Ed Jones, Canton area. Daily Rethinking high school with far, far more student choice.
calling it early! Be safe! And of course, welcome to the chat!
A1: yes! One is an option the other is a supported argument for change!
A1 Ss can choose to do something, but Ss voice demonstrates unique thought and creative VOICE.
A1: There can be: S choice can be options, decisions Ss make. S voice can be Ss expressing questions, concerns.
She is back! Glad to have you here again, Maggie!
A1. Choice = what they do. Voice = giving their input and feedback
A1: student choice: allowing Ss to have a say in rules, procedures, process. Student voice: Ss provide concerns and questions.
Bobby - social studies, Gahanna Lincoln HS (Dover high grad )
hey Garry! Thanks for being here!
Scott Jones, fifth-grade, Hilliard
A1-Sure-It's not just about creating a bunch of options for kids to choose from-
A1: S choice means T provides the options. S voice is all S.
A1: I see choice as a way to involve Ss creativity, let them decide direction of learning & voice as Ss giving input to guide
A1: To me voice implies listening and choice leads to decision making.
A1 choice implies options.voice implies debate a higher form of critical thinking
A1-Voice means students have input and Choice means they choose the path they take on the journey
Interesting interpretation-I went straight to composition : )
how did I miss question 1? I don't see it
welcome back Ryan. My week is a roller coaster. You?
A1: Choice demonstrates an action. Voice is thoughts. Choice is a commitment- temporary or permanent
WoopWoop! Appreciate the invite
": A1-Voice means students have input and Choice means they choose the path they take on the journey "
A1). Student choice allows for student voice.
RT
Q1: Is there a difference between student choice and student voice? If so what?
A1 - student choice = empowering at a higher level. Student voice - participation.
A1: Ss choice is tied to learning outcomes. Ss voice should be woven throughout the entire learning process.
A1: I don't believe there is a difference. All based on their ideas & choices, with Voice being how it is expressed
A1: Choice is the option to choose, voice is opinion and ideas
You got it- snow, delays, sick kids. Stable weather is a hope
A1: S-CHOICE depends on what options Ts provide. S-VOICE depends on their personality and passion for learning.
sorry, Brian. I was working to get that back up.
A1: Both are important but student voice can help form relationships with students when you must listen. Choice can just be action
This makes sense. https://t.co/nfOaJ0f7Yx
A1: I don't believe there is a difference. All based on their ideas & choices, with Voice being how it is expressed
A1 choice - what they do or don't do / voice - how they demonstrate the result of their choice.
A1: Choice is a decision or option to decide, voice is expressing an opinion. Voice is important to develop choice.
A1 Choice are your options; voice is the mechanism to advocate for them.
A1: Voice is about contributing to the clsrm culture of learning. Choice is about Ss choosing learning path towards mastery.
I think you can have choice without voice-but I don't think choice is powerful without voice
A1: Student choice allows for Student voice. https://t.co/cRRdBDmjBD
Q1: Is there a difference between student choice and student voice? If so what?
Hello, Jen from FL! A1 Choice, empowering Ss to take ownership of learning & voice =respecting & allowing Ss to share perpectives
Well put. https://t.co/xAxANFjeA7
I think you can have choice without voice-but I don't think choice is powerful without voice
A1) Different or not, Ss benefit from both. Ts are giving chance for Ss to learn & grow
Yes! Ts should provide choice based on voice, i.e. know your students!
Q2: Why is Student Choice important?
A1) One comes from a menu of opportunities and the other is the opportunity to be vocal about the menu https://t.co/jMss9uILAn
Q1: Is there a difference between student choice and student voice? If so what?
Both can be changed easily by peers and other outside influences
Student choice allows kids to have ownership which in turns gives them a voice
I think Ts may have some hand in student choice, but it's Ts job to get the Ss to use their voice.
A2: Autonomy. I find giving them freedom to make choices abt their lrng breeds autonomy & promotes hope.
A2: Choice allows Ss take an active role in their education and puts them on the path of becoming life-long learners :)
A2 - Keeps Ss engaged, interested, and can make learning fun for each Ss. Also allows Ts to learn from Ss.
Student choice gives students power and enhances culture to make them know they are valued
A2: Best student learning involves ownership. Ownership increases with choice.
A2. Choice - Reduces boredom. Increases engagement. Recognizes differences in learning styles.Respects interests.
welcome, Jenifer! Hop on in to !
A1 In real life, (hopefully) no one chooses for you. Ss need to know how to pick what they are passionate about and run w/it.
A2 Choice is important because personalization has become an nonnegotiable part of the 21st c. student.
it increases interest which increases engagement
A2: Student choice allows for student voice--the opp for the St to assume ownership for his/her learning https://t.co/sieU2OYDqy
Q2: Why is Student Choice important?
A2: We are working with the rest of their lives. We are facilitators. Their choices should help us with how we provide directions
A2: It is important because we don't want them to HATE school.
A2: Student choice is very powerful for increasing engagement.
A2-b/c life is about choices Ts need to help students problem solve and persevere once they make a choice
A1: BAM! Getting the S's to voice HOW they show mastery. Not just giving them a menu of choices. https://t.co/sYJAyLOPoQ
Hello, Jen from FL! A1 Choice, empowering Ss to take ownership of learning & voice =respecting & allowing Ss to share perpectives
Agreed, personalization is becoming a cornerstone for effectively reaching your Ss.
I love that autonomy leads to hope. Could be a t-shirt!
A2 SC gives Ss options to demonstrate their learning. Important if we desire our Ss to engage in dif modalities
A2: Gives students the opportunity to explore things which they value while also showing their mastery of skills
A2 - it's their learning, they need to know they matter - allow them to fail, grow, and succeed on their decisions.
A1:used to do a US Hist project w/S choice. I picked time per, platform. Result=garbage most often! Kids had no voice in learning
A2: Choice is a powerful word. The extra time it takes to embed Ss choice into instructional plan pays off in high quality Ss work
A2 choice involves selection which helps Ss feel empowered & a stakeholder in their education Promotes ownership
A2: How often in life do you have absolutly no say in what you do?
A2: student choice allows for Ss to have an active role in the classroom, develop accountability.
Student choice and voice enhances collaboration which helps them grow to be successful in the real world
A2: For too long Ss have been puppets at the controls of the T. Choice can lead to metacognition, an awareness of ones own lrng.
A2: Student choice is important because not everyone learns the same way. Being fair and equal are not the same.
A2: Even when Ss have the choice of WHEN they do something, it increases the chances they will do it
A2: Student choice is a natural step towards student engagement.
A2-we must be clear about what we mean when we say choice--not choose which worksheet you want to do-choice must have purpose
A2) Many reasons: Love and Logic research. Student buy-in and some autonomy. Opportunity to test S thinking & evaluate choices.
Yes! Ownership is key to having Ss be self-motivated and driven to learn.
A1- Yes, a Ss choice is still choices the T usually gives, a Ss voice is how they feel & the ability to give their opinions.
A2: Choice increases engagement and keeps students invested in their education. Investment leads to a big payoff!
A2: choice gives Ss options, ability to explore passions & own their learning.
A2: it gives them a sense of control and comfort. They will do more and be more engaged if they choose when and what to work on.
Students having voice and choice gives them ability to be creative and extend mastery beyond traditional means
A2 providing choice not just in the process of learning but to demonstrate understanding is also important
A2: S choice is important because it allows Ss to take ownership. More of a buy in for them.
Along with specific feedback to Ss when they demonstrate learning aligned with their choice
A1: Appreciating the word "menu" as we discuss choice/voice. Have to have just that under each of those. https://t.co/xQsI1G5O9g
A1) One comes from a menu of opportunities and the other is the opportunity to be vocal about the menu https://t.co/jMss9uILAn
Q1: Is there a difference between student choice and student voice? If so what?
who do I follow to see questions ?
A2: Student choice shifts the ownership of learning to the learner. Choice gives Ss different paths to demonstrate progress.
A2) It engages the whole being - it removes the stress of maintaning a hierarchy in the classroom https://t.co/ddk1Jeh3TI
Q2: Why is Student Choice important?
Autonomy is different than buy in though right?
Such a great observation! Especially for our "hate school" Ss. Real choice leads to real life.
Teachers hate it when they have no say and the principal makes all the decisions. Kids feel same way.
I believe we have to teach Ss how to make the right choices for themselves & how they learn best- feedback& reflection!
Yes, they need to feel that they can have some control over their educ. & activities. https://t.co/tmvDeDgoSC
A2: it gives them a sense of control and comfort. They will do more and be more engaged if they choose when and what to work on.
"If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice." -Geddy Lee(Rush)
A2: Choice brings ownership. Ownership brings the illusive intrinsic motivation that is essential to Ss deep understanding
welcome! Must have missed you sneaking in to
This enhances the relationship
Right, Jodie, which often leads to increased effort from the S
A2 Student choice is only way all schools will evolve to where they should be in coming years.
I'm moving slow tonight! Lol
I agree choice leads to voice.
Boom. RT : Teachers hate it when they have no say and the principal makes all the decisions. Kids feel same way.
I am here, - bring it on!
And when we create the choices are they really choices? I think not-instead we need to create opportunity https://t.co/481qp86fTt
If so what?
Like this line of connection here. We know that one our main tasks is to build intrinsic motivation.
I think autonomy is HUGE. I do my best when I feel autonomous.
Great insight on student choice! https://t.co/SSGAaSDrlw
Boom. RT : Teachers hate it when they have no say and the principal makes all the decisions. Kids feel same way.
yes! That's why we need to provide support and systems for them to manage their choices and time effectively.
Betsy, elementary principal here from Nebraska!
Joining late from Massachusetts- hi everyone! Student choice keeps students engaged and personalizes learning!
...and voice contributes to choice, it's a yin and yang relationship :)
Been thnkng a lot abt relatnshp of T-S & Princ-T. Choice/Voice foreign to my Ss but still very foreign to Ts here 2.
Hi Neil, Carol ELA Consultant from Long Island here with .
As a student, I can buy into the philosophy of S choice by being giving the autonomy to make such choices.
Welcome, Betsy! Glad you are here!
A2: student choice helps Ss feel important. Worthy. They are the reason we have jobs. They are pretty important!
A2: SC is essential for retention, engagement, make connections and to answer the question why? or what's in it for me?
Q3: Why is Student Voice important?
welcome to the show Brenda! is on a roll tonight! is moderating.
Great to see you again, Carol!
Exactly! We can scaffold how to make goals and meet them. All great life skills.
Hi Betsy! We are almost ready for Q3
A2-Ss will open up & learn to take risks, this will build confidence & they will be willing to try things in the classroom.
LI represent! I'm originally from Smithtown.
welcome, Betsy! Glad you could drop in to tonight!
I see. It starts with buy-in. Autonomy is the ultimate goal.
Our teachers decided to do an awards breakfast for students before the contract day. Not my idea, but they wanted to do it.
A3: They are the "end user" - it matters what they say!
Thanks Chrys. It's the biggest piece of the puzzle for so many of our kids.
A2: Choice also provides opps for failure! Given T creates activities/forms for Ss to reflect, expose strngths/wkness
A3: Giving Ss choice is key to buy in. Can't expect most Ss to be excited about what Ts care about
A3 Schools were designed to help students evolve. Shouldn't they have some say in their journey?
A3: Student voice gives us insight on what our students need and care about. This helps us make better plans and decisions.
love this! new trend of "learning menus" do they provide illusion of choice? Projects disguised as choice?
Hard to give rationale with the 140! :-) https://t.co/vRdmNhr9F4
I see. It starts with buy-in. Autonomy is the ultimate goal.
A3: Important to hear what Ss are thinking, wanting, needing, feeling. w/o S voice, I cannot be as effective.
A2 Ss take ownership of their learning. Ss feel more like they are part of the process & they are.
A3 - voice should make Ss feel a part of THEIR class. Keeps Ss engaged & easy way for Ts to measure/gauge understanding.
A3: Student Voice means nothing if teachers don't listen.
A3: student voice allows the Ts to understand what the Ss want. We are there to serve them. We need to know how to reach them.
A3 - how else do we know who they are and what they are about? It's the only thing that matters on education.
Hi Carol!!! Lake Erie finally has ice on it - getting ready to capture some pic of winter
A3: Real learning happens students are in charge of their own learning!
Exactly! It's so odd that we spend so much time/effort planning to reach Ss without involving them in the process.
. all choices are mistakes....until they work.
A3. If I don't hear what is important, confusing, special, or interesting to my Ss, how do I really connect with them?
A3: S voice is important because if weren't not listening to them, we're not growing!
A3- Everyone needs a voice. If you want to motivate Ss to learn & try they need to feel they can show what they know their way.
A3 student voice gives Ss an opportunity to construct an opinion and practice discourse
hahaha! Exactly why I am moving slow! We created amazing dynamic grouped PBL embedded blended units today!
A3 It's their avenue to communicate learning needs, demonstrate leadership, and practice social & emotional learning skills
Thanks. Same reason our book choices need updated. The 'Canon' we know doesn't always fly in 2016
A3: student voice helps us differentiate and adjust our practice
A3 student voice for empowerment & engagement
Love learning with you, Brian!
It's cool man. I'm learning tonight.
A3: Voice creates discussions. Makes all parties of wants that may need to be met
A3-Voice is important b/c Ss must learn that their voice matters-they are in charge of their learning-
Own voice=own thoughts=OWNership.
Just had this problem myself! But 140 makes you distill your ideas, too.
A3) Don't we all want to be heard and valued?
Especially in the middle school & high school years when they are feeling out of control in their lives. https://t.co/vz1YHWleri
A3: Real learning happens students are in charge of their own learning!
A3: Ss have a very different perspective, point of view, and expertise than Ts.
Great point, and I love how their voice helps us be better!
yes, agree-working on a presentation on voice-
here. ELA/Speech and Debate teacher GLHS.
A3: we need to teach students how to have and use their voice appropriately. It's important for future communication and success!
excellent point. Or in the case of Urban Meyer vs. Michigan football ~ OWNED
And so we keep reading-to know what latest author the Ss are passionate about. Keeps me young!
A3: voice can be heard many ways in a classroom.crafting of expectations, norms, as well as direction of instruction. All valid
check, please! You're done. Sounds like you have exceeded the daily output. Well done!
Ss Choice takes many forms - product, task, topic, collaborators, behavior, tech tools.
A3: student voice builds confidence, communication, collaboration- all skills greatly needed!
Absolutely! And giving them a voice makes them part of the solution!
A3: We want Ss to become self-driven individuals who pursue their passions--helping them find their VOICE puts them on the path.
A3: Student voice builds student leadership
A3- Advocating for themselves is an important life skill that Ss will need in their adult lives, why not let them learn how now.
Ss want to feel their voice matters across the curriculum.
Yes- I we need to think about the way we solicit student voice- isn't it always by speaking??
even some of the CC index pages...nothing current on them. Those choices can only play for so long
Right, Ryan. It's the discussion that we want with our Ss, so we can engage them in deeper learning.
A3 our students chose Global Scholars Diploma and accepted responsibility for the learning
A3 Capacity must be built in schools to recognize Ss voice.
Q3 listening to s helps us learn about them. The more we know about our students the better we can meet their needs when teaching
A3: It's their school too. Student voice should be valued.
I would like to see it sometime. I know I can improve listening to
A3: Voice helps T get to know their S, helps S feel valued and responsible for the things that happen in the classroom
A3- Choice leads to college & career readiness. Ss learn their passion that they can use to take learning deeper
its soooo much fun but extremely mentally exhausting to do intensely focused planning all day!
Choice can heighten engagement key to learning. Voice changes culture/climate of classrooms and buildings with student ownership.
Lions well represented tonight... must be out for a short 13 mile jog
Agree. Also, Ss should know and demonstrate what this looks like in various settings.
A3) Kids talk abt issues close to thr hearts. If edus listen - they will always know the pulse of the c/r https://t.co/yiVigw4C7l
Q3: Why is Student Voice important?
Absolutely Brian. emerges from active S-centered classrms. A3
A3: Voice doesn't have to = democracy, but can help a T guide learning/environment of classroom so Ss feel opinions validated
I agree - and the more we can put them in situations in the classroom and building level, the better they will be!
Yes! Ts must understand that S voice takes time and effort to form.
A3: we showcase student voice by giving them supervised access to our social media accounts to share their story.
Same goes for T voice.Don't ask if you're unprepared for hard truths&the work it will take to make changes. https://t.co/GA77ZYNX4A
A3: Student Voice means nothing if teachers don't listen.
Things like The 5th Wave by are rigorous and complex. We need to expand the canon.
A3: Silence & Behavior are also Ss voice. It is easy to miss Ss who aren't sure how to express their ideas in traditional ways
Great point https://t.co/fY3bUNee2X
A3: Voice doesn't have to = democracy, but can help a T guide learning/environment of classroom so Ss feel opinions validated
Q4: What are some specific examples of Student Choice that can be used in the classroom?
Doesn't happen overnight. Culture must be fostered in schools to listen to all stakeholders, including Ss.
https://t.co/7ce6Z4QTqU
T's need to respect the Ss voice & not get defensive, as long as Ss can state their case well, why not listen? https://t.co/BKpMTELdbt
Yes! It's nice to hear Ts embracing the power of social media rather than be crippled by the short list of negatives.
love using google forms to hear some anonymous truth!
A3 Ss are the most important part of education. Of course they should have a say. It's important for them to know they count.
Alison Walton from Washington State signing in late!
is strong from those who are striving to be owners of their learning. A3
And other Ss listen because it is 2016 https://t.co/FvUB6YykvQ
A3: we showcase student voice by giving them supervised access to our social media accounts to share their story.
A4 Genius Hour, Literature Circles, Socratic Discussion, Research, all allow for Ss choice in topic if not product.
A4. Choice of assessments to demonstrate mastery.
yes! That's teaching them to be authentic leaders!
A4-choose how to share info w/ audience---choose when to take an assessment--choose to participate in intervention group w/ T...
Also a form of authentic learning and S leadership
Agree but building trust & relationships will also build openness between staff & students.
A3: Simply stated, Aric. And, the truth. Let's offer what we yearn for. https://t.co/A4iRhrGuE5
A3) Don't we all want to be heard and valued?
I've seen teachers in our school give kids multiple pathways to demonstrate mastery of a concept.
A4: Location for learning, partners, assessment choices/ project based learning
A3: When we give students voice we have to be prepared to listen...even if it's not what we want to hear
A4: projects. My seniors break down popular songs as a means of working with rhetoric. Speech choices. Book choices
A3: too often the Student "voice" heard is that of the high performing/hyper involved Ss.We need to find ways to hear WHOLE convo
: Relationships are key. Without them, nothing really can evolve.
A4 - my Ss currently creating a presentation/visual (method of their choice) showing their own family culture, folkways, & mores.
welcome, Alison! Great on a roll!
A4: Big fan of allowing choice of assessment. The T shares the end goal and Ss choose how they want to get there.
Q4. Letting Ss ask their own research questions. Tic Tac Toe
A4: student choice in assessments (art, paper, skit), rules/consequences, groups, seating arrangement. Students have input.
A4: Use a rubric system to help Ss identify the skills they need to develop/master while letting Ss choose task/topic to get there
A4: Choice in my classroom: "Do what I say or go see !"..
A4: Choice of products, process, tech tools, collaboration or not, who partners are.
I wrote a book on it so I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't allow it. 😀
I let my 3rd graders choose authentic to them: when they need a brain break, partners, how they present their reading group book
Have given students voice in creating their own songs for snow day videos along with producing the videos
A4) Let Ss vary the products they use to display their understanding, analytics, and fluency of the topic(s).
A4: Choice of pathway, career, or even activity. All serve as interest builders.
Agree.
Simple, profound and powerful!
Cheers !
https://t.co/ZI0TtrqgtC
A3) Don't we all want to be heard and valued?
…and then Ss get sent right back to class….
Music as poetry is a fav. Will need to think about music as rhetoric-cool thought!
I dig it! This approach sends engagement through the roof!
I'm sure they feel empowered and do not take advantage- this choice makes them feel valued!
Interesting and valid point. My 15 yo feels that way in her classes. Certain Ss dominate.
A4: Text choice is valued. Writing choice to develop written voice. Innovation hour to explore other choice
A4: is high on my list, choice boards, menus, anything that gives Ss chance to tie learning to a passion of their own
A4: Blended learning. Giving students some control over the pace, place, path, or time.
A4: stand/sit, handwrite/type, speak/sing, read/write, alone/together, now/never, hot/cold(lunch), blog/tweet, tables/sheets
it didn't turn out too badly. I would adjust a few things if/when I use it again. But it gave them lots of options
A4 my science Ss choose a venue for communicating conclusions of investigations. Heck, they get 2 choose the investigations 2!
A4- Choice can be Ss to deciding how to show learning- written, verbal, artistic, mult-media. Students decide based on interest
A4: 20Time projects best example of student choice. Ss choose, develop, finalize.
Like the location of learning piece here. Going beyond the routine 4 walls of learning
Yes, you got that right! https://t.co/hBuXfErnjI
A3: When we give students voice we have to be prepared to listen...even if it's not what we want to hear
A4:assignment menu's can engage Ss in areas they feel comfortable w/ & at the same time force them to venture out of comfort zones
My Ts provide task list due over time & have "work days" where Ts facilitate &/or small group while Ss choose list order/options.
Offered a tic-tac-toe style menu as a syllabus for speech class this semester. Ss seem very excited about it. "Choices? Cool!!!"
is an overlooked form of choice! It allows Ss to go at their own pace & review if needed.
Thanks for the invite tonight from my Ohio PLN:
questions are coming from tonight.
A4: Ss need to choose GOALS that mean something to them.
Bingo, yes! Not NASCO though.
And communication is SOOOO important especially today in our world. https://t.co/JxuwItDmR5
A3: we need to teach students how to have and use their voice appropriately. It's important for future communication and success!
very true. Though from my grad school experiences it takes a certain type of student to handle it
Thought you would appreciate this chat! https://t.co/EHIX9VJgXS
is an overlooked form of choice! It allows Ss to go at their own pace & review if needed.
A4 Choice boards, choice of product to show mastery, differentiating content w/S choosing how to learn content.
Yes! Hopefully is won't be so such a novel experience once more Ts incorporate choice regularly.
we appreciated your insight, Brain! Good luck with the pending weather. Stay safe!
A4: best part about choice is seeing the Ss choose to challenge themselves instead of taking the easy way out!
A4 - Clark Hall in Gahanna allows Ss to choose work space too - classroom, desks, tables, spark space, common area, hallway, etc.
"stand/sit" - I am going to have my dad raise a few of my tables for that very reason!
we appreciated your insight, Brian! Good luck with the pending weather. Stay safe!
Yep, Ts need to spend time modeling desired behaviors before giving Ss autonomy w/ .
standing desks have been big in our school this year!
A4: I used Ss grade contracts in my MS/HS classes. Here is 1 of the intro ppt I used for one class - https://t.co/lF6ffDFfU9
My Ss loved to use choice boards & have options as well!
Choice in learning spaces. https://t.co/wQL81YNzHh
A4 - Clark Hall in Gahanna allows Ss to choose work space too - classroom, desks, tables, spark space, common area, hallway, etc.
That's a cool place-the choice of work space is a game changer for kids. https://t.co/rcPARNRAwQ
A4 - Clark Hall in Gahanna allows Ss to choose work space too - classroom, desks, tables, spark space, common area, hallway, etc.
How many people allow kids to just move when they need to?
even then it's like the wake up call in college ~ new routines and more independence present issues
Agreed. Blended learning is a great option but is not a "catch all"
This takes comfort, trust and training!
That rocks! My 4th Ss redesigned our room last year w/principal help! They "surprised" me!
YES. More careful culture building by Ts. We must also walk the walk to talk the talk. https://t.co/xIiy7U1O9S
A4: best part about choice is seeing the Ss choose to challenge themselves instead of taking the easy way out!
Q5: What are some specific examples of Student Voice that can be used in the classroom?
I've considered bringing in beach towels so kids can sit or lay on the floor. Extra laundry at the end of the week, but worth it?
when did you sneak in? Hope you are having a great night, Ellen!
I guess as more Ss are exposed to this kind of Ed from an early age it will become less of a shock.
Love the concept of "SPARK SPACE" I want a spark space!!! What Ss wouldn't like that!
Sometimes one kid's need to move interferes with one kid's need to focus w/o disruptions.
My mentor teacher allows them to "buy" towel passes with the classroom money and they can bring in their own.
Follow for more examples of student choice/voice
Tasks are also varied by levels to continue provide stretch and accessibility within the options https://t.co/SGSmF42bET
My Ts provide task list due over time & have "work days" where Ts facilitate &/or small group while Ss choose list order/options.
A6: In math classes, student-led discussion (small or large group) and problem-solving can be very effective & engaging.
It's important to develop a culture in your classroom of understanding
absolutely. Subject & materials are also huge. I had a couple blended classes that NEEDED face to face
great examples, Tom. Getting students to connect the learning to their passions is key.
Well said.

Loving the specific examples tonight. Keep them coming.

This gets me excited for tomorrow! Just what I need mid-week!
Q5 interest surveys help provide Ss with a way to communicate interests, skills etc & provides the T w/ insight into their Ss
A5- Socratic seminars or visible thinking routines allow student to voice opinions- build accountable talk- strengthen community
A5: S voice in expressing learning styles, means of expression can be huge when it comes to student buy in. Meet in the middle

I love when Ss say, “Mr S, will you unlock the spark space?“ MT : Love the concept of “SPARK SPACE”
A5: Give students the opportunity to provide feedback after a unit. What worked/what didn't?
A5: Look up. When a stdnt approaches u at ur desk, look up. Tough for me as I work at a speed of 10000 mph but I do it!
I need to learn more about this spark space!
Student feedback is so helpful, especially for newer teachers.
FEEDBACK! DING, DING, DING! https://t.co/d5oUVcnUkv
A5: Give students the opportunity to provide feedback after a unit. What worked/what didn't?
and a Digital Principal for 2016 along with 's
so tuff! Factor in interest & motivation. HS is problematic given EoC tests. Our BLT will look at this
aren't usually through speaking! But applaud you on wanting to hear Ss voices anyway you can!
A5: my program is all Alt.Instr. Ss voice guides all instruction and is constantly changing, even if Ss don't realize it
Gotta run on the early side tonight, . Thx to for a great chat!
A5: Student LEadership and Student Service committee are both operated by student voices and students acting upon voice
A4 Allow Ss to work on hands on projects & when they hit a glitch or have a ? then they find the answers. They lead the learning.

A5 - Ss Voice: let’s take a field trip to OSU. Let’s Skype w/another class. Let’s do a project instead of a test. Done all this.

Cavs game is over. Ian to bed. I'm out! Thanks
This is such a fantastic idea! I bet your students love it. I wonder how it could be modified for the elementary level?
We started these this year - great tool! https://t.co/QfcpTzslJb
A5- Number talks in math allows Ss to share various ways to solve problems.
A5 - My class is allowed to move, change seats, stand up, use art , tech, & any tool to learn. Not rows of silence!
A5: Ss would groan as a lesson began, I would ask "how can I cover "x,y & z"? Try to let them have some say. Lost them if not!
My kids came home and did a number talk with me. It was great.
Exactly! Better yet, why wait until after unit is over. Student feedback can be powerful during learning as well.
take a prof. day and come for a visit! What do you teach? could set it up. Clark Hall is amazing!
I love number talks! The students are engaged, share their methods, and learn from each other.
I want to see Clark hall too! I've heard great things!
A5 We buddy with lower school ss to learn the value of teaching others, we model learning, we explore different classrooms.
A5: Daily 5 is a good structure to help with student choice.
A5: I feel a silent classroom means very little learning is going on. Student voice shows S learning! Active classrooms for me!
A5 surveys to get to know them. Not to just assess what they don't know.
Have you played with Ss or engage in the twitter tasks?
No. Please tell me about it!

https://t.co/NMuygz2pDI
A5: Daily 5 is a good structure to help with student choice.

gotta run. Enjoyed my first chat. Thanks all. Gnight!
agreed! when we rely on speaking, we lose so many students!
We're ending a little early tonight. Thanks everyone for a great chat. I learned a lot tonight.
Classes meet on Skype or GHO and each choose a number. They ask questions to guess the number.
A3- In traditional speech classes, too many students are easily evaluated on inherent skills learned from home rather than growth
that sounds awesome! I may have to look into that if not for student teaching but for my own classroom!
A5: "Coverage"mindset in lesson planning doesn't leave a lot of room for Ss choice. "Teach to mastery" can be centered on choice
When you really watch & listen to your Ss you see &hear learning happen. I facilitate, not dictate!
Well you can follow and connect with classes to solve word problems.
Choice leads to voice to ownership of learning A3

It was the tonight. Thanks for putting off your bedtime.
Student voice and choice enhanced in PBL and experiential learning. Give students reallife problems to solve and bring in experts
