#elemchat Archive
Inspired by the brilliantly successful, powerful learning and collaboration opportunity that is the weekly #edchat, #elemchat was created to provide elementary (or primary) school educators with a venue for discussing issues and strategies that are specific to teaching in their context.

Trying to join the live chat a 6pm
-
I'm here for the live chat as well !
-
-
-
this is my first live chat and not sure if I am doing this correctly
-
-
is anyone participating in this chat tonight.
-
I was wondering the same thing!
-
Is there a specific moderator? Or a topic anyone is really into right now?
-
-
is 3 trend in classroom management and discipline the discussion topic??
-
WHAT CAN ALICE teach us about educational technology? Read: Through The Looking Glass of Learning https://t.co/O4maWWxM9E
-
Are we just sharing topics or is there a specific topic tonight?
-
It looks as though the normal moderator, Dorie is not here. I like Nancy and Mark's posts.
-
Thank you Mark, that was a great post! I also liked the info you shared Nancy!
-
quickly glanced at the 2 trends one, and noticed that the future of discipline includes selfmonitoring of behaviors. My dream too
-
Referring to 3 trends, as a behavior tch children are often asked to monitor their behavior in checklist form, it is so powerful.
-
Is anyone here in special education and if so do you think you would have to change the way you monitor the behavior?
-
Agree! Powerful if you take the time to teach them how!
-
young I am in sp.ed. as well. In what way?
-
Im in sp. ed and having students recognize their behavior is one of the 1st things necessary to helping them and u build a plan
-
@ Gina, do you think the students in special ed could self-monitor their progess?
-
Yes and building the plan with the student is uber effective!
-
Yes! If you 1st teach them to be more self aware, I like to start with checklists
-
@ Rachel, that is what I believe and I just wanted to make sure and have someone tell me it works, not just in theory
-
with everything else in sped, it's individualized lol...some can, some can't-some will with the right scaffolding!
-
is correct. Kids like to be part of their plan and see it work.
-
-
-
-
, of course, it depends on the student, and their ability. I want to focus more on their abilities than disabilities
-
Your students are lucky to have you in their corner. Spoken by a real compassionate sped teacher!
-
Love it! Wish more people thought like you!
-
, this is wonderful news..everyone tries to talk you out of going into special ed as if it is neg thing!
-
Love the idea of checklists for students to monitor their own behavior
-
Definitely the most challenging job I've ever had! Glad you weren't "swayed!"
-
and Gina, thank you so much! My heart really is in the right place and I hope to make a difference! You must be!
-
Sped ROCKS! When you find a plan that works for kids and have them be 100% part of the twerking it to fit, you will see results!
-
Twerking! If only it were THAT fun!
-
and Rachel, you have to make it fun and change it up...that way it is FUN for the students
-
Going back to Wong and Canter's ideals is great, but like said some kids will/won't. Accountability is great for behaviors.
-
Assertive Discipline? Just googled, wann learn more now. Highlights?
-
, yes I do...I would like some highlights on assertive discipline
-
Assertive D. Simple, Clear Rules and Consequences. Proven to work. Great Starting point for a discipline program.
-
No more then 5 rules with clear consequences. Discussed and understood by all students. Accountability. Kids understand +/- consq.
-
It forces teacher to be positive and get rid of negative language, instd of saying, "don't" you give options.
-
@ Rachel Thanks gal! You've got me researching over here ;)
-
That sounds like the students would accept that better. Being simple would be easier to follow and be accountable for
-
Also, a favorite of mine is a mix of Canter and Faye's Love and Logic. Which focuses on giving choices within reason.
-
Schools I work with are currently using 7 Habits and Responsive Classroom at the moment...and having much success
-
I have a question that is totally off topic-just wanted to know which seating arrangements works best and if you have "home desks"
-
I like 7 habits, but haven't used much responsive classroom. I'll check it out. What do you like about it?
-
I guess it is important to know if you have a resource classroom or inclusive and rachel
-
Just wanted to ask before the hour was up so you can finish w/ your topic if you like (sorry)
-
-
. I have a RR, and I dont have assigned seats, kids can sit wherever they like. All of my kiddos come from gen ed.
-
@ rachel gathering time allowing all students to share/listen. One focus is on social/emotional growth-important for kids today
-
, thanks! that sounds great...no mundane routine :)
-
@ rachel seems very similar to A.d.
-
@ carrie @ rachel- thanks for the impromptu chat girls! I'll be following you ;)
-
@ rachel and @ gina thank you for all of the information and the fun chat :) I will be following you both too
