Welcome to tonight’s chat! and I will be your moderators as we target Math skills in the digital age classroom.
Let’s start with intros! Tell us where you’re from and what you love most about FALL!
I'm Tiffany from Scottsburg. I teach 6th DigLit. My fave fall treats are candy corn and wearing my boots again!
Hello all. I’m Michelle with the Office of eLearning & coordinator of Chat. Disclaimer: I’m a recovering Engl teacher.
Hi! I am Brenna and I am a elementary education major at IUPUI! My favorite thing is the weather!
Calling all math Ts to the chat! Jump in and introduce yourself.
We LOVE having pre-service Ts in our chats! Welcome!
Hi! I'm Brittany from Scottsburg,K teacher. Tall boots and leggings for sure. Love teaching about fall in my classroom!
First question is coming up! Join when you can. We will use the Q1, R1 format. Be sure to use the hashtag
Hello! I am Molly from Jasper, and I support math Ts with tech integration. I love crisp weather and football!
Q1 How has technology enhanced math instruction in the digital classroom? Give an example of how it has impacted your classroom.
I have a list of fav things about fall-craft fairs are high on the list followed by the fragrance of kicked up fallen leaves
R1 Tech has made my math instruction more engaging for me Ss. Math in K is very hands-on anyway. Tech enhances it!
Lance from MSD of Steuben. Tech Coordinator.
R1 Tech also brings more manipulatives to our Ss hands. It also provides connections to real-world math!
Steve from Valpo. Love football and cooler weather for marathon training.
R1: I taught fourth grade back in the day, but tech allowed me to meet individual needs. Could send a S to work on specific skills
I hear from Math Ts that they love having their Ss create tutorials to assist classmates.
I know DOE math specialist plans to join tonight. Be sure to give him a Follow!
The options for differentiation with tech are endless. https://t.co/33712UaZT8
R1: I taught fourth grade back in the day, but tech allowed me to meet individual needs. Could send a S to work on specific skills
Yes, I didn't have a lot of tech 6 years ago. But I used a doc cam and had a S make homework help vids. He loved it.
Definitely! They love being able to meet every student where they are at.
My math co-hort across the hall creates tutorials w/ . Great for Ss and Ps at home! https://t.co/EeVdNFyJYp
I hear from Math Ts that they love having their Ss create tutorials to assist classmates.
Q2 In which areas do you wish your Ss came to you better prepared? What tools/activities have you found that would be helpful?
R1: I'm a total fanboy. Activity Builder = custom lessons & live look-ins at student understanding.
R1 Technology offers many different tools and resources that can use to help math instruction
R2 I hear Ss need stronger math fact skills so they can build on more diff. concepts. So many great practice apps for this.
R2 In K Ss come in all over the place. I have Ss who can't ID the number 1 and I have Ss who can count to 120.
. the live look-in function is game changing. If my math teachers could have intervened when I first made mistakes...
R2: VHS is piloting MyMathLab. "Math on a screen" still foreign to Ss. MS are 1:1 starting now, so it will be their "normal" by HS
R2 Ss also already have a negative attitude toward math. We cannot let our negative experiences rub off on them.
So true, . So many general tools that can be applied to learning...all the way down to the camera/recorder
great learning doesn't have to be expensive!
R2.1 Honestly if K kids come in with good fine motor skills and able to follow simple instructions, the sky is the limit. :)
Sorry I'm tardy ! Just getting settled in at home after a great Family Night at !
Q3 How can we support special learning communities (HA, SPED) who require intervention in math skills? Share your best tips!
Yea! Glad someone else likes it as much as I do!!
R3 There are so many great differentiated apps for math. and being two of my favorites.
Hopefully it's kept as a support tool. Place for resources. Ts need to help Ss make connections
R3 Love the approach this post takes! It’s not just the tools-it’s the connections tech empowers! https://t.co/PZDVYr0ZPR
Asded bonus: the whole thing is social. So many of my PLN ask for Ts feedback & share their AB creations.
R3: Allow Ss to combine hands on activities w/ great visuals via tech can be powerful for our SPED and HA crowd.
Hey all - John Wells from Evansville dropping in for a bit!
I am getting so many good resources and good advice that I can't wait to use in my future classroom one day!
R3 was always a great go-to for my Ss because I could select topics according to level & they could access anywhere.
Yes!! I have so many tabs open right now :)
This is what it's all about! Keep sharing https://t.co/5LJ6Rdgq7K
I am getting so many good resources and good advice that I can't wait to use in my future classroom one day!
I did NOT know about this until this summer, and I was blown away! Be sure to check it out! https://t.co/aZMs9uioKs
Pearson online learning tool. Integrates seamlessly w/Canvas. Ts can create tasks/assess, Ss get instant feedback.
I'll echo on tech empowering Ss. Our Ss are empowered & take risks (in the good way) when using tech. More too
R3: Math is not my area, but I would think tools to make the math real would be important
. this is really where I see our High Ability Ss benefitting-open challenges (without adding work) are countless
is another of my favorite apps for extra help in the elem.
R3: Make videos more accessible to students utilizing . Videos curated by you the educator for your students.
Q4 Flipping instruction has been a hot topic for math. What benefits do you see to this practice? Downfalls?
Talking math? I have to share 3 Act Math. I think it's the most innovative strategy I've seen for math https://t.co/2uzVhQWhhK
R4 It provides a window to Ps as well as extra help for Ss. Ts can spend more time working with smaller groups of Ss.
This looks like a really neat tool!! Thanks for sharing.
ah Dan Meyer is the man! Thanks for sharing, I'm pinning it to our math board!
R4: For me, I think that ability to practice the math outside of classtime, would help reinforce the skills
R4 Downfalls...cannot rely on videos for the sole teaching. The teacher MUST be actively involved w/ Ss during the class period.
R4: The fact that students can re-watch and pause videos to focus on unfamiliar concepts is awesome.
A4: When we flip/blend, it allows us to spend more face-to-face time w/ Ss to facilitate & support them instead of talking AT them
Ive been carving out time weekly for a 3-Act. In-N-Out Burger 100x100 was epic awesomeness.
R4 I love tools like for Ts can create Qs to check for understanding before Ss can move through videos.
R4 The T can't make it a way to not have to teach during the school day. T has to be available and be fully present for Ss.
Silly question, perhaps, but will it work if YouTube is blocked?
R4: Not strictly "flipping" but I've started posting a ScreenCast of my notes for absent Ss or those who need to see it again.
. it's a different URL so yes unless tech admin have all video blocked; ask to whitelist
Q5 Practice apps definitely have their place in math instruction. Share your favorites! Be sure to share target audience.
I bet parents appreciate it too! (I might be speaking from experience!) https://t.co/t0pYtQ7K68
R4: Not strictly "flipping" but I've started posting a ScreenCast of my notes for absent Ss or those who need to see it again.
I post them w/the assignment on our Canvas, plus they are on my teacher Youtube channel.
How can we use technology in math to cater the various learning styles and needs of students?
I've stumbled across it, but haven't dived in. Definitely curious.
It's slowly gaining traction. I'm getting daily feedback from students telling me it's helpful, so I'll keep making them.
R5 We love and Also manipulative apps such as Geoboard, Ten Frame Fill, Number Line. Counting apps too!
R5 Can't neglect the importance of coding as a math concept as it requires serious critical thinking and problem solving.
Without a doubt the best screencasting app on the iPad. Also available on Chromebooks now.
R5 The great things you can do with the camera! Real world math concepts can become GREAT scavenger hunts & sorts.
. I'm going to have to see if I have those in the Livebinder!
Excellent. Right now my vids are very simple productions. I'd like to do more.
What other apps encourage math practice? https://t.co/ebdeF5q90A
Q5 Practice apps definitely have their place in math instruction. Share your favorites! Be sure to share target audience.
This makes me think of STEM/STEAM and the new CS Standards for K-8-so many possibilities https://t.co/txmSfsK4hz
R5 Can't neglect the importance of coding as a math concept as it requires serious critical thinking and problem solving.
the CS Standards are my driving standards for my course. It's kind of like getting to teach elem again w/ all the subjects!
R5: has some amazing Google Drawing templates on her blog for primary math practice
Q6 What are some of the best assessment or progress tracking tools for math that are authentic and engaging?
A5 I think a really good app for younger children is called QuickMath. It gets them involved ad interacting with the problem
R6 Digital Interactive Notebooks w/ can be so powerful in Math. You get a great picture of Ss learning & growth.
. thanks, new goodies to the math Livebinder!
