Tonight we are discussing "9th Grade Transitions"

-
Q1: What barriers stand in the way of a successful transition for students from 8th to 9th grade?

-

1. Transportation. 2. Schedules 9th grade orientation needs to be build into a schedule if it is important.

-
Hi Dale....AP in SE Wisconsin

-
Q2: How can middle and high schools work together to produce a solid transition?

-
A1: issues depend on ur system. Size of system and learning culture are so key. Student leadership like Link is critical.

-
school counselors are critical in the conversation about transition.

-
A2. Even simple things like knowing how to get a lunch or turn in an attendance note are part of the transition process.

-
Hi all, Sharin, AP at a MS in Wisco joining tonight

-
Kristen AP from Deerfield, IL joining late.

-
A1 I would say that solid structures that are vastly different or non-existent are barriers for Ss transitioning from 1 level 2 next

-
A2: We have a Deerfield vertical alignment committee that meets several times a year to discuss curriculum and instruction.

-
A2: Also, our veritcal alignment committee created a timeline for 8th grade and 9th grade S, T, P and admin.

-
A2: Something we need to improve on everywhere in Ed--Communication among stakeholders to improve networks for Ss success

-
A1: Barriers such as time can create a divide between the two; it is up to the leaders and teachers to bridge the gap for students.

-
If you are an AP, join the right now on Twitter, LIVE!

-
Q3: How can we empower students to support the transition to 9th grade?

-
A3: We can empower S in 9th grade, by asking them what they wished they needed when they were in 8th. Have them speak to 8th grade S

-
A3. Empowering Ss. starts with awareness of expectations. Conversations started early and often

-
I agree. A survey could help jump start the conversation!

-
A3: Stu leadership team--building their capacity as leaders is something we're working on in MS to empower them w/in THEIR school

-
We are starting a student leadership challenge this year for all S with the hope that 8 will grow as leaders!

-
I like how you said 'conversation' so as to involve the Ss in the process, giving them a voice and ownership.

-
What specifically will your team do to cultivate Ss ldrship? That's our challenge this year, right ? ;-)

-
conversations among students about pathways and experiences is powerful!

-
As a T team, we created a list of leadership traits; we are going to ask S to rank these traits (part 1)

-
We will have a know and do part every month with the leadership traits to challenge the S to LIVE it OUT!

-
Q4: How can ensure that we are being proactive rather than reactive for our 9th grade students?

-
A4: We need to find out what their needs are and create systems of support before they even enter 9th grade for both S and P.

-
A4: Communicate early and often what Ss can expect and depend on--going back to those structures, procedures and systems

-
A4 speak to and show Ss and families about what their options are at that HS. Create energy around what awaits w/ all the positives

-
A4: identifying needs and aligning responses. Flexibility to change every year as needs change.

-
A4: communicate early and often between MS and HS. Put ur best teachers in 9th grade and out of AP classes and upper level.

-
Q5: What resources and/or programs can assist in making a stronger 9th grade transition?

-
A5: Our local HS does a nice job with a "Warrior orientation" over the summer and an Advisory program during the year.

-
A4. Proactive = parental involvement. Communication with parents. Recruit them to the team!

-
A5.
Student mentors
A 9th grade only day
9th grade interviews

-

-
A5. Internal resources: student council, school counselors, Aevidum
