#Kinderchat, glue, glitter, gogurt, bringing daily joy to twitter. Find us Mondays, 9 pm EST and 8:30PM London time when we talk all things Early Years!
Hello and welcome to tonight’s #kinderchat! Please introduce yourself: tell us your name, where you are from, what you do, and what you are reading right now.
Hi #kinderchat I'm Kendra from Wyoming! I am currently a student at the University of Wyoming and I'm studying Elementary Education! I'm excited to learn from you all!
Oh! I forgot to answer my own question! I just finished a book so now I’m going to start Phillip Pullman’s newest book, “The Book of Dust”. #kinderchat
We’ll start with the prompts in a few minutes after we give folks a chance to settle in. In the mean time, make sure you remember to use the hashtag when responding. #kinderchat
Tried to read Hamilton (book Lin Manuela based his musical on) but didn’t happen. So listened to songs instead. Off to see it with son and daughter tomorrow
#kinderchat
Liane from Abbotsford, Canada. I'm in a Lori Foster fiction mood these days. Light and fluffy, non-school reading at home. School reading: Dive into Inquiry by @trev_mackenzie#kinderchat
The first prompt coming up soon, but first, Context for tonight’s chat: I am challenging us to consider the rights of various stakeholders within a school community. Last chat we discussed the rights of families. Tonight we discuss the rights of children. #kinderchat
A1: I spend more time now than 5 years ago considering the rights of the child. It has been an awakening from what the curriculum says I must teach, to what is important to the child. #kinderchat
I'm still a preservice teacher, but I try to think about the rights of students when teaching, by validating their presence and not condescending their actions. #kinderchat
A1. I work at a public library. I'm not yet in a school setting. However, we do spend a great deal of time and effort into planning and promoting children's programs, outreach, and advocacy for early literacy. Important to get them excited about reading young. #kinderchat
I’m working on an informal theory, but I think the more time that educators, caregivers, administration, and families consider the rights of children, the more happy and engaged and healthy children are. #kinderchat
In my classes we always learn about the importance of teaching to the students and not just to the standards. Focus more on the needs of each individual learner.
It takes time and serious self-reflection/program reflection to remember that we need to understand that Children are complete humans who deserve rights. #kinderchat
I also wonder if the more we trust children to be active and productive citizens the more we implicitly help them understand their own rights and the rights of others. #kinderchat
While for adults “implicit” is understood, I feel for young children (have no age parameters) language and discussions are needed. “Explicit” #kinderchat
Prompt 2- Did this with my staff and families and received: Children deserve—love, respect, trust, play, challenges, engaging environments... #kinderchat
If you are able to and feel as though it would be supported in your context; I encourage you to make an interactive bulliten board asking this question. You’ll be blown away by the answers! #kinderchat
I think I always believed that, my program didn't reflect it. It changed though when I realized that the students in my class were not joyfully engaged. I realized there were needs I wasn't meeting in the students and in me. I'm glad I changed. #kinderchat
It’s a movement. The more I speak with like-minded folks, the more I see individuals who have a deep respect for the rights of children and then spend their time reflecting on how to advocate/educate for the same in their programs. #kinderchat
A3: As teachers I think we are often a child's first line of defense when it comes to ensuring their rights. Teachers need to stay vigilant, involved, and educate (children, families, etc) proactively. #kinderchat
What a wonderful question. I ask myself a version of this when planning lessons. Though l think still too attached to “outcomes.” I’ll ask myself this from now on. #kinderchat
What if we thought about documentation as a form of advocacy for the rights of children? Particularly when it comes to advocating for their right to play and be part of a developmentally appropriate School experience? #kinderchat
A3: We have to speak up for them, even when it is hard/uncomfortable. Small example: I refuse to have school-wide fire drills at rest time. Little ones MATTER. #kinderchat
A3 We are our children’s advocates. If we see something, say something. Let’s not ignore and think someone else will take care of it. We are that someone #kinderchat
As teachers we are the ones who work hands on everyday with these children, we play an instrumental role in ensuring students rights are respected. #kinderchat
Yep! I went to a NAEYC session this year that reminded me of you. It was entirely focused on how thoughtful and intentional documentation is a form of advocacy for DAP. #kinderchat
CRAP!!!! I, for whatever reason, forgot that this starts at 8 and not 8:30 😭😭😭😭😭. I'll just blame the past holiday as it's not like I've been participating in this for the last two years or anything 😭😂😭😂😭#Kinderchat
We just had student-led conferences for all grades: 3yo to Gr6. Parents SAW how their tiny ones are LEARNING while "just" playing. Demonstration & documentation. #kinderchat
YES! So grateful I have a building principal who is always willing to listen and take the needs of our Ss into consideration. There may just by 36 PreK Ss in a building of 500+ K-5gr Ss, but every student matters. If Ts & admin don't stand up for the kids, who will? #KinderChat
A3: We have to speak up for them, even when it is hard/uncomfortable. Small example: I refuse to have school-wide fire drills at rest time. Little ones MATTER. #kinderchat
I don’t have a specific final prompt planned, but I do wonder, what is our role (is it our role?) to advocate for children outside of our own programs? #kinderchat
I think as teachers we are more knowledgeable in the subject field than the average lay person so it is our job to start the conversation and make people aware of the current issues children's rights advocates are facing. #kinderchat
We definitely need to advocate for children, if you are truly teaching to impact the lives of the children in your classroom then you hold other teachers and adults accountable as well #kinderchat
I also think that, though it can be hard, it’s our role to advocate for developmentally and respectful practices to other professionals who may need gentle and loving prompting to think more deeply. #kinderchat
We advocate every time we blog, chat or share our voices on any social media from Twitter to FB for me, with colleagues and in all PD opportunities #kinderchat
Hey #kinderchat ! In need of assistance. Been given 5 ipad minis to use in class. Rural school poor wifi whats best way to set up and manage ipads/accounts/apps etc. #edtech#kindergarten#ipad
I teach in very privileged setting, & am active in larger ECE prof community to help get ALL kids closer to the experiences my students get every day. #kinderchat
And I’m so grateful for everyone who is out on the internet and at conferences and in their communities advocating for best practice and for children. It’s so needed especially in light of folks who are out there trying to “sell magic beans” and snake oil to parents. #kinderchat
As the chat starts to wrap up, I want to share a video (https://t.co/rLCFDwd7oL) from the lovely folks @BoulderJourney who have taken documentation as advocacy to an entirely other level. #kinderchat

This is spot on! Closing your classroom door limits your impact. Every S deserves to be benefited by Tchrs sharing their ideas and learning from one another! #OURstudents#BetterTogether#KinderChat
Yep. I fight this fight in my little way every time I go to conferences. I’m ruthless to vendors in the exhibit hall and am not afraid to call them out when they are trying to sell not developmentally appropriate things. #kinderchat
If you were new to the chat tonight, come on back! We chat with facilitators nearly every Monday night and there’s always people around the hashtag. #kinderchat
I’m literally falling asleep at my phone (there is no tired like Monday tired), so I’m going to wrap up the chat. If you have good news, blogs, something to share-please share away! #kinderchat
Tonight's #kinderchat discussion about advocacy has me thinking about the importance of Tchr engagement and speaking up BEFORE decisions are made/problems occur. If it's for the best of the students, don't be afraid to bring your own chair... #KidsDeserveIt
