The software development career track is like a multithreaded asynchronous system with chaos monkeys roaming free. #devdiscuss

  • ThePracticalDev Oct 24 @ 9:07 PM EDT
What about the software career path differs from the mainstream or the expectations going in? #devdiscuss
  • MrThomasRayner Oct 24 @ 9:07 PM EDT
#DevDiscuss I've long considered myself a "sysadmin", then creeping towards "developer", but settling on "technologist" now.
    In reply to @ThePracticalDev
  • MrThomasRayner Oct 24 @ 9:08 PM EDT
    #DevDiscuss I wouldn't want a self-taught surgeon, but self-taught devs are some of the best I know.
    In reply to @ThePracticalDev
  • courtneyxann Oct 24 @ 9:08 PM EDT
When I started I was a flash dev, I've been a front end dev, php dev, server admin, design, scrum master, usability specialist. #devdiscuss
  • Nick_Craver Oct 24 @ 9:08 PM EDT
A lot of people getting into programming think it's about writing code. So much for expectations, eh? #DevDiscuss
  • MrThomasRayner Oct 24 @ 9:10 PM EDT
#DevDiscuss The "slide the pizza under the door and go away" dev roles don't really fit in any of those descriptions, eh?
    In reply to @courtneyxann
  • onlybluefeet Oct 24 @ 9:10 PM EDT
Self-taught is completely acceptable in software. Not so much in other roles. #devdiscuss
  • mrskellyvaughn Oct 24 @ 9:10 PM EDT
There's no one path, and it's definitely not a straight path. You think you know where you want to end up, but once you're on your track, be open to change as you find your preferred working environment and technologies. #devdiscuss
  • IBeRenascent Oct 24 @ 9:11 PM EDT
There's a valid career path for just straight development. No need to move into management if you dislike dealing with people #devdiscuss

You’ve made it sound way too orderly and deterministic. #devdiscuss

#DevDiscuss I spend as much of my day talking/IMing/generally communicating as anything else. Gotta work well in a team!

  • courtneyxann Oct 24 @ 9:12 PM EDT
Tech moves so fast; You will probably change frameworks/languages every few years. Don't get too attached. Focus on standards. #devdiscuss
  • ferkungamaboobo Oct 24 @ 9:12 PM EDT
I wonder if people feel "programming" is more limited than it really is. Tons of varied skillsets, often outside "dev" #devdiscuss
  • MrThomasRayner Oct 24 @ 9:13 PM EDT

Now-a-days I think completing a project before the JS framework you built it with is outdated is a win #DevDiscuss
