Welcome back to another year of #espechat! My name is Matt & I'll be your moderator this evening as we discuss building rapport w/ Ss. Who is joining us, where are you from, and share one nugget you got from #Physedsummit this last week OR share what session you want to check out
Another helpful hint for following a chat. Highlight and copy our hashtag (#ESPEChat) and then paste it the rest of the night into your messages. This is a great way to avoid a silly spelling mistake! :)
We follow the Q1/A1 format for #ESPEchat. I'll post the question and the number (ex: Q2), answer using A and the number (A2). This helps us to keep track of what your answering!
Hi my name is Crystal and I'm from Memphis, TN...I learned a lot info for my adaptive PE class...One thing I added was I created stop and go signs...Thursday will be out 1st class so I can't wait to see how it works #ESPEchat
Hey hey HEY #ESPEchat 👋🏼🤓!!! This is Stephanie Sandino, I’m a ms #physed teacher (grades 7+8) from Southern California! Caught a couple of nuggets from @MsTuckerRocksPE session in how to incorporate and include ss culture in your lessons!
Good evening Matt. Jaryd Prince joining from Iowa. One nugget I got from the #physedsummit was some suggestion of how to start the year off right with procedures and routines. #ESPEchat
Patty from Texas...Going into my 10th year of teaching and made a goal for this school year to get more involved technology wise. I'm a Twitter junkie, but a newbie to this type of discussion. Excited to learn some new things! #ESPEchat
#espechat hey everybody Mark from IL here with @foes4sports checking in on our anniversary. What is wrong with us attending a twitter chat on this day?
A1) at the elementary level, it is extremely difficult because we are build their love for learning and they continue one, but my goal is to create life long relationships with them. I try to convey a message that I would be there for them no matter what! #espechat
Colin from Saskatchewan. Also half a month away, but like @PhysEdApps mentioned I feel like an island right now. Need some inspiration to get going again #ESPEchat
A1 getting to know your students and build strong positive relationships with them allows them to trust you and allows you to create lessons that are meaningful and relate to them #espechat
A1: For me, building a relationship is critical....helps create a positive class culture, gives me the opportunity to allow students to lead, improves class behavior. #espechat
This tweet goes out to anyone who is out there lurking 👀 #espechat... get in here!! I was once a lurker, jumped in one day, and haven't looked back! Come say hi!!
A1) Building rapport is helpful to get Ss to buy into what I have to offer them; it is necessary for them to understand why to buy into what I offer them - healthy, active living, sports, or positive skills #espechat
Rachel from NJ. A1 Knowing our students is everything! It helps us make informed decisions about what they need to learn and grow in our classrooms. #espechat
A1) They are our "why" and they are willing to work for us, if they know that we are invested and care for them. It helps with classroom management too. #ESPEchat
A1 It’s the foundation of the year, it’s the beginning of letting your ss know— “hey I see you 👀, I care about you, welcome to my class, the place where you aren’t just a number.” Today a ss said to me: you’re the 2nd teacher that knew my name on the 2nd day of school #ESPEchat
Hi this is Roy from DC! Im excited to be joining today. One session from #Physedsummit im looking forward to going back and checking out is @MrWillPE session about developing relationships #espechat
During the times where students struggle, or have had a rough day. I remember the things that make them happy and smile and try to relate to those topics. #espechat
Or even they have that comfort level with you that they may not have with another teacher & it makes them more willing to listen to you when you try to make their day better #espechat
Welcome to #ESPEChat Colin! Thanks for taking the time out of your summer to join us this evening! My I suggest watching a few of our #Physedsummit videos found on our website for inspiration!
A2: I have Ss share how they and their families were active over the summer. This allows be to learn what is valued at home so I can better connect. #ESPEchat
A2) I am looking forward to others responses here, but I will use bingo type activities to learn how they spent their summer, what activities they like to do. I like to do musical hoops where there has to be two people in a hoop discussing a prompted question. #espechat
A2) . We start our year with cooperative activities unit- gives Ss a chance to get to know each other & me a chance to speak with Ss. I will be sending out survey within the next week to find out likes/dislikes, etc. #espechat
A2) Got this idea from one of @AdventureEdGuy's sessions..."Silly Willy Icebreaker Cards" Have Ss complete the silly tasks on the card before getting a new one. Download them for free here: https://t.co/ceG5gYqUgD#espechat
Hi. Julie Miller here. I spend several weeks doing teambuilding and cooperative activities (most are from Pat Vickroy). It sets the tone for the rest of the year. #ESPEchat
A2: Have students create a goal for #physed called their “hope and dream.” I read and post every single one in the gym and we reflect on them as the year goes on. #espechat
#espechat thank you so much everyone for the kind words and gifs. That really means a lot to us. Yes the #Physed#healthed community is amazing. I think I am tearing up.
A2 This side/That side...This yr I added Ss had talk to each about whatever side they chose. Ex if you like vanilla ice cream over chocolate you had to tell someone what toppings do you like on your ice cream #ESPEchat
A2) Got this idea from one of @AdventureEdGuy's sessions..."Silly Willy Icebreaker Cards" Have Ss complete the silly tasks on the card before getting a new one. Download them for free here: https://t.co/ceG5gYqUgD#espechat
A2) I do fun, instant activities that get them moving, laughing, and interacting with each other - breaking the ice - (i.e. Monster Ball, Co-Op Team games, Tennis Ball Games, Silly Games) #espechat
A2 I use different team building activities so students get the opportunity to work as a team right from the start. It sets the tone early on that we are all here to help each other through the ups and downs #ESPEChat
A2) I teach my kids a rock, paper, scissors cardio warm up at the beginning of the year, and while they're traveling from one four square to another, I'll step in & play some and ask them questions or I'll ask both ss questions before they can move on. #ESPEchat
a2 @djhberg's fitness activities are awesome too for getting to know students. students follow a list/sequence of activities, embedded within those are checkins where Ss go to T and answer a question #espechat
A2) Want to incorporate something with My Expectations for PE & Your (Ss) Expectations for PE to give a combined knowledge/understanding/ownership of what the entire year in PE will be like #espechat
Thanks brother, but credit goes to @AdventureEdGuy for the inspiration...he had premade cards in his session that were from a company but I couldn't remember what they were called so I just made my own #espechat
a2 @djhberg's fitness activities are awesome too for getting to know students. students follow a list/sequence of activities, embedded within those are checkins where Ss go to T and answer a question #espechat
Absolutely! Any other teachers in our schools don't have nearly as deep a relationship with some Ss as we do & that's where we can be the effectors of change #espechat
A2 to be honest I lack at that. Maybe that’s one of the things I need to focus on the first few weeks. Might have to borrow some ideas from tonight. #espechat
After building rapport, I know their strengths & then utilize their strengths in different ways. Some Ss love demonstrating, others not so much. Some Ss are better peer models. Some are better organizers & can help lead small groups.Helps to know their strengths first. #espechat
And he’s also making fun of me for the “ in and out” comment. That’s really why he’s “tearing up”! More like cracking up!! Some men never grow up!!! #espechat
A2 There’s a lot of housekeeping stuff that happens, so the first week I like to have a lot of conversations on picture day, when I issue lockers, etc. When we get to dressing out I want to try @MsTuckerRocksPE BINGO activity w questions attached to exercise/activity #ESPEchat
Not necessarily built in lesson wise, but they're the reason I get to do what I do everyday. I learn ALL of my ss names and I tell them that they're important and that I care for them. #ESPEchat
A1: Building rapport with students helps all of my students, but the most important ones I find are with students that have been labelled i.e. behaviour #ESPEchat
This year I'm going to do it in survey monkey...and get my classroom teachers facilitate it in their classroom. Only letting 3rd-5th take part. Will also send home a parent survey asking some similar questions. #espechat
Yes please! Any examples you've used in the past? I usually set out my expectations and never really get a chance to know what my Ss may want/expect/like to do (esp. w/ new Ss) #espechat
A3: I do the name circle I got from @terridr99 . I add in with the littles that the same expression needs to be used. So if someone says it with a smile, you have to as well. #ESPEchat
A3) Thankful to see my Ss daily...so learning names doesn't take too long. Repetition, repetition...constantly calling Ss by name. Many younger grades wear name tags to #physed so that helps. #espechat
A3) Lucky to have been in same school for 9 years now. Only really need to learn new Ss and Kindergarten each year...just try to use their name as much as possible during class. Saying their names out loud helps me remember! #espechat
Good evening, colleagues! Keith from Ohio starting in a new school for my 11th year of teaching. I’ll have plenty of leeway to build a great program. #espechat
A3: Our system has their class pictures & names for attendance. I study these meticulously #espechat I also do some name games which I really try and memorize
A3) At the end of class, they are allowed to get water before getting into their class lines, this is when I ask the new ss what they're names are. Also, when they've lined up, I go down the line of each class, & ask for their names. Lastly, am & pm duty helps me too. #ESPEchat
A3) Take any Tag Game and make it the "Name" Tag Game. If you get out, come tell the teacher your name, and your back in. Helped me learn 400+ names real quick a few years ago. Kids never stop moving. #espechat
A3: I create class lists with their school picture and name. Then, I try to remember something that is important to each child...”likes baseball, has a little sister, plays tennis etc.” #espechat
Describing the destination of a relationship between an educator and a student. I pray my kids are inspired to become their better selves due to a relationship with an educator like @MrCsajko. #espechat
A3 To be completely and utterly honest, I don’t think I have a strategy. I guess when I hand them schedules, locker cards, locker combos, take roll I look at faces and names quite a bit. By week 4 I normally have everyone’s name down #ESPEchat
A3) I go to 5 schools weekly (1,200 students) so I make a seating chart for every class. Then I make smaller squads so we can work in small groups and learn names. #ESPEchat
A3) I will know 450 names by the end of week 3. Every time students come in they are greeted by a high five. If I don’t know their name, I first introduce myself and then if they don’t respond first ask their name. Put the face with the name. #espechat
A3 my Ss are assigned squads so I have them perform different locomotor skills and then I call their squads so when they line up in squad order I go through and say their names to help me learn them #espechat
When I run into Ss outside of school, I sometimes have trouble remembering their name...and don't want to make a mistake in front of their parents. "Sweetie" and "buddy" are usually my go to "names". #espechat
In reply to
@CoachWilliamsPE, @PhysEdApps, @smsandino
A3. I know most of the students names from prior years. Only need to work on transfer students and K has name tags for the first four weeks thanks to the classroom teachers. #ESPEchat Video of students saying names help too.
A3) I've got a knack for learning names - I usually have them all by the first full week. I usually say their name 3 times in a row & have Ss I know help me if I forget #espechat
A3) Starting my 10th year at the same school, so I only have to remember the new ss names 😁. I am on a.m. and p.m. duty everyday and I learn ss names through a.m. dropoffs and p.m. pickups too. #ESPEchat
One thing that I’ve found is it’s important for the teacher to share the long range plan with the students. This leads to interesting discussions about likes and dislikes and even ways to differentiate their learning. #espechat
A3 I see my students every other day. Each time I see them I pick out four students & practice their names for that time. next time I repeat those & pick three new students names. I am the only phys ed teacher in building and see every Ss we are a k-6 building . #espechat
Obie Wan aka @WalterReap in the house! If you are not following him, you should. I have learned more from this man about education than I have from any other mentor.#espechat Thanks for the kind words Walt
A3: I haven't had this problem for a while as I have been at the same school for several years, that and I'm great with names #ESPEchat I like to re-work cooperative groups using team shake app and games and by process of elimination to get the new younger Ss that I may not know
Q4) What is your character strength when building rapport with students? Do you have a weakness that you need to overcome? #ESPEchat (question by @PEbyMrE)
A4: I think my strength is that I genuinely care about each student. If I ask them about something it is because I really want to know, and not just to go through the motions. #ESPEchat
A4. I think it helps that I grew up in the area and understand the community and can relate to the students. Be honest and show that you care. #espechat
A4) I feel that I try to be a little goofy at times to lighten the mood. From then on it is just caring about each individual that comes into your classroom. Showing your students that you care for them will let them feel at ease and willing to open up. #espechat
A4 I would like to say I’m kind and caring towards my ss. When I ask th m questions I hear them out, listen when they’ve got a joke/question/story/concern, give them reassurance and options #ESPEchat
A4 my strength would be having a strong rapport with my Ss. They know that I truly care about them and that I want them to be successful not only in PE, but in whatever it is they choose to do #espechat
A4) I believe that knowing my ss names & showing them that I care by asking questions about themselves, is a strength. My weakness, trying to find something that can help me with my most challenging ss. Sometimes it's difficult to stay patient. #ESPEchat
My 2 assistants and I trade off leading warm ups, circulating to provide guidance and taking roll. More opportunities to meet/get to know ss.
#ESPEchat
A1) Building rapport with students is crucial to accomplish anything productive in #PhysEd#SecPhysEd. Building relationships and trust allows students to buy-in to your program. #espechat
A4) One thing - it always gets a laugh - is when someone wins a game, I will always misspeak, "And the weiners...*cough* I mean winners are..." - Never fails to get a chuckle or laugh (even Grade 8's) #espechat
a4 knowing the temperaments of students has been something I have gotten better at, and has been something that my staff has mentioned to me as well. #espechat
A4b I think I need to do a better job with ss who are reserved— when it’s like pulling teeth to have a conversation with. Furthermore, I’d like to connect with where they come from #ESPEchat
A4) Spending time w/ Ss is a big one too - coaching Ss I spend more time with certain Ss than their own parents - so there's a stronger rapport; I always make sure to spend time w/ ALL Ss #espechat
A4: Strength: knowing my curriculum, knowing my students
weakness: Though I like to use humour I know I can be too serious at times and the expectations I have for the learning. #espechat
A5: I think my rapport changes more over the years that just through a year. That is one thing I love about my job. I can have them up to 7 yrs. #ESPEchat
A5) I find by 4th grade I have to work harder to get them to step out of their comfort zones. As Ss become older, they become more self aware and begin to worry more about perceptions of others #espechat
A5: It should! It should grow differently for each child, but itrust should definitely be cultivating. I would imagine @CapnPetesPE is probably a testament to this question #espechat
A5) I think the unfortunate answer here is yes. I put all my trust and confidence in my students until they do something to lose it. Some Ss, lose it multiple times and its hard to connect with them the same. #espechat
@SaraWoodPE GREAT QUESTION!! Q5) Does your rapport change throughout the year(s) with your students? Why? Please explain. #ESPEchat (Question by @SaraWoodPE)
A5. You rapport has to go with the Ebb and Flow of instruction. It can depend on your unit of instruction or it can depend on events in society and events in the community. Ride the wave. #espechat
A5) If anything rapport gets stronger (not necessarily all the time with ever S); I've Ss say things they would never tell their homeroom T & explain they feel more comfortable telling me - TRUST is a HUGE part of rapport #espechat
A4) My strength is keeping the fun in learning (that includes being crazy, goofy). Weakness: with large classes I sometimes look too much at the big picture (whole group) and miss small things (maybe an individual who's struggling a bit). #ESPEchat
#ESPEChat A2- I make a point to try to remember who they are by using their name in convsersation with them! I also go down the line up line the first few weeks and high five and repeat their names. I’ve been known to give nicknames as well. #bmepe
A5) absolutely. It has even changed from year to year. The better I get to know my students and learn their likes and dislikes the better it gets. #espechat
A5 yes I believe it gets stronger as you continue to learn about your each of your Ss. You are able to watch them grow and really learn who they are as individuals #espechat
A5) My rapport definitely deepens as ss and I get to know each other, build trust and have shared experiences. It can be such a joyous journey as that happens.
#espechat
A5: From a developmental perspective, yes. Students change during the year (and that is to be expected and embraced - for example fifth graders become more reliant on peers instead of adults). However, my overall rapport with them remains the same. #espechat
But they also love when you revert back and remind them how much fun they used to have in class. I tell stories from previous years and it helps build relationships even deeper because I remember and they see that. #ESPEchat
#ESPEChat A4- my character strength is that I consider them ALL my kids. I truly love them and care for them. My one weakness would be I want them to get the content so badly that I have high expectations for them all. #bmepe
A5) I this it does, throughout the year we both get more comfortable with each other. I feel like I see it most with my K Ss, they come in scared and follow directions so well and by the end they have really come into their own and are comfortable #ESPEChat
This might sound weird, but I put them in charge of things or have them make decisions about class that put them in the spotlight or under a little pressure. Almost finding ways to force them to be at their best and on their game without them realizing it. #espechat
Build a culture of acceptance from day 1. Something I purposefully set out to do last yr & will continue this yr. Challenge is I might have a S in 1st grade & then not have them again until 5th. Obviously u can have deeper relationships with Ss u have more frequently #espechat
a5) I believe your rapport can change throughout the year(s). As Ss grow and the relationships evolve naturally things will change. As Ts we need to be ready for those ever changing moments #espechat
A6) Revist expectations, routines, hopes and dreams and continue to care and support for the students I have. I won’t give up on them and I will let them know that. #espechat
#ESPEchat A5- my rapport changes during the year and with students if I continue to have them year after year. I know what their strengths and weaknesses are too. #bmepe
A6: Just had an amazing training on resiliency and part of that was the importance of maintaining relationships not just building them. This can go sooo far to prevent the relationship deteriorating. #ESPEchat
A5 Oftentimes I believe it gets a little stronger as I become familiar with their habits and come in contact with their home life when an email is possibly sent home— moreso, with ss who may be challenging #ESPEchat
A6: I think it's important to be honest with Ss, especially those that I don't have a positive relationship with...and speak to them in a way that helps to create a positive environment. I try to listen so I can better see their point of view. Don't ever give up on a S #espechat
A6) Constantly be reflecting. Don't be afraid to ask the Ss what they think/feel and take those thoughts and feelings into consideration when teaching #espechat
Kate from CA chiming in late. See seeing the ideas. One thing to add in order to try and put the face and name together is have the students line up, then have them walk up and video tape them saying their name the way they want me to say it. Great for review! #espechat
Q6) If the rapport is not there, I try and talk to the classroom teacher/rotation specialists to see if they're is anything I can use to help motivate the student for my class. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. #ESPEchat
A5b There are ss that really take to your style and begin opening up and also want to share more about themselves with you. Another example of connections beginning to strengthen #ESPEchat
A6) I will change my groupings and take a smaller group that's struggling and work on additional teambuilding/shared experiences with them. We often change our groupings so it's not a negative strategy. It has worked as I can adapt activities to build success for them. #espechat
A6) Being honest, open, and letting Ss know if something isn't working. Revisit expectations from both sides, run through strengths/weaknesses, likes/dislikes, challenges and to be challenged #espechat
A5c I’ve also had the case where I’ve completely lost a ss due to a situation or situations and the connection breaks or is severely weakened despite your efforts to search for different strategies and reach out to parents/guardians #ESPEchat
A6 I think it has to do with what you are teaching. If students aren’t interested they’re not going toPay attention and get off task. I found that happening last year and I decided to change my program in a big way. I found that it helped #espechat
Highlighting teachable moments that present themself or pose hypothetical situations to Ss. Focus on Standards 4 and 5 in the beginning of the year almost exclusively will help steer our teaching boat in the right direction towards acceptance #espechat
Q6) I'll also tell the student that it's ok if they don't like PE & they're into music, art, or computers, but all I'm asking them to do is TRY. I tell them, "I'm not giving up on you." It may not make a difference, but I hope that my actions show them that I do care. #ESPEchat
Q7) Does your rapport with your students differ from the rapport you have with staff/admin/parents/community? Explain. #ESPEchat (Question from @SaraWoodPE)
A6) Im a huge fan of offering additional time to Ss if they are able to make it work, whether it be before school, my lunch, their lunch, planning, or after school. Relationships are a key entity to learning #espechat
A6 It’s like when an activity isn’t working. You need to switch up your game plan. Find out what makes their heart tick & run with it. Couldn’t tell you how much I’ve learned from written samples/assignments, inquiring about drawings, sought help from parents/guardians #ESPEchat
Exactly I have one paraprofessional in a K class with me and she always wants them to do everything perfect, finally I told her it’s about having fun and keeping them engaged those first weeks and that’s it #ESPEChat
A7: I find that I am way better at building rapport w Ss that w others. I have to make a conscious effort to build with staff, admin and community. Bring Your Parent to PE Week has worked wonders for that. #ESPEchat
That’s part of my A5c answer lol. I’ve been there, literally didn’t click with a ss for the entire year. Despite switching it up and reaching out to the parents. It ended up being labeled as a “personality clash.” #ESPEchat
A7) It is night and day for me. My Ss are the #1 responsibility. I do my job for them, to give them the opportunity to learn a healthy, active lifestyle as positive citizens. Rapport affects everything to do with what I want them to achieve #espechat
A5: I definitely find coaching helps with strengthening rapport. Being able to see the student in a different setting like an academic classroom really helped me build a better rapport #espechat
I will put a 1, 2 or 3 in pencil next to ss name on seating chart then go home an write up list of groups. If it's a struggling class, the groups are somewhat fluid. With 2 assistants, I can adapt groupings in this way. #ESPEchat
Demonstrating how to apologize does make a difference! #ESPEChat I've also given myself warnings for doing things the Ss are told not to do. They get a kick out of that.
A7) Jefferson elementary has one of the best staffs ever. I know I can seek advice on students or just life. Sharing a building with great educators makes work life easy. #ESPEchat
A7: Building rapport with staff and admin can be hard...many times I feel that I am on a island. Although I feel fully supported it's hard to have rapport with staff when our schedules are so different. #espechat
A7) I would say that it’s the same with everybody. I am just as wide open with my staff as I am with my students. I think it’s important to be YOU with everybody, Ss know so fast of your being fake. #ESPEChat
I hope everyone has a great school year #ESPEchat and #physed are your support systems. Don’t be afraid to share and don’t ever give up, especially on your students. Thank you @PhysEdApps for a great conversation tonight.
My former elementary school had a pretty robust behavior system with demerits and incentives. I would end up with demerits every class. Helped immensely with buy in, they got a kick out of it!! #ESPEChat
The littles are fun! I also love having those moments with kids who don't like to move learning to do something/achieving a goal for the first time! #ESPEChat
certainly we have to always be aware of the ever changing social landscape and student interactions. we are entrusted to be the safety mechanism in all of that - every day #espechat
A1: If S’s believe you care they will share what’s going on w/ you, they will respect the moments when they need to be redirected, & will put their heart into everything. when you can walk through a middle school and get hugs from ex S’s you know you’ve made an impact. #ESPEchat
