#personalizedPD chat. A fast-paced, fun chat to discuss personalized professional development for educators. We discuss what it is, why it's better than traditional PD, how to create personalized PD opportunities, how to scale it from individuals to districts, and how to inspire it from individuals to districts to want more and more of it. Hosted each week by Jason Bretzmann @jbretzmann and Kenny Bosch @KennyBosch and moderated each week by a guest moderator. 8pm Central each Tuesday.
Thank you for joining us tonight for #personalizedPD
Please welcome our guest moderator and rock star educator in my district, Drew Volkmann, @Mr_Volkmann
Thank you for leading the #personalizedPD chat!
Join us tonight at 8 PM Central for the #personalizedPD chat! Here is a sneak peek of the questions to get your brain thinking... @jbretzmann@kennybosch
Hello! I am Kenny Bosch, co-host and co-author of the #personalizedPD book https://t.co/UKHXahPlrl
Thank you for joining us tonight.
Take a minute and invite some friends to join us.
Q1: Teachers are always looking for the best, new resource. What’s the latest and greatest resource you have used this year to get your students to talk and/or share their thinking? #personalizedPD
So I guess it helps if I have the right hashtag in my tweetdeck, as I sit and wonder where #personalizedpd was, oops, I am late because was waiting for Personalizepd
A1: I love @Desmos! Such a great tool for students to show their thinking with mathematical concepts. However, the platform is open enough to be used in other content areas as well! #personalizedpd

A1) Well.. we have a PD day on Friday, and we are using our new #personalizedPD cards! Excited to see what our teachers come up with regarding students sharing their thinking.
A1: @flipgrid is definitely the shiniest tech tool I've seen utilized this year for student voice. My favorite old-reliable is Turn and Talk and structured conversations! @OrtizTeach4ELL#personalizedPD

A1 over the last year, definitely @Flipgrid but also using @edmodo because of our #PBL and then connecting with other classrooms, Ss ask questions, share experiences, #personalizedpd

A2 Ss are gathering their info and sharing how it helped them to learn in a more authentic way, and to connect w/other Ss, diff cultures and perspectives #personalizedpd

A1 Also a huge fan of @Flipgrid. I've used other apps like Shadow Puppet Edu that records voice to allow students to do the same thing. #personalizedpd
Talked to a T today who said her student asked where else the work would be published other than @Seesaw-today's kids want an authentic audience! #personalizedPD
A3 First you need to show them WHY they need to learn. Show them at a young age the science of synapses being formed. Show growth mindset. Have them view their learning like a character "leveling up" in skills in a video game. #PersonalizedPD
A2 I have had teachers use @flipgrid to do book talks, provide instructional videos to other students in math, reflect on their thinking in science #personalizedpd
A3 Procedures that are established and practiced, allow students to have voice and choice, teach them how to recognize a failure, find the learning in it, and adjust their course #personalizedpd
It's time for the #Lurker shout out!
We love our lurkers at #personalizedPD
Congratulations on your recent certification! We would love to hear your thoughts when you are ready. Join in, or not, it's cool.
A4 Basic tools to start. Ss use their cell phones to take pictures of the assignment list for the week. They lose notebooks, never lose their phone. Some Ss text the picture to their parents. Others use Google Calendar. #personalizedPD
A4 I share a list of tech tools that students could use. They can add to the list if they find a tool that they think is useful. They are in charge of their choices.
#personalizedPD
We have a class website with "helpful sites," trying to push students to find their own resources and tools. But I agree @Mr_JSpike that we need to slow down and practice, practice, practice #personalizedPD
Glad to hear that, Mandy! Many parents like the idea and both of them can check the picture at any time and know what we are working on.
#personalizedPD
I agree and do the same. I have found that I can suggest all I want that they make videos but until I forced it in an earlier project, they never made them. Now they know how and some of them choose to continue to make videos.

Q5: How can we design (and modify existing) activities that will allow students opportunities to show that they can apply what they learn in personalized ways? #personalizedPD
Yes, GClass is great for that. I also use @Socrative for assessments (artist formerly known as test and quizzes) and Ss will take them from home when they are sick.
#personalizedPD
A5 Don't ask students to all turn in the same end product. Give them autonomy to demonstrate learning in unique and relevant ways. Ideally with an authentic audience beyond just the teacher. #PersonalizedPD
A5: @learnLAP by @PaulSolarz is a great resource for this. Often, if we give kids the objective, they will show mastery in ways we didn't expect! #personalizedPD
A5 Establish a classroom environment of academic risk takers. After projects are completed, I review them and write MVP (Must View Projects) on the board and praise those Ss took risks, tried new tech & applied their learning.
#personalizedPD
A5: thinking outside the box. Have Ss demonstrate their learning. These Ss applied what they knew about physical features using playdoh #personalizedPD
Have students identify experts in the field of their project who can be a resource.
Then... have those same experts help assess the end product they create to show their mastery. #PersonalizedPD
A5 I feel like my theme tonight in my chats is #pbl :) but that is a definite way for Ss to have authentic, personalized experiences, and also by encouraging them to explore, be curious in learning, take risks, #personalizedpd
Once Ss see that you get on the classroom whiteboard for taking risks more of them want to do the same.
I think this next chapter I will ask the Ss to "nominate" people to be MVPs? Maybe this will encourage even more of them to look at the work of others?

I've been using wakelet to curate different current events articles on different topics so I have articles available for students to choose from when we focusing on that topic. Great #edtech tool #personalizedPD Thanks Randall.

A6: I've struggled with my latest math units. Ss can move at their own speed, but some of my high fliers go so much faster than others and always want "more!" #personalizedPD#help
A6 Have students identify what they need assistance with before individualized meetings. Have them be Proactive instead of Reactive when you have 1:1 time with them. #PersonalizedPD
I saw a fantastic PBL poster at ISTE, Ss in grades 3, 4, 5 worked together to make bracelets and crafts, sell them and then use funds for different organizations #personalizedpd
Always thought that those who excel can take their learning 2 the next level by helping those that struggle. Nothing proves you understand something than if you can teach it to others. Have high flyers create their own problems & have other high flyers solve them? #personalizedPD

A6: I think that’s the beauty of mastery learning. You can have Ss working independently while you side bar with others who need more instruction. Gifted Ss can self manage if you give them that opportunity or peer tutor. #personalizedPD
That's when transfer and problem solving really come into play! They can create and redefine the basic skills and you don't have to design it- they'll do it themselves!
#personalizedPD
Yes, that too. I thought of having my own award show at the end of the year, but haven't put it into motion.
Bosch Awards: Best Video, Most Amazing Use of Tech, Best Content, and so on.
#personalizedPD
Ss should be able to keep going then. Have them take tests when ready. Then let them move on to the next lesson. Is their a higher level for them? My son excels at 3rd grade spelling, then I give him 4th and 5th grade spelling quizzes at home. #personalizedPD
A7: making that effort to commit myself to #personalizedPD by staying connected on twitter and keeping my eyes open for new opportunities to learn. Psyching myself up to take on challenges that are scary usually causes the most learning.

A7 I set aside time each week on Wednesday to either find new tech tools or explore the list of tech tools I have. I enjoy doing it, I have to make time for it or it doesn't happen.

#personalizedPD We would love to hear about the books you are reading during "Book Tasting" on Saturday, February 3rd at 9:00 AM EST during #BookCampPD chat. Please join us! @teresagross625
A7: If you need a different type of professional growth, try curating your weekly #personalizedpd tweets and submit them for grad credit! https://t.co/SeoAL0H92G
