Hi @MEMSPAchat friends! Excited for this chat as a follow up from @rewiredprinK2's presentation at our Region's Principal Support Network. Kate here - millennial - from Mendon! #MEMSPAchat
Q1: For the first time, the percentage of millennials in the workforce surpasses GenX and Boomers. Most of your newly hired teachers are millennials. What successes have they brought to your school and school culture? #MEMSPAchat
A1: Kindness and friendship. They seem to be seeking a place to work that is friendly so they really have a positive impact on the culture of the school. And they fight to make their work place a positive work place #MEMSPAchat
Q1: For the first time, the percentage of millennials in the workforce surpasses GenX and Boomers. Most of your newly hired teachers are millennials. What successes have they brought to your school and school culture? #MEMSPAchat
A1: more willing to try new things, step away from textbooks and curriculum to dive into projects and other means of learning. Lots of tech opportunities. #MEMSPAchat
A1: They are tech heavy and have no problems communicating with families. In fact they are some of my best communicators. They have also brought the smile! #MEMSPAchat
Q1: For the first time, the percentage of millennials in the workforce surpasses GenX and Boomers. Most of your newly hired teachers are millennials. What successes have they brought to your school and school culture? #MEMSPAchat
A1: The great news about millennials is that they demand to know their impact, and they desire a clear purpose for their work. That means that leaders need to step it up with a clear vision as well as defined core values. #purpose#vision#culture#MEMSPAchat
Q1: For the first time, the percentage of millennials in the workforce surpasses GenX and Boomers. Most of your newly hired teachers are millennials. What successes have they brought to your school and school culture? #MEMSPAchat
A1 - Millennials tend to be awesome with technology, which increases engagement and that’s never a bad thing! Innovative approaches to today’s challenges. #MEMSPAchat
A1: Trying to "Ignite Passion" is on all of our plates. Make the work place the kind of place you want to work in, but understand your needs are not necessarily everyone's needs. #MEMSPAchat
A1: I think young teachers always bring fresh blood, new ideas, and optimism. I also think that millennials in particular (generally) have a deeper understanding of tech, so if they can learn from and work with more experienced teacher’s all will benefit. #MEMSPAchat
A1) I observe that they are not rigid. They are creative with limited supplies and resources. They are experimental and positive. They are breath of fresh air. #MEMSPAchat
Q1: For the first time, the percentage of millennials in the workforce surpasses GenX and Boomers. Most of your newly hired teachers are millennials. What successes have they brought to your school and school culture? #MEMSPAchat
A2: They seem to work when it works for them...So some of the other staff sees them as "lazy" because they don't see them spending countless hours in the building...But they are working! On a schedule that works for them...I call it balance #MEMSPAchat
A2: I think millennials can be easily excitable (including myself). I absolutely love trying new things, which is good to a point. I have to remind myself to allow things to go through the process before jumping to the next thing. #MEMSPAchat
A2 They want support! Which is awesome and challenging. It has spurred our district to improve our mentoring program and create monthly meetings for new teachers and their mentors. #MEMSPAchat
A2: It is always important to help young teachers become empowered and to lead. It is never easy to lead a team of master teachers, but it is the work of all highly qualified teachers. Our work is to grow their capacity. #MEMSPAchat
A2: I think positive traits also can be a challenge. Can be seen by others as a threat at times. Our job as leaders is to use the positives, level the playing field, and encourage learning and growth within and between all generations. #MEMSPAchat
A2: Like all new teachers it is making sure they have all the tools they need to be successful with all of the new curriculum and training we have in place.
And then making them feel overwhelmed. #MEMSPAchat
A2: trying to contain that zest and enthusiasm and making it sustainable throughout the year and beyond. Don’t do too much too soon. Small things done well over time will make a big impact. #MEMSPAchat
A2) with a strong seasoned staff I have noticed they don’t want to rock the boat. Often staying quiet with ideas and observations. As SI leader, I have to ensure opportunity for balanced participation. #MEMSPAchat
A2: our team has wrapped their arms around our new and young teachers to provide support; culture win! a challenge might be to get them to speak up when tradition and seniority might quiet their voice #MEMSPAchat
A2: Being an educator involves so much more than teaching content today & depending on their teacher prep program they are at varying degrees of competence of handling it all. Differentiating support is the biggest challenge #MEMSPAchat
Welp, favorite hour is cut short... The Daddy Daughter Dance crew just came home... I'll be reading and responding after my Dancing Queens go down! Enjoy the chat friends!! #MEMSPAchat
Q1: For the first time, the percentage of millennials in the workforce surpasses GenX and Boomers. Most of your newly hired teachers are millennials. What successes have they brought to your school and school culture? #MEMSPAchat
A2: I see them having to navigate how to be a leader in a sea of Gen Xers and Boomers. The need support and encourage from behind the scenes v#memspachat
A3: Giving millennial teachers some autonomy with specific goals has proven to empower them to rise to the occasion. They're all about relationships & trust... aren't we all? #MEMSPAchat
That is also a personality trait that I share Matthew! I value people who can pull the reins and help me finish something before I take on the next new idea! #MEMSPAchat
A1. I think Millennials bring a new perspective. A way of connecting with today’s students that teachers from other generations might struggle with. I appreciate the creative problem solving and thinking outside thee box. #MEMSPAchat
A3: consistent feedback, coaching time, identify key traits to use as positives and building blocks, start small with tasks and build from there #MEMSPAchat
A3: I try to offer simple opportunities to lead and help them build capacity so not to overwhelm. Then around year three I start talking about major leadership positions in the building. Try to provide support and be there so their voices are heard #MEMSPAchat
We must focus on their strengths... they are the most tech savvy/connected generation. They are multitaskers. We must use their strengths to benefit all staff and meet their needs for recognition. #MEMSPAchat
A3: Get to know teachers & their strengths and encourage them to continue to take risks - even if others are doubting them. It can be very difficult, but millennials need to know that we value their contribution and we all can learn from them. #MEMSPAchat
A3: I’d like to think that a variety of leadership options are made available to offer choice. Trying to lead with clarity so that purpose is made clear is another. It can be tough though. #MEMSPAchat
A3 - As a millennial I try to stretch myself with new challenges which has helped me grow and expand. Now within a leadership role I try to support younger staff in doing the same. Sometimes they need some gentle encouragement to make the impact they’re capable of. #MEMSPAchat
A3: I have offered to have them involved from day one. I asked them their passions and then try to work into their day. They love feedback. I try to provide as much as possible. #MEMSPAchat
A3: I think this goes for anyone in your building (not just millennials), but you need to identify their strengths and put them in a position to utilize those strengths to help others. #MEMSPAchat
A3: Try to always say YES to new ideas. Also, try to get younger teachers (as well as veteran teachers) to lead PD & staff meetings to showcase their areas of expertise. #MEMSPAchat
A3. Be thoughtful and strategic as you set up teams and committees. Set up a mentor that will have a supporting and meanful relationship. Provide plenty of feedback. Identify their strengths and give them leadership opportunities to highlight strengths. #memspachat
A3: we hired well and now don’t get in their way. I get excited everyday at our school as our team members share ideas and put them into action #MEMSPAchat
A3: Get to know teachers & their strengths and encourage them to continue to take risks - even if others are doubting them. It can be very difficult, but millennials need to know that we value their contribution and we all can learn from them. #MEMSPAchat
Q3: I try to find a place and purpose for all staff! We make committees and try to get everyone on a team of interest so they feel empowered to lead and grow our building. My staff is so amazing and always take off with new innovative ideas!#mortonchat#MEMSPAchat
A3: Providing building level leadership opportunities based on their passions, choice in PD for personalization, interaction through Twitter, and showing gratitude for their efforts. Making sure they know they are an integral part of the team. #MEMSPAchat
A3: Saying yes to their innovative ideas then supporting their sharing of experiences with others. There has been to much dampening in past generations! i.e. Five Monkeys Experiment https://t.co/xcL7HhnNt9#MEMSPAchat
Q4: A 2016 Deloitte survey on millennials in the workplace show that 66% expect to leave the organization they are working for by 2020. What are you or your school district doing to recruit and retain new millennial teachers? #MEMSPAchat
Completely agree. As I’m learning more about what it means to be a leader I’m realizing that not just millennials need a coach more than a boss. Everyone is empowered when coached up! #MEMSPAchat
Q4: A 2016 Deloitte survey on millennials in the workplace show that 66% expect to leave the organization they are working for by 2020. What are you or your school district doing to recruit and retain new millennial teachers? #MEMSPAchat
A4: continuously seeking feedback, finding out why they may leave and building strong bonds. Offer opportunities for them to grow and be a part of the school/district/team #MEMSPAchat
A4: Feed their passions and get them into leadership roles. Also build a work environment that is built on trust, relationships, support, and encouraging of risk -taking. Make your school a place they love! #MEMSPAchat
We must WORK to retain our millennials. They will (literally) run the world and soon. Support, encourage, and promote. Every district office should have at least one millennial voice at the executive cabinet level. If not, we are failing. #MEMSPAchat
A4 In every interview, millennial candidates ask how they will be supported. Our district is listening by improving the mentor program I mentioned earlier. Also trying to create connections between them and their coworkers beyond the walls of the school. #MEMSPAchat
A4: Providing them a blend of support and autonomy to unleash their passions and help them see as well as feel the benefits of our awesome profession #MEMSPAchat
A4: I think the single best thing you can do to retain any good employee is to focus on culture. It should be positive, upbeat, supportive, and innovative. #MEMSPAchat
Q4: A 2016 Deloitte survey on millennials in the workplace show that 66% expect to leave the organization they are working for by 2020. What are you or your school district doing to recruit and retain new millennial teachers? #MEMSPAchat
A4: As a low funded district, I often feel all we can do is make the workplace hard to walk away from!! A strong team, great kids and some of the best and most supportive parents are certainly commodities in this business! #MEMSPAchat
Q4: A 2016 Deloitte survey on millennials in the workplace show that 66% expect to leave the organization they are working for by 2020. What are you or your school district doing to recruit and retain new millennial teachers? #MEMSPAchat
A4. I think it’s important that they always feel challenged, have purpose in their work, and that the school climate and culture is positive and enjoyable. #memspachat
A4: providing quality mentor assignments and activities, ongoing new teacher professional development (and choice and voice in that PD) and a positive school culture helps #MEMSPAchat
I feel a bit awkward answering this q being a millennial & all. So I'm going to say what I appreciate in my leaders: feeling truly supported, collaborative spaces, receiving constructive feedback, & given space to explore ideas w/passion and wise words of guidance. #MEMSPAchat
A4: This struggle is REAL. We can connect and provide feedback, but our relationships HAVE to empower them to know that they are an asset to the organization. We need to do more to retain these fantastic educators. #MEMSPAchat
Q4: A 2016 Deloitte survey on millennials in the workplace show that 66% expect to leave the organization they are working for by 2020. What are you or your school district doing to recruit and retain new millennial teachers? #MEMSPAchat
A4: Mentoring opportunities, getting millennials connected within the community of fellow millennials, and always asking how I can support them best. I'm eager to use @rewiredprinK2's on boarding tools in the future. #MEMSPAchat

A4 - Providing support and encouragement is critical. If they feel burned out and unappreciated they’ll seek greener pastures. Make work fun and rewarding while identifying the positives. Give them a reason to stay by building relationships and unity. #MEMSPAchat
A4: Staying active on social media, providing leadership opportunities, seeking their input and feedback, being a learning organization, and a focus on developing a positive culture. #MEMSPAchat

A5: Find their strong traits and find ways to offer opportunity based around those skills. Give the feedback that has positive and growth opportunities. #MEMSPAchat
A4: Creating an environment where they feel supported, challenged in their growth, and given the tools to be successful. If we are loyal to people then people will be loyal to us. True story. #memspachat
Millennials want to know you care about them as workers, you will listen to them, you will coach them, and provide growth opportunities that revolve around their strengths. #MEMSPAchat
Hi all! I define #Gentelligence as leveraging generational differences as an opportunity in your organization, rather than a threat...I love that @rewiredprinK2 is a fan! What do you all think of the idea of Gentelligence? #MEMSPAchat
A5: Create a culture where opportunities to lead are a part of the landscape. Support and feedback are added to the recipe whenever possible. #MEMSPAchat
Q5: According to the Deloitte survey, more than 63% of respondents felt their leadership skills are not being fully developed. What are you doing to develop leadership skills in YOUR new millennial teachers? #MEMSPAchat
A4: We strive to support and encourage our Ts to make the best decision for themselves - empowering them so that hopefully that is with us; trusting the process #memspachat
A5: Connect, encourage, and support. As a millennial myself, I need the encouragement and support just as much as I need the connections I have with my colleagues in my PLN. #MEMSPA#MEMSPAchat#lmcohort9
Q5: According to the Deloitte survey, more than 63% of respondents felt their leadership skills are not being fully developed. What are you doing to develop leadership skills in YOUR new millennial teachers? #MEMSPAchat
A5: Providing leadership opportunities, giving feedback, asking how I can be a support, creating collaborative structures, choice in PD, getting to know their interests, and publicly praising their leadership. #MEMSPAchat
A5: Developing leadership skills in millennial goes beyond listening. It requires action. Action that is measurable. Action that is meaningful. Action that allows them to take risks and be CELEBRATED! #MEMSPAchat
A5: Begin sharing responsibility as soon as possible- lead this week’s PLC, share a strategy at a faculty meeting, start a club for students, come to parent teacher organization and share what they are doing, etc... have to build their personal self-efficacy! #MEMSPAchat
A5: Offer them plenty of opportunities to join leadership teams and put good coaches in front of them. I seek out their input and help ensure their voice is heard. Give them props when their leadership goes well. #MEMSPAchat
A5: when they open their room for Instructional Rounds, it happens. They inspire other Ts and then those Ts go to them to learn a new technique, strategy, tech tool etc. #MEMSPAchat
A5 - The Saginaw ISD has a Leadership Academy each year (starts next week) where attendees can learn about the journey that other leaders have taken to get to where they are. Offering insight, guidance and encouragement to take those next steps in their careers. #MEMSPAchat
A5: Are we even helping to determine what their leadership strengths are? Let's start with determining how they can and are going to add value and the go from there. What is their competitive advantage to move our building/district forward? #memspachat
A5: one question we ask when interviewing is “what are you passionate about?” We encourage them to take that passion (not necessarily Ed related) and turn it into a contribution to the school #memspachat
We must WORK to retain our millennials. They will (literally) run the world and soon. Support, encourage, and promote. Every district office should have at least one millennial voice at the executive cabinet level. If not, we are failing. #MEMSPAchat

Hi #MEMSPAchat
A5: we developed a course with @WesternMichU and wrote a grant for 10 teachers to take the 3 credit teacher leadership class entirely free! Win-Win for all
Keeping fresh our passion for this legacy work that blesses us each day as we change lives of children is so important! Thanks for what you do Greg! #MEMSPAchat
A5 - I also try to identify staff members who have a real skill or passion and provide them opportunities to flex that muscle. Sometimes being viewed as an “expert” on a specific topic can really bring out their inner leadership skills. #MEMSPAchat
A6: Greet Ts every morning. Build rapport by showing you care. I lead through strategies I would want them to do/use with Ss to build culture and community. #MEMSPAchat
A6: Model it and bring that passion and positivity to work everyday. Show people they matter with actions and words. Your decisions and actions will show that you put children first. #MEMSPAchat
A5: We help school leaders and staff learn and use mindfulness strategies for themselves not just their students. Self-care and focus on what really matter is a big step in the right direction. #MEMSPAchat
A6: Lead by example. Putting kids first is job #1! Work with those who don't recognize your vision. Don't give up. Staying the course is what kids deserve!! #MEMSPAchat
Q6: According to the Deloitte survey, the values that support long-term success are people treatment, ethics, and customer focus. How have you created a culture that puts children first, treating ALL with respect, with a focus on trust and integrity? #MEMSPAchat
A6: We work hard to create an "adult culture" that models, values, and appreciates the work and we do for OUR kids.
Through MTSS, our PRIDE expectations, and our monthly character traits, we challenge ourselves and our students.

A6: We need to model what we expect and keep our focus on students. Respect & trust among the adults in the building will flow to respect & trust among the students. #MEMSPAchat
A6: LIVE IT! I feel like teachers know what to expect from me and know that I'm going to (while sometimes challenging the status quo) do what's best for ALL students. Anytime that's in question, I think of @CraigMcCalla24's message: "ALL means ALL"! #MEMSPAchat
Q6: According to the Deloitte survey, the values that support long-term success are people treatment, ethics, and customer focus. How have you created a culture that puts children first, treating ALL with respect, with a focus on trust and integrity? #MEMSPAchat
People treatment, ethics, and customer focus (students/parents). Yes, yes, & yes. Sign me up. Imagine that, how we treat people mattters. Should not accept less. will not stand for “but he/she knows education” #WeAllDo#LeadingFromTheHeart#MEMSPAchat
Yes! And we have to know, question, and challenge our staff in their "expert" space! As leaders, we need to create and frame these opportunities.
#MEMSPAchat
A6: Understanding the human condition, and using that understanding to connect with anyone and everyone who walks through your doors. Remember we are in the business of building people, not academic robots. #MEMSPAchat
A6: Be a rock - choose the kids first...when they have a mis-step, be there to support the student - model the same with your staff - when they have a mis-step, be there to support the staff #MEMSPAchat
A6: In our building we have a social justice committee and our PBIS committee. Both groups focus on inclusivity for ALL adults and students. This is seen in our assemblies, texts, classroom conversations and images in our halls. #MEMSPAchat
A6) When you can walk down the hallway interacting with teachers and students that you greet by name, you model that PEOPLE come first. Take the time to know your people. #MEMSPAchat
A6: Student led-future focused, student of the month, building expectations (respectful, responsible, and kinder than necessary), being honest, having difficult conversations in private, publicly praising efforts, and showing gratitude. Model integrity & kindness. #MEMSPAchat
A6: take care of my teachers who will then take care of our students 💓 kids first idea with all decision making and focus, but fill teacher buckets too #MEMSPAchat
A5: We help school leaders and staff learn and use mindfulness strategies for themselves not just their students. Self-care and focus on what really matter is a big step in the right direction. #MEMSPAchat
