A1: Steve Jobs explained it best, βManagement is about persuading people to do things they do not want to do, while LEADERSHIP is about INSPIRING people to do things they never thought they could. β
#rethink_learning
A1: Googled Definition: the difference between leaders and managers is that leaders have people follow them while managers have people who work for them. #rethink_learning
A1: Geese (Leadership) represent sharing the lead when they fly. Buffalo (management) represents organizations functioning like a herd of buffalo who are loyal followers. Check out the book: Flight of the Buffalo https://t.co/ruPXAMkjM0#rethink_learning
There are so many aspects of leadership, but one important piece is guiding and developing a common vision with your team and working toward that vision each day together. #rethink_learning
A1: Leadership is visionary and management is operational. Ultimately, a leader charts the course as directed by the group. Leadership is flat and management is hierarchical. #rethink_learning
Perhaps both management and leadership are necessary, but just serve very distinct purposes. Clear boundaries between the two are helpful. #rethink_learning
A1. Management is telling people your expectations, leadership is showing it by example. Mgmt is micro-managing, leadership is allowing freedom for your trusted teachers space to experiment and flourish #rethink_learning
Yay! So excited to be here for #rethink_learning tonight!! Iβm Jodi from Atlanta. Instructional Coach by school year. BIE NF by summer. Learner always
A1: Leadership provides guidance and inspires people to take chances and promotes a culture of innovation. Management get asks permission. #rethink_learning
Compared to my (years ago) safari - leader is like the tour guide ... takes you where you imagine is awesome while making sure you get rest, food, good treatment. - manager is like venue-owner...is everything fixed and running well. #rethink_learning
Hi folks. This is Leslie from Atlanta. I'm looking forward to learning with you all on a topic near and dear to the heart of my org which grows teams of leaders across GA. For the Fourth, I love to eat homemade ice cream! #rethink_learning

A1: The idea of being a leader is showing the way and then getting out of the way. It's about building leaders. Thank you @mkkelly1966#rethink_learning

A1: leadership is about getting out of the way and allowing risk-taking; trusting those around you and giving them the freedom to explore and learn. #rethink_learning

Love to think about leadership as liberating untapped potential for greatness in others. This 2x2 from @GiANTWorldwide is a favorite. #rethink_learning

So agree. Often the functions of managers get short shrift in our rhetoric. But management skills are highly needed. Necessary but insufficient! Especially to achieve big audacious goals. #rethink_learning
It's funny how oftentimes high performers become managers, even though it's an entirely different skillset. Management requires lots of training and preparation. #rethink_learning
A2: Characteristics of a Good Leader https://t.co/VPjmR17m3l Article with 10 core traits: Honesty, Ability to delegate, Communication, Sense of humor, Confidence, Commitment, Positive, attitude, Creativity, Ability to inspire, Intuition #rethink_learning
A2: admit they don't have all the answers, willing to learn, allow risk taking, gives freedom, influences others not asserts power, asks Qs, seeks guidance/help/resources when needed #rethink_learning
A2 Great leaders are amazing listeners. They have the ability to foster great culture in an organization. Everything else comes from here #rethink_learning
A2 Jumping in late here, Samuel from Houston, TX key actions would be collaborative, innovative & willing to take risks for growth by thinking outside of the box, #UnLearn to #ReLearn#rethink_learning
A2: At #ISTE18@katiemartinedu spoke about relationships. A great leader needs to have relationships with those they lead. The questions we ask students are the same ones a school leader should ask of their staff. #rethink_learning
Leaders think many steps ahead. They understand that a clear vision with a clear action plan is necessary for complex change management. #rethink_learning
Actually @paul_emerich everyone needs to listen more - I'm learning "wait time" so I can not jump in when I think I need to talk. Listening is so important. #rethink_learning
A2: Great leaders do the following:
Learn
Empower
Adapt
Delegate
Engage
Reflect
Serve
via @E_Sheninger and @thomascmurray
in their excellent book, Learning Transformed
#rethink_learning
Great leaders know right when to step in. They know how to scaffold experiences for adult learners so they can grow in their own ways. #rethink_learning
A2: I heard the term humble narcissism that means a vision and focus to achieve but open enough to communicate hear the ideas of others to refine that vision #rethink_learning
A2 A great leader is an encourager, allowing others to grow and become the best version of themselves. A great leader helps nudge people to think outside the box and take risks. A great leader motivates and believes in their team members -plus a whole lot more. #rethink_learning
Good leaders know how to create environments where professional learning becomes personal through learner agency and building decision-making skills. #rethink_learning
A2: they inspire others to reach their full potential. They allow for flexibility. They provide spaces and time for collaborative work. #rethink_learning
A@ lead: with, not over; hear, not demand; consider, not dismiss; gathers input, not mandates; reflects with; not orders to; celebrates with, not loyalty awards; shares credit; not powers over; inspires, not stifles #rethink_learning
Yes, relationships are so important for building culture. So glad you referenced @katiemartinedu who wrote a wonderful book and did a great keynote at #ISTE18#rethink_learning
A2: At #ISTE18@katiemartinedu spoke about relationships. A great leader needs to have relationships with those they lead. The questions we ask students are the same ones a school leader should ask of their staff. #rethink_learning
It's so hard. I struggle with it constantly. It's like I get a rush of butterflies in my stomach. I have to practice a lot of mindfulness and take deep breaths constantly. #rethink_learning
Agree but a different type of prep - and role - than leadership. Managers work to reduce uncertainty. They create clarity. Leaders often have to live and rest in uncertainty especially when taking on adaptive challenges. I love Pema Chodron's thoughts on this. #rethink_learning
A2: I heard the term humble narcissism that means a vision and focus to achieve but open enough to communicate hear the ideas of others to refine that vision #rethink_learning
Good leaders believe that everyone is a leader in their own capacity, and that there are many different ways to lead. There is no line between 'leaders' and 'non-leaders' #rethink_learning
A2 Great leaders create thriving schools by focusing on strengths development and wellbeing of those they lead. Wellbeing matters in performance. #rethink_learning
I think we all struggle with this, Paul. We need to cultivate the act of listening in order to hear the other person, not to focus on responding :) #rethink_learning
I'm going to share 3 things to be a better leader in 3 separate tweets. A3: (#1) Find 2-4 leaders you admire then read their blogs/articles, attend their presentations, and connect with them on social media. #rethink_learning
A3: (#2) Figure out who you are and maybe what others think of you. #DefineYourWhy Practice the things that make you uncomfortable so you can become a better writer, presenter, and self-confident as a leader. #rethink_learning
A3: a) continue to build relationships and get to know the ppl in the building, whether they are adults or children. b) Listen c) appreciate, d) read, e) connect/network with leaders you admire and f) learn from your mistakes. #rethink_learning
A3: (#3) Learn something new every day. Push yourself to find new trends, explore one trend online, gather and curate resources around that trend, and share what you discovered with your PLN. #rethink_learning
A3: Be intentional about being inclusive, be dependable by following through, and delegate effectively so others feel they have ownership in the direction the group is going. #rethink_learning
A3: 1. wait time. 2. encourage more collaboration and sharing [wait for even more] 3. return sooner to reflection together β Good leadership is a dance. #rethink_learning
A3: push others to be a leader and cultivate that talent...I owe a lot to one of my former principals who saw something in me I didn't and pushed me towards leadership..I will forever be grateful! #rethink_learning
A3: I'm reinventing me and find that I need to do that often. It is uncomfortable, but so rewarding when I found out that I can do something that I resisted/procrastinated about and found ways to not do it. I keep a gratitude jar just for those occasions. #rethink_learning
A3 Every leaders needs an intentional strengths and wellbeing framework and practice for their district. It must move beyond platitudes and motivational quotes. #rethink_learning
A3:
1) Expose my Vulnerability @TaraMartinEDU#REALedu
2) Continue to learn and provide those opportunities to others
3) Search for and recognize the amazing things happening around me.

Constantly asking myself what is MY role in contributing to where we are, especially stuck points. Looking not at what others are doing or not doing, but asking how MY actions create/hinder conditions for success. #rethink_learning #[wo]maninthemirror
I want to take video of me in a team meeting and really deconstruct how my body language, facial expressions convey active listening...or not. #rethink_learning
