From a Student Teacher: Teachers, where are your go-to sources for research as you are planning instruction?
Looking for a replacement for Bitstripsforschools Testing Pixton right now but curious about other options.

I think authentic learning is applying knowledge and class material in real-life contexts and situations

Connected current events (Burkini debate, voter ID, black lives matter protest) to Enlightenment. What would philosophes do?
Thanks Shawn welcome to Why is authentic learn so rare in curriculum?
Do you see many instances of AL in your school?
Participating in my first
AUTHENTIC LEARNING makes so much sense, why so rare?
WHAT THE HECK IS AUTHENTIC LEARNING, and why should it matter?

I'm looking to develop a qtr long unit centered around philosophy for AP Lang. Any ideas? Mix of fiction & non.

I think districts still heavily rely on publishers for curriculum.Hard to put AL experiences in a textbook, IMO
Authentic learning should eliminate, or at least reduce the number of times kids will ask, "what do we need to know this stuff for?"
following the curriculum too rigidly takes away from authentic learning moments that students present
Authentic learning is using real life situations to motivate a student to learn.
Exactly! As support T, I often struggle with that very question (and it's always a valid point) https://t.co/ddVC8nefNA

Stay tuned Mojo the little green monster is ready to teach your kiddos all about empathy ... https://t.co/7Gs1UnKAfj
I define authentic learning as learning from real life examples.
Truth/Right/Correct = Always Reacting to everything Good & Bad
You'd think--but it's a fair question pretty much always for the mortal among us. (But you know this already. =) )
to the information they're receiving.
Authentic learning engages students simply because they see it matters
Welcome Phoenix... do you use AL approach? How's it going?
yep... rigidity can hinder authentic learning.
IF AUTHENTIC LEARNING has real problems, inquiry, discourse, project work THEN WHAT DOES OTHER LEARNING have?
Authentic learning guides students in the creation of products relevant to real-world needs and challenges.
A1 Making learning meaningful through real-life situations and contexts. We often present them abstract and removed.
Authentic learning should be relevant to our Ss lives outside of the classroom. Adjust content to reflect our 21st century world
Educators are models for digital citizenship. We cannot ignore our own during political times.
Not yet! Following now! :)
Examples of great talks to share with students? National Speaking Week wants to feature them! Send to https://t.co/fharBZQTyd
Agreed. Further, it is tough to "test" this type of curriculum in a MC EOY test. https://t.co/yHGRLVSWvI
I think districts still heavily rely on publishers for curriculum.Hard to put AL experiences in a textbook, IMO
thanks ... so how do you make that happen? Is it difficult?
it's connecting to them and their sphere
I do; especially, when it comes to science as that is where I see the most real-world connection happening
Authentic is patterned learning! Other learning is incidental?
Yes! How will politicians know we've taught if no test? https://t.co/E4TTGOyWTj

So Makenzie Curious, do your science students get out of the classroom? Perhaps to gather data?
Authentic learning occurs when students are allowed to research and draw conclusions/form opinions on topics
Hey he's a good edpeep to
Letting students direct their own learning when possible adding open-ended inquiry. It's always challenging.
How much would Authentic learning depend on the amount of voice that students have in their own learning?
Want to learn how to bring SEL to your school? Apply for the 2017 Summer Institute for Educators https://t.co/k350uq1cyd
Thanks Christa... as you lead authentic learning how much structure do you provide to students?

Yes, science and tech are easier for AL. My problem, expl necessity of "reading weather fronts on a map" to 4th gr Ss.
AL is any learning exp that enables learner 2 flourish & grow, learning should be around rich experiences & social interac
AUTHENTIC learning involves students creating tangible, useful products... what are examples of such products?
Authentic learning matters to the kids ...
game changer for my son. Thank you. I'm thinking to put it on all my computers at school!
A1 Solving complex problem that could be REAL solution can be addictive. Success breeds confidence. Authentic Learning does that
having a voice in their own learning provides more motivation and investment which naturally leads to authentic learning
tomwhitby: How much would Authentic learning depend on the amount of voice that students have in their own learning?
I have 45-50 min segments with each gr. Have not gathered data....like the idea...wheels turning

Pleased to be talking at Parents Victoria today. To achieve significant change, parents will need to play a large part in lighting the fire.
student voice and agency essential for AL, interdependence, democratic learning environments
AUTHENTIC LEARNING occurs in real-life contexts and situations...do these include classrooms?
well When Ss have no voice in what/how they learn then what's authentic abt that?
I think Ss need much more "voice" in their learning for AL. Ss have little to none in elementary
I agree, when students feel their voice matter they're more willing to express their ideas and create freely
As much as I prefer Ss voice, in AL it can come in the product phase. Ts can design project and then turn them loose
I'm just an education student in undergrad now, but I'll give students an idea of what to expect day-to-day
I think they definitely can happen, especially if students have the freedom to wonder and explore regularly
If you can't tell your kids why they are learning what they are learning beyond "it's my standards" then why are you teaching it?
Giving students more voice in what they are learning allows them to make their own authentic learning experiences
Therein lies the problem. Back to publishers and textbooks...
it can be. if it involves metacognition or student relevancy,
hey How do you sequence authentic learning over multiple class periods? if so how to maintain ss focus?
Yes but not bound by the walls of the classroom or the competence of individuals or teacher, collaborative… https://t.co/RkNr5AkmBL
AUTHENTIC LEARNING occurs in real-life contexts and situations...do these include classrooms?
It can. T can bring in real-life problems for Ss to work on
(Such as a 1 to 2 hr. schedule) Would any more planning than that would be too much for younger students?
Authentic learning needs to be organic and driven by student interests. Authenticity is lost the moment Ts tell Ss what to learn
I recommend this book that explains origin and elaboration of standardized, authentic, democratic citizenship ed. Etc
I think authentic learning is play. The question becomes how do we create learning environments that invite play?
is needed we have to create opportunities to use it ... more than yes/no questions
yes challenging... in my experience requires me to 'be prepared'... what about your experience?
A question I have asked myself. Again, as support, I help build Ss vocab and schema for upcoming sci and ss content
Nice! Curious, so Christa what percent of your instruction/teaching involves authentic learning?
Tricky to do. Got to find that hook that keeps them wanting more
HEY PLAN, do yourself a favor these edPeeps ->
Add the arts, add engineering, allow for choice, gamify, let them lead.
Agreed! Let students experiment- give them the tools to discover knowledge for themselves! The key? Make it relatable
I agree! Ss get more out of the learning experience when they have choices https://t.co/osTBetUYf4
Authentic learning needs to be organic and driven by student interests. Authenticity is lost the moment Ts tell Ss what to learn
Yes, we have to be prepared to let go in many respects. Effective facilitating is an art.
what is play to some is work to others
keen insight... what percentage of your instruction/teaching is 'authentic learning'
Student voice encourages engagement and ownership of learning. https://t.co/Fyb4t5Mron
Giving students more voice in what they are learning allows them to make their own authentic learning experiences
Ah-ha moments are the hook for my Ss. They love sharing what they learned on their own
Is AP really worth it? Teacher or student perspective. Any input appreciated
Architectures of 6+ classes per day and cultural focus on specific learner outcomes/ standards make them inauthentic
*ahem* "Play IS children's work", BS&MS in Early Childhood Ed teacher. Too bad it's no longer seen that way
a sad reality... how'd we get in this state of affairs?
I agree, trying to control the outcome only eliminates AL for Ss.
very little. Spending next 2(!) wks administering interim tests all day
Education in the Apple Orchard, a daily harvest of teaching and learning shared by ADE's, is now available. https://t.co/KvNL1A2mdD
well then, do ss seek out primary sources?
ahhh, Shawn don't feel low... you can do this!
One word: politicians. Another word: scapegoats
That would be hard to do until we have a common definition
I am getting great ideas on how to add more AL experiences. Just need time w/my Ss to implement
We started with a Google map view and looked at current land use vs. 1950's. Connects to field trip next week
I provide my student choice, but my Ss often feel lost because they've never been given the chance to choose what to learn before
Do many admins promote it? Seriously asking, as I see them feeling pressure for standards-based instruction
wonderful... relevant, multiple skills.. i'd like to be in your classroom!
tomwhitby: That would be hard to do until we have a common definition pr20906
this is one of the hardest parts about implementing AL. Ss only want to know what to do and what the correct answer is
I provide student choice, but my Ss often feel lost because they've never been given the chance to choose what to learn before
Looking and sounding good kiddos!
with the increase in state mandated testing "play" has become the new four letter word ... taboo
Authentic learning is relevant, student centered. We need to find more ways to engage ss with passion & purpose.
how many times must we hear 'need more time' before someone hears our call for help?
IDK. Authentic ed language corrupted with standardized ed associations. Lack of Ministry imagination and will.
Yes! It's hard to convince Ss that what they want to learn is valuable and learning is about more than a right answer
I teach in a private school and our admin does, we have a lot of freedom with how we teach content
I need more time teaching my students, less time testing my students. Don't think it's too much to ask
You are so right, and it is so ridiculous
Authentic learning teaches students to understand the importance of their role in society.
I'm in a public school, so nowhere near that amount of freedom
If Learning isn't connected to a emotional value is it truly authentic in value?
It is definitely an uncomfortable transition, but I do think they get better at it the more they are exposed to it
Makes so much sense... How did things get so messed up?
I think if we show enthusiasm for the content and the students that can help bridge the gap
https://t.co/ZOKBBySnzr
Please share! Curious how Ts will answer this: When I give a "retake" assessment, I usually...
Somewhere along the way, educators were no longer in charge of education.
What if your GPA is far below Ivy Ready Standards? 2 options: calibrate school selection or apply as a transfer
as well as share the different answers/perspectives/outcomes so show there isn't just 1 answer
We need to be careful the classroom teacher does not become a vessel to be used by educators climbing the educational leadership 🌲
Hmmm...you've got me thinking...
Here's what drives teachers to create personalized learning environments in their classrooms https://t.co/JH1xCtwSUR
You are there! You are it!
a sad turn for the worse...
I think we can promote AL by encouraging good problem solving process, not just good results
So frustrated that my Ss are seen as nothing more than numbers on a piece of paper.

Hey PLN!?
Do you know anyone who needs help from Hurricane Matthew?
Willing to help?!
Drop a line to or DM me!
Thanks to for moderating this and thanks to all who participated.
So true! Especially for Ss who always want the "right" answer and don't want to take chances.
THANK YOU for participating in about 'authentic learning'. I learned lots from you tonight. Big shoutout to co/mod
gave my friend's just 3 hours' warning time.
I have so much love for education activists everywhere! Thank you for all that you do!
tomwhitby: Thanks to ShiftParadigm for moderating this and thanks to all who participated.
Thanks for a great topic! I'm more motivated to find (make) time to allow for AL in my classroom.
Thank you, and for moderating tonight's . Have some ideas for change in my classroom!
