A1: This is all about buy-in for me. If I'm not loving what I'm doing, if I don't believe in it, then how in all of gosh darn heckity can I ask my kids to do it? #art#tlap
A1: Be bold and daring! Be hot or cold, not lukewarm! Be healing or refreshing, not apathetic! Overcome the doubt and step outside the comfort zone. That's where the fun begins! #tlap
A1 Trust in yourself that you are the BEST person to teach your Ss. You maybe the only person in their lives that truly cares about them, listens to them, and respects them as individuals. I know that I can make a difference in ALL my kiddos lives—gigantic or small. #TLAP
A1: Have been thinking a lot about being the best ME, and comparing myself of today only to myself of yesterday and my dreams for tomorrow. #tlap#Path2Serendipity
A1) This quotes expresses to me that we are all unique and special. We have varied perspectives and methods that assist us in reaching our goals! #tlap#CameFromCombs#beconfident
A1: Have your own way. We are like rock stars, we’re “in studio” when we prep units, we “rehearse” at PD, we collaborate with each other, and we’re “on tour” for several months - the school year... #tlap
Hi #tlap 👋 I’m Ari from upstate NY, currently a grad student but usually a 7-12 Social Studies teacher; listening to Aretha!! And the Blues Brothers! 😎
A1) I NEEDED this reminder...be confident in what you do, take risks, lead change, inspiration, motivation, discover passion...the worst thing that happens is it doesn’t go as planned and we grow! #tlap
A1: Confidence is everything. Anyone know where I can buy some of that? As Ts it's hard to be confident, but if we aren't then our Ss won't exude confidence either. Confidence = risk taking. #tlap
A1 - No idea, haha. I actually don't mind showing lack of confidence in a number of areas - especially when stretching my comfort zone.
However, I do think that integrity is very important, and confidence is a big part of integrity. Be honest with others about yourself! #tlap
A1 Trust in your training, in your experience, and in your colleagues. Make a decision and stick with it, see it to the end. Don't be swayed by naysayers and doubters. As a school leader, others follow b/c I am confident.
#tlap
A1 artists take risks & find their creative courage. To me it means we must make connections between content areas, between ideas, between school & life. Artists make connections & we must create conditions for ss to make connections too. #tlap
A1: You better THINK about what's in the best interest of the students - and craft learning activities that are FUN and exciting. Like...what would YOU want to do in your classroom? Well, go on then! #tlap
A1: When you get in front of your classroom or staff, whether you are doing something new or something you've done 100 times before, BRING IT! Every single time! Your kids deserve 100%!
#TLAP
A1: Great quote @burgessdave! As a teacher, I get to create lessons each day that will inspire my Ss and get them wanting more. Even if things may not go as we plan, we still act confidently and always have a plan B ready to go. #tlap
A1: When I take a risk to try something new, or when I encourage someone else to join me, we have to be 'all in' and not apologizing before we even start. #tlap
A1. Find your passion, share it with others. Take risks and encourage others to do the same! Use your artistry and creativity in presentation, engage those Ss in learning, So that they may chose their pathways and find their passions in pursueing a carreer! #tlap
1) we compare ourselves to so many “polished” and “photoshopped” experts. We study Pinterest and steal ideas from TpT all in an attempt to keep up. We just need to slow down, study ourselves, and bring our best us every day, all day. #tlap
A1 It means just be you, explore, create, take some risks and go with it, be ok with making mistakes, but don't doubt your abilities, just keep on going #tlap
A1 I just had a little talk with myself about this today, lol. To me this quote is all about taking risks and moving away from the status quo, something this crew is pretty familiar with. #disrupt#tlap
A1 Be confident in all you do, especially when you are confident you need help! Don't be afraid to lean on others when you need them, but also remember tomorrow is a new day! #tlap
A1: What is unique about you...your particular strengths and talents...your VOICE that you add to your class is what will make you most powerful and effective. Bring more of yourself to work! #tlap#TeachingAsAnArt
A1: Don’t do something if your heart is not in it. Trust that if you feel passionately about something, it’s worth trying/pursuing. So what if it fails- just go for it! #tlap
A1: So many people doubt the teacher in today’s culture. It’s easy to start doubting yourself. But you’re doing extra and amazing PD on a Monday night. You are a great teacher. Don’t listen to the doubters. #TLAP
A1: And we need to be larger than life. We also have chill “acoustic sets” and crazy big “productions”. We are artists - in the true sense of the word - we create!!! #tlap
A1 To me it means do your thing. Be open to ideas and cannonball into things you are excited about but don’t let ANYONE box you into their vision. Be YOU, own YOU...it’s what makes you great. Sometimes people want to box you in because they can’t handle your shine. #TLAP
A1: If you are focusing on the WHY and that is to help kids, trust yourself and be confident in what you are doing. Bring an energy and enthusiasm which is contagious! #Tlap
A1 Believe in yourself, confidently take risks by sharing thoughts and ideas. There is not only one answer/Solution to most questions/problems. Embrace your own thinking and creativity. #tlap
A1- My job is to be bold and decisive for our students. My job is to change stars, open doors, and support our students to their #futureself
Sometimes a quiet word, sometimes a metaphorical shove. Hard to do that unless you push hard and chart your own path.
#TLAP
A1: Fake it till you make it. And make it fast. You are a professional so trust your experiences and do what makes sense for you and your students. Own it! #tlap
A1 Intentionality is KEY!
Love how @gcouros says it, "If you don't believe in your idea, who will?"
Does it "the idea" salt the world and make others thirsty for your why?
If yes...#Cannonballin and DO it! #tlap
A1: Rather discuss this one:
"Black people will be free. I’ve been locked up and I know you got to disturb the peace when you can’t get no peace,” when Ms. Franklin discussed bailing out @AngelaDavisWCCO.
(Thinking maybe pale male folk not evoke her while world mourning.)
#tlap
A1 I think it’s always great to remember that teaching is an art - it takes passion, creativity, risks, and truths you can only find and define yourself. The fun is in the journey! #tlap
A1: Great teaching truly is an art form. And you absolutely need to confident always. But confident doesn't mean always having the right answer or doing it on your own. Taking bold risks and being comfortable enough to ask for help can be signs of true confidence, too. #tlap
A1: I love the way my team plans because we form a frame with the curriculum & the district expectations, then we allow for our own teaching style to make the lessons beautiful! I get so excited to try new things & having confidence makes it fun for me & my kiddos! #TLAP
A1: When Good Morning American asked Sr. Mary Jo why she went all the way on the mound, she said "because you have to be all in" Love teaching w/ people with this attitude. #tlap
Own your craft. Express your artistry with courage as if it’s the most important piece of Art that you’ve ever created. In my classroom it’s not only about my art. I’m looking for my very own Picasso, Frida, etc. who doesn’t know that gift belongs to them #tlap#edchat
A1: to be yourself no matter what!! It doesn’t matter what anyone thinks of you as long as you believe in yourself and as a wise college roommate told me once, “you can do anything or wear anythingif you walk in confidence”. #tlap
A1 For mean this quote means "don't worry about what they say when you tweet and sketch and make sure that your students feel safe and valued...no matter what everyone else is doing". #doyouboo#tlap#sillyandIknowit#kidsdeserveit
A2: Switching from elem to middle was tough! Completely different environments and had to really find my own way - now I love it and can't imagine being anywhere else. #tlap
A2: I see the rough side of the mountain as a lot of things I can grab onto, learn from, and keep moving myself & my Ss up that mountain. The smooth side is just plodding along the same worn down path. I'd like to make that a slip & slide. #tlap
A1: confidence can carry you a long way even if you’re not an expert in what you’re doing. There’s a lot of heart in doing something with confidence. Teaching is an art that needs a lot of heart. #TLAP
#tlap A2. The sense of accomplishment...the resilience, the self confidence, critical thinking all come as an outcome of following the dream ....the rough side
A2 Learning, strength, inspiration comes from the Rough Side of the Mountain! It's what brought me to try a new approach, a new lesson, students' ideas, my PLN near & far, everything! #tlap
A1. There are always so many people telling educators how it all has to be done. Everyone also has their research. I told my staff this year to just try being them! Be Innovative, Be Bold,Be You! #tlap
A2 changing the culture of how a building thinks when new ideas are introduced that stretch people out of their comfort zones. It takes patience and determination but the gratification as progress takes place is overwhelming #tlap
A2 Oh the mountains of education...we were re-accredited this last year and 5 of the commendations are because we climbed the mountain. Parents and teachers trust our decisions and see us an innovative, not just strange!
#tlap
A2: For me, this was my first year. The rough side, well... it was rough. The upside of a rough side is that there was so much to hold on to. All I had to do to climb up and get better was to reach out to my peers like @MrsLedford6Eng and I was UP #TLAP
A3 Rough side of a mountain, grit, perseverance...it's all important! Kids need to know your story so they can relate and have confidence they will get through rough patches too. #tlap
A2: Budget cuts! But what these cuts in money cause is us to be more creative with the resources that we do have. Finding new ways to use things and to reach kids stretches that creativity muscle which can bring out the best in us! #tlap
A2 Stepping out in leadership roles. It is tough when you can't make everyone happy. Trying not to take it personally is my rough side of the mountain. #tlap
A2 My favorite “failures” were the ones my kids got to see live. Lesson flops? The room can always come up with a great way to make or more dynamic, engaging, and meaningful. Ss know what they want and need - we only have to listen. #tlap
Hola #tlap! NJ World Lang teacher here. I love Aretha’s Respect song, it’s being played a lot in her memory. Also, since I teach HS I’ve been listening to rap & popular music. Being familiar with what they listen to creates another level of connection with my students!
A1 no one can be you like you can. If you truly understand your why confidence comes easier. Stand up and make it happen, reflect and improve over and over and over! #tlap
A2 it was never easy, and it took us 12 years but Addison is a reader now. It was a rough climb. If the journey isn’t challenging, the destination isn’t rewarding #tlap#autism
A2: I don't know that I've climbed the rough side but I think of our kids who climb the rough side daily and for that they get to stand at the acme and celebrate learning and a better life #tlap
A2: the rough side makes you stronger. I wouldn’t be the person or teacher I am today without having worked with the kids at an alternative ed campus. Those kids were in constant crisis and it taught me how to care for them in many ways #TLAP
A2- Taking on leading a 6-12 priority school with 2200 students has been without a doubt the most rewarding work thus far in my career. Every day is an opportunity. #TLAP
A2 every year should feel like the rough side of a mountain. Sure, it's nice to do the same things over and over, but there's no adventure there, either. Things'll flop. But that's OK when you're on a great journey. #tlap
A2: When I first started teaching, I almost quit because of an evaluation I received. I pushed through and became an even better teacher. In fact I am now one of five finalists for the ACTFL National Language Teacher of the Year. It’s the journey that makes us who we are. #tlap
A2) Building new relationships each year. The journey to the smooth side is filled with exchanging of ideas, sharing achievents and working conflicts. This keeps a team focused on reaching our goal. #tlap
A1 TRY what you're thinking, discuss it with educators, students, parents. TRY or let someone else lead that classroom. The people in the room deserve someone who's all in. #tlap
A2: the climb, the journey, is only worth it if we take a moment to admire the view and see what we’ve overcome to get there. It’s in those moments of reflection that I realize all that I’ve learned and how I’ve grown. It’s not always easy, but it sure is worth it 💜 #tlap
#tlap
A2 Build perseverance, set goals, resilience, pushes you with a challenge and definitely can be out of comfort zone, and it helps us develop different skills to grow on #tlap
A2 Switched from K/1 to 5th... ended up loving it! My sarcasm and sense of humor ended up being a perfect match. Don’t limit yourself, push yourself! #tlap
A2 - As with most things in life, when you struggle or fail you also learn. This is something I try to instill in my classroom culture - not only is failure okay, it's encouraged! I try to start the year with activities that encourage risks and failure. #tlap
A2: Challengecalls for - and forces - growth. Smooth is cool, so long as you don’t get complacent. “Is it a groove or is it a rut?” -Rush “Face Up”, Roll the ?Bones, 1991... #tlap
A2 HMM, the rough side of the EduMountain taught me that it wasn't ME that was the problem. It was the leader. I learned to stop, evaluate, check myself. And it really helps me now when I encounter the same type of person. #itsallgood#tlap
A2: Finally having the courage to listen to @rickwormeli2 and giving up traditional grading. It was hard and the parent backlashes the beginning made it even worse. But the right thing to do and glad I did it. #TLAP
A2. Rough side of the mountain is setting goals and working through them by making some mistakes and problem solving, but still achieving those goals which were relatively easy. #tlap
A2: last year I moved from 3rd grade to 1st-2nd it was a culture shock, but it grew me as a teacher and made learn to stand up for myself cause I was the newbie on campus. #tlap
A2 This past year. Toughest of my career on multiple levels. I came out with resiliency—it didn’t break me and I am committed to doing things the way I know are right by Ss and live with whatever the consequences are. To teach each day like it’s the last #tlap
A2: Remembering that every year is a new year- it requires the same open mindset to 25+ new ways of learning. The time I invest now will pay off and the feeling of the unknown and the unsteady will be secure again! I cannot be fully prepared for those I haven’t met yet! #tlap
A2 I think of the smooth side as ‘the way we’ve always done things’ and the rough side being the innovative risks that lead to redesigning things to better meet the needs of Ss. #tlap
A2: What it means to me: Life is about experiences. The bumps and bruises along the way fill a life with good stories. The smooth side is also the bland and boring side where no obstacle is overcome and no feeling of triumph follows. #tlap
A2 Teaching 3rd grade (testing grade) was the “rough side” for me...I’m now back in kindergarten (where I belong)...but that experience helped me gain perspective an understanding of testing grades and passion to stand against a test driven education system. #tlap
A2: Oh my! The confidence...the self empowerment and the TRUE feeling of happiness. There is a sense of pride that comes along. I transitioned into a new role due to “climbing” the mountain!! #tlap
A2 Moving to the 6/7 split was super hard—juggling two different curriculums and having no prep in between switching from one grade to the next was a challenge but I LOVE IT. I get to see some kids a second time around in 7th— the rapport and relationships made are AWEsome! #tlap
A2: As a young mother, working 40 hours and going to college was a challenge. I persevered and have overcome many "rough" patches. Beauty never comes from the easy path in life. I believe in working hard, choosing to find the positive, and never giving up. #tlap
A2: Climb the rough side a lot! Testing, paper work, lack of communication, paperwork.. blah blah, but when those kids want to come into my class and learn and say it's fun and enjoy it! That's all the outcome I want! #tlap
A2) A2) a few outcomes from climbing the mountain are1.) being inspired to be the leader I want to be 2.) finding my crew 3.) connecting with amazing people like you 4.) a job opportunity that starts tomorrow bringing my passions together 😃#tlap
A2: My 1st year of teaching, I got the “bad kid dump”-it was the hardest thing I’ve ever experienced, but now I know what I’m pursuing my masters in-behavior focus 🙌🏻 I also feel better able to connect w/ “tough” students after finishing that year & more w/ great results! #TLAP
A2: By climbing the rough side of that mountain, I learned that I’m stronger than I realized & it reaffirmed that I’m truly meant to be a teacher. I learned patience, perseverance, and discovered real professional passions. #tlap
A2: Putting myself outside of my comfort zone in many ways in order to grow as an educator: presenting, room transformations, PBL, blogs, etc. It’s uncomfortable at times but necessary for growth. #tlap
A2: Traversing the rough side of the mountain comes with its risks, but it always teaches us coping skills that those on the smooth side will never learn. We end up ready for the next rough patch. #tlap
A2 When we launched our app in schools, our educators were nervous they would get many false reports. They didn't get much at all and now they're using the vital data so they can prepare for the times of year when bullying ramps up. #tlap#BackToSchool2018
A2: Last year my rough side was building a new Modern US History course. From playing 'Find the Dirty Pinko Commie' to researching people like Malcolm X and Ted Bundy, kids came to expect the unexpected. It was hard work. #tlap
A2. Love loving kids who can make it difficult to love them. The “toughest” kids can bring out the best in those who are willing to show compassion, patience and care. #tlap
Setting the bar above grade level expectations when the scholars have been told how low they are... I had to show them that they belong up there with the Stars ⭐️ #tlap#edchat
A2 I have found the places to grab onto when climbing the “rough” side often take the form of colleagues, family, friends that provide provide support & a perfect spot to climb a little higher. Rough side is easier when you look for guidance & trust from those around you #tlap
A2 it’s when we live through those struggles that we find life’s greatest lessons& triumphs. (You definitely appreciate any smooth sailing that forms) #tlap
A3: I use to look to others for assurance. One day, after reflecting, I realized I never looked to myself. I was who I was looking for. Then, I was able to help others. #tlap
A2: Joining late! The rough side of the mountain for me is when I take on something that NOBODY else in my district is doing, and then I do it. From #tlap , #flexibleseating & Ss tracking their mastery of standards...that's the rough side.
#tlap I stayed at a school not because it is easy but because the teachers are the toughest most antiquated I’ve worked with! True reform comes from showing them new learning pathways and having them implement one tiny itty bitty thing at a time.
A3 It is in us. We have the ability to see, create, be, get whatever we need. For our lives and for the benefit of your students and education itself. #tlap
A2: I was working in a district level position- decided to change districts & move back to a school level position for family and to earn NBPTS. Was hard leaving old district but couldn’t imagine doing anything else now. Love my team and my kiddos #tlap
A2: Ditching my one armed desk classroom for one that works for students. It took me three years and lots of different ways to fund flexible seating. It was a slow build but worth it. Now it works for everything I want to do with my students. #tlap
A2: Other climbers will always be coming up after you. When you climb the rough side and tackle that mountain, you gain experience & wisdom that you pass on to others on their climb. It is the ongoing, positive, life-changing ripple effect of your struggle. #tlap
A2b: My personal journey through education has been quite the climb. My background is one that could have gone a completely other path, but God, great teachers, the right people at the right time, and inner strength to overcome helped me achieve so many great things. #tlap
A2: In 2 years I was assigned 4 positions. Two as AP and two principal positions which were in a center based program and an elementary school, both of which I had limited experience. I weathered the storm, got out of survival mode and am entering THRIVE mode. #TLAP
A1. I felt a little like this today. I taught in a new style I had never tried before and beforehand I was scared but by the end it was great! Gotta take a bold move.
#Tlap
A2 The final product never reveals the whole process. It's the journey that makes the climbing that mountain so rewarding. I'm thankful for the obstacles in my life. It's made me a more appreciative & empathetic EDU. I didn't see it when I was a kid, but I see it now. #tlap
A3 Don’t underestimate your students...encourage them to dig deep! They have what it takes to succeed...sometimes they just need a push to see it!! #tlap
A3: When we are looking for greatness, we often don't have to look far. It is right in front of us daily if we watch our teachers and watch our kids! #tlap
A1: If you do not believe in yourself, you will be hard pressed to accomplish what you want to do. You may need a boost now and then but you have to have confidence to get up and go! For me, confidence is linked directly to a courageous heart. #tlap
A3 - when given the opportunity to move up in another district or staying put in my current position! I was flatter but the timing was not right and just needed to stay put!! #tlap
3) Sometimes I get caught looking around for my cheerleader and advocate instead of staring at the guy in the mirror. I am more than enough and that’s sometimes so hard to remember #tlap
A3 This is why it is so important to find your tribe! Find people who push you, love you, support you, make you laugh, make you cry, all of it! Your tribe can re-inspire you after rough times. #tlap
A3: Usually it comes from learning you had more in you than you ever thought before. My first experience with this was in HS Football. I learned that I always had more to give my teammates. More sprints, more blocks, more encouragement. #tlap
A2: Climbing the rough side, which seems to vary from year-to-year, has made me a better teacher and a better person. A positive outlook, a little patience, and the ability to embrace change have all be reinforced through that climb. #tlap
A3: This makes me think of the whole 'can't see the forest for the trees' quote. When we're in a rut, it's easy to hang our heads, but if we'll look up, usually the answer is right in front of us. Sometimes we just need a new perspective, reframe the situation. #tlap
A3) the strength and talents that are within me...doubt would creep in and I’d always turn to others to make sure I was on the right track...I have what it takes! #tlap
A3: I think we do this all all the time. We try to make things more complicated than it should be and the answer is simple and right in front of us, if only we would slow down and stop and think for a moment...hmm, like what we tell our students sometimes 🤔 #tlap
A3: When you let go of the struggle & anxiety, oftentimes the answer is right there. “You will know. When you are calm. At Peace...” -Yoda, The Empire Strikes Back #tlap
A3 ss bring insatiable curiosity, wonder, creativity when they come to school. It’s our job to create the conditions to help these skills grow & flourish. #tlap
A3 the moment when I stopped stressing about making sure my lessons had the right objective vocal and standards listed and started focusing on helping my students find the joy in learning. #tlap
A3. Curiosity to continue learning. We never stop learning. Every day,if we pay close attention, there is something to learn! Never stop learning! #tlap
A3: I strongly believe that our teachers are our greatest resource for finding the answers to the questions we ask. This is why I am so passionate about teachers seeing each other teach and talking about what they are doing, thinking, reading, etc. We hold the answers! #TLAP
A3: To thine own self be true. Usually we know in our hearts how to best reach our students and grow them. Seek more from within than seeking out. #tlap
A3: When I look for the courage to step on the stage to sing or step in front of a crowd of teachers ready to learn, it's there. When I need the next big idea or solution to a problem I've been struggling with, it is suddenly there. Love it when a plan comes together. #tlap
A3 THIS is so important to learn. And I finally did learn it in the past few years. Be content where you are and DO YOU. Reminds me of that line from Pretty Woman: "That's just geography." Where you are isn't as important as WHO you are." #70sbaby#realtalk#tlap
A3 the moment that sticks out the most is when I moved into the role as a Principal. I was wanting more as an educator but didn’t know what that more was. I took the leap to an admin role after resisting several opportunities and I ask myself everyday what took me so long #tlap
A3 I overanalyze everything and worry too much. I’ve learned to just “let it go” sometimes and “trust the process” @JoelEmbiid I have reflected more on what’s going amazing and keep working that in other areas. #tlap
Challenges! It was very hard but I would not trade it for the world. I learned so much from those experiences which included my fair share of failures. #growthmindset#TLAP
A2: Climbing the rough side of the mountain pertains to my doctoral journey (5 years to complete), and helping lead my previous ES from being accredited with warning to being fully accredited. The journey was hard but worth the climb #tlap
A2: Oh my! The confidence...the self empowerment and the TRUE feeling of happiness. There is a sense of pride that comes along. I transitioned into a new role due to “climbing” the mountain!! #tlap
There are many people in our lives who surprise us when we need them most. These are the educators who are always there for their students and one another. Thank you to all of you who make a difference! #tlap#ItTakesAVillage
I was thinking of the forest saying too - my dad always said that! Look too hard for an answer and you overlook the solution right before you! #tlap Great minds!!
A3: I think we so often look for bigger or better things when what we really need is right there in front of us!! Sometimes life surprises you when you least expect it!!! I think it’s so important to just BE STILL & open your eyes!! #tlap
A3 What was there was my family, my God, and my passion for education. I sought more experience but I found it in my colleagues. I needed wisdom and it was there in my the words of my wife.
#tlap
A2) The rough side of EDUMountain has led to thicker skin and some scars but an increased tenacity to make it to the top. Every challenge has taught me so much more than the easy days. #tlap
A3 OMG! When I read #tlap earlier this summer. So much of it resonated with what I had already been doing but didn’t fit the “box” someone was trying to put me in. Totally reaffirmed/resonated w/ me... and opened my world to other things. @burgessdave#tlap
A3: My grandma recently past away and I was looking for strength get through the first week of school with students and somehow be able to give the eulogy. I thought I needed strength, but when it came time for the eulogy, I realized I had the strength within me all along #tlap
A3: Oh my... this happens more than I can say. When I’m feeling overwhelmed I disconnect and sit on my thoughts. It is then that I empower myself to see my truths... most often in the small things around me. #tlap
I think it was Bob Dylan who said he was out of ideas, got on his motorcycle, & went into the woods. Woke up the morning and wrote his best album... #tlap
A2: By climbing the rough side of that mountain, I learned that I’m stronger than I realized & it reaffirmed that I’m truly meant to be a teacher. I learned patience, perseverance, and discovered real professional passions. #tlap
1/2 some one posted an alternate quote, I tried to reply, but lost it. The #tlap questions are great, but I wanted to give some love and respect to that quote also... if you see it, here’s my answer
A3: I think every teacher should go into another teacher's classroom each day and just ask questions to learn more. So many good ideas right in front of us. #tlap
A3 Sometimes just need to step back take a deep breath and remember “we’ve got this!” Things can get overwhelming but find the joy in little things and you’ll find success. #tlap
A3 - It’s 30 years of teaching and I’ve known for a while thstcygus was what I loved doing. Other chances have come up, but it’s being in front of kids that is special. #tlap
A3: I’ve always wanted to make a difference and help people, and I was waiting for a big moment to do that. In teaching, it’s all the small moments and ones you don’t even realize you’re creating with students that matter the most to them! #TLAP
A2: rough side is fighting for my students, even when others don’t understand my “reality”. Also starting jobs in new districts-have to learn their culture and programs and quickly develop trust! #tlap
I doubted myself a lot. I have learned that if I believe I can achieve, work hard to accomplish my goals it helps me empower my students to do the same. #tlap
Q4: She was known as the Queen of Soul for a reason! What she brought to her music was authentic and incomparable. How do you bring YOUR soul into your EDU-setting? #tlap
A3: Some people who I never would have expected to be my tribe, have become my tribe. And some people who I really wanted to be my tribe aren't, and that's okay. We don't always know what is best for us. #tlap
A3 this is why networking and finding your crew is so important! Surround yourself with those who inspire, support, encourage AND challenge you. My people always help me to see that I’ve got it in me, even when I didn’t realize it myself! Love this #tlap family for that! ❤️☠️
A3: My mom told me for years that I should be an administrator. I told her I would NEVER go to the dark side. Now I'm less than a year from finishing my admin degree & principal certification. #tlap
A3 Take a moment and learn from the little people. I used to love walking into classes and kneel next to a student and say, "Teach me something new today."
They ALWAYS had something to teach me & many times it was pretty darn new to me. LOVE the way Ss see the world. #tlap
A3: In PD, many systems fail to tap into the unbelievable talent they have right in their own building. Empower colleagues to become contributors...seek them out! #tlap
A3: I love learning new things, but I have learned I have to measure everything to what I consider my why and “True North.” New for being new is not the answer. Align change up to what is in your heart. #tlap
A3: I tend to carry other people’s burdens and worry about things I cannot change. I am intentionally trying to refocus on those outcomes I can reasonably influence! #tlap
A3: I have to remember I bring a variety of knowledge and experience to the table. Be willing to jump in and try something, even if it’s new or risky #tlap#bereal
This year I'm quite excited to see which teachers my students think I can learn from; I've got two surveys throughout the term asking them this question (among others). #tlap
A4: My soul, my heart, everything I've got belongs to my Ss. I can't imagine NOT bringing my soul into my EDU-setting! It's just how I roll - all the time, since day 1. #tlap
Q4: She was known as the Queen of Soul for a reason! What she brought to her music was authentic and incomparable. How do you bring YOUR soul into your EDU-setting? #tlap

I’m Julie from Indiana and I teach Interpersonal Relationships classes at Mishawaka High School! A1: My go to music is Macklemore and maybe some 21 Pilots or Foster the People! #tlap
A3b - The great thing about education is that when you feel it’s your life, the students you teach usually feel that same emotion about your class. #tlap

A3: Constantly tell my own kids that I can have fun anywhere. Bloom where you're planted. And at school? My "countdown" is always: There are zero days until today! #tlap
A3: In PD, many systems fail to tap into the unbelievable talent they have right in their own building. Empower colleagues to become contributors...seek them out! #tlap
A4 Immerse yourself and support eachother. It’s not about where you are. It’s about how you give and are present every day. Some watches and takes heart daily! #tlap
A4 - by bringing my passion every day to educate the students and support my teachers! It starts with a smilingface and greeting everyone as they pass by going to class when they get to school! #tlap
Feeling those first day jitters starting to creep up. First year as a curriculum director and VP after 10 years in the classroom. Want to inspire change but trying to set realistic and attainable goals #tlap@burgessdave
A4 I let my life experiences, struggles, adversity, joy success, failure and those that have stood beside me or not with me at all to help me connect with kids and build a relationship with them.. I tell my story to make a difference in the lives of others #tlap
A4 - Students will be much more motivated if you are motivated. Find out what interests you when you teach, and focus on that. Your natural energy will actually help energize your students! Motivated, energized students learn better! #tlap
A lot of the times when I have needed support it was right in front of me. I work with some talented people and they almost always have the answered I need. Sometimes, I need to trust myself some more because I have the answers. #TLAP
A3: For me it goes back to the change of positions. I moved up the ladder, but missed working with kids. We can try different things but if we’re lucky we end up following our passions. For me it’s working with “my kids”. The position was nice but I missed my “heart”. #tlap
A4: I'd say this is about Passion. This is what I bring every day. I can't wait to talk about school and talk about making it amazing #tlap#LeadLAP#CultureMatters
A4 Relationships, relationships, relationships. Being real and making those connections with Ss that I am here for them and will be there no matter what. Opening myself up being goofy, caring, and supportive for my kids. #tlap
A4 I bring my soul through sharing positivity with others. Noticing what's amazing around me. I'm an optimist. I need the realists in my life for sure, but won't let the positive go unsaid. It's as much for me as it is for others. #tlap#bekind
A3: Getting caught up in the busyness of life can take me away from the ‘centre’ I seek...my family, my God, my health...right there in front of me and I miss ‘it’, at times. #tlap
A3: We spend our lives seeking jobs we love, but teachers are the lucky ones because our job IS to love the people in our schools. Is there anything better than that? #tlap
A4 Make learning relatable to kids! Real world problem solving doesn't mean inserting their names into the word problem. Let their passions drive their learning. #tlap
A1: It reminds me of a quote I tell my students from Henry Ford " Whether you think you can or think you can't you're right" Confidence is everything! #tlap
A4 I'm doubling-down on relevance this year in reading (piloting novels), writing (blogs to practice skills traded with other classes from all over!), and life & tech skills (to impact our community using our ELA skills: reading, writing, listening, speaking) #tlap
A4: I’m real with my Ss. I’m positive and have fun. I show them it’s okay to make mistakes. We celebrate the victories and work through the challenges and I stay with them every step of the way. I never give up. #tlap
A4: sharing your own stories/experiences with students can be so powerful; often they see connections to their own lives or they see a brand new perspective and both are motivating #tlap
A4: I bring the French language and culture to my Ss every day. I share all my travel photos with my Ss so they can actually feel like they are experiencing the language. Sharing my passion for French makes my Ss feel that passion and in turn they are more excited to learn. #tlap
A4 I went through some pretty tough stuff growing up, so I use that experience as a driving force to really learn who my students are outside of academics. #tlap
Q4: How can you be in education as not have your soul in your work? Impossible! The soul is where it’s at! Depth, connections, empathy, communication, hugs even!#tlap
A4: I 1st see how to connect my content or my delivery to bring my SOUL into my teaching. Then I bring it. Maybe with music, or creativity, or the all out "room transformation guest speaker I'm in the life changing business experience, but I bring it." I stamp it with me. #tlap
A4: My soul has always been connected to helping others see past the obstacles, never let yourself or others keep you down, dream big dreams, and always try. #tlap
A3 Families and caregivers are incredibly valuable in knowing kids. Family/caregiver partnerships are critical. Teachers and families must be allies. #TLAP
A4: Relationships first, everything else second. Treat every child they way you would want your own child to be treated. Kids are precious gifts. Handle them as such. #tlap
I bring my heart and soul everyday. I'm passionate about helping My students BELIEVE they can achieve. I try to be fun, silly and creative. And, I will break out in song and dance if that what it takes! LOL #tlap
Q4: She was known as the Queen of Soul for a reason! What she brought to her music was authentic and incomparable. How do you bring YOUR soul into your EDU-setting? #tlap
A4: Fun! We are created to be learners and yet so often hate “learning” or school by 3rd grade. We have to foster the love of learning and the fun that comes from it naturally in our classrooms. #TLAP
A4: Relationships are so important to me!! They are foundation for all that I do in the classroom!! I spend time making those connections with my Ss & it’s the focus for our #globalcollaboration journey!!! #tlap
A4 - Students see right through malarkey. I work to ensure they know I care about them and their safety and their interests. Standards come after all that. #tlap
I hated high school for so many reasons. I don’t want anyone else to hate it like I did. I want them to know it can be great. People care - I care - and I make sure to tell all my students. #TLAP
Q4: She was known as the Queen of Soul for a reason! What she brought to her music was authentic and incomparable. How do you bring YOUR soul into your EDU-setting? #tlap
Yes, for any doubters @ConcordMiddle I did once tussle with an alligator, found in a kiddie pool, in an apartment in the city. Suspect arrested for possession of stolen items. No this is not the actual gator, but similar. Hmm? Gators or MS Ss? 😂 #tlap#joy#imabitcrazy#cmspdl
A4: My school is my life! I bring everything I have everyday to make school amazing for my kids and teachers and am not satisfied unless I know I left everything I have out on the floor everyday. I truly love what I get to do & want everyone else to love it as much as I do! #TLAP
As school leaders we need to provide the opportunities for collaboration, the resources and supports needed for successful implementation, and then celebrate the positive outcomes. Invest in your people! #Tlap
A4: I’m my quirky self. I randomly make things into songs or burst into song, talk in accents, and my students feed off of it... they realize learning can be silly and fun. One student started talking in accents randomly by the end of the year, it was great! #tlap
A4 The soul of the work is the passion for building the future by helping young people become the best they can be by following their own passions. They are MY future too! #tlap
A4 I'm always brining my REALness via f2f or virtually
I've had the opportunity to bring my REAL message to quite a few school districts this summer AND to share my passion of writing w/the world through the book. #honored#tlap
A4. By listening to the stories our Ss share, we learn about each S individual life. Different cultures, experienes, places lived, etc. We can model empathy, bring positivity, caring and kindness to Ss. Work 1:1 with them on homework! #tlap
Q4: She was known as the Queen of Soul for a reason! What she brought to her music was authentic and incomparable. How do you bring YOUR soul into your EDU-setting? #tlap
I struggled with this today, b/c it's my nature to support and help, but when Parents & Ss don't hold up their end of the agreement, then what? Need to learn some responsibility too. #tlap
A4: as important as it is to incorporate students’ passions & interests into the classroom, it’s equally important to share & include ours, too! I loved Rubik’s cubing with my students , connecting with the world, telling them about my fam & showing them bits of my blog! #tlap
4) My soul is the real me. The words may be the same, but the voice is all mine. My life & my beliefs are based on the wisdom of others, but I am all me.I want others to know what inspires me, but that it’s also all me. Always be willing to answer “why” to whatever you do. #tlap
A4 I truly believe our future depends on the creative minds of our ss. My goal is, at the very least, maintain the creative capacities of ss who enter the art studio. At best, I work as hard as I can to create the conditions to grow creative thinking abilities of all ss #tlap
A4: Student told me today that I needed to be more excited. I told her I was waiting for right moment. My "soul" shows up when I make new content for them to enjoy in the classroom. I used to just stand in front of the class and make them laugh, now I know they need more #tlap
Q5: Everybody makes mistakes...adults and kids. I certainly have a long list I have made. They don't define you nor those you serve! In what ways does the Aretha quote below resonate with you? #tlap
A4: My soul is all about not forgetting what it was like being a struggling student or a minority or the new kid. I know what it’s like to struggle and my kids benefit from that. #TLAP
A4: I have 400 kids that I get to have an impact on every single day. If that’s not soul-worthy, I don’t know what is. You have to put your sole into loving those kids. Anything less is unacceptable. #tlap
Q4: She was known as the Queen of Soul for a reason! What she brought to her music was authentic and incomparable. How do you bring YOUR soul into your EDU-setting? #tlap
A4: I’m real with my Ss. I’m positive and have fun. I show them it’s okay to make mistakes. We celebrate the victories and work through the challenges and I stay with them every step of the way. I never give up. #tlap
A2: I have landed in Kindergarten after 28 years of this education journey...and it’s been a bit of a roller coaster ride getting here...but I’m in a good place! 😊 #tlap
A4 Humor and creativity. I want to influence those around me. I can't that by being someone else or pretending to be something I'm not. Make PD enjoyable, make Ts and Ss smile, play ping pong with seniors, eat a snack with kindergartners, wear silly hats.
#tlap
A4: To understand pride/success, you have to experience it. I want to help my teachers create exp. that inspire that for Ts AND Ss. I do this by keeping a toe in the classroom (when I can). I don’t ask of my teachers anything I haven’t done or wouldn’t be willing to do. #tlap
A4: I am very passionate about helping others! I LOVE finding ideas & sharing with others. I am willing to use "...unorthodox tactics to spark and kindle the flame of creativity and imagination in the minds of teachers/students." #tlap
Q5: Everybody makes mistakes...adults and kids. I certainly have a long list I have made. They don't define you nor those you serve! In what ways does the Aretha quote below resonate with you? #tlap
A5: Fail Forward! Maybe something did not work, it's what you do next that speaks volumes about you as a person! Be on the lookout for the great things that follow! #tlap
Q5: I’ve had people judge me as a teacher from one observation. It’s a snapshot. It may go poorly but I can grow from it. Support me on my teaching journey #tlap
A4 I bring my genuine self...devoted to serving others. After losing a baby brother to SIDS when I was little I developed the mantra “Every day you wake up is a good day” and live/breath that everyday—and share that with students. They know I care & I am always genuine. #TLAP
Q4: She was known as the Queen of Soul for a reason! What she brought to her music was authentic and incomparable. How do you bring YOUR soul into your EDU-setting? #tlap
#tlap Jerry Toups HS math teacher from the Houston area. Just finished freshmen orientation! A4 I bring soul into my room with #BelieveSelfies KIDS LOVE GETTING A BELIEVE SELFIE! And... If they get on the wall, its a #BigDeal!
A4 I am me. I don’t try to be anyone else. I’m real, authentic. Life is too hard to not be who your are. By modeling that-we ARE indeed doing a great service to our students. Be happy with & take pride in “you” #tlap
A5: Forgive freely. Forget how others have wronged you, and forgive yourself. We all make mistakes - some are minuscule and some are monstrous. Give yourself and others grace. #tlap
A5 - we cannot judge or teachers or our students on their mistakes nor hold grudges or allow for their reputation carry over from year to year! Give them a clean slate and teach from their mistakes! #tlap
A5: I tell students that mistakes are ok. We need to learn from them and move on. I demonstate to them that mistakes happen in learning and in real like. #tlap
I try to always support and help but also recognize when I am working harder than the other person and they are not as invested as they need to be to make it happen! #tlap
A4: I’m ALL about dressing up, theme-ing out, and connecting my student’s learning with what they love! I’m very enthusiastic and ready to help my school anyway I can ❤️ #TLAP
A5 Love those kids through whatever is going on with them. Students deserve a blank slate, daily if you have to. Goes along with my latest blog post https://t.co/slOkNeGdSy#tlap
A5: Of course this reminds me of our students, but I'm trying to remember this about adults too, especially coworkers. Less judging, more forgiving, less grudges (tough for me!!!) #tlap
A5: We cannot let one test or evaluation define ourselves or our Ss. We all are more than a single score. Ts need to look at thewhe picture and not just one piece of the puzzle. #tlap
A5 - One important thing to remember, especially during stressful times, is the fact that students are still kids - they are still learning, and mistakes (especially behavioral ones) are a part of that process. One mistake does not make a kid "bad" (or 2, or 3, etc.) #tlap
A5: AMEN! If we are going to be vulnerable and REAL we must also have those around us that allow us to trip up. Brush others off... share your own imperfections. Forgive. Move on. #BetterTogether#tlap
A5 find the good in people not a person in he world is perfect. It’s not about the mistakes but how we recover from them and where our intentions lie #tlap
A5 Two things: 1. Grades. 2. How we value skills. So many skills are not linked to a grade, so some students do not recognize their talents, skills, and valuable traits. They see their grades which cannot reflect the students' worth purpose, or ability. #tlap
A5 My pastor once said, "It's not what have you done for me lately but what have you done for me formerly."
Aka, we can't allow one mistake to ruin it for an individual or cancel out all of the beautiful things they have done previously. We are all fallible humans. #tlap
A4: I teach my kids to sing from their heart and their toes💕🎶🎵 sometimes we sing like no one is watching and some times we hum so softly. But always we sing from our soul 💕🎶🎵 #tlap
A5 - lemme talk plagiarism, OK? Bane of the English teacher. But when you take a minute to talk with a student, see what's going on, and why they did it, it becomes pivotal in that student's learning experience and your relationship. #tlap
A5: Looking at just one thing doesn't tell the whole story, doesn't capture the journey, and certainly doesn't even represent what things will become, how I grow. We must learn from the mistakes & forgive ourselves. Move on. Do something great. #tlap
A5: As educators we can be so hard on ourselves and forget about all the good that we do. We have to “focus so much on the positive that the negative becomes impossible to hear.” #tlap
A5 Each day is a brand new start. That's why I especially love Mondays! Forget what is behind and look ahead at all the possibilities. Don't let yours or your Students' past define you! #Tlap
Q5: Everybody makes mistakes...adults and kids. I certainly have a long list I have made. They don't define you nor those you serve! In what ways does the Aretha quote below resonate with you? #tlap
Love this!! Be the best you and let the chips fall where they may. The fit works in many directions so we can be selective too. Control what we can and never extinguish the dream. Passion and tireless work always create somebody’s superstar. #tlap#Path2Serendipity#Integrity
A1: Have been thinking a lot about being the best ME, and comparing myself of today only to myself of yesterday and my dreams for tomorrow. #tlap#Path2Serendipity
Just because a song is good doesn’tmean it’s going to be a hit. Bowie used to talk about his music following his Let’s Dance album as trying to be too anticipatory of his audience & it boxed him in creatively... #tlap
A5 we all say mistakes are a great learning opportunity, but do we model this? Do our actions back up what we say or are we sending mixed messages? Embracing failure and sharing and modeling what we do next is crucial! Transparency is a must! #tlap
Q5: Everybody makes mistakes...adults and kids. I certainly have a long list I have made. They don't define you nor those you serve! In what ways does the Aretha quote below resonate with you? #tlap
A5 EVERYONE messes up. If they didn't they'd be perfect and NOBODY is perfect. Have to learn from it. Move on. Unless there is an actual concern, assume it's just their humanity and help them see where they can tweak for future improvement. #leadlap#tlap
A5: We ALL make mistakes, have bad days. But the greatest gift of tomorrow is we get to start over. All students deserve the safe feeling of knowing they can have a bad day and you won't hold it against them. #tlap
Q5: Everybody makes mistakes...adults and kids. I certainly have a long list I have made. They don't define you nor those you serve! In what ways does the Aretha quote below resonate with you? #tlap
#tlap A5 I was bullied in 5th and 6th grade. Later on I made friendships with those who called me names. Over time, I really can't remember the good times with my "friends". The hateful names are etched in my memory. I share this with my Ss. 1 ACTION CAN ERASE A LIFETIME OF GOOD!
A5 We are all human, therefore, failure, mistakes, let downs, sadness will happen. Yet, that’s not the defining part of being human—it’s about making connections and sharing those things and the GOOD in all of us. Again, relationships. Going through them TOGETHER. #TLAP
A5: If we didn't make mistakes, then we wouldn't be trying. Only those that settle for mediocrity are without mistakes. Taking chances can involves failure. Learn from it and move on. #tlap
A5 cont'd - as one of my students pointed out today talking about The Outsiders, we ALL do stupid stuff and make mistakes. How we handle those mistakes is crucial. I had one student last year who plagiarized an assignment. She met with me after... #tlap
A5 It reminds me of data and graphs. What we look for is trends and trend lines, not a single blip on the screen. A single test or assignment is one blip, but that one blip along with other assessments makes a picture.
#tlap
A5) man, for a while it felt like it was fail after fail for me, personally and professionally...it’s what you do with the fail...the comeback is greater than the setback! #tlap
A5: I think about this at every soccer practice/game when my son's coach critiques or congratulates on every thing each player does. He doesn't label them as one thing or the other, he assesses each act. Sometimes in the same sentence! #tlap "That's a bad ball..turned out nice.."
A5: That 1 EoY assessment doesn’t define a S. They aren’t that number and we aren’t an average of our Ss scores. Our Ss are individuals that all bring unique skills to the world. Our job is not to make sure they score well on a test but develop global citizens. #TLAP
A5. Everyday is a new day. We all start off with clean slates. We must give multiple chances for each S. We do not know what they are dealing with at home before they come to school! #tlap
A4: I feel like a team cheerleader. I love working w/ my team & kids. I see how far we’ve come & how much of a family we are. I brag on them constantly. I work in a school most people only dream of. For the kids-I want to bring the world to them so they know what awaits! #tlap
A5: We all have our strengths and weaknesses. We can show our Ss it is okay to fail and find ways to help our Ss shine through their strengths, rather than focusing on weaknesses. We can also keep a positive mindset to help us grow as individuals. #tlap
A5: We judge a lot. It’s easy to be frustrated with yourself, a student, co-worker, whatever, but if you only see the mistakes you miss their/your full potential. Maybe they/you had a bad day, we all have them. Brush it off, show grace, and move forward. #tlap
(even more A5) ...she was honest; I had her redo the assignment. Best submission of her entire semester. All she needed was someone to tell her it wasn't about the perfect answer but her voice. And she NAILED it. After a mistake. #tlap
A5: I only know one perfect person to walk on this earth, and it isn't me. I fail, I fall short, but I get back up. I seek to encourage the same of my students when they fall down. We can all learn from mistakes to create future wins and successes. #tlap
A5: Every day is a blank slate - let the frustration of yesterday’s mistakes go. Grant grace to your learners and to yourself. Be grateful for the chance to try again! #tlap
Q5: Everybody makes mistakes...adults and kids. I certainly have a long list I have made. They don't define you nor those you serve! In what ways does the Aretha quote below resonate with you? #tlap

A5: It reminds me of bad discipline plans. Students make one mistake and end up suspended from school. Where's the process, where's the learning? #tlap
A5: the sun will come up tomorrow! And we will forgive and forget and start a new day. We will have lived and loved and messed up. We will accept it and move towards the fresh new ray of a new day 💕🎶🎵 #tlap
A5: it’s more important to focus on the person, not the action. We all make mistakes and have rough days. Forgive. Don’t hold on to the past... start each day with a clean slate! #tlap
#tlap "We are all learners, doers, teachers"--Richard Bach. When you remember that you too are a learner who needs to be shown patience and forgiveness, it's easier to grant those things to the young learners in front of you.
Take a class, learn a skill. Be a student again.
5) We make excuses for our mistakes and blame others for theirs. Kids need to know that every mistake can be fixed. Don’t embrace the mistake. Embrace the fix. #tlap
A5: It's humbling to think of strangers seeing my one bad moment and knowing that's what they will remember. Nobody should feel defeated because of one mistake. Not Ts or Ss. #tlap
A5 My 2017-2018 in a nutshell. That you need the whole story & context. That a few moments & opinions of a few shouldn’t tell your story. That you have to, everyday, craft your narrative/story & be proactive about it. Make sure people know the real you & ignore “dabblers” #tlap
Q5: Everybody makes mistakes...adults and kids. I certainly have a long list I have made. They don't define you nor those you serve! In what ways does the Aretha quote below resonate with you? #tlap
A5 cont. I used to ask my staff, would you be OK if I held you to the same standard you are holding your Ss to? Many times the answer was no way! Let's be mindful of our little people. THEY must have a fresh start EVERYday. #tlap
For me--School was my place of hope & a way out.
A5: Thank you, Aretha!! I needed to be reminded of this! It’s important to acknowledge what needs improvement, but not to the extent that success is overlooked. This goes for Ss, Ts, and ourselves! #tlap
@burgessdave A5: Well, that goes along with the #tlap spirit. Not everything works out and sometimes it’s just not meant to be. As far as relationships I appreciate those who offer a bit of grace towards me when I mess up. Acceptance feels good. #tlap
A5: We all have moments, we would not want to be replayed. We have to give consideration and grace just as we would want. “Realize that others have burdens and pains that we know nothing about, and these could be framing their comments and reactions...” #talktome#tlap
the easiest Ss to judge are the ones who are messing with your classroom management. They don’t intend(mostly) to interrupt, get things off task, or distract but because they are the most inconvenient to teach in a group, a teachers snapshot of them can not be a good rep #tlap
A5 We are there to set an example. Can’t expect our future to be made of positive leaders if we focus on their mistakes. Positive/growth mindset. #tlap
Q6: I make sure I get to know each of my Ss from the start of school. I show them that they are important to me and that I respect them as learners. #tlap
A5 everyone you meet has something to teach you. Seize the opportunity this presents and do not shut out the opportunity to learn and grow. Often the biggest leaps in our peoplehood appear from and when we least expect it. #tlap
A5: We cannot judge others based on A decision, A comment. We all make mistakes. Who are we to judge others? What if we take time to listen? To understand? To believe that everyone begins with a good intention? How would that change a situation? A relationship? #tlap
We fall short daily in various areas known and unknown and we expect for God to forgive us and/or the person we inflicted to forgive, for remembering these things will make it easier to forgive. I always ask my Ss why are you bringing up old stuff? Yesterday was yesterday #tlap
Q5: Everybody makes mistakes...adults and kids. I certainly have a long list I have made. They don't define you nor those you serve! In what ways does the Aretha quote below resonate with you? #tlap
A5 We have to see Ss and people for everything they are, the goo and the not so good! We all have positives and negatives and that makes us human. We have to see kids for the humans they are, not just learners, or whatever label we give them that day. We all need chances #tlap
Q5: Everybody has bad days, even teachers! It is important for me to remember to give my future students and colleagues grace when they make mistakes because I am not perfect either. #tlap
A6 The easy answer is treat your students, no matter what the age Iike people.....people who have bad days, need second chances, and have big ideas for days.... #tlap
A5 Each step we take whether negatively positives a learning experience. We build on the experience through our reaction. These continue to make us who we are. We choose our journey as we go as well as our reactions, which build on our future. #tlap
A5: My kiddos are still learning how to be great citizens-I own my mistakes and model thinking through my problem solving so they can build those skills. Focusing on their greats helps you smooth out their fail-forwards! We can’t define someone by one trait or one year... #TLAP
I don't even have words for how freakin' awesome this is!!!! Way to go MasterBrand and everyone else who donated so this incredible space could be a rest stop for teachers. Can't wait to see more!!! #TLAP#CelebrateMonday#ThePepperEffect#igniteyourSHINE

A6: By showing R-E-S-P-E-C-T to my Ss & colleagues, I model. Even when a colleague is not reciprocating, I model it (mostly). When Ss are respected, both personally & their instructional time, then they start to follow my lead. #tlap
#tlap@burgessdave, You made a tremendous positive impact in our district thanks to @mmingle1 ,@klemerich for their vision. @mbgabel and I want to bring you back to Madison! Thank you for touching the future every day by empowering Ts to follow passion and teach like a pirate!

A6 - by leading by example and modeling what respect looks like! For your teachers and students to respect you you must now show them respect to earn their respect and trust! #tlap
#tlap Don't make anyone ask to go to the bathroom. Seriously. Is anything more patronizing than trying to control another person's bladder? I show R-E-S-P-E-C-T by letting Ss go without asking.
A6 - I build relationships best I can, and listen best I can. I only have my life experience to fall back on, and I teach anywhere from 200-300 students a year who all have different life experiences. Respect is earned, and I work hard to earn it. #tlap
A6 Model respect so students know what that looks like. Some might come from homes where respect isn't present. When Ts say "be respectful", it's very vague. #tlap

OPEN YOUR SCHOOL YEAR."

Educators get to open a new show each year, let your students have that opportunity too! Don't let others tell you about their past imperfections! #TLAP#EduGIFs
#tlap A5 Pt 2 There is a story about my bullying experience found in my book "The Story of Always Believe" coming out this fall!!! I read this story to my Ss on #ReadAcrossAmericaDay My Ss applaud at the end of it! Going through this experience really helps me connect with Ss
A6: I try to treat everyone how I want to be treated. When you treat a kid with respect you gain respect back, same with that co-worker who you might just have to kill with kindness till they come through. #tlap
A6: I look them in the eyes and listen to their beautiful ideas and tell them when they are moving mountains with education. I always value their impact on my learning along with others. Age does not define knowledge and I never play more importance on my role over theirs. #tlap
A6 Working at an international school helps create an atmosphere of multiculturalism, but I still need to be intentional. I must be aware of what is U.S. and what is Honduran, what is cultural and what is moral, esp. in thought and mindset.
#tlap
A5. It should take a lot more than one mistake to get booted out of a #teachertribe. We have all wanted a reply button from time to time. #HalfFull#tlap
A6 As a teacher of the littlest ones in school, I want them to hear me valuing each person for the amazing things they can bring to our classroom. A great comment on a story, a math connection, a kind act, a thoughtful response. Model RESPECT. #PreKLikeAPirate ☠️ #tlap
A5: This brings up testing for me. Students and teachers get judged on the performance on our End of Grade tests. That one test can help both student and teacher feel like a hero or zero. It doesn’t measure the day to day victories. We are so much more than a test score. #tlap
A6: Giving voice & really listening w/ my heart.Validating feelings & including everyone. As soon as I found out that 3 of my Ss were homosexual, I got them from class, hugged them & told them I accept & love them. Then - tears. Lots of tears. #tlap
A6 take a moment each week to thank someone. Student, teacher, admin...be genuine in your gratitude. It'll be amazing what happens! Started it a few years ago and have never regretted it. #tlap
A6: I promote a classroom culture that honors student voice & choice! I want my students to know that their views are valued and respected! We teach kindness, empathy, acceptance, & respect! We have so much to learn from each other! #tlap
A5: If we are going to create an environment that is innovative, it has to involve risk taking. If students and colleagues are going to take risks, then we have to be able to forgive the mistakes. We are not defined by our mistakes, but our unwillingness to try. #TLAP
A6 I try to live by John Woodens Pyramid of Success but also have 4 basic precepts in my classroom: always be honest, always give your best effort, always respect the learning environment, & always be positive #tlap
My entire journey to the educator I am today. Getting my foot into the school system, building up my craft, starting my master's degrees (completing this fall). And the struggle was all worthwhile when looking down from the peaks I have reached #Tlap
A1 Katy Perry’s “Rise” is a great song! Never give up! Keep trying to be better than before! Always try to stand strong when you feel beat down. Keep coming back, show up with a smile! #tlap#classroomreality
A6 Celebrate any and all progress! Whether it is following all the steps to a lab report, getting a D instead of an E (grades are another topic), sharing an answer aloud for the first time, or finally getting proficient on an assessment. They all deserve love and respect. #tlap
A6 Books, books, books. All the books. Kids should see themselves in the books in your room. I'm sold out to #ownvoices books. Also this site: https://t.co/qplWcNmYf8 World map with international children's books from that country. New list every year. #TLAP
It is important for leadership to be mindful of this as well and to know that even adults are human and that staff may fall short, but we have to encourage, support, and not become too far removed to who they were in the classroom and school building prior to leadership #Tlap
Q5: Everybody makes mistakes...adults and kids. I certainly have a long list I have made. They don't define you nor those you serve! In what ways does the Aretha quote below resonate with you? #tlap
A4 One way we can respect Ss is to ensure we aren’t unintentionally shaming them. Watch for this @ELmagazine article next week and #teardownthechart#tlap
A6: By building relationships with Ss and truly getting to know them as individuals, showing empathy and validating their feelings, and giving them a voice in the classroom. #tlap
A6) Treat them with the same respect and dignity as you expect from them... I refer to my Ss as Mr or Miss "last name", because that is the way they are expected to address Ts. #tlap
A6: One of the best ways to show your students R-E-S-P-E-C-T is to L-I-S-T-E-N. Listen with genuine care and honor their voice in meaningful ways. #tlap
#tlap A6 Be a #servantleader! Put the Ss ahead of your needs. Treat everyone the same! Do your best to have your Ss describe you with these descriptors. Its what the teaching is all about!
A6: Treat everyone the way you want to be treated. Own up to your mistakes, apologize when necessary. Work to get to know students and staff- build relationships and trust. #TLAP
A6: Lead with love. Start with relationships. Connect. Build trust. Model respect, and talk about it openly and sincerely. Ask questions and listen to understand, not to respond. Be deeply curious about the people in your world. #tlap
A6 I always think about how I would like to be treated. Also keep in mind that we don’t know what is going on behind the scenes and in the other person’s. Always assume positive intent. #tlap
#tlap Affirm and thank every S for asking a question. Showing vulnerability is the hardest thing for many teenagers to do. Making the classroom a safe place to risk and grow is an act of love and R-E-S-P-E-C-T for the person an S is and the one he or she wants to become.
A6 Diversity in learners also has to do with readiness. Each S deserves a T who studies them, plans differentiated instruction AND formative assessments. Rich learning for ALL. #TLAP
A5: I show respect to students by giving my all as often and as long as I can (and sometimes somehow MORE than I thought I could) but one of my big things is when Ss disrespect themselves with self deprecating language. I have to be there for them esp when they’re not. #tlap
A6: “Little things don’t mean a lot. They mean everything.” Harvey McKay, business writer, How to Swim with the Sharks without Being Eaten Alive... Know the “little things”!!! #tlap
A1: A1 Katy Perry’s “Rise” is a great song! Never give up! Keep trying to be better than before! Always try to stand strong when you feel beat down. Keep coming back, show up with a smile! #tlap#classroomreality@burgessdave
A6: step away from my own life and understand the cultural lens that my crew and my ss look though. For me, understanding race theories and being willing to hold the mic is how I show respect #TLAP
@burgessdave Q6: Honor each other first as human beings and respect our thoughts and opinions. We all com from different backgrounds and experiences. Use that to your school’d advantage! #tlap
A6 As an administrator I show respect by trusting my staff, giving them the autonomy to be innovative and bold. I give credit where it is due and get to know them, their families, and ask questions about who they are not only as educators but as individuals. #tlap
A6 Value your learners, your community, and their grit by providing opportunities for growth and voice to shine. Provide the tools and opportunities—sit back and enjoy the view of what our learners can do! #tlap
If you put passion in what you do the enthusiasm will shine through and the soul will come out for others to see. I put it in what I teach, how I teach, share and connect with Ss and Ts #tlap
Q4: She was known as the Queen of Soul for a reason! What she brought to her music was authentic and incomparable. How do you bring YOUR soul into your EDU-setting? #tlap
A6. With our Ss of different cultures, allow them times to talk and share about their different cultures and nationalities with other Ss. Talk about different holidays on the calendar! Some families celebrate every holiday! Extremely diverse!#tlap
A6: Working with staff we all need to speak in a positive way about our kids, our families and our colleagues. I'm challenging the staff to keep this pledge #tlap
A7 We teach our students what it means to give back through monthly leadership projects for community members in need, or simply those who are not recognized for their amazing work. #tlap
A7: Being a leader within the teaching profession increasingly means both refining your practice in the classroom and being a vocal advocate outside of it. #tlap
A7 - by helping every chance I get! Cleaning tables at lunch mopping floors when the custodiansneed help. By listening to the students and teachers when they need to vent. By just simply caring for all that I encounter on a daily basis at WHS!#tlap
A6 We have pro-social skill lessons integrated into our read alouds. We establish class norms together. I do my best to have my Ss feel as though they are part of the team when decisions are made #tlap
A7: I show my class a clip of the Japanese classrooms where they don’t have custodians. Then the first day our awesome custodians are out, we clean our room and leave him a thank you. #TLAP
A7: I've always liked the saying that you cannot reach a student through Bloom's until Maslow's is taken care of... In many cases it is the things that we do to make sure a student feels safe and loved that are more important than any content we will teach them. #tlap
A6: For most of my Ss and I’m sure for most adults.... respect means to be valued, to be heard, and to be seen as an equal with equal brains, beauty, and individual talents. Each one of us was born with a purpose and who are we to get in each other’s way. #tlap
#tlap If only we could Cline you @burgessdave to provide and consult PD for all schools! You are the voice of reason and ratio Al thinking! Imagine what the future of education would look like with you at the helm of our ship!
A6: EXPLICITLY TEACH IT! I’m surprised when some people say they don’t need to—I promise you do! We even reiterate our expectations for coworker respect coming back to school. This sets the tone for our whole campus to be respectful! #TLAP
A7: I do my best to be visible - committees, board meetings, events, I host an open mic-ish night for our students a few times a year... I try to connect with parents & students over good news... #tlap
A7 We are all on a TEAM. I wipe tables down during lunch duty, attend as many after school events as possible (not just sports), and always pumping people up in the halls—giving energy and fist bumps. #TLAP
A7: The way that I have been focused on serving is helping my kids celebrate themselves, their gifts & talents. Be proud of who they are. We celebrated with tshirts and a talent expo that showcased ALL kinds of talents. Can't wait to know what talents my new kids have! #tlap
A7 - So I do believe that you need to lead by example as an educator. For example, if you preach honesty, it is important to model honesty. If you preach respect, it is important to model respect. I also believe in balancing teaching with all the other parts of my life! #tlap
A7: I make myself available and share my ideas. When someone needs me I make sure to connect them to those that can help if I’m unable. #SquadGoals#tlap#Nan3EDU
A1 For me this means you have to be yourself. Know that what you do & what you know is enough. With that in mind, know that your Ss will be more confident in their learning as well with you! #tlap
A7 social emotional learning comes first, always. Content will only stick if we focus on relationships and making sure that all students feel loved and safe at school. https://t.co/z2LBz10aHj#tlap
A7: I spend time helping my colleagues learn new technology to improve their teaching. I always make time to give back. It’s so important to share what you know to help others get there too. #tlap
A7: this week’s fresh veggies from our school garden, organized by our high school Interact Club (@Rotary ) - students learn how to garden and how to give back to their community by donating the vegetables to our local food pantry #tlap
School is a safe haven for Ts just as it is Ss. As instructional coach I am there to listen, shoulder to cry on, create a space to get away, take you to mall, bring you coffee, whatever is needed to be practice my calling of service leadership. #Tlap
A7; By modeling that no job is beneath me. If someone needs help, I help them. I encourage Ss to do the same, and then I expect them to do the same. If we can make someone's day brighter, we do! Below, coffee bar in my room w/barista friend to serve Ts! #tlap
#tlap A7 The more you make your life about the kids, the more #joy you recieve as an educator! I am blessed to be on the field with the kids during #FridayNightLights This will be my 15th season to capture the kids in actions! I produce a video of each game! #blessed
A7: Our teachers show up to community events in our district. During the holidays we give out candy and books. Other times we are fundraising for cancer. It's imperative that our community view us as active participants. #tlap

A7) take Ss on scheduled volunteer opportunities (food bank, soup kitchen, etc...) during class time and participate right along side them. Watching them grow and glow with confidence and pride. #tlap
A7 Yup, content is only a piece of the puzzle. Our job is to provide experiences, passion for learning, trying new things and stretching our thoughts, beliefs, ideas, and questions. #growth#loveoflearning#bepartofthevillage#tlap
A7 my Student Council has created Talent Shows, Lip Sync Battle, organized Penny Wars to donate to the @LLSusa, sold Candy Canes with positive notes and more. Want my book club to build a @LittleFreeLibra this year #TLAP
A7 I gotta think that my passion for #sketchnotes with students is something I do to serve students I don't know but hope will bring them (or their teachers) a new way to express themselves and improved learning. And I get to share it at the @edtechteam#NorthGeorgiaSummit! #tlap
Hey #tlap crew - thanks for the chat, comments, likes, and follows tonight! I wrote an article on getting more from Twitter as a teacher. If you have a chance, take a look!
https://t.co/3gOt157J5o
I truly feel that is my job. I will never ask of others what I am not willing to do myself. I am not above anyone at my school and will mop the floors, teach a lesson, deliver papers, or wipe a nose just like I feel any other staff member would. It’s a team effort! #tlap
Honoring their voices. What they like, how they learn, their perspectives, opinions, ideas and more. Really listening and hearing their voices for my Ts and Ss is a great sign of R-E-S-P-E-C-T #Tlap
A7: I help with afterschool activities when I can. And I am working at getting more involved in my church, which few kids from my district go to, so the students can see I have passion outside of school too. #tlap
A7 jump in and provide all hands on deck! I spent my day in Kinder and saw everything through a 5/6 year old today. Be willing to support your staff and cultivate that learning community. #tlap
Happy to, Will. Here’s one of my favorite articles on the subject. Rather than praising smarts, encourage effort. I think this is a great way to recognize and respect the burgeoning talents of our students https://t.co/RjMM6ngxRH#tlap
#tlap When you teach at a boarding school, you are more than just a T. You are a parent, a coach, a mentor...a spiritual advisor. And it is 24-7. Service is not a 9-5 job...it's a lifestyle.
A7: As a media coordinator it’s pitching in to help out wherever, running to help a teacher whose tech has failed during lesson, helping a student find that perfect book, being a teaching partner, cheerleader, advocate, sounding board, innovative &willing to try anything 😊#tlap
Thanks for a great chat tonight #tlap Tomorrow I'll have the pleasure of working with all our Freshmen and transfer Ss, and probably watching more news crews roll into @Marian_Catholic to interview Sr. Mary Jo.
A7: By leading by example. Treating students, families, teachers, clerks, and all staff with R.E.S.P.E.C.T! Thanks Aretha! I never ask anyone to do anything I wouldn't or haven't done. #tlap
https://t.co/MByDO6hjq1 Love the Olympic version. Also love the Greatest Showman soundtrack. So many positive uplifting songs to remind us all to keep dreaming! #tlap
A7: I look for opportunities to give back & love having my Ss participate in serving others!! Kindness challenges are a big initiative in our classroom. We love spreading kindness across campus & sending #kindnesspackages to classes we connect with! #tlap
A7: I think attribution is also key. there are to many all about me organizations in ours lifes. I try to not only say thank you for a great idea or correction of one of many less than great ones, but also give attribution to that teacher, student, parent who generated it. #tlap
A7 Above all things--we must be REAL with those we serve.
Relatable
Expose Vulnerability
Approachable
Learning through Life
It's vital to sustain the heart of education. Not bc that is my book title--but bc it is the REAL truth! #tlap
A7 Buying snacks for teachers and other little encouragements. We have "cookie jars" for each teacher. Staff is encouraged to give each other "cookies" regularly.
#tlap
A7: Teaching is a service career. You can’t reach the mind without first reaching the heart. We should be leading in service. Showing our students that leadership is synonymous with serving others. #tlap
A7: Attend school events, offer help to other coworkers, communicate with families, and put students first-the more you’re involved, the more connected and invested you are to the success of the kiddos and the community-class, school, district, and town! #TLAP
A7: I treat all of my students in each of my classes as if they’re my only class I have all day! I recall important details about each of them so they know how much I care about them! Excellent Customer service and great experiences are what matters in my classroom! #TLAP
#tlap A7 I am at the service of my children , the school anytime they need me .I help coordinate the community service outreach for my grade in a very very intensive and extensive fashion

A2: Grad school with a toddler while full time teaching & building in family time/extracurricular time. It takes a lot of time management but it is possible. We’re all proof of that! #tlap
