Hey #122edchat! This is Michael A. in Chicago. @SmartLab_tweets#STEM Facilitator. So happy to have @RealMrsBentley taking the lead this evening! My favorite Halloween costume from childhood was the year that I dressed up as Wayne Gretzky from the @EdmontonOilers. He was my hero.
Hey #122edchat. Scott from Winchester VA checking in via tweetdeck. I am a HS ITC and am the founder of #fcpslearn which meets Tuesdays at 8:30 pm ET. My favorite Halloween costume from childhood was a tiger costume that my mom made.
Knock, Knock! Who's there?
It's Jen! I'm from Rhode Island. Middle School - Inquiring Minds Teacher.
I loved being a clown (not the scary kind) when I was 7 (I think). My mom made the costume and it was so wonderful. #122edchat
A2: #122edchat you're really making me think tonight. I've got lots of tricks up my sleeve for my old position but am feeling like I don't have any new treats to share. I'll get there. I did ask my students on Day 1 to complete the sentence. "You should know ________ about me."
Hey, Everyone! Stella from KY here. I am an Instructional Technology Coordinator. My favorite costume from childhood was probably the pink power ranger. #122edchat
Hello All, Steph Dill elementary SPED T in Colorado. As a kid I went as a die. My senior yr of HS I was Olive Oil. Loved both of those costumes. #122edchat
Hi! And happy Halloween to you too! I’m Kate from Florida and my favorite costume was Wilma flintstone that I sewed all by myself in 8th grade...my friend went as Betty Rubble #122edchat
Vanessa Heller from Southern CA: #inquiry#pbl & #GiftedEd trainer, middle school humanities T, ELA Dept. Chair, Tech Innovator, Peer Coach. Fave costume = Carmen Miranda. I played Ding Dong Ditch & left trail of hot pink feathers all over the neighborhood (I was 30!) #122edchat
Hi everyone, MaryRose, science teacher from NY. We didn't have halloween costumes as children. Moved to USA when we were young and our parents didn't know much about the culture. But the most memorable halloween was, #122edchat
A1: Tough Question. Masks. I'm not sure that I wear many at this point. In spending more time engaging my Ss in self-reflection, mindfulness, and sending gratitude; I am more open and honest with myself and my students.
#122edchat
Hi all! Today I dressed up as a ink dinosaur and did the “Hokey Pokey” through the halls. 2 questions. 1, if you were to see a dinosaur, what would you want to see it do, and 2, guess how many batteries I went through.... oh, I teach 6th grade science in PA! #122edchat
Hi #122edchat! Noel, Secondary ELA Teacher, North Carolina. My favorite costume was Snow White. When I was in charge of Haunted Huss, it helped the youngest kids feel less afraid to have Snow White there.
Putting my little sister in a onesie pjs and putting calamine lotion all over her face and lipstick from my mom on her cheeks, dressing her up as a clown so we could actually go trick or treating in our building in NYC with a "costume" #122edchat
A1 Hmm, I do not enjoy wearing masks (I am who I am) and I have a terrible time hiding my emotions - my face betrays me every time. Others would like me to wear a muzzle, though, lol. #122edchat
Hahahaha! Awesome! So happy to have you with us from Florida. Next week we have @TatMaylor and @MattRay30 from #ecsdfl hosting #122edchat. Spoiler alert.
In reply to
@heARTISTatWORK, @TatMaylor, @MattRay30
A1 - my mask is called the “mask of positivity!” It helps others be happy and inspires our students. Plus, it’s also a great feel good mask to wear. Never gets old. #122edchat
A1. I wear a different mask for every class. Each has its own challenges and I must approach them individually. My favorite is CLOWN! Might as well have fun. #122edchat
A1: This is tough, but my mask is "happy". Most days that is my normal front, but life gets in the way on occasion so I gotta act. It makes people feel at ease & more comfortable being at school. When we smile, laugh, and are open, it makes people want to participate. #122edchat
My mask is “the real me” What you see is what you get...for too many years I did wear a “mask” to “fit in” and now I’d rather be me and stand out! #122edchat
A1: I love pretending to be innocent, like I don’t have any shenanigans up my sleeve. Because let’s face it. I am never innocent. But it’s fun to pretend and then drop the shenanigans -and nobody ever sees it coming... #122edchat
Ray, K-8 Math Coach from RI. Just getting off of my feet now! Long night.
Join me for #edChatRI this Sunday at 8pm EST with special guest @ATMNEmath Conference brought to you by @rimtamath#122edchat
A1: Completed 45 Revolutions around the Sun this month and have come to the point of no mask anymore. Want to be true to myself and want others to see my truth. So unveiling of masks is where I am today and hope to stay...Too deep? heavy? Sorry, it's my truth #122edchat
A2: #122edchat I asked my kiddos on Day 1 to share with me something that they wanted me to know about them.
I'm feeling like I'm out of treats in this new teaching position but have no fear, soon I'll have more treats than I know what to do with. #keepbelieving
A1. We all wear several masks in life, I prefer taking the mask off and just being myself! Why should we pretend to be someone were not in life! #122edchat
Sometimes I feel like being a teacher is sometimes putting a mask on and going into work every day. You have to be ON for your students. Tough to do day in and day out. #122edchat
A1: I really love wearing the Principal mask where you can always work to make the day better for students, staff and parents everyday in many different ways. #122edchat
A2: A really cool tool that I have been showing Ts is @DiscoveryEd studio. It has been working great in the classes I have introduced it to. #122edchat
Q2-We are knocking at your classroom door looking for an educational treat. Share with us your favorite treat. What is a go to fun activity you like to do every year? #122edchat
A2: When I taught science, I loved doing the zombie apocalypse lab, where students were the victims of a sudden breakout. Used phenolphthalein as an indicator to trace back to Patient Zero! #122edchat
A2 Right after we finish reading A Long Walk to Water, kids carry a heavy jug full of water - all day, everywhere they go in school > simulates life of female main character (Sudanese female) who fetches water day in/day out with no access to education because of this. #122edchat
A2: We start each quarter w/our new Ss discussing scenarios and doing team building activities to develop relationships and foster good communication and listening skills. These activities get Ss out of their comfort zones and interacting w/others out of their circle. #122edchat
A2: I always love playing a review game I call Knockout - each team starts with 10 X's and as they get questions correct they can take 2 X's from other teams - most X's at the end wins - this year I have loved doing Breakouts with the kiddos! #122edchat
Q2-We are knocking at your classroom door looking for an educational treat. Share with us your favorite treat. What is a go to fun activity you like to do every year? #122edchat
But sometimes, don't you get energy from being in the classroom? When I pull out whatever energy I have, and give it to the kids, they give it back ten fold. I hope you get this too.
A2: @breakoutEDU and @GooseChase- did one today and it was amazing! The ss got so many staff members to be involved! My once and done activities- Rube Goldberg, Rice Krispie treats, dry ice day, #122edchat
A2 - oh Boy!! This is tough. I’m a HPE teacher who promotes healthy choices. I do bring in Jelly Beans as a challenge for students. Love hard pretzels though. Favorite activity is pass the pos. #122edchat
A3: #122edchat Yes. An average person can make it through; if the average person can juggle well! I'm convinced that my Ss are learning skills that won't be visible to me this semester but they will be able to use in their other classes and personal interests. #keepongoing
A2- Using Twilight Zone episodes to teach and reinforce plot. They have all the parts of plot in every episode. Thanks to my sister @MrsAtkus for letting me steal that idea. #122edchat
Game: Whichever student writes down the lowest natural number that nobody else writes down......wins. Do several iterations of the game. Track the winning number. Let students see the tracking. Watch the strategies evolve. #122edchat
A2. We always make some type of playdough in the classroom and the students help in preparing it. Afterwards, they use it to create, design and mold things into shapes! #122edchat
A2: I’m not in the CR now, but I loved having my Ss create their own virtual field trips with #GoogleMaps and #GoogleEarth. They then became environmental field guides, taking their audience to locations around the world in different habitats using #screencastify! #122edchat
A2: I love acting out Shakespeare's plays with the kids. We are silly, tragic and overly dramatic. We laugh and have fun. No app needed--just imagination and daring. #122edchat
Q2-We are knocking at your classroom door looking for an educational treat. Share with us your favorite treat. What is a go to fun activity you like to do every year? #122edchat
A2: I really miss being in the classroom because I loved a great game of “Simon Says” when a movement break was needed. I also enjoy performing my “invisible baton” routine to keep the fun when I visit classrooms that need a break. #122edchat
Q2-We are knocking at your classroom door looking for an educational treat. Share with us your favorite treat. What is a go to fun activity you like to do every year? #122edchat
A2: Have students become news anchors for your content! They can use @screencastify, make a cheap back drop with $1 table cloths, have students be creative! Works for any subject. #122edchat
Q2-We are knocking at your classroom door looking for an educational treat. Share with us your favorite treat. What is a go to fun activity you like to do every year? #122edchat
A1: I prefer a transparent mask - I want to be seen as the real me. I like to mess wit my kids though - when they ask me what I'll dress up as for Halloween, I tell them that Halloween is when I take my mask off. 😜 #122edchat
A3 My classroom is more of a fun house but regardless, no giving up allowed! If a kid is scared, I help them overcome their fears and monsters are merely obstacles to break through. #122edchat
A2: Spending time on learning something where everyone(inc me) have steep learning curves. This year we are ALL going to learn a new platform for designing( @scratch@AutoCAD@adskFusion360 etc. It's going to be challenging but worth it in the end. #122edchat
A3: Simply put, YES, because I would not let them quit. My philosophy is this: I will run alongside of you, cheering you on, carrying you, if necessary, to ensure that you will finish the race and be crowned champion. #122edchat
A3: Absolutely! We have a keeping trying until we master it mentality in my classroom! Messing up just gets us one step closer to getting it right! #122edchat
A3: Yes !! Because as haunted as it may be I am there to reassure them everythingwill be ok. I’m there for them thru to the end, always, thru thick and thin...they’d have the reassurance to keep going #122edchat
A3: huh. Interesting question. My content would be the haunted house. I’d be fired if I had to run it like a haunted house. I’d keep turning on lights and warning the ss when they were about to be scared. Or I would be in the corner, talking a ss through the fear #122edchat
A3: I’m an advocate and cheerleader for all students! I like to challenge them in a way that helps them grow. The individual might have a few struggles, but they would leave with an idea of what it feels like to have someone believe in them. #122edchat
A3: I think so. I love to build the suspense and wonder and keep things fun along the way. You really need to know know when to amp it up when people need a boost to keep going. #122edchat
A3: Everyone would make it through. Personalized learning would help each and everyone make it out, maybe at different paces but still meet their goal of getting out. #122edchat
#122edchat A2: At the end of some classes, we do some trivia questions. It opens up a lot of conversations about a variety of topics. I also like to scour the news for random news. Last week we learned about the discovery of the “headless chicken monster” in Antarctica.
A2 On Halloween, I love to have Ss look at the Zombie Readiness page on @CDCgov website. We then do a few activities from their Educator Guide. #122edchat
A2 I always enjoy integrating content with @starwars! I would tell my Ss they are trying to defeat the Dark Side which was overcoming their fear of tests. They had to use the Force to pass! #122edchat
A3: I hope so! My classroom is set up much differently than the traditional classroom so at first it can be scary, but I have a lot of procedures in place to help them navigate through. #122edchat
A3- It depends on the day. If there's a full moon NOWAY, but I think I have a well oiled machine that someone could come in make it through. I feel like the class runs itself pretty well. Now teaching my content that's a different story. #122edchat
A2 One of the most fun activities of the year is our annual International Festival. Great food, music, dancing. Celebrating culture and diversity as a community. #122edchat
A3: 100%. We are in it together is my motto. I even involved my parents. We are there for each other and we push each other to work with & supporting each other. When they forget to, I remind them gently. We are a TEAM, UNIT, FAMILY! #mamabear cares for all her cubs. #122edchat
A2 I always enjoyed having ss identify birds by song. I still have ss who have graduated come up to me and say they can still identify birds by song based on the lesson they learned in 7th grade science class! That always makes me so happy! https://t.co/Mwe4k5Qwj5#122edchat
Q4-You're bobbing for apples in education. You pull out the apple with your favorite research based program or class structure. What would be that apple and give us a little information? #122edchat
#122edchat A3: That’s the goal to make it out successfully and with gained knowledge and skills. The haunted house has sections with a lot of scaffolding and supports in place.
A2: As an English teacher, I always enjoyed having students create a "Most Dangerous Game" game. not so long ago, it was a board game. Now it's a video game. Creepy fun, especially around Halloween. #122edchat
A3 Absolutely everyone would make it. There is no quitting or giving up allowed in my class. Different results, different amounts of production but no giving up. #122edchat
Q4-You're bobbing for apples in education. You pull out the apple with your favorite research based program or class structure. What would be that apple and give us a little information? #122edchat
YES! Podcasting is awesome! I miss getting to do this myself. Also love watching Ss reflect using @flipgrid in Lab activities. Total game changer in reflection. #122edchat
A4: #122edchat I hope I get a granny smith apple. They are always so SOUR!
Currently increasing S engagement through more choice and voice! Ss are recognizing when their team members are not following contract & working through solutions without my help! #personalizedlearning
A4: Flipped classroom, student-led instruction. There is nothing more rewarding than watching students successfully teach and learn from each other. #122edchat
A3: Yes! They would make it through because Snow White is walking beside them. They know if she can make it through, they can too. Plus, she will eat the apple so they are safe. :) #122edchat
A4 - The learning strategies:
-retrieval practice
-spaced practice
-interleaving
-dual coding
-ellaboration
-concrete examples
Check out @AceThatTest for more info on all of the evidence-informed strategies. :)
#122edchat
A4: Hands down it would be Mastery Learning! My class follows a self paced mastery learning framework & it allows students to work at their own pace (within parameters). Eliminates frustration & helps each child get what they need, when they need it. #122edchat
A4: Our environment is quite unique where students lead the investigation at each engagement. Their questions open avenues of discussion and discovery during each learning activity. When they solve their problems, on their own, their confidence skyrockets. #122edchat
Q4-You're bobbing for apples in education. You pull out the apple with your favorite research based program or class structure. What would be that apple and give us a little information? #122edchat
A3 Absolutely everyone would make it. There is no quitting or giving up allowed in my class. Different results, different amounts of production but no giving up. #122edchat
A4. Class structure: I used to desire a quiet classroom. I am growing to appreciate a noisy classroom. Students working together on projects. Collaboration should be noisy! (kinda) #122edchat
My key research-based practice: feedback and continual re-assessment before issuing grades. Keep the cycle of learning going as long as possible.
As soon as you close the door on re-assessment, you close the door on hope, growth, and learning. Don't do it. #122edchat
A4 - I’d pull out a Flipgrid video and have them do a google reflection on what they watched. Finish with a partner game of war to see who gets the most answers right. Of course they’d have to do a closure of Rock Paper Scissors before leaving. #122edchat
Yes I love this! Sometimes I have to group kids with different learning styles and abilities so love to have each student take the lead depending on their strengths. #122edchat
A4: Flipped classroom, student-led instruction. There is nothing more rewarding than watching students successfully teach and learn from each other. #122edchat
A4- I'm a huge fan of Questioning the Author. This is a great tool for looking at Craft and Structure. Isabel Beck has done extensive research and developed many valuable tools for educators. #122edchat
A3. My end goal is to have Ss make it through the challenges, try new things, utilizing skill to solve problems. It takes multiple attempts! Ss learn to believe in themselves! Gain confidence to succeed and problem solve! #122edchat
A3 Yes they would all make it out, because I encourage creative thinking and offer so many choices adaptations and modifications everyone would make it out safely! Some would want to go back and try a different way!#122edchat
A4: Power of revision/redo. Ss learn better when they correct & learn from their mistakes. Feedback during the process not @ the end on product. Makes a world of difference how Ss receive & act on the feedback. Formative assessments, low stakes, low stress, high reward. #122edchat
A4: My favorite is when students teach each other content. They can use whatever app, program or creative idea they want to use---it all has the same end result. We learn deeper when we teach others, and kids learn the best from their peers. #122edchat
Q5- The Monster Mash is a Halloween favorite, if you were to pick/create a theme song for your career in education what would it be? Give us a line from the chorus.
#122edchat
A5: #122edchat
I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
~Michael Jackson
Man in the Mirror
A5: "Never Face Defeat" by No Innocent Victim. Best line, "I might get knocked down but I'm winning the war." Each day we struggle to make gains and influence those we lead. Some days are better than others, but in the end, WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE. #122edchat
You gotta check them both out.... The #VisibleThinking routines are fun and give you a ton of info as students learn. @SHEG_Stanford has lessons on sourcing, contextualizing, and corroborating sources of information. #122edchat
A4 I would pull up a bunch of different apples. They would include the awesome tech tools that I always rant and rave about. The common thread in all of them is accessibility, increased voice, and differentiation options for Ss. Who can guess what they are?#122edchat
Q5- The Monster Mash is a Halloween favorite, if you were to pick/create a theme song for your career in education what would it be? Give us a line from the chorus.

A5: When you’ve been fighting for it all your life. You’ve been working for it every day and night, that’s when a superhero learns to fly. Every day, every hour, turn that pair into power. #SuperHeroes#122edchat
Q5- The Monster Mash is a Halloween favorite, if you were to pick/create a theme song for your career in education what would it be? Give us a line from the chorus.

Everything you want's a dream away
We are legends, every day" #122edchat

A5: Too many songs ,but
Class mantra, Take risks to grow and learn so:
A whole new world
A new fantastic point of view
No one to tell us no
Or where to go
Or say we're only dreaming
#122edchat
A5: “You gotta be” You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold, you gotta be wiser
You gotta be hard, you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm, you gotta stay together
All I know, all I know
Love will save the day

A5. I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way! Show them all the beauty they posess inside! Give them a sense of pride.#122edchat
A4 Hey Girl by Lady Gaga
Hey girl, hey girl
We can make it easy if we lift each other
Hey girl, hey girl
We don't need to keep on one-in' up another
Hey girl, hey girl
Hey girl, hey girl
If you lose your way
Just know that I got you
Just know that I got you
#122edchat
I teach middle school...if it's annoying, it might be a good song, lol! When I give a test I sing, "It's the TEST Day ever!" as kids enter the room. #122edchat
Have you tried reaching out to the authors with your ELA kids? Might be a cool experience...plus we have the resources to make it a reality. #122edchat
A5 I will pick the Thor Ragnarock song for pretty much everything I can, theme song, ring tone, music I want played when I enter a room. I've made at least 2 people make that my ring tone, lol. #Ahhhhahhhah#122edchat
My key research-based practice: feedback and continual re-assessment before issuing grades. Keep the cycle of learning going as long as possible.
As soon as you close the door on re-assessment, you close the door on hope, growth, and learning. Don't do it. #122edchat
A5: "Superman (It's Not Easy)" by Five For Fighting.
"I'm more than a bird, I'm more than a plane
I'm more than some pretty face beside a train
And it's not easy to be me"
#122edchat
Poo, look deeper or try to be objective.... I bet you can give yourself much more credit. This is a great community that lifts all ships too. #122edchat
Thank you @_on11 and @RealMrsBentley for a fabulously fun chat! Don't eat all the candy tonight - you'll need it to get through the day tomorrow! #122edchat
@icechipIL Mini is this Saturday in Oak Forest. @ice_il is always doing local programming. #ICE19 is late February. Check the #iceilchat thread as well. Also, keep an eye on the #122edchat and #aimsnetwork channels...lots of IL educators.
