A1. This is not a sometimes thing. Everything we say and do needs to reinforce how much we believe in our kids. Showing kids we believe in them needs to be part of how we do school. #tlap
A1 Appreciate Ss efforts, especially the small one, praise their achievements, no matter how big or small & make every situation into a positive learning event #tlap
A1: I think building relationships is a key component. When you spend the time getting to know your students and showing them that you care, they pick up on it #tlap
A1 I sit with them in class or in the cafeteria, celebrate when they give a good effort or take a risk, and make the occasional #goodnewscalloftheday home. #BeTheOne#tlap
I get to know them and say hello to them on a daily basis. We talk and joke, but I also coach them through the learning process. Often it makes the job more complicated but also more rewarding. #tlap
A1: language you use, focusing on descriptive feedback, letting them choose their learning journey based on curriculum standards but most imp is building relationships and a culture of trust and respect #tlap
A1: By sharing in their work and accomplishments and making sure that they know I'm there to help them become better people. More than anything, listening when they speak #tlap
Hi folks, how do I jump in on this conversation? I'm new to twitter. I currently an am EBD and autism specialist, but hoping to join GenEd next fall in ELA, Spanish, or middle school Math. I look forward to building my resources from you #tlap
A1 I make sure that I establish relationships w all my Ss- greet them, care for them, treat them like they're more than 'just' students. See their strengths beyond what used to be school compliancy #tlap#betheone
#TLAP Listen, respond not react. Trust by giving them independence and choice. Eye contact, smile and presence. The more we stop and connect, build relationships and just enjoy what we do the more they feel our admiration and joy of knowing them.
A1: Aside from giving them challenging tasks, because I know they can succeed. I tell my parents and students on back to school night/first day of school that I believe I am teaching a president, an astronaut, a plumber, a philanthropist, people who will change the world! #tlap
A1: No better way than spending time with them and TELLING them you believe in them. Especially the tough kids. Keep telling them and telling them. Great advice I got from @BrianMendler. #Tlap
A1 my door is ALWAYS open and Ss know that. I have Ss in and out of my room all day to talk about things of little importance to heavy discussions. Judgement free zone! #tlap
A1: Not only do I make sure to KNOW my Ss, past Ss, and future Ss, I don't give up on them, let them get out of work, or let them give me less than their very best effort, no matter how many times it takes. #tlap#BeTheOne
A1 get to know them as kids first! Know their baseball team name, and their little sister and ask about them! Kids will work for someone that they believe truly cares! ❤️ #tlap
✨A1: BE THEIR BIGGEST FAN! Show a true interest in getting to know your students. Check-in with them on their interests and passions, and cheer them on! #TLAP#BeTheOne ✨
A1: greet them at the door at start and when leaving; take an interest in their lives - ask them about their weekend for example; I went to their hockey games b/c of the relationships I built with both Ss and parent. #tlap
One thing I want in my classroom is a section devoted just for students! Work they're proud of, pictures in the paper, anything they want to show off!
#tlap
A1: My Ss know I believe in them because I am one person they can count on everyday to listen and engage in conversations. We share joy, sadness, fear, excitement, triumphs, and growths. #tlap
A1) Talking with them, listening to them, learning about them, comforting them, having fun with them, laughing with them, caring about them, spending time with them. #tlap
A1: at beg of year, I ask Ss what I should know about them as a student; then I continually follow up with them personally and tend that Garden of engagement started with their share #tlap
A1 My students know I believe in them because of how all of their learning connects to their own values. It’s not about what I believe; it’s about empowering them to believe and making sure they feel connected to a community. #tlap
A1: Connect with and build relationships with Ss! They value conversation with people who care and show kindness to them on a frequent basis. Such a great motivator! #tlap
A1 My students know I believe in them because I am always there to listen. I try to tailor their learning to their needs and they know they can always show how they master their learning more than once. I am their cheerleader, their ear, their mentor, their collaborator. #tlap
A1: Use their names. Look them in the eye. Tell them that I am proud of them! Wish them a happy birthday! Dance with them when they wanna celebrate & cry with them when they feel sad. Believe them & tell them so! #tlap
A1: Well, most importantly, I tell them I believe in them, and I am sincere about it. I am patient with them, and I give them lots of chances to show me they understand the material. #tlap
A1 Try to figure out what they need. Some need public props, some need private props. High Fives and "I am proud of you" go a long way to kiddos. Don't ever let a kid think you don't believe they can do it. #tlap#betheone
A1: By committing to having a "moment" with every student during the year. Conversation after class, going to their games, writing them a note, calling their parents at home. We have to make those deposits over and over again. #tlap
A1: We tell them we want to publish as much of their work as we can. It shows we believe in them, we trust them, and we think were they are brilliant! #tlap
A1 So important, especially in today's climate! I encourage every student to participate in class, and no matter how small the contribution, make them feel they have given the best answer. Also, high 5s work great! #tlap#watlap
I spent the first 5 days each semester this year being more aware of connecting & building relationships. Made a huge difference. I have seniors who are still actually working. #tlap#1st5days
A1: I tell them as often as I can. Every time a student leaves my office it is the last thing they hear from me. It is critical for them to know that I am their advocate, their biggest fan and someone who will do whatever I can to help them succeed. #tlap
A1. Kids know when you are insincere. We need to build rock solid relationships where the kids know they can trust the adults in their lives in the school. #tlap
A1: I tell my Ss daily that I believe in them & show in my interactions with them!! There are messages in my classroom that reinforce this message! I also love supporting them outside of school!! #TLAP
A1: Make sure you show them you believe in them first chance you get. Give them opportunities for them to shine both in the classroom, and outside of it. #tlap
A1 Lately it's been through me pushing them outside of their comfort zones and sharing stories about my personal life as examples. Also, not letting them settle for a bad grade or poor effort. #tlap
A1: relationships. Make an effort to find out what they are interested in and talk about it... Even if it's of zero interest to you. They notice. #tlap
A1: Showing students you believe in them is a thoughtful process. Ss know what is genuine. Make sure they are seen, heard, and that their story/contribution matters. #tlap
A1: by recognizing all student achievements in the classroom. Whether it be in the quality of a response to being heard across the room to not blushing or faltering when they speak. Recognize little victories!!! #TLAP
A1:
I say it, write it, sing it, chant it. I give the Ss the benefit of the doubt. I keep up w them in their other classes & activities. I give encouragement. On tough days, we talk at the end of class. I tell them I believe in them and love them. #tlap
A1: I had a board outside my room that students displayed what they were proud of for the week. The also shared it on our class story on class dojo. #tlap
A1 My kids know I believe in them because I tell them so. Also my actions reflect that I believe in them. I push, nudge, inspire and they push, nudge & inspire me back. #tlap
A1 I Tell them! I don't let them get away with "I don't know" kind of answers, because I believe all my Ss have something to share! #voice#choice#TLAP
By the way, Kimberly from north TX.
A1: Show then how much we love to watch them learn and grow by being physically and emotionally present in our interactions. As a lead learner, this means living in classrooms! #tlap
A1 listen. Care. Listen. Love. Listen. Ask. Listen. Share. Listen to hear with your heart. And let them know you believe in them. Encourage kids with praise and celebration. Display their work. Validate their efforts!! #TLAP
Work the room during whole group lessons. Stop at each student while teaching and discussing. Give rollercoaster claps and gold nugget magic for attempts and risk taking for reluctant learners is HUGE to recognize. #tlap
A1: push them outside of their comfort zone. Teach them the important lesson that that is where the magic happens. Believe that all are capable of growing I. This zone! #tlap
All this. Yes! I cannot even tell you how much it means when kids know that you know their names. It puts them on their heels. They're like, "How do you know me?" I tell them, "I just do because you're important." #tlap
A1: Use their names. Look them in the eye. Tell them that I am proud of them! Wish them a happy birthday! Dance with them when they wanna celebrate & cry with them when they feel sad. Believe them & tell them so! #tlap
A1 the time spent working on relationships, being available, working with them, one on one in class, I make it known that I am there to support them #tlap#betheone
A1 - Adam mentioned calling parents. I agree 100 percent. Rarely do teachers call with positive news. It’s a great ice breaker and an amazing way to build trust, community and a bridge with parents. Whisper down the lane influence. #TLAP
A1: I show genuine interest in their interests! I’ve learned more about Minecraft, Pokémon, & Ninja Turtles more in the last 3 years than I ever had before! #tlap
A1: See them. Really see them. Beyond prickly behaviors. Beyond the shy exterior. Beyond the “normal”. See the amazing people they are and the potential they contain. #tlap#BeTheOne
A1: The best way I get to know students is to genuinely care for them! I make sure to wish them a happy birthday, ask them about their interests and after school activities, and make sure I remember to ask them follow-up questions next time I see them! #tlap
You show students you believe in them by giving them the support they need to be successful. You listen, you show up for them, you become their cheerleader! #tlap#betheone
Pirate Family Night ☠️- High School English Teacher from Virginia, popping over from #LearnLAP to #TLAP - In thinking about this chat for tonight, I was reminded of the High School English teachers who wanted to #BeTheOne for me... and inspire me to do the same for my Ss.
A1: I learned this at a conference and it has changed my teaching: be cognizant of each S thinking, “Am I being seen? Am I being heard?” Strive to see and hear them all #tlap
A1. Encouraging them to take risks, helping them with homework, getting them to believe in themselves when they don't because of ... . Celebrating successes with them, having prob solving disc., sharing ideas, and giving them wings to fly! #tlap
A1: I do, we do, you do. Gradual release of autonomy makes them see expectations, model expectations then follow expectations. High fives all around at all times! #tlap
A1- Tell them that you care. Be honest and show true examples that you care and love them. Take note of what they tell you and be an attentive listener. #TLAP
A1 Tika, an elementary educator from Las Vegas, MV, joining a little late. I show my Ss I believe in them by encouraging them to pursue their dreams & passions using TED Talks, lunch chats, speech opportunities, etc. #TLAP#BeTheOne
Hi folks, how do I jump in on this conversation? I'm new to twitter. I currently an am EBD and autism specialist, but hoping to join GenEd next fall in ELA, Spanish, or middle school Math. I look forward to building my resources from you #tlap
I ask Ss what they plan to do after they graduate. I give them time process the question, & when I get “I don’t know,” I ask about their interests. I ask about possible avenues based on their interests. I engage in a conversation & let them know I see the possibilities #tlap
I just listen to them! Sometimes they go a whole day without anyone genuinely being interested in what they have to say. Sometimes it's worth sacrificing a little class time for Ss to feel appreciated and important. #tlap
A1: My ss know I believe in them because I tell them, everyday and often. I make sure to highlight the special even little accomplishments they should be proud of too! I make time to spend 1:1 time with them telling them such every day #tlap
A1: Ss go through their own learning pits. There are times they absolutely want to quit. This is the time when you dig deep and give your best pep talk because they'll remember moments like these. #tlap
A1: i always make sure I am treating them with dignity and respect. I always like to spend some time everyday just hanging out with them doing what they want to do for a few minutes. #tlap
Hey #tlap crew. Who wants to join me at Marian Catholic (IL) next year. Hiring for English, Theology, Social Studies, Librarian. DM me if you want to know more.
Hi folks, how do I jump in on this conversation? I'm new to twitter. I currently an am EBD and autism specialist, but hoping to join GenEd next fall in ELA, Spanish, or middle school Math. I look forward to building my resources from you #tlap
A1: Greeting them, smiling at them, being genuinely concerned about them, showing an interest in their day, laughing with them, eating lunch with them, meeting one-on-one with them, etc. #tlap
A1: Every single second of the day I provide conversations and ample time to “talk” and joke. I attend their basketball games & extracurricular events to show them that I believe in them- the whole child. Not just the child in classroom #tlap
Q2. Our dreams change throughout our lives. How do you teach your students it is okay for dreams to change as long as you keep dreaming? #Tlap#BeTheOne
A1: use their first name, use a nick name, create a specific hand shake, look them in the eyes and spend quality time asking about things that interest them. #tlap
A1: I sit with them and learn with them. I talk them through their thought process. Sometimes I get ideas on paper for them. I appreciate them as people and recognize the baggage they bring. I actively listen and ask more questions than give advice. I follow up later. #tlap
A1: As a music teacher and educator. I always hold the door and greet them before they even enter the classroom and in class I try to guide them in the musical process and let them know that all of them can accomplish the tasks. #TLAP
A1: For alme@of our kids who struggle I share my own stories of struggle and how I overcame obstacles. It’s it always like the movies. Sometimes it’s messy, and kids need to know it’s okay to not be perfect all the time. #Tlap
Parent here, jumping in to suggest...
A1) Build relationships with families where you share all the good their kids are doing. And take the time to learn about your kids from their families. #tlap
A2. By having conversations and sharing your own experiences. Encourage to chase their dreamsn, but the non negotiable is they continue to dream. #Tlap#BeTheOne
Two words - building relationships. Praise can sound empty if there is no relationship between recipient and praiser. Relationship builds trust and trust builds confidence.
A1 My kids know I believe in them because I tell them so. Also my actions reflect that I believe in them. I push, nudge, inspire and they push, nudge & inspire me back. #tlap
A2 Dreams can never be a destination. They should be goals along the way to be the best you can be. If your dream does come true, then you need another dream. #tlap
Q2. Our dreams change throughout our lives. How do you teach your students it is okay for dreams to change as long as you keep dreaming? #Tlap#BeTheOne
A2: Modeling that dreaming with stories from our own journeys. Students LOVE their teachers and enjoy their stories.
Aren't we all still chasing a dream?
#TLAP#APTeach
A2: I tell my students all the time that I love being a teacher but that I still dream of being a talkshow host. Important to teach kids you can be happy in the now while still having dreams. #tlap#betheone
A2: give real stories I Ss have learned more of my own experiences and how dreams change but never losing sight of the original dream and passion #tlap
A1: "I love you" and "I'm here for you" are constant. I am also very alert for changes in a student. I take this as a chance to show them that I am here for them! #tlap
A1 In 10 years Ss will be working in jobs that don't exist now. I tell Ss that their only job is to make sure not to close any doors on their future. Kick everyone open with dreams and goals. When I was in MS I wanted to be a vet #dreamschange#tlap#betheone
A2: Just did a round table with a small class of Jrs & Srs. Went around stating our dreams, me included. Eye opening for them and me. Start this earlier! Not March! Next year it'll be August! #tlap#BeTheOne
My pride @teachlovesci figuring out her paleontologist outfit for tomorrow’s excavation! Her middles are a tough crowd yet, she keeps showing up! #tlap#makeitreal#kidsdeserveit
A2: Blog & reflect. I have my students share and reflect. We’re only in third grade but we’re building those habits of being mindful. Treating our dreams with care. Also, by following our SMART goals. #tlap
A1 Show them my humanity, listen to their interests, try things they like and talk with them, set high expectations and cheer them on every step, laugh, dance, sing with them, show up for their stuff, call them on their mistakes and expect better. Thank them for being them #tlap
A2 To teach about dreaming, take the time and build relationships, find out their dreams. Share your own. Make it reciprocal. Support their dreams, listen, encourage. Do not judge. Show them how to help overcome obstacles. Show them that possibilities are endless. Believe. #tlap
Q2. Our dreams change throughout our lives. How do you teach your students it is okay for dreams to change as long as you keep dreaming? #Tlap#BeTheOne
A1) I greet each Ss everyday w/ a hello, hi-five or fist pump a good morning. We have conversations and check in with in classes that they are having trouble to watch them in the learning environment.#tlap
A2: When you model risk taking and show students the it's ok to evolve and change... that's learning. When they see that in you, they see it in themselves #tlap
A2: we recently had our spring conferences (student-lead) and one section was presenting to their parents how their goals hav changed. We saw what they were aiming for on day 1 compared what their new targets were. #tlap
Q2. Our dreams change throughout our lives. How do you teach your students it is okay for dreams to change as long as you keep dreaming? #Tlap#BeTheOne
A2: kids need to understand that dreams can change and evolve just like we do. As our experiences impact our lives, our lives impact our dreams for the future #tlap#betheone
A1 Give students your time, your ears, & genuinely give them your heart. Present them not only rigor & relevance but support. Be honest that you are going to push. We might fail together, but we will stand up again together #tlap#BeTheOne
Q2. Our dreams change throughout our lives. How do you teach your students it is okay for dreams to change as long as you keep dreaming? #Tlap#BeTheOne
A2: I also think it’s important to share your own dreams to the students, share the ups & downs- and all of the turnarounds! You’re human. Show them! #tlap
A1: For some of our kids who struggle, I tell them about my own obstacles in life. It’s important that they know that it’s okay to struggle; you don’t have to be perfect all the time. #Tlap
#tlap A1 At present my students are my kids in college & grandkids in preschool. I support clinician PD. Mostly it’s about authenticity in learning activities, presence & for healthcare staff, accreditation.
A2: Modeling and sharing our own dreams. We need to share what our vision is, our "why", and model for them how to handle life when it does not go according to plan. #tlap
Q2. Our dreams change throughout our lives. How do you teach your students it is okay for dreams to change as long as you keep dreaming? #Tlap#BeTheOne
A2 Model it in your teaching Changing as your life, or classroom, changes is normal If we model that & share from our experiences of changing dreams #tlap
Q2. Our dreams change throughout our lives. How do you teach your students it is okay for dreams to change as long as you keep dreaming? #Tlap#BeTheOne
A2 Share my story, I have explored a lot of different options, have diverse education exper, and letting them know it is okay, dream big, changes are fine, just keep moving forward #tlap#BeTheOne
A2: Life is all about being FLEXIBLE in your body, mind, and spirit! I model this EVERY DAY with my students to show them we all must PERSEVERE to achieve our goals, dreams, and aspirations! #TLAP#BeTheOne@sheehyrw@burgessdave#JoyfulLeaders
A2: I tell students how in 7th grade I wanted to be a world famous historian, by high school I wanted to be a lawyer/senator/president, and when I went to college I found my calling was truly in education. Sharing the story can be a powerful way to help your Ss! #tlap
A2: Share your story with them. I dreamt of being a reporter/journalist. 5 majors later - here I am. And now working on my Admin cert. because my dreams just got bigger #tlap
A2: Share your journey with them. What did you want to be when you were a kid? What unexpected paths did you take on your journey? What changed and what stayed the same? #TLAP#BeTheOne
Q2. Our dreams change throughout our lives. How do you teach your students it is okay for dreams to change as long as you keep dreaming? #Tlap#BeTheOne
Q2. Our dreams change throughout our lives. How do you teach your students it is okay for dreams to change as long as you keep dreaming? #Tlap#BeTheOne
In middle school, their dreams may change daily, lol. I talk to them about establishing what's important to them and staying on the right track. I try to encourage them to work hard no matter what the end goal is. #tlap
I let me students change their topics throughout the year if they get bored of researching the topic. This is my secret way of having them try out a career/interest in a lower stakes environment and if they don't like it, they move onto something that they are interested in #tlap
A1 It’s the best to teach in a rural k-12 school and cheer on our present, past, and future students. Our teachers can check on and follow the Ss for years. #onebighappyfamily#tlap
A2 I’ve never seen students become overly attached to a dream, but they do become very attached to status goals—sometimes at the expense of their learning, wellbeing, and relationships. Teaching them to clarify values and be flexible about goals is crucial.
#tlap
A2: I share my experiences with students and how I got to where I am and I lend an ear when they need to be heard, then we talk about how to move forward or get “unstuck” #tlap
A2. Share with them how the dreams have changed in your life. We talk about what we want to be when we get older at least once a month at morning meeting and they can see how they're not the only ones who might change their mind. #tlap
A2 this is where school needs to be so much more than it is. Too often I see Ss unable to follow passions because of mandates, both from the state and our own school! #tlap
I give Ss real life examples of how people have changed based on their current dreams - could be famous people or even me changing career paths several times in my life based on my dreams. #tlap#watlap
A2: (my current ss are nonverbal) what I really look forward to doing with my ss is a journal they keep that holds their goals, reflections, ideas, and dreams that we check in on throughout the year and see how things change and grow as they add to it and as they do. #tlap
Q2. Our dreams change throughout our lives. How do you teach your students it is okay for dreams to change as long as you keep dreaming? #Tlap#BeTheOne
A2.2: Being transparent about our situations is always helpful. If we fail or get defeated, we cannot remain on the mat "counting the lights". Get up, dust yourself off, and keep battling. #tlap
A2: As a school counselor I ask my students, "If you could be anything in the whole wide world, what would you be when you grow up, even if it's crazy?" Then we discuss ideas A-Z. I encourage them to have different ideas, as dreams certainly change throughout life! #tlap
A1: I have a light up white board in the shape of a speech bubble. I put an inspirational/motivational quote on it daily and discuss the meaning with the students. #tlap
A2 Teaching a #growthmindset is an important part of this process. I also share how my dreams have changed over the years. I share informational and fictional picture books and novels where the main character’s dreams change. #Tlap#BeTheOne
Q2. Our dreams change throughout our lives. How do you teach your students it is okay for dreams to change as long as you keep dreaming? #Tlap#BeTheOne
A2: Honesty and sharing! I love sharing my past and present dreams with Ss. The struggles and victories when I conquered a dream, and then how that lead to another dream. Modeling this, gives Ss the window to do the same. #tlap#BeTheOne
A2. I talk to my students about how my dreams have changed over time and why or how. And they should change, because once you've achieved one goal, you must dream of another! Opem, honest conversations are vital. #TLAP
Q2. Our dreams change throughout our lives. How do you teach your students it is okay for dreams to change as long as you keep dreaming? #Tlap#BeTheOne
A2: Model - Tell your Ss your dreams -- hopes -- passions. Share how your dreams have changed as you learn and grow and meet new people. Yes model so you can #BeTheOne#tlap
I sometimes use myself as an example. I wanted to be a police officer, but I just so happened to walk past a teacher job fair. 10 years later & still loving this profession. I tell them it’s ok for the path to change, but it’s not ok to ever stop having goals. #tlap
Q2. Our dreams change throughout our lives. How do you teach your students it is okay for dreams to change as long as you keep dreaming? #Tlap#BeTheOne
A2: part of teaching about dreams is teaching about the challenges and obstacles that are going to come your way; again, talk about yourself and any celebrities/athletes they admire - it wasn't an easy road for them. #tlap
A2: I share how my dreams have changed. From dreaming of appearing on HeeHaw to Broadway Star to voice of Disney Character to Teacher. Also ss share their dreams and how many possibilities could come from their dream. #tlap
A1: meet them “where they live” when you can. Meaning find common ground and extend yourself into their space - with respect for them and theirs. #tlap
A1: I hold them accountable. I know that may not be the popular answer, but Randy Pausch, in “The Last Lecture” says that when your coaches/teachers stop “riding you,” they stopped caring for you. I hold my standards high, but give Ss every possible tool to achieve them. #TLAP
A2: Share your story with them. I dreamt of being a reporter/journalist. 5 majors later - here I am. And now working on my Admin cert. because my dreams just got bigger #tlap
A2. When talking to Ss about dreams, sharing our own experiences let's them know how dreams change over time! From a child perspective, to a teen-ager, - to a college learner, then adult professional! #tlap
A2 heck. I’m 50 something and I don’t know what I wanna be when I grow up yet — how should they!? The positions for them will be all new and different soon enough - let’s teach them to be awesomeness and prepared for anything !! #TLAP
A2: I love this question! I try to do this by being courageous & vulnerable with my Ss. I changed my college major 4 times!! I tell them that. It's okay to not know, to ask the big questions, dream the big dreams. Try & see! #tlap
A2: To adopt a dreamer mindset at a young age, you must be taught to think fluidly. Life lessons and people who highlight your strengths exist in all moments if you are taught to embrace the moment. Possibilities are endless and change equals rebirth. #tlap
A2 If i am busy wirh something i tell them to wait one minute and i get to a pause point. Then i make sure the student knows they have 100% of my attention! #tlap
A2 Dreams are the sparks that ignite dynamic actions which will change the world. We have to make it a necessary beat in the lexicon of the schoolhouse. #tlap#BeTheOne
A2: I have a few of our really tough kids who I share my own journey with. I used the road less traveled to arrive at my current location. That’s okay...it’s about the journey! Kids need to know that! #Tlap
A2: By expressing how many different dreams you’ve had while growing up! Teach them how you are constantly growing and evolving so your dreams grow and evolve as well. #tlap#betheone
Q2. Our dreams change throughout our lives. How do you teach your students it is okay for dreams to change as long as you keep dreaming? #Tlap#BeTheOne
Share stories with Ss about yourself and how your own dreams paved the path for where you are today. Sharing builds trust. Trust builds the ability to dream. #TLap#BeTheOne
Q2. Our dreams change throughout our lives. How do you teach your students it is okay for dreams to change as long as you keep dreaming? #Tlap#BeTheOne
A1: meet them “where they live” when you can. Meaning find common ground and extend yourself into their space - with respect for them and theirs. #tlap
A2) The depth and complexity icon #ChangeOverTime is used often in our class. Ss see change as part of the process of learning, life, relationships, and history. #tlap
A2:
I share my dreams and dreams that have been let go bc other dreams seemed more important or that just took a back seat. I also share about a time when I couldn’t articulate any dreams and how that felt. I don’t think I was w/out them, I just couldn’t see them. #tlap
A2: Everything goes back to relationships & taking the time to get to know Ss. Giving them lots of praise for having dreams & goals is a start & letting them know it's all right to take risks if those change as they grow #tlap
A2: At the HS level, kids seem to be practical & want to have everything figured out. We must encourage them to keep dreaming and dream big! Instead of asking, "What are your plans," ask "What are your dreams?" #tlap
A2: I constantly tell students that I laughed in the face of my 8th grade ENG teacher when she said I should be a teacher. I do this to show them that life will take you in great unexpected places! #Tlap
A2: Share your own experiences with Ss. Go after your dreams in front of them. Let them see you be vulnerable. Kids can have the most empathy at times. #tlap
✨A2: BUCKET LISTS! I love dreaming with my students! We create bucket lists at the beginning of the year to use for writing assignments and we update them throughout the year! #TLAP#BeTheOne#EduGIFs✨
A2: we talk about goals in class a lot. I always share my personal and school goals also. This year we added a bucket list to our goal writing. We talked about dreams and goals as part of the process. #Tlap
I talk about how I’m not done growing and learning. I want to learn how to play the cello and guitar. My dream retirement job is to rock babies. Even as simple as little dreams and goals. I keep them up to date of my home to do lists, like decorating for bday parties. #tlap
A2) With my own kids, I've directly explained how people may now go through a few different careers in their lifetimes. So don't give into pressure to "choose" as if you're choosing for a lifetime. #tlap#BeTheOne
Q2. Our dreams change throughout our lives. How do you teach your students it is okay for dreams to change as long as you keep dreaming? #Tlap#BeTheOne
A2: Do we let them know that we hit road bumps along the way? Dreams don't just happen, but we can't give up either. (Just don't show them this clip.) https://t.co/XL9XqqNRZb#tlap
A2 - Stressing the positivity of risk taking and being allowed to not always be perfect. Too often it’s about a letter, number or percentage. This allows and even helps to promote a lack of dreaming. #TLAP
A1: I tell them I believe in them, even when they don't believe in themselves! A fav former student was one who didn't think he could succeed. He's now a marine with a beautiful family heading back to school. #tlap#BeTheOne
Ryan - I'm so happy for you and cannot wait to read your book. By the way, I got to do a podcast with the famous @sheehyrw Episode #10 - We called it Be The One. https://t.co/0kuYgdAUl0#tlap
Building solid relationships with my students is key! I greet each and every one of them every morning, and thank them for being at school. I'm available to them. We also talk about having growth mindsets and that it's okay to make mistakes! #tlap
A2: Sharing my story and experiences that got me to where I am, helping them realize their potential, encouraging them to always be reaching for the stars, encouraging them to always, always believe in themselves, and to dream big. #tlap
A2: Like many have said, I share my story and my dreams and how they evolved. Sharing literature/picture books on this topic will paint more beautiful pictures. #tlap#BeTheOne
Q2. Our dreams change throughout our lives. How do you teach your students it is okay for dreams to change as long as you keep dreaming? #Tlap#BeTheOne
Sometimes it just takes the simplest eye contact with a nod other times it takes the side hug! They want to know you hear them, see them and that they have a voice. Share lots; in many creative ways. #TLAP
A2: I encourage my students to DREAM BIG!! It’s by class motto!! We talk about dreams & even set some as a class! It’s all about working towards a goal!! #Tlap
Are those choices limited to what we think of as work? Certainly we all have to work and derive satisfaction from it... but maybe they won't all define themselves by it? #tlap
A2: As a school counselor I ask my students, "If you could be anything in the whole wide world, what would you be when you grow up, even if it's crazy?" Then we discuss ideas A-Z. I encourage them to have different ideas, as dreams certainly change throughout life! #tlap
A2: By teaching Ss that their dreams are the stories of their life. Books have lots of chapters/editions and dreams can too. Encourage Ss to never stop dreaming and continue to tell/imagine their story. #tlap
Acknowledge attempts and define them as SUCCESS. Correct answers do NOT define success! If we want our students to evolve as learners, we must teach them that success is found in the PROCESS of learning, which is filled with conversations, debates-NOT correct answers! #tlap
A3: Build the culture first. Get to know each child by name and greet them in the hall, at the door, outside. Make sure each of them has a voice in how and what they learn. #tlap
A3 we get to know our kids personally finds out what they are passionate about and encourage them model risk taking and goal setting and provide them with the supports they need most of all listen to their voice #TLAP
A3: be open to feedback and to take that feedback and make the necessary changes...and listen listen listen...build that culture to let everyone know that we are all works in progress...I know I am, for sure! #tlap
A3: Taking time to listen and investigate. Respond to the root of the problem, rather than the fruit of the issue. 9 times out of 10, there is a backstory. If we can connect with that, we can have breakthrough. #tlap
A3: I make sure that I know where my kids need to go academically and socially and then develop or find the resources to take them there, whether it's a curriculum piece or another staff member #Tlap
A2: I love to bring back our recent graduates - to talk with our HS students about their journey. The power of #storytelling! Priceless. #tlap#BeTheOne
A3: by taking risks and sharing what I learned. Also, by looking for others (you guys) who do the same. Shared this in #learnlap but it still applies #Tlap
A3 Make every effort to check in with each students a couple times a week, watch for changes in #formativeassessment & just watch their body language as they enter class #tlap
A2: I tell my students all the time that they can be whatever they want to be. We talk about their goals often and when they change we discuss how thats ok and we move forward with a new plan. #tlap
Q2. Our dreams change throughout our lives. How do you teach your students it is okay for dreams to change as long as you keep dreaming? #Tlap#BeTheOne
A3: differentiated instruction!!! Getting out of the way of the high achievers and supporting the students that need the extra support. I have been using the different reading levels in Spanish from @Newsela for literacy in Spanish. #gamechanger#Tlap
A3. Differentiate instruction. Pay attention to how the class is doing before moving on. Taking the time to reteach when necessary and move faster when they really get it. #tlap#watlap
A3: Know their history...what was their past like? What is their current reality outside of school? How can we use their social history to help them books a future story? #tlap#betheone
A3: Make relationships with my kids my number one priority. Kids don’t learn from people they don’t like and respect and they don’t respect someone they don’t like. I care about them and their growth more than anything else we do. #tlap#betheond
A3: RELATIONSHIPS. It's all about relationships and building a culture of caring and support. Take risks together and break the mold, THEN invite others to join you. #TLAP#BeTheOne
A2: I am very open with my Ss about the many lives I had before achieving my “Dream Deferred” of teaching- 5 different colleges, 30+ jobs. I model to my students the many paths to achieve a dream & use the literature we read to coach preserverance through those obstacles. #TLAP
Q2. Our dreams change throughout our lives. How do you teach your students it is okay for dreams to change as long as you keep dreaming? #Tlap#BeTheOne
A3 Ts need to commit to be game changers. I never shy away from talking to my Ss about what in school is not working for them and then how we can work around it. #tlap
A3 Give a chance to get up, dust themselves and try again. If we don't teach them how to recover now, when will they learn.
Everyone knows that ant can't mover a rubber tree plant, ..........oops there goes another rubber tree plant. #tlap#BeTheOne
A2: storytelling is the answer here! As it often is. You share yours - and give lots of chances and ways for them to share theirs
#tlap#digitalstorytelling#stuvoice
A3: Every kid succeeds if we help them define success. It can't look the same for every kid, and it shouldn't. Empowering students to set goals and helping them to achieve them should be our focus. #tlap#BeTheOne
A3 We can help students define “succeeding” in school based on their own values, and then help them build academic portfolios of work that matches that definition of success. #tlap
When a portfolio is based on a student’s own definition of “meaningful,” it becomes more than just another assignment students have to complete. Read how: https://t.co/L3AOzQmoyf#studentengagement
Again, let yourself be a role model. Let kids know about a time when your dreams changed but life worked out. Give kids real examples to work with. Don’t lecture, model. #TLAP#betheone
A3) By seeing each child as an individual, not a number. Each child is unique and special. And somebody's baby. I want to honor the precious children that parents send to school for me to teach and love. #tlap
A2) the Core of the person stays the same but the dreams change and that is okay. I share my bucket list with Ss and invite them to think beyond the walls of the classroom. #BETHEONE#TLAP
A3: Give everyone a fresh start everyday. Also we can be innovative and creative for our students inside the box we are given. #thewildcard#tlap#betheone
A3 - Introduce, model, practice learning strategies that can improve retention of material...retrieval practice, spaced practice, interleaving, dual coding, etc.
#tlap
A2: focus on skills not the content; what are the big ideas/universal themes in the curriculum and what open ended Qs that we can ask that will lead them to ask more Qs? What tools can we use so they are connecting globally? #inquiry#tlap#GlobalEdChat#edtechchat
A3 No matter the system, the obstacles, our job is to help kids find ways to succeed. I conference with my Ss, give them more than one way to demonstrate learning, I let them design assessments and ahow creativity. Intry to make learning fun & about them. Relevance. Rigor. #tlap
A3: Every kid succeeds if we help them define success. It can't look the same for every kid, and it shouldn't. Empowering students to set goals and helping them to achieve them should be our focus. #tlap#BeTheOne
A3 understanding, caring, listening! Focusing on Ss strengths beyond our four walls, realizing so many career and familial paths can equal success #tlap#BeTheOne
Educate the whole child. Use trauma informed practices and Social Emotional Learning and curriculum to ensure I reach one, teach each one. Meet them where they are at. #tlap
A3: You have to do whatever it takes to help them succeed. Build positive relationships, provide teachers with meaningful PD, encourage risk-taking, embrace failure and celebrate opportunities for growth. Always smile, be passionate and show students you care about them. #tlap
A3- Building a community that helps each other- Ss are encouraged to chat, coach and support each other on everything but the district assessments. Modeling coaching is big! #tlap
A3: Once I was told that we should create safety nets for our students. The safety net is comprised of parents, peers, teachers, community members and administrators. The more people we have in our nets, the less likely we are to fall through. I try to live this ideal. #tlap
A3 Our kids definitely deserve the best! We are their #wildcard. I ensure every Ss is successful by never giving up on them. Everyday is a new day. We always talk about the power of #yet#BeTheOne#TLAP
A3) Recognize/Celebrate progress; open letter to students reminding them that you know they are more than a test score; as our vision at #SESBees says, “Every child every day deserves a choice, a chance, a champion.” #Tlap#BeTheOne
Differentiation and choices! Some Ss hate Spanish no matter what, but I try to keep it interesting and offer options that each of them can identify with at some point. It's definitely not foolproof, but I try to motivate all of them to succeed! #tlap
A3: Be available as much as possible; I know it’s not for everyone, but a student can email me whenever they have a question, no matter the day or time #tlap
A2) when I talk to Ss we talk about dreams, how certain individuals had dreams but no one believed in them. However, now they have reached that goal. Got to tell them to talk it into existence.#tlap
A3: By bringing positivity. Be vibrant. Make the mundane- extraordinary. Teach the kids to ignore the negativity and the “Buts” (But we cant do this....)Do it! Make change. I tell my students to think differently, and this can be a very silent OR loud Good morning! #TLAP
When my students stay back to tutor with me, I also help them with their homework and projects in other classes as well. We are in it to win it!!! #tlap
A3: Do whatever is necessary for all Ss to succeed. Multiple tries at mastery, longer time to become proficient, offer different strategies, choice, voice, and whatever else is needed either academically, or SEL. #tlap#BeTheOne
a3. WE focus on Student's intellectual safety. we set them up to ensure success. WE meet the kids where they are and ensure we are meeting ALL of their needs. #tlap
A3: Holding everyone accountable in the class. In this way, everyone contributes something to the discussions. Everyone has something whether it's an entire response, part of one, presenting for the group. Everyone is and has value in the discussion. #TLAP
A3 Find their strengths and go from there. Don't be afraid to see what a child can do. Regardless of what it is, celebrate their successes all the same. #tlap
Yes @bethhill2829 Everyone has a story. You are so right that we need to let them share, tell their story, write it. They have a voice so we need to make sure they use it. Thanks! #JoyfulLeaders#tlap
A3: My goal to make sure I’m meeting the needs of all my Ss! I provide differentiation & we set individual Smart Goals so Ss can track their own growth & success! #Tlap#BeTheOne
A3 creating a safe nurturing climate for success. Nobody should be kept from taking academic strides because of fear or roadblocks. Teach S to spot the blocks and help them find tools to knock em down or climb over. Never giving up on them. #tlap
A3: Honor all definitions of success: living a balanced life, education, trades, happiness, community, what can you contribute to our world during your lifetime? #tlap
Q2. Our dreams change throughout our lives. How do you teach your students it is okay for dreams to change as long as you keep dreaming? #Tlap#BeTheOne
A3 - I think succeed is difficult to define for everyone. Schools tend to define success in specific terms. What we need to think about is each person’s dreams, goals and how they actually progress. I have a student who did nothing for 3 months. He woke up and BAM! New man. #tlap
A3 I try to plan stations allowing me opp to pull aside when necessary, #HyperDocs that have potential to be customized, keep it engaging w/ escape rooms. I'm always willing to try something new. #tlap
A3: this is the hardest question we all face. Choice. Voice. And supporting each other at grade level, school level, district level, community level... #tlap
When my students stay back to tutor with me, I also help them with their homework and projects in other classes as well. We are in it to win it!!! #tlap
A3: Kids may not understand what success looks like, so we must help them understand what they are capable of and empower them to believe they can accomplish it. #tlap
A3: We have used our digital tools to create and combine our two classrooms/schools as one community! The teachers are accountable to each other students are accountable to each other and were there to make sure we all succeed! #virtualteamteaching#tlap
#tlap A2b On those occasions when I teach adults or present at a conference I share what made me go for it, what @KatieStroudPro calls Hero’s Journey.. spinning the tale of woe to wow w/occasional fail & dusting off..
A3: In efforts to ensure my caseload succeeds, as my students' school counselor I am sure to advocate for them and their needs, even when it may leave me in an unfavorable position with my colleagues. Also, not selling students short and having high expectations for all! #tlap
This is so true. Student success is often more apparent when growth can be made clear. End line should not be the definition of success in a learning environment. #tlap#betheone
Figuring out what they need. That means personal interaction, communication, and engagement as much as I can throughout the class period/week/year. Sometimes it is just a high five, other times it is direction. The hard part is figuring out what they need. #tlap
A3: need multiple spaces in class - a) campfires, b) water coolers, c) caves - Ss should be doing most of the talking, refrain from giving your opinions, less focus on sit and get. #tlap
A3. Somehow we need to find a way to move away from a school culture of compliance and towards a culture focused on meeting the needs of ALL of our kids. #tlap
A3 I once had a Principal who told us we should be able to look at ourselves in the mirror & be able to say we tried everything-did everything-gave everything we had to help that child (each one) be successful. If we can look in the mirror and believe that with conviction😀 #TLAP
A3- I have found that first you need to build relationships and a culture that are both supportive and challenging. Get to know your ss so that you can build on their strengths and adjust for skills that are lacking. Workshop has helped with this as well as you all. #tlap
A3: By taking care of myself so I can better serve my Ss. Lots of checkins. Documenting with pictures. Knowing who they are and what their interets are! #tlap
A3: Take care of yourself, come ready to have your A Game on so that you can see when adaptions need to be made, differentiate even for one S. #TLap#BeTheOne
A3. Build Relationships first! Differentiate instruction per Ss needs! If Ss falls behind or has trouble, then work with them on prob. to bring them up to speed. #tlap
A3: Consider at least 6 ways to spread Intentional Positivity. https://t.co/EcjEgoaOGK so all Ss can succeed. Build a caring, compassionate classroom and school #tlap
#tlap Provide challenging learning experiences for every student. Set the bar high & through guidance and encouragement provide opportunities to build confidence. Help students learn to keep an open-growth mindset where they lean in to learning. Build a positive classroom culture
I changed majors and am curious what the percentage is who do the same. Seems to me if college is doing its job, you discover new things about yourself. Or maybe because K-12 didn't do that job? #tlap#BeTheOne
a2 I try to help my students to understand the difference between realistic & unrealistic goals. I took voice lessons for a few yrs but I just don't have a voice anyone wants to hear. Changed dreams: I still sing to my Ss & they know I love my job. #tlap
A3: Our classroom motto is, “Be good today and better tomorrow” as individuals (T & Ss) we have united under this mission & ask ourselves, “how can we bring the best out of each other today and tomorrow?” The growth process is tiny steps towards a common goal. #tlap#betheone
If you are a writing teacher or use Google Docs regularly, @ericcurts is sharing some amazing resources tonight. Just. Wow. I am bookmarking EVERYTHING. #ISTELitChat#tlap
A3: Always, always striving for this- -Trying to ensure the adults in the building are reaching out & making connections & positive relationships. At the last staff meeting, I asked Ts to reflect on anyone they had not yet made a connection with & to set this as a goal. #tlap
A4. For me it is simple. I look at my students and I think of my kids. I think would I want this for my own child. We must strive to create schools that we would be happy to send our own kids to. #Tlap#BeTheOne
A4 - Simple. By knowing that I may be the only one. The only one that cares. The only one that shows up. The only one that shows/tells them they matter, that’s it. #tlap
A3 I once had a Principal who told us we should be able to look at ourselves in the mirror & be able to say we tried everything-did everything-gave everything we had to help that child (each one) be successful. If we can look in the mirror and believe that with conviction😀 #TLAP
#tlap A3 Showing up. I finally figured it out when my middle daughter was in third grade.. being their voice when they don’t think they have one. Coaching, then letting them go when they’re ready..
A3: we try our best to differentiate our instruction, small groups, and one on one as much as we can. We look for every way possible to see that each S finds success #tlap
A2: Reminding my kids that we will shift and change throughout our lives, what we once wanted might not be what we want anymore, but to continually focus and work towards whatever you want currently. #Tlap
A3 - This question is one of the best. Opinions vary greatly, but the enduring answer is honestly loving your job. Without that, it’s impossible to even ponder success for every student. #tlap
A3 I have had students do a teacher evaluation. When we rewrite curriculum I ask their thoughts. The hope is that students feel comfortable to talk to me about anything. #tlap
A3: If you been listening to #stuvoice lately from march to march, then they've been inspired not only by circumstances, but by great educators to make a difference. It gives us hope, and during tough times, this is what we need. #tlap
The question often begins with work, as that is the directions they first think of... but depending on their answers we follow up with volunteer opportunities and hobbies. If the Olympics don't work for them, I encourage them to play out their passions in other areas. #tlap
Q3) be intentional and do your best to be kind, listen and bring your best self by being present. Sometimes the seeds you plant will be uncovered after your class. #BeTheOne#tlap
If I look in the mirror and can say I developed good people who didn’t do as well on the test, I sleep well at night. If I developed people who treat others poorly but do really well on the test, I don’t sleep at all. #tlap
A4: Taking alone time in the day to breathe, clear my head for a minute and rest. I'm at my best when I have some moments to recharge my introvert batteries #Tlap
A4 sometimes I have to make a list. Write everything down. Everything in my brain has to come out so I can be there for my students and my colleagues. #Tlap
A4 Rita Pierson "Every child needs a champion"
Watch it anytime you need to reminded how important we are in the life of our kiddos #betheone#tlaphttps://t.co/VXFri1cZu7
A4: I stay motivated by seeing the progress in my kids and seeing how they WANT to be at school. Also, by having positive and collaborative teaching partners. #tlap#betheone
A3 #tlap Never give up on them- listen intently and teach them how to think for themselves- as I say to my students “I am here not to teach you science but to teach you how to teach yourself science”
A4: Thankful for my PLN. Thankful for these "wells" each night that allow me to refill my bucket so that I can be even better, stronger, louder tomorrow. Above all else, thankful for @megan_hacholski and @MrPStrunk for helping to hold up my arms, daily. #tlap
I focus all my positive energy in being the teacher that reaches out to each student, especially the "ünreachable" ones so that they know they have at least one safe place, one cheerleader, one role model, on adult who has faith in them. I give my best #tlap
Thanks for the fun, pirates☠️☠️! I’ve got to drop anchor here and disembark!! Thanks for the sail!! Congratulations on Be the One, @sheehyrw !! Have a great evening, all !! #TLAP
A4: To stay motivated I turn to things I love, reading, exercising and hanging with family. Sometimes you just need to recharge to come back more motivated. #tlap
A4: Build your PLN. Try something new, like KAHOOT! every now and again. Use a prep time or ask for your class to be covered once in awhile so you can steal, I mean gleen ideas from coworkers. #TLap#BeTheOne
#tlap A4 I was reminded of this on Instagram earlier today.. Gen Colin Powell saying he didn’t have to be the best. He had to give his best. Do ask help of Ss and peers, give ‘me a chance to find then give their best. .
A4 my PLN inspires our teachers amaze me and our students warm my heart everyday. Seeing the faces of students gives me a great sense of motivation and purpose #TLAP
A4 I always tey to find the positive. It’s how we react to our days that help set the tone. My PLN & family always help me when I need it most. I also want to show Ss how to deal with their emotions, how to feel & work through their struggles. It’s ok not to always be ok. #tlap
A4- I look at the Ss have who flourished and grown; read the feedback from Ps and Ss- and then look at those that I still need to do more for- That's my motivation #tlap
A4: Twitter chats are huge for me. They help keep my morale high as I engage in conversations with various members of my PLN. Special shouts to #tlap#122edchat and #waledchat for picking me up when I feel down. @_on11@megan_hacholski@burgessdave
A4 it's the kids and the colleagues that need me to stay motivated, I just have to walk in and see the kids to remember why I'm there and what I need to do. That and lots of coffee, 😬☕☕☕ #tlap
A4. I just remind myself that I am making a difference in my Ss lives and my attitude directly influences those around me. If I'm not motivated, how do I expect my Ss to be? #tlap#watlap
Coach teachers through inclusive and empowering lessons that allow every student the opportunity to contribute and feel worthy. This is why I really encourage Project-Based Learning with groups of 3-4...all students get to play a vital role and witness their contributions. #tlap
A4: 1. Feed the teacher soul by finding PD that motivates and inspires. 2. Laugh with kids. They are what we do this for and laughter is always the best medicine. #tlap#BeTheOne
A4 I love my staff and students. They are my motivation. Who needs me to bring it today and I go in with all I have hoping to #betheone#tlap#makeamagicalmondaymemory
A4. When it is really hard...I visit the Kindergarten classroom. The hugs and high five and energy and smiles and enthusiasm for learning.
That re-kindles my spirit! #tlap
A4: It's easy. Remember why we're there. We don't have time to feel sorry for ourselves and have a bad day. They need us every minute of every day. #tlap
A3: For me, it has come down to having to personalize the goals of “success.” My Ss need to pass the class & state assessments. Those 2 goal posts aren’t moving, but there’s a huge field in between them for me to personalize student achievement during our 90 days together. #TLAP
a3 I try to help Ss understand that what they want right now might not be what's best if it is hurting their future. Self-regulation & delayed gratification are powerful skills. #tlap
A3: Know that getting to success is messy. Keep listening, keep asking / seeking answers the question(s) What do you need? What do you think? What will make the difference? How can I "be" for you? (ss/ tchrs/ admin/ coaches) #tlap
A3: meet them where they are. Invest in them and their learning. Find out what’s in their brain using a way they can communicate. If writing isn’t a strength, have them draw a picture and discuss it with them. Focus on what they’ve learned rather what they can’t. #tlap
A4 - Simple. By knowing that I may be the only one. The only one that cares. The only one that shows up. The only one that shows/tells them they matter, that’s it. #tlap
#tlap Personally I set intentions every morning before I get out of bed. I write encouragement sticky notes for myself & put them around my room. I mentally chant my mantra CPMRLT- calm, Patience, mindfulness, respond not react, listen intently and try new things today
A4: I need humor!!!! I have to find humor in things that might stress me out! Example...today was 1st day back from SB. Couldn’t find anything I needed this morning! Very rushed to leave house...but... #tlap#JoyfulLeaders
A4: Sometimes we need to step back, reflect, and reconnect with our “why.” I’m in that process right now. Helps to refocus me on keeping the kids at the center of all my decisions. #Tlap
If I wake up feeling weary due to student issues then I hang with Ss I haven’t connected with yet. When I wake up weary from colleagues then I hang out with passionate educators. It’s never failed me! 🤛🏼 #tlap
A4: I stay motivated by jumping on Twitter to grow and learn from my PLN. There are some days it is tough but after a day with chats like #tlap and #rethink_learning, I'm more motivated than ever.
A4) I stay motivated by creating #hyperdocs. I'm such a nerd, but creating makes me happy. And trying new strategies with my Ss. We learned how to create #BookSnaps and are in love with #GoogleDrawings. A great tool makes learning fun. #tlap
A4: I keep in mind my student's struggles. If they can get to school with what they have to deal with everyday. Then I can show up and do my best for them. They deserve that from me. #tlap
Remind myself to leave my problems at the door and focus in on the classroom and what the students need. I get on Twitter and I call my in person support network to see if they can give me a boost and vice versa. #tlap
Q4: Handle the toughest part of the day first! Teaches you confidence and a brave mindset. Find a positive, have a conversation with a trusted colleague to get yourself back on track. #tlap
A4: I go into each day with the idea that I might be the only positive for my Ss. They deserve me to always give 110%. When I’m struggling I turn to my PLN and the positive people in my life, family, friends, and coworkers. #BeTheOne#tlap
A4: Look into the eyes of your students. Remember why we're here, and why it's important. Let it sink in. Take a deep breath and let that drive you for a while. #tlap
A4) Decide how you want to be described after the school day ends. I never want it to be, “Mr. Moss was tired today,” or “Mr. Moss was out of it today.” I don’t have the luxury of disconnecting. #tlap#BeTheOne
A4: Having a colleague to talk to at all times! Video conferencing is perfect for that. As for motivating ourselves and children, we love working toward celebratory days like Percy Jackson days or professional days. #tlap
Q3. I think it is important to teach students that you should never give up! Even when something knocks you down you should just get back up and try again. #tlap
A4: Tough days usually involve other adults. I keep this in mind when working with Ss. Model empathy, compassion, kindness, but don't hesitate to use your voice, ask questions, take action when injustices are being served. #tlap
A4: To stay motivated for kids and colleagues I have motivational quotes/images play when my computer screen goes idle. It picks me up without even noticing! My students also keep me going with their creativity & laughter. They're pretty awesome! #tlap
A4: I surround myself with positivity. I connect with people who remind me of the great things we accomplish each and every day- I read books like #kidsdeserveit#Betheone#tlap . I collaborate with @khoggardGRT who helps make dreams happen!
A4: Take a deep breath, read a message from my “awesome” folder in my email, then write two thank you notes. Gratitude always puts me in a better head space. #tlap
I agree...Twitter helps. I can open the app and see motivated educators and educational leaders around the world in an instant. I can get quick, practical instructional ideas. It’s exciting and keeps me going on harder days #tlap
A4: Look into the eyes of your students. Remember why we're here, and why it's important. Let it sink in. Take a deep breath and let that drive you for a while. #tlap
A4 - While not everyday is the best ever. I feel comfortable saying that training your mind on being happy is the best way to stay positive. Repetition of learning and actions truly work wonders. #tlap
A4. To stay focused , I remember why I'm there.. It's for the Ss! To see the smiles on their faces, share their stories, laughter, to teach them! #tlap
A4: Never give up on yourself. Continue to learn and to grow. Stay hungry, stay curious, stay passionate. Always believe that you are doing what is best for kids. Trust in your colleagues, your PLN and your family. #tlap
A4: Fake it until you make it! Attitude is important and if you are learning and growing you can find something to be excited or passionate about. #betheone#tlap
A4 I try to remember that often times school is the only safe and happy place for many students. We as teachers have to remember that and keep that a reality; no matter what. #tlap
I love to meet with a teacher when something is frustrating them, because they're more willing to talk it out and get to the source of the problem. Ask them Why? 5 x's. I promise - you'll get down to the real issues. #tlap
A4: second hardest question (q3 being the toughest). Answer here is different for many of us. Our own ways of recharging. For me it’s creativity. Try to do a little every day. For example:
#tlap
A4: We all hit the peaks & the valleys. When in the valleys, I really go back to my base, the kids, to center me & remind me of my greater purpose. I am always energized & inspired by them. They keep me joyful! I also pray, pray, pray when at those low points. #tlap
A4: I think about the few teachers I had that never ever let me down and I want to do them justice- they are the reasons I became a teacher. I also think about what I would want in a teacher for my own kids. It helps me keep perspective.. also meditation as often as needed #tlap
A4:
I write affirmations for Ss and colleagues. I treat my dept to donuts, or something sweet. I read some YA lit just because. I email some positive Home emails. I let myself drink a Coke. I go to the art class during planning and do what @CKepler_WKMS is teaching. #tlap
I was telling my 8th grader how when I took a career assessment in 10th grade, "forestry" came out as an option. Nowhere close to my interest; I'm in communications today; I knew the reason was that I said I like being outside. So likes and careers don't necessarily align! #tlap
A4-Rejoice on the good days and find your tribe on the hard days. @Hdavisbaseball has been there through it all. Find the positive because it out ways the bad. Laugh and be silly with your people and be willing to try it again. #tlap
A4: Look into the eyes of your students. Remember why we're here, and why it's important. Let it sink in. Take a deep breath and let that drive you for a while. #tlap
A4 - Simple. By knowing that I may be the only one. The only one that cares. The only one that shows up. The only one that shows/tells them they matter, that’s it. #tlap
I heard a great quote last year: Try to make tomorrow a little better than today There is a lot of logic and wisdom in that phrase Don't beat yourself up after a rough day...there is always tomorrow #tlap
A4: My Ss and colleagues keep me motivated. The gazillion drawings above my desk, the happy email folder in my inbox, and finding three positives to wrap up my day. #sagecreeklrsd#tlap#BeTheOne
A4) As an administrator, I know once I pull into that parking lot it is GO time. Plus, I am always trying to learn new things through Twitter chats and reading. #tlap
A5 - I thrive on fear, if we don’t have fear, we’re not trying new things. If we’re not trying new things, how can we remain relevant for our students. #tlap
When I coached football I used to tell players that the practice field was the perfect world. They could leave their problems on the sideline and focus on doing what they loved. Great advice for passionate teachers too! #tlap
A4. I take some time, go to the gym and hanging out with friends to give me time to reflect on myself as an educator. I ask myself what's working, what's not working, and how can I improve? I'm new at twitter, and I can see the importance of having a strong PLN! #tlap#cuiedtech
A4: I seek out the most positive people at that moment and/or read a positive tweet. I also keep a basket full of positive notes, cards, etc that I’ve received over the years from Ts, Ps and Ss. Just glancing at them helps! #tlap
A4: I seek out inspriration with my PLN. There are endless amounts of positive comments and motivation I can find. Then, I listen to my favorite music. All is well in the world :) #tlap
Q4. I remember growing up and when teacher would get frustrated that would in turn make the students upset so that is what I think of to stay motivated. If teacher is happy then students are happy:) #tlap
A3: by realizing individual success is a real thing that is measured differently than a pass/fail grade. “Ladybug, you didn’t pass with a 70, but LOOK AT HOW BEAUTIFUL THAT 60 is compared to the 40 you made last time!!” #tlap
A5 What's the worst that can happen? We are not brain surgeons. If something doesn't work, we learn from it, reteach and move on. I have been trying lots of new things this year, and new #edtech. #tlap#betheone
A5: By doing it first, doing it with, or helping from the sidelines. I provide tips, tricks, copies of my stuff, whatever they need. Love when a colleague or #PLN#PLF wants to try something new! #tlap#BeTheOne
A4: I remember my WHY!!! It’s about my KIDS!!! It’s about making each day the best for them!! While I’m in that room with them... nothing else matters!! #Tlap
A5) say YES....be there to support. My go to line is “whats the worst that can happen? It fails and you reflect and learn! Sounds like a WIN...your fails are my fails! #tlap
A5 The key is to model it ourselves for others to see invite them into our classrooms when we try something new, creating a culture of growth in all we do provide support and encouragement to risk takers #TLAP
A4.2:
I’ll tell the Ss. I ask for help picking me up. We talk about what we like, why we’re there. We’ll do a Ms. A preferred activity which is usually fun for us all. #tlap
A4 #tlap Listen as a student, not as a teacher. Hear your voice as if you were hearing it for the first time. When you step outside of the malaise and see it’s edges you can conquer it- remember to enjoy what you do
A5: I work with a great team so am very lucky. If I want to do something a bit more off the typical path I model it and hope they will join in. #tlap#betheone
A4: find a way to draw from your passions. I am passionate about edtech and science, so if I'm "not feeling it" I find a way to incorporate some fun tech into that day. The Ss usually really appreciate it. #tlap
A5 Encouragement, also share experiences, and we have to model it so that our Ss do as well and know it is okay to try and fail, not ok to not try and never know #tlap
A5 I will always try to support teachers with anything they want to try. If they need help, I will make it happen. I never mind being the guinea pig. To try, to fail, to learn, to succeed, I will always put myself out there. Encouragement and celebration are key. All steps! #tlap
A5: I thrive with different. I find passion in helping others find their passion. It’s so crucial to show your students to be different. Embrace those quirks; use these differences to create change. #tlap
A5 I try to give them emotional support or materials they may need. I also try to explain you will never know if you don’t try. If it is best for kids, step outside your comfort zone and do it! #TLAP#BeTheOne
A5: I try to remind them Why we're trying new things - It's for our students. It's to help them reach their potential. Then I offer to help them reach their own potential & walk that walk with them. #tlap
A5: I usually hear this in regard to tech incorporation. I meet with the individual and show them how to do it. If it seems outside of their range, we look together for something within their range they may be more comfortable with. #TLap#BeTheOne
A5: Providw encouragement and support, but recognize that everyone develops confidence at their own pace. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about continuing to get better every day. #tlap
A4: I have a positive tattoo on one wrist and “Let Go” on the other. It’s literally imprinted on me to stay motivated for students and colleagues! #tlap
I hear you! In one of my first career assessments I got nursing...which is definitely not my thing! Hopefully you kept your like of "being outside" alive in a current hobby! #tlap
Honestly, I'm usually the one that needs encouragement. It definitely helps to hear from people who have been successful and what works for them! #tlap
A5 Share w/them a time I took a risk on doing something different & how it made a difference The only bad choice is the one we don't make, we learn from every other choice #tlap
A5 talk about Ss lives that they've shared with me / host @edcampPGH with enthusiastic educators that others can't help do anything but catch the bug #tlap#BeTheOne
A5: It's hard to try something different without getting the "alien eyes" (@awelcome) but it's important to try something new many times a year. When other educators need it, give them a positive push and let them know you support them! #betheone#tlap
A5: Sometimes in order to help folks into new areas they need to have someone to run alongside of them. We cannot expect everyone to be operating with the same level of passion as us. We have to be willing to spread the fire. I love getting to partner with others. #tlap
A5: I think it’s okay to say “I’m not okay!” Take a few minutes, recharge, reflect, consult, ask for help, then jump back in. One day, one hour atta time! #tlap
#tlap I help them visualize it. When I can ease their worry of trying something new by making it feel routine. I walk them through the details, demo it. I get passionate about it. Passion is contagious.
A5 I tell them ask for forgiveness, not permission. I had an amazing leader once @allin4marriage I asked him if I could try something. He said "is it good for kids?" Great leaders trust #tlap
A5: Help them come up with a few small steps. Be their accountability and support. Ask how it’s going. Add that “ask” to my calendar so I remember to check in. It’s all about taking a breath and beginning; I want to help teachers breathe & inspire. #tlap
A5: I'm a coach & have heard everything. Build a relationship with each teacher so they feel comfortable telling you why they are uncomfortable. Listen. Listen closely again to find out the real reason why they are afraid. Then be there for them as they take risks. #tlap
Ask what support they need or why they are afraid of. Offer support and see what I can do to support their ideas. I can also connect them with others who may have tried the same things in their classrooms. #betheone#tlap
A5 - I lead by example. I do a lot of different and weird things in my classroom and it has changed the culture in my department significantly. We are now a leader group for the school in a lot of ways and I could not be more proud. #tlap
A5: Have an open dialogue with the teacher to see what their fears are and provide tips that they can use or rather baby steps to get them to jump in. #tlap
A5- Be there to help in anyway. Encourage them to try. Show/share what you have done. Brainstorm ideas for them. Let them know it’s okay if it’s scary, you’ll be there to help them out. #TLAP
A4: I think it’s okay to say “I’m not okay!” Take a few minutes, recharge, reflect, consult, ask for help, then jump back in. One day, one hour atta time. #tlap#selfcare
A4: I make sure that I have not let my tank run low. How can I help others if I don’t care for myself? Self-care is vital. To stay motivated, I look to my PLN and remember that I chose a job where I care for kids. Plain and simple. #tlap
A5: I tell them how I am the same way, but am adopting the strategy of my principal, @ERobbPrincipal. When my mind says no for a change up for my Ss, I instinctively say yes. Has led to lots of innovation this year and a thirst to keep growing #tlap
A5: To help one of my coworkers try something new that they may be afraid of, I like to help them come up with a plan. Sometimes that little support is what it takes to help someone through, highlight their successes! #tlap
A5 Stand beside them! The best compliment I ever got as a coach was from another teacher who said thanks for standing beside me and letting me fail forward, but continuing to support and cheer me on! #tlap
A5: I compare it to a surgeon - he/she makes a wrong cut, we're in trouble but as a teacher what's the worst that can happen? Ss not engaged? Idea not working? Then move on - you learned something! #tlap
A5: I encourage others to take risks & #BeTheOne for kids!! I offer to help & assist along the way!! ALL of our kids deserve to have Ts who go above & beyond for them!! #Tlap
A5: When other educators talk about being afraid of doing something new/different I am sure to hear their concerns, provide them with a different point of view, and offer assistance in taking the risk! I find myself being a school counselor for all, not just for students! #tlap
