Hey #whatisschool ... I am Dennis ... making memories at a STEAM school in Florida ... 3 inspirers (because they know their tech not just because they are women) @TG_Neil@alicekeeler@DrKatrinaKeene
A1: I think the biggest change is seeing the amount of women involved in the development of the tools. Not just the delivery. Shout out to @ThePracticalEdu for stepping behind the scenes.
#whatisschool
A1: Over the past 5 years it has been so exciting to see more women in #EdTech sharing their stories in (1) blog posts, (2) live events, (3) webinars, you name it! #whatisschool
Hi everyone. Justine from Auckland, New Zealand. PhD student studying Gifted Ed. Passionate about STEAM. Had a class of 10-13 year-olds who designed and rebuilt a c’room into a Makerspace in 2015 using Design Thinking. #whatisschool
A1 I have met so many women over the past few year who are leading the way in #edtech and #education, learning from them and inspired to keep pushing for change, #whatisschool

Based on statistics we have a long way to go to get equal representation to our male counterparts but it is getting better. I only know of 2 tech directors that are women but the coach number is growing #whatisschool
A1: While there are still substantial gaps between men and women in edtech when it comes to presence, pay, and title, I am encouraged by organizations like @CoSN who in the last 5 years have really put a spotlight on these gaps and worked to raise awareness. #whatisschool
RT ClassTechTips: A1: Over the past 5 years it has been so exciting to see more women in #EdTech sharing their stories in (1) blog posts, (2) live events, (3) webinars, you name it! #whatisschool
A1: Women are emerging as leaders from the trenches and have been claiming (rightfully) positions of power in the #EdTech realm. Great, but more needs to be done, its a good start! #whatisschool
A1: I remember being at an #edtech leaders dinner at a conference with @ProfeEdTech about 7 years ago---we were THE ONLY women! Wow, have times changed! #whatisschool
A1: In our district we have a group of @PZInnovators and #edtech lovers who are all women. It is empowering to know that we all are strong women who are making gains in this field! #whatisschool@womeninedtech
A1. Women in education has changed from being expected to be the ones educating and caring for to being the ones shaking this up and changing the perspective on teaching, no more empty vessel but actually thinking about the actual child thinks

RT ClassTechTips "A1: Over the past 5 years it has been so exciting to see more women in #EdTech sharing their stories in (1) blog posts, (2) live events, (3) webinars, you name it! #whatisschool"
A1: It has been truly inspiring to see more women in varios edtech roles these past 5 years from Startups to CTOs. The different prespectives they have offered have made a profound impact on the education system! #whatisschool
A1) even though tech is a buzzword for longtime, edtech has changed a lot over the last 10 years and of course providing more opportunities for women. Women in edtech -exponentially increased and similar trends predicted #whatisschool
Jenelle, you are absolutely right! A long way to go. We are only now putting down the foundations of what can become the road to equal representation #whatisschool
A1: Over the past several years I have noticed younger women who are new to teaching and taking on leadership roles to share their passionate about how tech can improve education for the students. #whatisschool
Q1: Joining late - This is Barbara from Oakland, CA - In the last 5 years, social media has changed how we share and learn from each other about #edtech and women in education are awesome!!! #whatisschool
Amazing experience. Girls were more passionate about the project than the boys who had to be pushed a little. This is a copy of the blog they wrote - mostly all their own writing and a record of what they did. The photos tell the story too. https://t.co/ob64RmUf6V#whatisschool
RT SimpleK12: RT ClassTechTips: A1: Over the past 5 years it has been so exciting to see more women in #EdTech sharing their stories in (1) blog posts, (2) live events, (3) webinars, you name it! #whatisschool
I have some amazing students who have been going to #edtech conferences and presenting, leading the sessions, teaching the Ts and other Ss, it is awesome to see #whatisschool
Yes! I know personally I have made so many wonderful connections and new collaborative #edtech opportunities because of platforms like @Twitter#Whatisschool
A1: I’m inspired by the amount of women leading the way in what was once a male dominated profession! @ThePracticalEdu visited my class this year & my Ss were excited to see a female “scientist”! #whatisschool
When I think about the last five years in #edtech many of my influential interactions have been from women ... i don't really think about it from a gender perspective ... @RafranzDavis is a wise educator ... does gender make her knowledge any different? #whatisschool
Agreed. It's interesting because our technology magnet is 90% women... kind of cool to see the kids coming to us for all of their technology needs #whatisschool
A2: Some barriers are women not having a voice at the table. Some say the best ideas happen over a beer or on the green. How can we create the space to be more inclusive?
#whatisschool
#whatisschool Lifelong learning outside four-walled classrooms that takes you around the globe to experience as many places, cultures, philosophies, people, religions, and adventures as you possibly can before you die.
A2. I have heard a lot about how there are aren't enough women going into coding, therefore we have women trailblazers in the field of #edtech but we don't have enough women designing the actual programs.
#whatisschool
A2: Seeing more women in edtech coach roles, but there are still gaps in representation in leadership positions. Additionally, when you compare men & women tech leaders, @cosn leadership survey shows that even women’s titles are lower when doing the same job as men #whatisschool
A2: As with most leadership positions in schools, they tend to be "boys clubs" I think the biggest barrier is breaking up those clubs and showing our strong voices and ideas. #whatisschool#womeninedtech
Q1: I think that over the past 5 years women have emerged through not only the digital world but also society as a whole! We still have a long ways to go but progressing..
#Edtech#whatisschool
A2: I had the great opportunity to hear @MisterMinor speak on this recently. His message=that sometimes women (or, any groups) can be excluded really just based on social norms. Encouraged all to think of others outside of social group to be included in projects. #whatisschool
A2. Sometimes it can be self-belief and also not being heard. I've been involved in software development and it was sometimes hard for others not in education to value the input from that side of things - to believe in your background and knowledge. #whatisschool
A2 Some of the barriers are that perhaps women are not given an opportunity to share ideas, to take the lead, or feel as though they cannot speak up, also I think some #edtech requires coding skills and we need more of this in our schools #whatisschool
A1: I think that over the past 5 years women have emerged through not only the digital world but also society as a whole! We still have a long ways to go but progressing..
#Edtech#whatisschool
Q2: also lack of female tech mentors. I’ve been pushing my high school computer science girls to pursue tech in college if they enjoy it. I wish someone would have done that for me since it took a lot longer for me to realize it was something I could do #whatisschool
A1: Agree with @ClassTechTips - exciting to see. I read 30% of edtech founders are women - twice the # in tech overall. And while women-focused VC firms are making a difference. Funding is still a huge obstacle for many. #whatisschool
A2: I think sometimes women tend to be more hesitant to join the edtech world because they haven't been taking seriously in the past! These types of barriers can definitely be overcome though! We just need more female role models in the area! #whatisschool
A2: many district tech divisions are dominantly lead by men, recently I have sat in many IT meetings and realized that there is a need for balance #whatisschool plus I’m playing tech catch up since I come to #edtech from a different perspective
A2: From my experience over "many" years in #edtech, the barriers that still exist are recruitment in IT tends to be in favor of hiring men over women. Also, girls are just starting to be more interested in STEAM & #makerspaces#whatisschool
A1: Over the past several years I have noticed younger women who are new to teaching and taking on leadership roles to share their passionate about how tech can improve education for the students. #whatisschool
I’m trying to change this with my high school course! It’s important to frame courses in ways girls are interested in. Hitting social and global issues that coding could solve #whatisschool
RT ClassTechTips: Rdene915 jessxbo Totally agree! Definitely think skill development in these areas can be included in school with intention #whatisschool
A2: Strong women who make incredible leaders are often characterized as *****y. You know what I’m saying. Societal stereotypes make it difficult for women. Either too quiet and a pushover or too “bossy.” Language we don’t use with men. #whatisschool
A2 exposure and publicity leads too easily to negativity because the social media companies are unable to weed out misogynistic hate speech #whatisschool
RT ClassTechTips "Rdene915 jessxbo Totally agree! Definitely think skill development in these areas can be included in school with intention #whatisschool"
Ugh yes. I feel like I have been hepeated in many of those types of meetings. (read: I will say something, but when a man repeats the exact same thing, suddenly it's a brilliant idea) #whatisschool
A2: It seems that men still currently lead in blogging about #edtech. Most blogs, podcasts, etc. that I have found are created by men. Women still are somewhat of a minority in regards to #edtech sharing. #whatisschool
... not seeing the barriers ... strange I am in an uber conservative area, but our district tech led by a woman ... Superintendent a woman ... network manager a woman ... my peers women #whatisschool
A2: I think some barriers are the preconceived ideas regarding women in #edtech! We need to step up & lead the way! Empower others to believe they are just as capable of men in this field! #whatisschool
A2: There are still barriers that exist between men and women in our society, many people believe men are typically the "Technological ones" which isn't always the case.
#whatisschool#edtech
We have a great balance of girls & boys at our #Makerspace. Same with my coding & Arduino clubs. Very pleased with this balance. My principal & former principal are great role models for girls. #whatisschool
A2) women were always good at many skills for generations ( it is interesting to see that some of these are coming under edtech now!) One example is sewing... I won’t really agree that women are not representing tech..it is the opportunities, lack of recognition #whatisschool
A3: Men can help bridge the gap, empower voices, and appreciate the different thinking that women can bring. Tagging these men who make my voice LOUD! @TampaBaySTEM@HCPSArea2@chatzopoulosn#whatisschool
A2: Barriers to women being leaders in #edtech: norms, who controls the $$, afraid to take risks, and concerns about looking good over doing what they do best. Sometimes we hold ourselves back -Time to change that!! #whatisschool
I found the same when I was teaching - and learning - coding. The girls were often the ones who were the most passionate about it. One of them ended up featured on the Scratch site because of her skills. #whatisschool
A2: Many times women have to go in proving themselves- when often men are already given the respect in #edtech roles. We have made strides despite this! #whatisschool.
A3: If they are in change hire some women! Or to start, listen to them and try their ideas. I’ve been fortunate to have been given my first edtech role by @rbauerkenya who is a great advocate for eqaulity in tech. #whatisschool
A3- they acknowledge the female’s impact, give her space to lead & verbally praise/support them in public. @Deronjwms91 empowered all educators #whatisschool
not really sure how I want to answer this ... first thought is how sexist is it to assume a man has to empower/cede power a woman? We are a team. #whatisschool
A3: We simply need more people supporting other people regardless of of sex, skin color, race, religion. If we can get this right in education we change the world! #whatisschool
A2 In my school it is a lack of believe. We are trying so hard to get girls into the computer science pathways but many young ladies don’t believe it is in their skill set. #whatisschool
A3: I think men should play a role in helping the advancement of women in education as well as #edtech. As long as we have men who are supporting and uplifting women, rather than undermining them, everyone will win! #whatisschool#womeninedtech
A3: If we are to be serious about improving our society and education, the best way to achieve that is by empowering the group that has been marginalized the most throughout the centuries. #whatisschool
A3: I'm pretty sure I've had more women as guests on the @HouseofEdTech than men. So women are sharing their stories in #edtech on the show going on 4+ yrs #whatisschool
A3) while men supporting women is very important and highly required, I believe women supporting other women is equally important. Strong, confident woman are those who support, encourage, uplift and empower other women without the fear of competition #whatisschool
A3. I've been very lucky in that I've often been in charge of IT and then Edtech since I've been teaching - since 1999. Passion for it broke down a lot of barriers. #whatisschool
A3: We simply need more people supporting other people regardless of of sex, skin color, race, religion. If we can get this right in education we change the world! #whatisschool
Men in leadership can ensure that all voices are represented and given air time, encourage role models for students, and foster new leaders in the women on their teams #whatisschool
RT SimpleK12: RT ClassTechTips: Rdene915 jessxbo Totally agree! Definitely think skill development in these areas can be included in school with intention #whatisschool
Great role models and mentors make a huge difference to girls getting into science/tech. I am glad that more women in #EdTech are inspiring girls to pursue #STEM#whatisschool
A3: Learn from and learn with one another. Take a back seat when required. Ask for help when required. Never assume anything…and don’t take over! #whatisschool
A3) while men supporting women is very important and highly required, I believe women supporting other women is equally important. Strong, confident woman are those who support, encourage, uplift and empower other women without the fear of competition #whatisschool
A3: Working together and creating inclusion for all educators is key. @Dan_Slusser and @MrKReigner work hard to create a culture of success for all Ts #whatisschool
A3) I love saying, and I hate saying, that I’m the father of daughters. I felt obligated to say it in the context of #MeToo, as if men shouldn’t care otherwise. Still, kudos to fathers who drive home to their children of all genders that they’re able to be anything. #WhatIsSchool
A3 I would say encouraging and supporting women who are the trailblazers. not just because they are women, but because they are doing great things. There are some great supportive men out there doing great things for women in tech #whatisschool
As teachers we must model this like we do everything else. Students rely on us,watch us and look up to us for 6 hours everyday. We must show them how to support others no matter what. #itmatters#whatisschool

Agreed. I've had women teachers ask me about helping with tech and I never turn them away. I know I'm going to end up learning more from them in the end. #whatisschool
A3: Ever thankful for @J_Bimmerle@chatzopoulosn and @MagicPantsJones for understanding/celebrating that our wee woman brains can understand tech. 😝 Seriously though, these men are some of the most supportive people I know! #whatisschool

A4. I think it's about expectations - expect and encourage/value involvement from the beginning/planning stages in terms of conferences. Don't just expect them to turn up. #whatisschool
A4: Conference organizers need to be cognizant and intentional about balancing male and female speakers. Lots of incredible men in edtech sharing on stage, but the women’s voice can easily be lost. #whatisschool
A4: Creating positive spaces where women can collaborate and support each other. Maybe we should start our own all-women #edtech conference? haha #whatisschool#womeninedtech

A3: Men can support women in #edtech by being an ally (the verb, not the noun). That means taking action. Not offering sensitivity from the sidelines, but driving impact. For me, this includes my husband and @seanbehr#whatisschool
You're right! I think that sums it up. Thanks for the congrats. It made it even more special because she is a 2e student and had faced a lot of judgment prior to this. She encouraged a passion for coding in so many other students. She's one of my #edtech heroes. #whatisschool

A6: Twitter has been one of the most powerful tools for me to learn from others. Chats like these are the prefect platform for us to share #whatisschool
I’ve got to say that I do feel like my voice is heard when it comes to edtech. But we are also lucky to have a great #edtech leader @mrkempnz#whatisschool
This makes me uneasy - perhaps sending the message that women can't compete. Appropriate corporate culture or classroom management and culture can go a long way here. The men need to learn about appropriate behavior too. #WhatIsSchool
A6 I recently started a @TED_ED club in my school, proud to have a great group of students to get started, I am excited to see their confidence and passion for learning and sharing their ideas expand #whatisschool
A6 but don’t force girls in to something they are not interested in. Encourage them if they want to go stem/steam. Forcing them is one of the worst things you can do #whatisschool@JenWilliamsEdu
Appreciate all the men, women, fathers, mothers, and young men that are lifting little girls up to know they can do and be anything that they can dream up! #whatisschool
I worked in the largest all-girls school in the country 15+ years ago. Those girls come out with strong belief in themselves and a wonderful confidence. It definitely translates to college and beyond. #whatisschool
And sharing stories of our experiences, our friends and PLN, in my Ted Ed club meeting yesterday, we watched the "I'm only 17" ted talk, a great message, learned abt it from @gcouros#whatisschool
RT SimpleK12: RT ClassTechTips: A6: The more we can share examples of women in successful STEM/STEAM careers the better! From Grace Hopper to Madame C.J. Walker there are lots of contemporary and historical examples #whatisschool

Yes, so often I find that young students think that who they are now defines them, so not true, world of possibilities, we just need to provide opps for them to explore with confidence #whatisschool
I agree. I wasn't saying we all have to separate by sex. I was referring to single sex schools that already exist. Agree that the right culture and SUPPORT will mean everything to these students. #whatisschool
I don’t know anything about this topic, so my questions are out of pure curiosity. Do you think all male schools work for or against the stereotypes placed on women by men in the workplace? #whatisschool
A6: I have found that when I show interest in these fields and show excitement when doing science experiments, my girls show the same excitement. Bring in literature that highlights women in STEM. #whatisschool
A6) Not sure if I put my thoughts accurately. This is my rough scribble this morning. I have put it in Simon sinek’s style of start with why #whatisschool. I would add opportunities and recognition also to the ‘what’
By the way--- this incredible #whatisschool community is #1 trending topic on Twitter! Bringing the conversation of Women in #EdTech RIGHT TO THE TOP! :)
A6: also don’t forget to tell girls they are good at STEM subjects. There’s research that shows boys and more likely to receive praise in these subject than girls #whatisschool
I think choice in this case is one of the most important ways to bring girls into STEM. Who's designing the lesson? I know I want to see robots with band saws! I also know my daughters don't. #whatisschool
I see a lot of respect taught in those schools. The SouthWest corner of Chicago has been loaded with single-sex Catholic HS's for 50+ years. Guys schools have a strong fraternity feel. #whatisschool
