Hi! I'm Hannah Hale. I'm new to Twitter chats and a Pre-Service teacher in Tennessee.
A3) In my placement, we use Google classroom -- a great place Ss and teachers can have all class content and grades online. Ss are made accountable and teachers can manage their work #nt2t
A1: Some great techniques I have recently learned are Kounin's Preventative General Techniques! Always keep those eyes on the back of your head open! #withitness#gccedu#EDPSYCHO#NT2t
Good morning, #NT2t! Hannah Turk, former 1st grade T in northern VA here! Super excited to hear everyone's experiences and resources for best practice in different areas!
A1) I am very interested to see answers for this question. During Practicum, my teacher "shushed" the students. I didn't find that effective. In studying, I've heard about turning lights off or having students clap once if they hear you. #nt2t
I have a hashtag for my world history courses but my students haven't used it in that way so far. I tweet out extra resources to them that I think they might find interesting. #nt2t
Well said. As a student, I used to appreciate teachers who cared enough to give me privacy while addressing issues. And it's always great when teachers don't hold grudges against students for something they once did.
#Nt2T
A1 To manage behavior it is important to keep your composure & stay off the emotional side of things When Ts get emotional they lose the situational control #nt2t
Morning, #nt2t. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in Colorado. A1 Stephen Covey's advice about first seeking to understand then to be understood qualifies as an effective practice. In other words, listen/observe/notice/describe, before jumping to judgment.
I usually go the center of the room where most of them can see me and say still, with a patient face on. Some catch on and start telling the others to be quiet. #NT2t
A1: Best way - try to understand, ask for reasons. Behavior problems are relationship problems. So you need a lot of empathy for your students. You never know what they are in. Be careful and sensitive. #NT2t
A1) Agree w/ what others have said about speaking to S privately & developing positive relationships w/ Ss. It's also important to remember that Ss are learning behavior as well as content. Use these as teaching opportunities. #nt2t
A1: I think it's called redemptive discipline, where the end goal is for a student to be welcomed back into a community after learning from their mistake, and being better for it. No S should feel ostracized from a childish mistake. #NT2t
A1b) I have a key word and tone that I only use when I want attention.
If that doesn't work I make Ss stand up which they know is a rest and then they sit down and we go back to what is expected #nt2t

A1a When managing behavior focus on changing the behavior When Ts focus on the behavior, not the child, solutions can usually be developed collaboratively #nt2t
Restorative justice, positive behavior intervention support, many names for similar purposes: Cultivate self-awareness to change behavior in positively over time rather than simply levy consequences that punish & reinforce resentment. #nt2t
A2 I'm sorry, this response was actually for Q2! In my placement, we use Google classroom -- a great place Ss and teachers can have all class content and grades online. Ss are made accountable and teachers can manage their work #nt2t
A1: The biggest shift in mindset I've learned from being in the classroom vs. being a parent is WHY am I 'disciplining'? Is it for me to keep control, or to grow my Ss to be better people and learn life skills? #NT2t
A2) Backward design. Think about what you want Ss to know and be able to do. What technology(ies) will allow them to go deeper with that, collaborative with each other, and share their work w/ authentic audience. #nt2t
So true. Everyone told me that being a parent would change how I teach and how I view teaching, but I never knew how much, and how quickly (only 10 months)! #NT2t
A2) Backward design. Think about what you want Ss to know and be able to do. What technology(ies) will allow them to go deeper with that, collaborative with each other, and share their work w/ authentic audience. #nt2t
A2: Incorporating ClassCrafts, ClassDojo, and even Planboard in to your classroom are great ways to integrate technology and improve motivation in the classroom! #gccedu#nt2t
A2 Integrate technology when it will make the learning experience better for Ss I feel Ts often use tech, just to use tech, & the human element of class is removed #nt2t
A2 I'm also in a class for the integration of technology in the classroom, and I've learned about a lot of student response sites, such as Socrative and Kahoot. Do any of you have any experience with these in the classroom? #nt2t
Hey #edcampnova! If you get a chance, pop over to #nt2t and share your best practices for all different topics! Pre-Ts @KyleeMclafferty and @Lauren__Bosco guest-modding today...give them a tweet!
Great to ask these questions. And it’s hard to think about them in the heat of the moment. Also: Why is this child not meeting my expectations—is it really misbehaving or is it a learning situation? #nt2t
A1: The biggest shift in mindset I've learned from being in the classroom vs. being a parent is WHY am I 'disciplining'? Is it for me to keep control, or to grow my Ss to be better people and learn life skills? #NT2t
At #edcampgcc we did an escape room with the theme of technology is taking over your classroom! We didn't escape (unfortunately) but we did learn that tech is a tool and not a teacher. #NT2t
A2 Echoing Chris's comment, worthy practices in tech integration (for most learning settings) involve starting with purposes that *aren't* tech driven. Tech is means to other, loftier ends. #nt2t
A2) Backward design. Think about what you want Ss to know and be able to do. What technology(ies) will allow them to go deeper with that, collaborative with each other, and share their work w/ authentic audience. #nt2t
A2. Anything Google. Easy collaboration between Ss and T to S. @flipgrid is awesome for increasing S voice and for assessing without "grading" But all tech use should be for S benefit not just for tech sake. #nt2t
My brother was just telling me about a class he has that is TV video production, which could be an amazing use of tech, but it is not monitored well so they usually just play games on the computers. #nt2t
My school's online courses are self-paced and asynchronous. Designed world history course so Ss can still learn from each other to some extent through sharing some work via Padlet walls & using commenting feature in GDocs, Slides, etc. #nt2t
In matters of tech integration, whether w/learning groups or on more personal scales, I recommend read I just finished: _Bored and Brilliant_ (about potential consequences of device use & more mindful integration). https://t.co/FLaEeyWIoL#nt2t
Ugh. I hear some parents of HS Ss in our local district complain about Ss using school laptops/phones inappropriately during class. My son's in 8th gr & they can use their iPads to play games, listen to music, etc. if they get done w/ work early. Mixed feelings about that. #nt2t

Establish shared expectations w/students about how class should operate & what should happen when members fail to live up to those standards. Develop collaboratively, rather than impose onerously. #nt2t

With secondary Ss, I would have them establish acceptable use practices for the class. Revisit as needed. Also, T needs to monitor - be up and moving around. Work with IT folks in school/district if needed. #nt2t
At my high school kids were on their phones all of the time. I think we should have been taught to use them as a resource instead of just ignoring the fact that we had them. #nt2t
A3: When engaging my future students I hope to be able to use fun, interactive ways that keep them interested. Trying my best to align my lessons with the Danielson Framework should be useful as well. #nt2t#gccedu
A3 Lately, I've been learning about universal design for learning (UDL), which cultivates a mindset geared towards engaging all students. Here's a taste: https://t.co/XhEklsMMIP#nt2t
Totally agree. I hear from parents in our local district who just want phones and devices banned from school b/c their kids have trouble managing their use. However, that seems to take away the opportunity to help students develop self-regulation skills. #nt2t
a3a Engaging Ss starts w/the T & S relationship Ss will engage in almost anything if they trust & know their T is looking out for their best interest #nt2t
A3) I just did a lesson on choice in my class for The Giver. I started the lesson with students listing 3 choices they made and one time they didn't have a choice. Then we did a job assignment activity with jobs today before we analyzed texts for the significance of choice #nt2t
The "Why Question Factor" is one of the biggest energy pieces in a classroom Ss need to know the why they are doing something & Ts need to put the why ? on Ss insted of answering ?s for Ss #nt2t
Great point; I love involving my students through their feedback, input, and even criticism of tech use in the classroom. I can take it, and provides incredible buy-in #nt2t

This seems obvious but I also think about the things we learned without knowing why... Is there research behind this? (Besides the fact that I think it's important to know why.) #nt2t
A4 It starts at your door Greet w/a smile, fist bump, high 5 as they enter As them how their weekend was on a Monday From there Ss will see you are here for them, not just teaching a content #nt2t

Thinking about mindsets, I imagine the more one lands in situations where one's mindset feels fixed, getting a grip on purpose may help motivate learning. When growth mindset prevails, learners can feel intrinsic motivation even when purpose remains murky. #nt2t
A4: Check in with your Ss and know how they are doing in your class. Be sure to be on the look out for changes in behavior and care about them and ask them what is wrong. #nt2t#gccedu
I try to go on the offensive with this. I go out of my way to explain why certain content/skills are important and I challenge my students to keep asking “why.” If I cant explain why it’s important, I probably shouldn’t be teaching it. Would love to use more research, too #nt2t
A big reason why I believe blanket negative statements about tech are off-base. Devices shouldn't be seen as accommodations for some and distractions for others. Make them part of the learning experience for everyone. #UDL#UDLchat#digcit#edtechchat#nt2t

Folks in this district might like to explore the book _Bored & Brilliant_, Chris. Side note: Prohibition has a pretty poor track record throughout history :) #nt2t
This should also work the other way around. Teachers need to evaluate themselves as well. Surveying students and being open to heir feedback fosters genuine relationships. #Nt2T
Probably a combination of both. :D But having that one 'student' that you love so much and you DO spend so much time with (so, so much time) gives the perspective that can transfer to the classroom and your non-biological children. #NT2t
I love the comment about if I can't explain why it is important, I probably shouldn't be teaching it. This is something more and more ts should be saying! #nt2t

It takes a little while, but now they offer hellos to me before I can greet them, they also say goodbye at end of class A classroom needs to have that family feel #nt2t
A4) Greet them when they come into your classroom, be approachable, SMILE, listen when they speak (and to their nonverbal cues), be enthusiastic about what you teach and about teaching them. #nt2t

A4 cont) Now that I teach online and don't have live sessions w/ my Ss, I try to share information about myself and inject some humor into my interactions with them. Have made some really great connections w/ Ss without talking to them traditionally. :) #nt2t
OK, so I might not know why, but I sure am curious about it and would love to learn more!
I know many discoveries had a lot to do with whim and curiosity. Did Edison stop and say, "Why am I doing this?" #nt2t
Thinking about mindsets, I imagine the more one lands in situations where one's mindset feels fixed, getting a grip on purpose may help motivate learning. When growth mindset prevails, learners can feel intrinsic motivation even when purpose remains murky. #nt2t
One quality I appreciated in the book is tracing middle grounds, including challenges to temporarily prohibit aspects of tech use to see what that's like and then re-engage more purposefully as opposed to out of less productive habits. #nt2t
Lisening to students also matters. Few students try and open up to teachers. It's important to make them feel welcome. That send positive signals to the others as well. #Nt2T
To form deep relationships with Ss you have to get to know one another. It's crucial that you model this, allow them to get to know you on the first day of school. On the first day, let them know you care #nt2t
YES!! My favorite questions (and I share these w/ students in the hopes that they ask them, too) are SO WHAT? and WHO CARES? If you don't have good answers for these, time to go back to the drawing board. And, no, "because it's on the state test" isn't a good enough answer. #nt2t
Our school collects cell phones in the morning and then returns them at the end of the day. Students have plenty of tech to use throughout the day (Chromebooks, iMacs, etc). I think our kids actually interact more with each other in person without their phones. #nt2t

A5: Integrating students with special needs requires patience. As teachers we need to make sure our Ss know our classroom is safe space where everyone is respected and valued. #gccedu#nt2t
That's one of the things I worry is being lost. I think my son watches videos on his iPad during lunch sometimes. I encourage him to actually interact with his friends and, you know, TALK! #nt2t

I don't know! What I do know is that when I notice what students are reading or their body language or what they're talking about, and I engage them gently ("How's the book?" "You look happy today." "Sounds like an important game..."), worthwhile moments ensue. #nt2t
A5a I use table captains to help run my sci class I have used Sped Ss ELL Ss & Ss who are always disengaged Leadership does wonders for the confidence of a child #nt2t
A5: The best thing I ever heard was 'When you do something for someone that they can do for themselves, you disable them'. Giving Ss opportunities to succeed (or fail!) is such an important part of teaching! #NT2t
I used to be so wary of highlighting that some students have special needs. When I learned to open the discussion with other students, students themselves started to share how they can help each other #nt2t
Don't enable, show Ss how they need to take control of their learning Special needs Ss just need more strategies to have in their tool box They don't need Ts doing it for them #nt2t
Even as I see the upside here, I fret about school's role as surrogate short circuiting other ways to help young learners develop stronger self-awareness & control through supported practice. #nt2t

Don't know about unstructured being inherently dangerous but yes to the monitored part... perhaps "guided exploration"? Provide questions to find answers to; give it a purpose. But also help them learn self-monitoring/time management behaviors right there in school. #digcit#nt2t

Time to head out and really dive in to #edcampnova here! A million thanks to everyone for participating in #nt2t this morning with some AWESOME ideas and resources! Great job, @KyleeMclafferty and @Lauren__Bosco!
Agreed. And don't over do it. Sometimes we don't let them thrive on their own because we get this long report on what they struggle with. Learn their strengths and teach towards those too. #nt2t
A5) Work closely with their teacher of record to make sure you understand the accommodations and needs of your students. Be open to recognition that some accommodations make sense for everyone. #nt2t
Wow I love this. I have been working on a project with adults with special needs in the community to build a bench, and it blows my mind how much they know and can do that we often just assume they can't. #nt2t
A5: The best thing I ever heard was 'When you do something for someone that they can do for themselves, you disable them'. Giving Ss opportunities to succeed (or fail!) is such an important part of teaching! #NT2t
Dangerous in a way toward lack of learning, not physical danger Probably used the wrong word there...but then again I have seen my face as a screen save on a chromebook & that did not go over well #nt2t

A5 It's not a practice of mine yet, but recent learning about universal design for learning (UDL) has me thinking about substituting the noun variability for disability. Despite old saw about sticks & stone, our word choice matters. #nt2t
Yesterday we did a case study of a student with autism, and coming in I only found six strengths. After discussing with peers, we were able to list 15. All Ss have strengths. We have to be the ones willing to look for them. #nt2t
That is a wonderful quote. So true. Now is the time for students to fail/succeed with less serious consequences. Providing that space for them is so important. #nt2t
That's a good question. I know I have pushed questioning more and more the longer I teach. Once Ss get to HS, it seems they are more focused on the answers rather than questioning. I think questioning is key to lifelong learning. #nt2t

A5 Individualized instruction is always best for sped kiddos. However, modifications to traditional note taking, hands on activities, and mediated scaffolding will help them along with all other ss #nt2t
Thanks so much for the great questions this morning! Off to figure out why the exams for one of our courses aren't in the online proctoring system. Whee! :) #nt2t
#nt2t thank you so much for joining @KyleeMclafferty and I this morning! There were such great conversations and awesome ideas shared. What a great way to start a Saturday morning 😊
Thank you so much for joining us this week! We were so honored to be able guest moderate this morning!
This week's challenge: try out one of the techniques discussed this morning and let us know how it goes! #nt2t
