Great to see you this morning Latoya! Welcome to
Randy checking in from little league soccer fields in middle TN. I'll be here until my kiddos game starts.
A1: Right now I would say grades/assessments/scores etc. To be brutally honest.
A1: Most of the emphasis in schools today is on standardized testing to determine value of a child. 10-20% of total school time
Good morning . Toshila, JH AP, from Texas.
GM! sliding in late...guess I'll sit on the back row, so no one notices :)
Craig! Good morning! KS is repping strong!
A1: At my school defined by growth, academ & . We have tracking metrics for both
Seth from Tx excited to learn this morning!
Jane, Elem AP from MO, chkg in. Good morning!
The streets of KS are empty this morning! Every is at . representing!
efficacy just went up with Matt here!!
Welcome Teresa! Great to see you today!
always great to have you here Meredith!
A1) The reality is, it is too often defined by a single set of standardized test scores. We need to change that!
A1: Easy data would be graduation rates and college entrance.
Good morning Michelle, principal from Saskatchewan, Canada jumping in this morning.
Potentially TRUE! HAHAHA! https://t.co/eQz5RhKCwy
The streets of KS are empty this morning! Every is at . representing!
Potentially TRUE! HAHAHA! https://t.co/UNulUFdXhI
The streets of KS are empty this morning! Every is at . representing!
A1: Currently......Huge emphasis placed on standardized testing.
A1: Thankfully changing in KS. De-emphasis on test scores, greater emphasis on grad rates, post-secondary completion, Ind. Plans
True...I feel so lucky not to have standardized testing in our school - so much more time spent on learning
A1-For too many it's a test score. I'm teaching my Ss it's growth over time & how they're reaching their goals.
A1: Working very hard to move toward equating real learning & risk taking. PBL key. Using an engineering cycle mindset.
Morning, Laura! Thanks for all the help spreading the word about our chat this AM!
A1: unfortunately test scores, but I see it differently- growth measures and leadership are more meaningful to me
A1: Student success in changing from traditional to innovative, but not fast enough. Enough with the test-driven curriculum.
A1: Is success grades, standardized tests, compliance, or something else?
A1: We are a private Catholic HS near Chicago. Success is focused on college admission & scholarships ($19 million)
Traditional Ss Success is measured through standardized tests. is trying to change that culture.
Good morning ! Marci, Education Consultant from UT...ready to learn with you!
A1: Student success is defined through progress in a skill, strategy, & (get ready for it) testing https://t.co/SKxAEKDXyO
A1 That's being transformed in KS right now. Moving beyond defining by a score. Will take time to shift mindsets.
Hello, !! I'm Instr Coach in KC, Kansas. Much work/lpassion in KS around Student Success.
In MS, it's more than grades. They're trying to figr out who they are. Are they making good choices in all areas of their life?
A1 There can be many differences in how it is defined, depending on who is defining it.
A1) Our goal is to make our school a place where students want to come. We do this by empowering student voice and involvement.
A1) Globally student success too often is still a line rather than a circle. Data points rather than a whole child perspective.
A1. Presently, it is defined in our schools by student outcomes: assessment scores, accountability metrics, post k12 readiness
A1. Grades & Standarized test scores, unfortunately...
Good morning, Ashley! Thanks for being here, repping KS school leaders! https://t.co/G9VavFb3SX
Ashley Kappelmann, assistant principal from southwest Kansas joining this morning!
A1: I think it depends on the school, class, etc.
that was a nice game last night. Go
Love this! Curisou about the tracking metrics. Would love to hear more https://t.co/2yVJOs1ujy
A1: At my school defined by growth, academ & . We have tracking metrics for both
A1: We are shifting our view of S success as recognizing interests and potential and showing growth that best prepares them.
A1: Student success is defined differently from perspectives/shareholders. Unfortunately most outside the school see test score.
Standardized scores are the prevailing standard. I think districts are struggling to define just what it means for their Ss
Good morning Danae! Thanks for getting up with the tribe.
A1: Ss need to feel safe and that Ts care. Get that and their heats and you will have their minds. Then… https://t.co/DX5MkUVlS8
A1) Always based against some type of assessment. Right now data is the determining factor
A1. Ss success is a successful HS graduate has the skills to complete post secondary education & employability skills
A1: Achievement and progress, the latter being a more recent, yet important focus in terms of success.
Morning! Angelo, HS Principal from NC! Excited to learn with you all today!
Good morning Cyndi! Great to see you today at
Yes. And chances to show success are limited--thus the line and not a circle. In agreement!
A1: Largely by numerical process. However, many other non-numerical factors must be considered as growth/development.
From KS to Norway! is a global network of learning leaders! https://t.co/c4Cgn8v9wg
Greetings from Norway. Nice to join🖒
A1: Hopefully in growth / mastery learning terms despite distraction of KY schools pouring over high stakes test data this week
A1: assessment scores is what the majority look at. Unfortunately so... That only shows a little bit about a students success.
A1: It is defined by politicians in response to a public that views schools like when they grew up. Good kids=good grades
A1:If they made any progress from the standardized the year before.
Agreed! At my school too! Only 1x per year. https://t.co/ayRcnNEepb
True...I feel so lucky not to have standardized testing in our school - so much more time spent on learning
Welcome Ashley! Kansas is bringing the heat today!
Ben from England here looking forward to the chat
A1: while mindsets are shifting, unfortunately grades & test scores.
S involvement is key to so many things. I think a lot of schools are seeing this diminish, athletics especially
A1 In MS it's more than grades They're trying to figr out who they are. Are they making good choices in all areas of their life?
A1 For some stu it can be defined as simply as getting them to school on a regular basis for others it is a much bigger story
Student success is demonstration of content mastery AND soft skills
You may win today for furthest distance! Always appreciate how chats brings us together.
Q1: we have a district BHAG we are using and starting to track data with: ACT, certificates, 3rd grade reading level, etc
A1: sadly with too much emphasis on poorly written standardized tests...
Good morning! Glad you could join today.
True... https://t.co/8f1hmeVYYq
A1) Always based against some type of assessment. Right now data is the determining factor
A1: In tx, most districts that I know of define student success as STAAR scores. Jobs are tied there, so Eds accept that def. .
A1. Defining student success may vary depending on who you ask. How would a parent define it?, a teacher?, a student?, etc.
Absolutely! https://t.co/PQ1zUbKiPE
A1. Ss success is a successful HS graduate has the skills to complete post secondary education & employability skills
Very much! There are so many factors. A successful kid in one place, may not be successful elsewhere.
A1: The move to include student growth as a measure of student success is definitely the right one. https://t.co/jdeKkz59Cm
Great to have you join today John!
A1 Unfortunately, Ss success is often measured by GPA, ACT scores, class rank, AP credits=culture of competition, not learning
A1: based on academics- what about social emotional intelligence. We aren't building robots! We need to focus whole child
Mike's helped already become reality in his school! https://t.co/LwwDAugF7J
A1) Our goal is to make our school a place where students want to come. We do this by empowering student voice and involvement.
Very diff to measure growth in those areas, but so important to teach making good choices. Ps need to reinforce
A1-less focus on ST assmt great news. Pre/post guide where S are growing, informal assmt gives info about S mindset & guides T!
A1 A few narrowly defined test scores, but that is changing in KS!
I hear you on that! Let the fun begin! Good to see you today at
A) In addition to athletics, our district supports a variety of after school clubs: walking, baking, Kung fu, scrap booking, etc
Good to see. It will take districts and communities to make this change...then legislators will follow
State policies grtly affect districts, supts, principals..& esp Ts/Ss. Convos re: stu success must include state impact
That is awesome! Thank you for joining us today.
Welcome to ! Glad you are here today!
A1: A T told me she felt like success used to be focused on what Ss knew, but now is on what they can accomplish.
Hi ! Stopping by for a bit. Kelley HS ELA and leadership T from MI.
It is hard to break that culture of "I know my kid is a success if they are better than another."
we keep it low-tech & free. spreadsheet style. Happy to share!
A1 Compliance. So much recognition for compliance. SOW is a big one.
A place where Ss want to learn, where they feel safe and develop social skills hand in hand with educational skills.
A1 progress in relation to benchmarks for academics but also progress in 21st century skills i.e.. effective com, collaboration
So true. Whole student teaching.
Preach it, Samantha Neill!!
NY's opt-out movement has given us an opportunity. Let's look learning in a new way.
Jumping in a little late... 😬
A1 student success is seen as using data to driven instruction to keep Ss engaged @ optimal performance reaching their potential
Edus in TX must make the choice to accept more than this. Students deserve better. https://t.co/4AfqVm1zqV
A1: In tx, most districts that I know of define student success as STAAR scores. Jobs are tied there, so Eds accept that def. .
Good morning! here, Assistant Principal and Lead Learner
A1 I would like it defined by the understanding of each student's so they know they all matter.
Our school motto is "Teaching Scholars with a Soul" Love that we focus on both aspects while teaching HS Ss
A1. With ESSA being defined doesn't each State have the opportunity to help define this? Isn't now the time for voice?
A1) success is measured by the smiles on faces as chn come in in the morn and leave in pm, with that all else falls into place
How "is" or how "should" it be? At state lvl I think we know.In "our house" we focus on student growth! Keep learning & growing.
What does that stand for?
looking forward to the read. Hope you are doing well, Aaron.
A1- we are strongly focusing on of students so they can have a say in their education
Exactly why we have metrics for both! https://t.co/llY0p3lGuV
A1: based on academics- what about social emotional intelligence. We aren't building robots! We need to focus whole child
A1:If they made growth from the standardized test the year before.
It will be cool when we figure out how to quantify "changed lives." No educator got into the business to raise test scores!
A1 Formative assessment has become the norm and charting progress among T teams is common.
And tchr voice changes state policies. :D https://t.co/y5AuhFU7Yb
State policies grtly affect districts, supts, principals..& esp Ts/Ss. Convos re: stu success must include state impact
So true. In EL it's skills, and HS it's grades, GPA. The reality is diff than the vision
Student success can be measured be the experiences and opportunities we are exposing students to and their response.
Excellent. If they don't want to be there, they won't learn
A1 student success begins with celebrating each and every victory. It's not just about test scores
Good morning! A little late, but I'm here! Jennifer, Kalispell, MT, 3rd grade teacher
Strive for "big picture" thinking as we measure Ss growth - PLC, Child Study Mtgs, P/T conferences - more than data points
A1. Accountability defines student success one way. It depends on who you ask,why you are asking, & what you do with the answer.
I define S Success by how quickly they run to class, attendance rates, & smiles on faces when S learn/create something new
A1) If we don't define success for our schools, someone else will.
I'm in NC, what types of changes are happening in KS?
A1) A shift is happening to enhance personalized learning opportunities for everyone.
Exactly. Greater emphasis on how a child compares to another rather than what he/she knows & can do w an education
Latoya is dropping questions for Rethink Success Part Two!!!! Way to lead up with questions! https://t.co/Fnr0XL360t
A1. Defining student success may vary depending on who you ask. How would a parent define it?, a teacher?, a student?, etc.
Our reality is diff than our vision. Things to work on, I suppose.
Thank you - I would love to see it.
Proficiency must remain a goal, as students who are not proficient are not ready; however, we must factor in growth, too.
A can help start/continue needed convos & education btw schools, parents, teachers, kids!
Good morning! Sarah, 5th grade, Cheyenne-a little slow this morning.
All the more reason for everyone to share their voice as ESSA is developed for each State. https://t.co/mNEGnFKuMF
A1) If we don't define success for our schools, someone else will.
Wow, is where it's at this morning! Thanks to and special guest for kicking out awesome Qs!
A2 How would we rank our S success if it was based on degrees of "Nice"?
A1 cont. NJ :-( .Op-Ed: What the Public Doesn’t Know Can Hurt Our Students, Our Schools - NJ Spotlight https://t.co/IoafQg5v2l …
A2: Student Achievement does not always equate to Student SUCCESS! Change the conversation!
Love this - you are so right children are NOT robots. https://t.co/WsDysZ3jwK
A1: based on academics- what about social emotional intelligence. We aren't building robots! We need to focus whole child
A1) Schools cannot continue to sit back and let others define us. We must leverage social media to tell our stories of success.
Agree! But others might still have a different definition than we do. https://t.co/cLYbZSqAbq
A1) If we don't define success for our schools, someone else will.
A1:True that test scores often define schools and Ss, but there are also authentic opportunities for both to show who they are.
Sorry I'm late. Delta Band Review is today. Can't tweet & drive!
that is why the C has become unacceptable for some. Need to change from Average to at gradelevel, or something.
A2: student success means the ability to think about and succeed in the world waiting for them post HS.
We had a sharp editorial eye! Thanks for helping us hone them, man! https://t.co/2oquzGW1pE
Wow, is where it's at this morning! Thanks to and special guest for kicking out awesome Qs!
A2: discussion, engagement, confidence, risk-taking, relevant instruction, problem solving, collaboration.....
And to get them in the door I think we need to offer variety of topics - just like Ts & Ss.
When Ss never look at the clock!
A1-What does your school/district culture? Your culture is what will define student success
A2: Ss who find their passion and accomplish and achieve more than they ever thought possible for themselves.
TRUTH 💯 https://t.co/RpCv720Kjn
A1. Defining student success may vary depending on who you ask. How would a parent define it?, a teacher?, a student?, etc.
A1: There are different types of success. Also, good grades don't always equal success. Ss know how to play the game w/tests.
A2: it might be just getting to school, coming to class
A2 Ss talking about learning--what they learned, why, & how. Displaying their learning. Collaboration & relationship building
A2) Ss who say...
"We get to make...!"
"I figured it out"
"When can we start?"
"Can't wait for tomorrow"
"I did it!"
When the idea of more questions than answers is no longer overwhelming; rather, it is appealing. https://t.co/3a3T45Ruak
Q2: The widely accepted definition of success, may be very different than yours. Time to speak from the heart and s… https://t.co/Kl2Kh7hTAc
A2: Students being assessment capable learners and teachers who who are innovative
nothing wrong w/ assessments, but what kind and what purpose MUST match
And we really need to reframe what it means to succeed. It's not about a test score. https://t.co/wwmjvy3gxa
A1) If we don't define success for our schools, someone else will.
A1: student success is based so much upon standardized testing scores and reading levels. It should be about personal growth
Great- State assmt is not holding such value. Success defined by T and S together as they conference/goal set & reflect
It's easy to hone when they're already spot on!
A2: increasing attendance, decreasing referrals
A2: Success looks like small victories ... it looks like ... a brighter future.
Phillip, connect with me and I will explain the revolution! https://t.co/UjTz4d0sjZ
I'm in NC, what types of changes are happening in KS?
A2) Excitement when reached a goal. Smiles when understanding a concept. Confidence when leading & teaching others
which is okay. But we have the ability to leverage tech/social media to be the real authority on our schools
A2: Student success looks like growth w/ individual goals, supports, & help. Improving in what they need at an appropriate pace.
A2 Ss learning to set and meet personal SMART goals (long and short term) https://t.co/LfCXcr7wzn
Q2: The widely accepted definition of success, may be very different than yours. Time to speak from the heart and s… https://t.co/Kl2Kh7hTAc
A2 it varies. For some, it's showing growth on a test. For others, it's remembering to breathe & stay calm when stressed.
A2. Student success to me is when students clearly have connected their passion to their purpose to fulfill their destiny. 🤓
A2: a student who can, alone or collaboratively, extend some info to generate a new thought/idea/product. Extend learning
Good morning - Don - Long Island - Sorry I'm late
A2: to some students success might be ability to get a job, or flourish in college or change the world!
Agree 100% https://t.co/C8sLAfs3E6
A2: student success means the ability to think about and succeed in the world waiting for them post HS.
A2:Changed behavior, changed misconceptions, and closed gaps. Doesn't always look like met standard by state.
A2) Success, to me, looks like 290 graduates who are PREPARED to pursue 290 DIFFERENT lives. https://t.co/Xr1hXmg4OR
Exactly, what kinds of successes are impactful!
Agreed. KS leaders have listened to schools, parents & business leaders. Big shifts tak… https://t.co/bKl8yX2fG7
And tchr voice changes state policies. :D https://t.co/y5AuhFU7Yb
State policies grtly affect districts, supts, principals..& esp Ts/Ss. Convos re: stu success must include state impact
A2: Students who can ariculate how they matter, things they like, and what they can really do - knowing they can more.
Success = meeting the students social/emotional needs & providing new opportunities/experiences for Ss in addition to learning
A2: Ss not only demonstrating knowledge through assessments but also applying that knowledge to create, solve and innovate
I so agree! Good test takers don't always do well in life. Know each S individually & support their talents
comparison raises such big issues. Good point.
A2) Engagement (I care), Empowerment (I can), & Efficacy (I will) ... with that you have everything!
Compensation for teachers is based off some of these things. Teachers are forced to focus on scores.
A2. Student success feels like students clearly can articulate their contribution to make the world a better place.
In an ELA classroom success is Ss confidently harnessing their ideas and passions across multiple mediums of expression.
A2: Ss and Ts talking, about other things than school - Ss WANTING to be in class - Ts WANTING to be around their Ss.
A1: Student success= engagement. "What are you trying to figure out right now?" is best Q to ask
A2 Ss success to me is when Ss find their talent(s);hone their skills to make a difference in themselves or their community
A2: That sense that S's are walking across the stage in May, boldly confident in THEIR future. They OWN it, and they KNOW it.
Yes! https://t.co/P61Q3Wk4U0
I define S Success by how quickly they run to class, attendance rates, & smiles on faces when S learn/create something new
A2: Do students leave school more excited than they were when they walked in? If the answer is YES, you are having success.
Smiles, showing others thr work, setting new goals, enthusiasm, continuing to grow in achvmnt, parent pride.
Love that! https://t.co/zyqNU5r9fk
A2. Student success to me is when students clearly have connected their passion to their purpose to fulfill their destiny. 🤓
A2) The "light bulb" look (when you can see a student get it), an "Oh!", having the student correctly explain it to others, etc.
What measures are used 2 know students are on track for demonstrating growth and learning by the end of the year?
A2: Success in my eyes is them knowing they can go out and change the world.
A2: Student success is when kids are highly motivated to learn, curious, and engaged in authentic ways. Keep them curious.
A2: Watching that light bulb shine brightly. Hearing bold risks takers deploying a strong brand of explosive curiosity.
A2: participating in a discussion, raising hand for 1st time
A2: for me it is about relationships of all in system. If we have vulnerability, trust, and love, S's will succeed.
A2: for me it is about relationships of all in system. If we have vulnerability, trust, and love, S's will succeed.
True! Success generally breeds more success. Celebrate at every opportunity. https://t.co/p8f2Ujg4ey
A1 student success begins with celebrating each and every victory. It's not just about test scores
A2: Comes down to Responsive Culture. Are we getting MORE kids to work with MORE staff in DIFFERENT, IMPACTFUL ways?
What if a grade was based on how the student improved or added to the class as a whole?
Love this! https://t.co/UzLVDps7Qv
A2: Ss not only demonstrating knowledge through assessments but also applying that knowledge to create, solve and innovate
A2: I think the fact that they show up smiling and ready for the next challenge each day is a great indicator of success
A2: student success is not a 100% on a test in all Sts. I measure success by the growth of each individual child at their pace.
Success also is Ss and Ts who are so excited about what they are doing that they can help but serve and lead others!
A2: Student success looks like the light bulb just went off. Students finally understand a concept after some time of struggle.
A2: Success looks like: a school where all kids feel connected and valued.
A2: Success = opening doors & windows for every child. We need to share other views & prepare Ss to recognize & take opps.
KARA WARREN!! How are you? so glad you're here on the amazing .
I agree https://t.co/ChLmIDClXQ
A2: Student success is when kids are highly motivated to learn, curious, and engaged in authentic ways. Keep them curious.
Yes, for sure, telling our own story so important.
A2 Student success is seeing Ss smiling entering school & hearing excitement in S voice as they describe their day as they exit
A2: 1small part of success is engaged stakeholders who know the "why." Clear communication.
would love to see/hear more about this. Vision is great, wondering how it's implemented in schools.
A2. Student success feels like an authentic sense of belonging, purpose, & passion. Being ok to do what you love-no matter what.
A2: Navigating relationships with and experiencing purpose in learning!
A2: Ss help define and articulate their success & competencies - ❤️️ to hear more discussion on micro credentials
A2 This is about NOT wasting TALENT. .
How do help kids find meaning & purpose in this world?
https://t.co/gVksJ5hIqM
Teacher pay should never be determined by scores. This reality for Ts in other states is sad.
Yes! https://t.co/8JNMzNE58A
A2: Student success is when kids are highly motivated to learn, curious, and engaged in authentic ways. Keep them curious.
A2: When our accountability system doesn't produce a bell curve.
I LOVE Saturday mornings, just for this ! I am doing great, how are you?
Totally agree! Assessments must be aligned to standards & must truly measure student learning.
A2: Student success is embodied in an I can and I will attitude
A2. Successful students have thoughts about achieving their goals which translates into happiness. https://t.co/ipCNbazHyb
A2 S success based on ind. progress related to current function/level: acad. SEL, competencies (grit, curiosity, flex thinking)
Every child can be successful! We just have to find their gifts and talents.
A2: passion and excitement! Students engaged, learning, and having fun!
A2 Students success can never be measured by one tool, one test or in any one shot assessment.
Yes!!! https://t.co/Li6zrCXOPE
A2: Student success is when kids are highly motivated to learn, curious, and engaged in authentic ways. Keep them curious.

I agree but listening & lifting others up w/ positive FB helps create positive school culture
one of my charges this year. Buy in has been hit or miss
A3. We can pose the right questions. Is the way we are defining success driving the behaviors or results we desire?

Our commissioner's answers to these questions get me excited about our future! https://t.co/VtmnSeMBAQ
A3: We must first value the voice of the teacher. Teacher observation of behavior and skills has become undervalued in schools.

A4: Can't forget to check in with our graduates after they leave. They can most accurately tell us how well we prepared them
reflection is huge. How are we incorporating that into the assessment. I get it so much better after the test.
Q4: Self assessment helps Ss have perspective and see their own growth. That's what we want them to do when they leave our walls
IMO, one of eds great failing is push to use #'s-only data. Not treating narratives as valuable is unforgivable.
A4: Key is having data in Ts hands & teaching them how to use it. Formative assess tools like

A4: Do they have necessary soft skills? Are they healthy humans?Did we prepare them for what THEY want to do after K-12.
Or annectodal information. Describing what success looks like is such a positive.
A4 Multiple data pts, work from Ss' strengths, goal setting, determine next steps learning, reflect, form. assessments, repeat
A4: the hardest part of our defs of success is convincing parents that failure is involved in every step but the last. Thats ok

Yes. Ss wrote the community goals & personal goals they own them & self monitor & behavior is great & engaged
A4 Success is when all kids have hope and a future.
A3: Make a compelling case then align beliefs w/ daily actions. Textbook answers & framed statements are nice, but not enough.
Q4: Has anyone heard of Dot Day? It's reminiscent of our conversation.
Agree. My Sup. constantly asks if our students would be there if they did not have to be.
Absolutely agree. Love w/ Accept challenge to improve when invited to change practice.
A4: Material must have real world application & projects to showcase learning objectives.
and there's always always always a living breathing small human being at the center of that data.
We need to trust that Ts recognize & can evaluate S success, but there's a huge lack of trust in T ability
What an amazing thing here! Thrilled to be participating!
Exactly! We need to shift thinking from focusing on Ss deficits & start w/their strengths & passions.
Remember this, folks....
Latoya, good thing I don't have a quota on retweets. HA! https://t.co/mBkpmpxeId
A4. Data can help us navigate the journey and meet the goal. I love data...but in the end there is ALWAYS a story to tell!
great point. That vertical dialogue has to be in place or we are pulling in diff directions. That's bad for Ss
Love it! What do we want them to be able to do? How will we measure it? Backwards design! Awesome!
A4) UDL- If we want to know what Ss know, then we need to remove barriers that keep Ss demonstrating their knowledge
Kristin, 5th grade teacher, aspiring admin, jumping in between mom duties, loving the learning from
A4: In Q1 I was thinking that. Data points 1yr after, 5yrs, and 10yrs, would be very telling! https://t.co/QQu4iJ85GM
A4: Can't forget to check in with our graduates after they leave. They can most accurately tell us how well we prepared them
A5: I use Twitter in my class and have Ss give S/O about their individual book they read - in place of… https://t.co/VGp3XNfhaz

Q4: We must look forward as well. Look the students over time. Did they maintain practices/knowledge?
A4. Have 2agree! Just as Ss R individual learners, their success should also B individual. The journey that counts.
We talk about turnaround strategies. Best idea is building positive culture for Ss!
SO TRUE! https://t.co/X6waiPzDYy
Yes! People bond when they're challenged together instead of challenged to compete and compare!
A4) UDL- If we want to know what Ss know, then we need to remove barriers that keep Ss from demonstrating their knowledge
A5: A couple tools that need to be better utilized when defining Ss Succes - Student Voice, Teacher Voice & Local Control

A5 We have been missing an important component: S voice--what would they say success looks like? How do they want to be measured
THE DOT is a perfect connection with S success!
A5: I don't always know what my tool to measure success is until we get started - different needs require different measures.
We can and must open more lines of communication with our Ss. https://t.co/oP4DZ9MDoC
A5 We have been missing an important component: S voice--what would they say success looks like? How do they want to be measured
I love this! A new quote for my door Rachel. Thank you.

Wow. Kudos to you. I'm going to DM you about . Rock on, Carla and team. https://t.co/F0AVIrVApW
Yes, we're going to try it again in a few months implementing the ideas we brainstormed
Yes. Take risks, innovate, creTe authentic & active learning experiences. This will ignite the imagination in Ss
Totally agree! Understanding we R doing this 4kids should be the focus. Not egos!
Student success cannot be adequately cultivated or measured without a collaborative school culture. https://t.co/osovbfWChk
Maybe we should also include 'What do they want to be able to do?' as a part of the conversation
BETHANY HILL! How are you? Have a magnificent weekend. :)
In the end isn't success as simple as "I'm happy, I'm fulfilled, and I have the skills to make a great living wage?
A5: The type of success we know is best for kids scares some because much of the data would be qualitative, harder to analyze.
Q5 On road to rethinking success... What is the biggest obstacle facing us right now in rethinking student success?
I look forward to hearing from you!
Q5 On road to rethinking success... What is the biggest obstacle facing us right now in rethinking student success?

As a principal, the data told the story of our work in 1 way, but challenges we worked thru aren't given justice on a graph.
A4. A strong relationship between Ts and Ss, where communication helps the Ss know where they are and are heading.
A5 Fighting with an "I don't really care" attitude in some cases. Anyone know anything about "Mind Up" Curriculum?
Absolutely! https://t.co/sOVPHt3Npl
In the end isn't success as simple as "I'm happy, I'm fulfilled, and I have the skills to make a great living wage?
Yes! Always reaching out 2industry leaders 2get opinions and their thoughts on what I need 2prepare my Ss 4future.
A5)
The biggest obstacle to any change is fear ... understand, empathize, educate, and help others' overcome fear.
I think that is the Lag measure. What are the leads that will influence the Ss to get there
A4: Ss engagement, goals, growth, awareness, passions, and observation.
Thank you everyone, so inspiring today, I have an appointment with my kids and waffles 😀
A5: The type of success we know is best depends heavily on the telling of the school's story.
Agree! We can't build anything sturdy on weaknesses, need a solid foundation of strength
Growth is a choice so involving students in setting their growth trajectory is fantastic!
Continuing to push us to get better! Can't wait! https://t.co/eu7trmFXg4
A5: Don't wait for the fed gov or your state to give you permission. Lead now. Create the change for kids.
Ts need to see Ls roll up sleeves & work the problems with them.

A5: The type of success we know is best depends heavily on the telling of the school's story.
A5) Focus on what is best for Ss and not what is easiest for me.
As a parent, that is my hope for my children. All students deserve this hope. https://t.co/VdmKwSx9jC
In the end isn't success as simple as "I'm happy, I'm fulfilled, and I have the skills to make a great living wage?
A5: Don't be afraid to fail forward
Just be careful not to throw too many tools at them at once. Definitely agree w/ choice of tool though
so how much of our Ss success is measured on them telling their stories?
A5:Allow Ss voice, encourage innovation.Cannot be afraid to take extra steps to ensure Ss success!Step outside the box!
I think many are afraid to take risks. Need a safe & supportive env for Ts to innovate & collab for a common goal-Ss
A5: Changing the mindset of some that are still focused solely on Ss scores. https://t.co/m1ZYZapt75
Q5 On road to rethinking success... What is the biggest obstacle facing us right now in rethinking student success?
Love this idea! https://t.co/7gEPgTfUCI
A can help start/continue needed convos & education btw schools, parents, teachers, kids!
The hard work teachers do daily deserves a story. It deserves one that tells of the joy, struggle, & overcoming of obstacles.
I agree. My point was just to use the tools that best support and showcase learning, in the broadest sense. 👍
You do not know how much they know, until you show how much you care. https://t.co/5BDIb6mfbh
Including the Ss is key. Just like adults, we give them a genuine reason to care, we give them a genuine reason to try
We just did it in August, be ready to have your world rocked!
has me excited to watch what's happening in KS! Great tweets this morning in about mind… https://t.co/x5ItRtmcb6
In the end isn't success as simple as "I'm happy, I'm fulfilled, and I have the skills to make a great living wage?
A5. Let the S take their ideas further and celebrate thm when they do
A5: We know when students are a success. Why is it that we have to tweak other things to show how successful Ss are?
is excellent start 2map out how to see success w/ your plan. I highly recommend anyone submit their idea
Yes! Remembering that we R learners. Think of self as a student. Asking questions, trying 2understand,curiousity
constraints put on teachers and the one size fits all mentality.

Kimberly! Love to talk with you about .
A5: sometimes I create my own obstacles with self doubt and fear of failing. Just have to remember failures are part of success
A5 Ss self-assessment. In order to be life-long learners they must be able to recognize where they need to revise & improve
A5 biggest obstacle to student success isn't mindset; its complacency & apathy-- accepting that the status quote is ok
A5 <--- Face I make at old habits and dated dogmas. They are obstacles to redefining success in schools https://t.co/TBusBp7zr4
A5 Obstacles to changing S success: isolation. Lack of collab. amongst sectors, every1 must be in on conversation on S learning!
A5: We teach how we were taught. Parents measure success how they were measured. Obstacle in breaking cycles.
A5: As is often the case, the greatest obstacle is the discipline and commitment to change. Excuses are the enemy of solutions
Follow me back and I can DM you. :) Look fwd to learning about your passion and work in education.
Q5 Fear of change but with authentic data, student individual plans, industry feedback, and teacher creativity we can do this!
A6: Looking at my classroom, what changes can I make, to change what success looks like. Lots of convos with Ss.
We all learn from our mistakes everyday! Thanks for modeling this for us 🤗
A5. Mindset. What is our mindset when it comes to defining student success?
Agree! Cant wait. Disservice to our present Ss in our classrooms. Need to change NOW or we will loose them.
A5. Parents often struggle w/ & resist the new way of tchng/ grdng, we as T need to keep pushing through
A5: individualize to the student. Have the student help develop their measure of success.
Powerful transparency here⬆️! Also helps to be in a building that supports Ts risk taking!
A5 When we step out of our comfort zone we are pushed to see the clarity of our choices. Innovate to make a diff. Stu first.
A5: Obstacle? = History of Ed!Parents, law makers and some T say"this is how I was taught so it must be good." Kills Innovation!
Yes, Kelly, it was intentional. Totally intentional. Not. https://t.co/RTkSOlPwUN
We all learn from our mistakes everyday! Thanks for modeling this for us 🤗
A6: 1st step - give up what I want in a lesson. Make it about what Ss need and if that means tossing it, then so be it.
A5. I believe students deserve a voice in how we define success. After all, it is THEIR success we're defining. 🤓
Yes, it scares them and fear is hard to overcome
Success?

A6 Setting up the right culture and the foundational structures should be #1. Don't biodiesel g your house on sinking sand!
A4 greatest tool to help measure Student success is our ability to collaborate;to look past the numbers & see Ss as individuals
A6 Take stock of where we are. Identify our goal, build consensus among people and resources that are vital to our success.
Next wk, Ts in my bldg will join the movement. Commitment to practice/ invitations for real time feedback Excited!

A6 become informed and establish a vision uninformed=inability to woo others
A6: focusing my energy on conversations about what students can do, rather than what they can't. Celebrating small achievements
A5) It is a paradigm shift to move from a factory model of learning to an individualized model. Bring along the community.

A6: my first step is collaborating with my students more and giving them choice!
A5 "This is the way we've always done it" phrase & long held traditions. The dialogue must change& it is!
A6: Starting conversations. We start each PLC talking about successes with students that week.
Great point! Leaders need coaching too!
Awesome chat,
I am a fan of you!
A6) Engaging my staff in this very conversation.
A6: First step is thinking what success is. Is it just good grades? Collaborate, share ideas, hear all voices - a team effort
A6: Move "I can" statements forward - have Ss answer "now that I can ___, I can apply it by ___." Combine knowledge with action
A6: continuing the conversation. I am not at the school, so I need to listen and nudge when there is a chance.
A sacrifice that we all make because we are passionate about Ss being a success in school and in the future.
Rock on, Randall Rank! At every level, it's about shared leadership and vision/goals! https://t.co/FOOMZCWS0y

Got to get going, thanks for another great today , , thanks for joining in!
we have a couple Ts who started it this week. Vulnerable
A6: First step = continue trusting my gut. When I question what I know is best for kids, we fall into tradition, not innovation.
Have to jump out. Have a wonderful weekend everyone.
A6: First step: Asking others what success means to them. I am curious to know what responses will be!
A6 use data to help identify areas of concern, then talk w/ Ss to obtain qualitative information behind the quantitative numbers
A6: Talk with kids about success. Share your successes and failures as appropriate. Create culture that leaks out of your room!
A6: Ignore "noise" of negativity and complacency. Remember who I am and my values. Tune out those who accept mediocrity.
A6 Immerse myself into the audience role & observe the stage of collab & engagement & Stu learning applause & encour
Thanks to for showing the way, modeling, and being a connected state level leader today at . Thx
A6: the first step is being brave enough to try something different in front of you Ss and peers.
