paper with stickers!
A6: Work on more socializing quests & opportunities. Maybe a Padlet wall for classes to backchannel & advise on!
That's an advantage of digital badges...no evidence of who has "more".
A6: Have Ss survey themselves for player styles and use this to help form teams the beginning of the school year
agreed a good way to display student achievement for all to see
A6) Spent part of tonight thinking about which player types I see in my PD/trainings. Interesting to see behaviors of professors.
A6: Building gaming groups based on their type and making games great for all.
It's different than Google Maps Street view. It guides you to take pics of entire room. It's really cool!
Gotta head out to make dinner happy I finally got to join this chat
Another idea I am also going to do. Good for more than just games
Maybe folders or on binders? Or use baseball card holders inside binders?
gonna need to check this out
A6 Different gamer styles. But that's four things :)
Goodness, I love ! Push me into different thoughts—help keep me creating—fun to engage with others! :D
Have a good night ! And thanks for hosting !
Top notch chat, thanks everyone!
Thanks for another great chat that pushes my thinking and gaming possibility in my classroom
I'm going to work on not just implementing games that I personally like, but a wide variety for all students!
Always fun to chat with you and brainstorm and dream new ideas!!
Thanks for all your insight, Ivan! Have a great week!
Very welcome! Have a fantastic week!
