Ryan Miller, Instructional Technology Coach in Prosper, TX here for #fearlessedchat
The last book I read was "Are you Smart Enough to Work for Google" by @WPoundstone
Phil from Northern Virginia. I teach 6/7 US History I&II and am the founder of #waledchat (Thurs @ 9pm) and #Edusations (Youtube). Finished Mortal Engines a couple weeks ago, and have since moved onto the sequel. Great series, pumped for the movie! #fearlessedchat
I admit. I was a cry for help. I just needed some fries! Help me, people! Oh, and last book? I finished #Culturize. I have a few others in progress. #fearlessedchat

A1: Books not only carry a sentimental meaning to me, but that they are an anthropological tie to human history. To hold a book - - is to feel the care and attention that numerous people put into it - it is a human connection - not just a collection of words. #fearlessedchat
Hey everyone! My name is Chris and I'm a former nuclear operator/instructor that now does elect panics engineering in upstate NY.
Last book I finished was 12 Years a Slave, currently reading College Unbound by @jselingo. #FearlessEdChat
Books connect us to the....I was going to say past, but really its the world. Even if I read that book on an Ipad I am still transported to another time/place/reality. It allows us to view other perspectives from the safety of our own homes. #fearlessedchat
A1: There are studies that support the importance of paper books. I think reading books also teaches patience as you explore each word. It also creates areas for imagination, something needed for innovation and creativity! #fearlessedchat
A1 I can't even describe how much I love the smell of new books and how emotionally attached I feel toward books! I hope my S's learn to feel the same with at least one book. I think that learning how to blend physical books and tech is the best of both worlds #FearlessEdChat
A1: The best books are mirrors and windows. We are reading Fever 1793 by @halseanderson, and it's amazing the connections that students make! #fearlessedchat
A1: Books can create a reality that no one has thought of before. Characters come alive in our heads not just on screens and backpacks. All things in balance. That’s why it’s called tech integration and not just tech. #fearlessedchat
I love the smell of books! (Libraries are my happy place!) But I like your idea that blending is best. I love seeing kids pop out books on tablets any time, anywhere. #fearlessedchat
A2: We always make it part of our kiddos bedtime routine. A book or 2 or 3 before bed. I also know parents that (if their kids can stomach it) have them read a story out loud in the car. You can do Round Robbin reading at the dinner table too :-) #fearlessedchat
A1. Tech is awesome but can never replace books. There’s so much out there and not everything is digital. There’s something about turning the pages that is satisfying! #fearlessedchat
A1 I interpret this Q as "What is the importance of reading?" Many ways we 'read' - a website, fiction book vs nonfiction, poetry, article, graphic novel or comic book, magazine. I love feel of books personally & can't read a lot online. I don't absorb it the same #fearlessedchat
A2: Find the classic tales that they loved growing up and encourage them to share them with their kiddos. My parents read the Chronicles of Narnia series to us every night. They loved them and wanted to share them with us. #fearlessedchat
A1 anticipation of checkin a bk out & then to hold it & snuggle w it. Def a diff feeling than our tech devices we continually hold in our hands. Also, environmental print isn't backed w LED tech lighting, so our eyes should be in books too to see regular print #fearlessedchat
A2: Most nights, our daughter (in 6th) will read to her roommate (in 4th). A little Harry Potter, with all the voices and accents! I sit outside their room and enjoy the story. #fearlessedchat
A1. Technology can fail. Books do not. The power can go out as well but with a good flashlight you can still enjoy your book. There is something about having a work of art in which we can learn from or be entertained by unfold in our hands. Keep the books! #FearlessEdChat
A1: Books are a child's first introduction to the idea that words have meaning. I'm not sure how that is changing in our increasingly tech based world, but there is nothing like being able to pick up a book and disappear into it- No push notifications to interrupt #FearlessEdChat
A2: I always says that if you read during commercial breaks (instead of fast forwarding the tv) you can get to 20 minutes pretty easily. Also, choose books you actually like! #fearlessedchat
A1: Books keep us human. They engage so much of our brain an emotions without the need for overstimulation or extravagance.
It's a weird, quirky thing for me where reading a book relaxes me in a way not much else can. #FearlessEdChat
A2 I Parents could start by talking about books THEY read or have read in the past in a casual way, like meal times or in the car. I also think modeling reading is important. I remember my parents reading before bed most nights with us past childhood board books #FearlessEdChat
A2. Bedtime!! My husband and I read to our 1 year old every night before bed. It’s our down time together that sets the mood for night night time #fearlessedchat
12 Years a Slave is fantastic! Turns out, I live in the area Solomon Northrup spent most of his free life. Right in my backyard.
I'm just getting into College Unbound, but so far so good. #FearlessEdChat
A2 Reading should be a part of their bedtime routine but some parents work evenings. They could record themselves reading a bedtime story to their child 😀📚 #fearlessedchat
I always share the graphic. And I challenge the students using #EpicReaderpillar or the Pizza Hut Book It or the Tower of Books Challenge. #fearlessedchat
A3: I LOOOOOOVE @burgessdave Teach Like A Pirate (#tlap for those in the know) It is the one book I always come back to, dog ear page after page, and use as much as possible. It has become my standard for best practices and still inspires to this day #fearlessedchat
A1: Books can create a reality that no one has thought of before. Characters come alive in our heads not just on screens and backpacks. All things in balance. That’s why it’s called tech integration and not just tech. #fearlessedchat
A3: Has to be #tlap by @burgessdave! Helped me realize that I am creative! Creativity is not just who can color or draw best, it is about the mindset and grit you go into designing incredible opportunities for our Ss when they walk through our doors! #fearlessedchat
A2: Definitely agree with keeping a book in the car for on the go. We make it part of our bedtime routine.
We get upstairs and in room 30 minutes before lights out so we can all read. Sometimes we read to the kids and sometimes they read. #FearlessEdChat
A2 Find something that your family truly loves! Read with diff family members. Connect to the authors. One of my colleagues even invited kids to record themselves reading and sent to school. Their friends loved the personal connections! #fearlessedchat
A3: I'm sure it's going to be a popular response, but #tlap! It really reminded me that sometimes you need to take a risk and step outside your comfort zone if you want to create the best learning experience for your students #FearlessEdChat
A3: #BoldSchool by @Wes_Kieschnick My aha was we don’t need to reinvent the wheel and change everything but with little tweaks our instruction can have a greater impact for Ss #fearlessedchat
I love the Reading Strategies book by @JSerravallo At the time I got it I was in no place for research and in need of some action! It fit just right and I can now use it as a reference for when I get stuck. I am looking forward to her Writing Strategies one.#fearlessedchat
A1. Technology can fail. Books do not. The power can go out as well but with a good flashlight you can still enjoy your book. There is something about having a work of art in which we can learn from or be entertained by unfold in our hands. Keep the books! #FearlessEdChat
A3: I go back to The Book Whisperer by @donalynbooks and Deeper Reading by @KellyGToGo. They stick to the simple principles that get lost in the hustle and bustle of the school year: kids need time to read. #fearlessedchat
A3 I learn much & varying things from many books. Loved @chrisemdin For White Folks Who Teach In The Hood, great strategies & insight to building relationships & giving S vice. Currently reading The Power of Moments, love reminder to be intentional in things/ppl #fearlessedchat
A1. Technology can fail. Books do not. The power can go out as well but with a good flashlight you can still enjoy your book. There is something about having a work of art in which we can learn from or be entertained by unfold in our hands. Keep the books! #FearlessEdChat
A3: I love @WBTWednesdays / Whole Brain Teaching for Challenging Kids because it was my first step to mini lessons and engagement strategies. The longer you talk, the more students you lose! #fearlessedchat
That's a great reminder! I've been facing idea overload this year. I want to do it all, but I can't do it all. (And my lessons suffer when I try to do it all!) #fearlessedchat
A3. Teach Like a Pirate! The best part is that you should have Passion and Enthusiasm in your daily routine. If you’re passionate and excited about what you are teaching, that energy is contagious, making your audience want to learn! #tlap#piratepln#fearlessedchat
A4: HARRY POTTER by @JKRowlingss - I will recommend this until I am blue in the face. K-12 and beyond. It has action, LOVE, family, sacrifice, life lessons, magic, and some pretty fun words to sound out. Yes, I am a fan, but I am also an advocate...always ;-) #fearlessedchat
A4: I just finished Code of Honor by @AlanGratz. So much action! I couldn't put it down. I think I ended up book talking it daily! I'm hoping some of my 7th graders will give it a try. #fearlessedchat
A4 love reading aloud The Skin You Live In to my #kinders Also love @MoWillems Piggie & Elephant books. Oh my so many great books out there. I could list a ton #fearlessedchat
A4: I teach high school math so I don't get a ton of kids asking me specifically but I always tell them to find something of interest to them, and if all else fails I recommend John Green because I loved him when I was their age! #FearlessEdChat
A4. I was a HS history teacher before an ITC and my favorite book was The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. Great book to engage kids in history and government. #fearlessedchat
A4 I have 6th graders so anything Rick Riordan, J.K. Rowling, Suzanne Collins, Ally Condie, Kwame Alexander, Alan Gratz, Mike Lupica, Dan Gutman, Carl Hiassen, James Patterson, James Dashner, and the Who is?/What was? series #fearlessedchat
A4: I also often recommend The Truth about Forever by @sarahdessen for middle schoolers. That book speaks to my hear when it comes to love, family, friends, and forever! #fearlessedchat
A3 My favorite professional book is "Learning for Real" written by Dr. Heidi Mills. She brilliantly enables teachers to see how they can live into inquiry-based teaching. The gorgeous foreward by Lucy Calkins was so powerful, too. #fearlessedchat
A4- Elementary- Elephant and Piggie by Mo Willems for hesitant readers, Ricky Ricotta by Dav Pilkney for "I can't read chapter" Ss who really are ready but lack confidence, Ella Enchanted for Ss who need a challenge b/c LOVE that book and can totally convince them #fearlessedchat
A4: I recommend Harry Potter @jk_rowling for the S's who need a book friend, Matched @allycondie for the ones who need a non-movie dystopia, Ender's Game @orsonscottcard for the deep thinker, and Red Queen for s's who want a fierce female character #FearlessEdChat
A4: Will always recommend Harry Potter. After my 5th grade T destroyed my love of reading by ripping up a BookIt coupon in front of me (I read big books instead of short books, but not "enough" books), my 6th grade T used these books to reignite my love! #fearlessedchat
A4: Current go to for kids is "I Am Peace" by @susanverde . It's about mindfulness and dealing with emotions.
I'd call it a K-adult book. It's that good. #FearlessEdChat
I wish I could have John Green novels in my 6th grade library but the kids are not ready for that mature content yet. We do watch John & Hank's Crash Course vids too in social studies (and I met them both last year!) #fearlessedchat

A4: Anything by Roald Dahl. The characters. Their voices. So much cutting humor. The adults always lose and the kids get the wins! What more can the underdog hope for? #fearlessedchat
A3. If we are talking PD book I love anything Eric Jensen writes about teaching students from poverty. One title comes to mind, Engaging Students With Poverty in Mind. This is a book that all teachers in any school can benefit from. #FearlessEdChat
Thank you so much #Fearlessedchat for an amazing chat! You are the best in the biz! See you on September 19th for our next chat! We will dive into the world of PBL :-)
A4: When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead. (5th grade through You’re-never-too-old-to-read-this-book) Also my 6th grade sports lovers always get a recommendation to check out any Tim Green book. #fearlessedchat
Understanding How We Learn
Using strategies from cognitive psychology to increase retention of material. Fantastic read. Highly recommend. #fearlessedchat
My youngest used to be have #BookTube channel where she reviewed books and did literature challenges - has no time to make videos anymore...and we went to VidCon and met John & Hank. We also went to #YallWest and met a ton of authors! #fearlessedchat

A4. Never taught this book but read it with my boys at home. It’s from a local MI author and he dropped it off at our school to try. The Alligator Man, by Scott Bosek. The book deals with judging people without knowing who they truly are. Quick read. Upper El. #FearlessEdChat
The characters were like 18 instead of 11 and 12, Asher was a villain, etc...totally off... I was angry watching it. #fearlessedchat I always like the book better than any movie.
A4 My favorite first day read-aloud is "Tom Goes to Kindergarten." Perfect for all of us. Even nonreaders can join in a bit! Close 2nd is Helen Lester's "Hooway for Wodney Wat." #fearlessedchat
#TheGiver plot is emulated is so many dystopian novels that were authored after... the kids love making those text to text connections. #FearlessEdChat
I had no clue what it was.... my kid needed me to a)pay for tix & 2)drive her. We ended up having a great time tho. I learned about #BookTube on @YouTube & love way 'kids today' connect online about great books! It was clear that reading is alive & well #fearlessedchat#122edchat
