Run by Iowa educators, #IAedchat is on Twitter the first, second, and third Sundays each month at 8:00pm CST. We have added #IAedchat LIVE to the fourth Sunday of the month at 8:00pm CST. This will take place in Google Hangout on Air. We will share the invitation and link to #IAedchat LIVE each month.
Good evening, #IAedchat. Dan Butler, principal of #eesbobcats in the Western Dubuque School District. Excited to engage with all of you tonight. Let's do this.
We are interested in this for guidance towards preparing your future teachers. It will also be useful as direction for your coaching and PD in your schools. #iaedchat
Hello, I’m Robert Berntson. I’m a sophomore elementary education major at the University Of Northern Iowa and I will be at least observing but hope to put some input in this chat as well! #iaedchat
A1: Our new teachers & our veteran teachers are embracing technology as they feel comfortable and utilizing it as they see appropriate. We have offered professional learning with our district tech staff in the past as well as our building tech leaders. Right place/pace. #IAedChat
A1: The new teachers coming in to our district often become the leaders with all things related to technology. They have skills because they are going through school using lots of those skills as a student in college.
#iaedchat
A1 I believe they are but I also believe we could do more in the induction process to assist them in programs we are specifically using in our schools #iaedchat
A1: no, but I do think that is changing with the influence of more #edtech courses. There are foundational skills Ts should come in being able to do and know. #iaedchat
A1. The new teachers have some tech skills but we spent a lot of time in our new teaching training discussing Blended Learning and rigor/relevance. I did this and plus we had some veteran teachers explain it too from their roles. #IAedchat
A1: I believe we've got quite a bit of work to do for all educators to be really using technology to be the accelerator to learning. From a basic needs standpoint, yes, but to truly accelerate instruction, no. #iaedchat
A1 I think new teachers are coming prepared, but I think we need to do a better job supporting them in all of their learning and instruction, not just technology skills. #iaedchat
Q1: I'm sure many teachers who have graduated within the past 5-10 years are more advanced in their ed tech skills, but while I was in school, many students knew more about technology in the classroom than the teachers themselves. #IAedchat
A1: When I was a coach a few years ago, our new teachers were pretty fluent in tech skills but were also willing and able to learn new things too. That’s the best skill to have, in my opinion. #IAedChat
A1. The new teachers do have technology skills, in their student teaching in whatever school district, they gain experience using tech in lessons as they teach. #iaedchat
They often know how to use different types of programs and apps to get the right "product" from their students, as they often used them for college projects of assignments. #IAedChat
Understanding purpose of tools with pedagogy mixed with basic computer skills (one might be surprised how many DONT have this). I wonder how much of the #edtech courses infuse with the Ts content focused courses in college..#iaedchat
Hello Jay, pleasure to be sharing ideas on #iaedchat with you. Would you say we are possibly focusing so much on technology now that we are missing other important pieces of instruction because of it?
A1. New teachers are starting out so much more comfortable to dive into new classroom technology. They are willing to help out veteran teachers who are not as comfortable. #iaedchat
We need to provide them mentors and coaches to assist them with content, classroom management, and procedures as well as an administrator who provides effective feedback regularly. #iaedchat
Q2: Since technology is such a huge part of today's society, I feel teachers need to know basics, such as running a smartphone, laptop, or tablet. They also should know how to use apps efficiently and troubleshoot to keep class moving if there is a technical issue! #IAedchat
A2 I really feel I expect them to have basic google skills in forms, sheets, and docs. But the biggest thing they need is to be willing to learn and explore on their own. It has to be intentional in this day and age to keep up #iaedchat
A2: It is necessary to collaborate on documents in the cloud. Having a basic understanding of spreadsheets and simple formulas is helpful for organization and efficiency. The biggest skill is the willingness to try and learn. #IAedChat
Hello! I'm a high school English teacher from Texas. I think new teachers should know how to use Google Drive, PowerPoint, Word and other basic computer skills, as well as be willing to learn new programs with the rest of us. So many things are new every year. #iaedchat
A1: Based on what I’ve experienced in high school, the newer teachers did have lots of new skills to try out. I found that the newer teachers were implementing these skills and students were engaged with the change of pace. #IAedChat
A2: I would expect they know how to leverage tech for higher impact student and parent engagement. I would hope that they can be a voice for how to utilize tech meaningfully but I see experienced teachers doing this, too. #IAedChat
A2: Google everything - collaboration at its finest. Apple TV, projector hookups. Simple problem-solving around computer issues (connectivity, network hook-ups, etc) Social media as a tool for collaboration and learning would also be great! #IAedChat
A2. effective pedagogy will always be more effective than tech - but it is how we use tech to deepen learning, connect real world experiences thru blended learning at appropriate times that is important. We can teach the tool - we need them to understand the "why" #IAedchat
A2: The basics of all tech, since that is what our society is full of, as well as being willing to put the time and effort in to try new things with tech.
#iaedchat
Many teachers didn't know how to use the G suite in regards to sharing documents such as documents, google slides, spreadsheets, etc. Troubleshooting was the biggest thing we taught our teachers. Many didn't know what to do when a screen froze or internet didn't load. #iaedchat
A2b someone mentioned they need to be able to build a PLN and I think that is great. They need to be able to tell their story and the story of their district #iaedchat
A2 The best Ed Tech skills for new teachers are the ability to continue to learn and to find technology tools for creation and engagement and personalized. #iaedchat
Q2: Teachers should be familiar with all things Google, 1:1 strategies, and collaboration tools. They need to be comfortable exploring and keeping up to date with the latest technology tools. THAT is how we keep our students engaged #IAedChat
I’m not sure what that all entails, but I’m sure it has to do with learning all of the ins and outs of #GAFE. It would probably be a good idea for us all! :) #IAedChat
This is huge! I think so many continue to focus on “the latest and greatest” without understanding purpose and pedagogy for integrating some “SuPeR CoOl” #edtech tool #iaedchat#techypetpeeve
A2: a new skill .... seeking feedback. Everything is feedback to a new teacher - likes on social media - feedback on a video game . I expect them to seek that same feedback teaching. #IAedChat
We have mentors and coaches in our district that support all teachers. It starts with a relationship that promotes learning and two way conversation. #iaedchat
We definitely need to analyze the tools we are using and make sure they are enhancing student learning, not just using technology because we should.#IAedchat
A2.2: It's humbling at times when I have to ask for help with Promethean boards during professional learning. I consider myself pretty tech savvy but there are elements I don't use often given my role and so it's a growth mindset moment for me. #iaedchat
It is fun when technology can foster to the deepening of relationships with your students! Do you have any examples in which technology has been used to foster the relationships and connections made with students? #iaedchat
A3. I would like to help teachers get more comfortable with spreadsheets. There is a lot of power in being able to utilize the formulas and organization to make life easier. #iaedchat
A3: I am creating problem solving request workflows using Google Forms, Autocrat, and Awesome Tables for our job alike groups. Automation and consistency makes my heart flutter #nerd#ilovegoogleforms#iaedchat
Q3: As a student at UNI, I'm currently doing my Level 1 field experiences and will be teaching my first mini lesson this week in a 4th grade classroom. I'm going to be using QR codes so students can listen to an audio book related to the lesson! #iaedchat
A3. We are working with our teachers on a podcast, a blog with another middle school out of state and putting a 1:Learner device implementation into action. #IAedchat
A3:
I use google forms to do quick assessments.
I have student use Clips to create a video with their reading group projects.
I use video of our class to reflect on my teaching, and students reflect on their learning.
#iaedchat
In my #unietd Education Technology class, we explored Virtual Reality devices. The whole classroom was absolutely captivated! It was so exciting to me and I hope to implement these one day with my classroom! #IAedChat
A3: We have put some time into leading our technology ambassadors at #eesbobcats (@EesTechnology). Students assigned to share the story of our school while working on video projects and video editing to come soon. Recently they were recognized by the @TelegraphHerald#IAedChat
A3 I'm working with students on monthly video announcements from their perspective and not mine. The way I share our school story is different than the way they will tell our school story. #iaedchat
A3: Something that I really would like to teach my future students is applied writing, like how to write cover letters for resumes. Something we discussed in ETD is the application of QR codes to make resumes unique, which is a tip I will pass on #iaedchat
A3: New to my curriculum this year, so the door is completely wide open. I've got kids that want to use Minecraft, others who want to video, and some who just want to blog. Why not all?? :) #iaedchat
A3: I would like to shout-out one of my awesome teachers- @pattersonedu who leads our Coding Club as well as our Film Club. He's got 3rd-5th graders writing code, understanding the why behind the operations, writing, producing, editing a short film. #FutureReady#IAedChat
I took an awesome online class with @schma3 this summer and we dove deeply into what we could do with Sheets. “Doing More With Google Drive”. It was great and I learned so much! #IAedChat
A3.2: In the next two months, I will be leading a book study with interested fourth grade students. In between our face to face meetings, students will connect with me and their classmates through @Kidblog. #iaedchat
We just had our juniors create their own TV commercials on Adobe Spark while studying persuasive advertising techniques. All our students have their own Chromebooks this year, so we are exploring new technology every day. #iaedchat
Knowing what you want to do with the data makes the question much easier to answer. Basic formulas and knowing shortcuts should be foundational! #iaedchat
A3.2: I should also say, I am excited for our district as we go 1:1 in secondary grades. I am part of the device study group and we meet this week for the first time. Thankful for @crbarnum and @mrrydstrom and their leadership. #IAedChat
2/2 I could write for pages on the importance of a good, lively, unruly PLN. Mine consists of gardeners, environmentalist, politicians, parents, educators for all walks of life, authors, and coaches. I draw inspiration from their greatness every day! #iaedchat
My Ed Tech & Design class with @maggda allows us students to practice looking at and using ISTE standards. We talk a lot about how we can use them in the classroom in the future, as well as in our projects in our own classroom right now! #iaedchat
A4: After attending ISTE this summer in Chicago, I am learning where the standards fit. Some we were already doing well, others needed revamped or added. ISTE has some great resources. #IAedChat
A4: The @DLGWAEA team embeds and references the ISTE standards into their classes offered and presentations at a variety of schools and conferences. #IAedChat
Q4: My Ed Tech & Design class with @maggda allows us students to practice looking at and using ISTE standards. We talk a lot about how we can use them in the classroom in the future, as well as in our projects in our own classroom right now! #iaedchat
A4. The standards is something we spend lots of time reflecting upon as far as how they were implemented into activities. Very important part of instructional work. #IAedchat
Our district sent administrators to study at Google this summer, and they have brought back lots of enthusiasm and ideas for the teachers this fall. #iaedchat
The Chromebooks mean the students now have the ability to do research on their own as well as work more easily on projects outside of school. We can assign them to study vocab. words on Quizlet, for example. It's easier to type up their essays now. #iaedchat
A5. Digital portfolios is something we just started using as part of our hiring process. From our new teachers we have hired - I think it helped us to identify strengths and challenges more effectively. #IAedchat
A5 I think they can be a great part of the process but at the end of the day my conversation with applicants are the most important factor. Relationships are the cornerstone to it all #iaedchat
A5: I look at a variety of measures and submitted materials. I appreciate the time and energy it takes to put the portfolio together but don't rely on that as a sole source to inform me. They are great to get a glimpse of what a prospective teacher can produce/design #IAedChat
We also can do more online work with the Chromebooks. All my classes have at least some of their work on @CanvasLMS, so I can put resources, links, assignments and announcements on there. #iaedchat
A5: Digital portfolios are a great way to showcase work that you have done and could potentially tip the scales in a candidates favor if all other factors are equal. Video evidence of effective teaching is especially good. Many possibilities. #IAedChat
A5: They can be a great asset to add to the whole picture. I’d rather see it in action with a presentation with students or staff or referencing things during an interview. #IAedChat
A5) Speculating here…I think teachers are more in tune with #iowacore technology literacy standards than they are any subset of ISTE standards. #iaedchat
A5: This is clearly an aspect that makes candidates stand out. However, the contents of such portfolios is the difference maker. This is where universities need to collaborate w practitioners, aka principals. #iaedchat
Every once in a while, but more often than not, there was only enough time to skim the paperwork submitted as part of the application process. (Can’t speak for others though). #iaedchat
A5 Digital portfolios are only one aspect of an applicant's overall fit with our students. If possible, I'd rather have a candidate teach a lesson to our students. #iaedchat
Q5: I imagine digital portfolios are very important for those employers. My professor @maggda encouraged us to create professional twitter accounts so we can put it in our digital portfolio so future employers will see an applicant who stays up to date with technology! #iaedchat
A5. Digital portfolios are submitted and take time to complete. But what's really important, is the actual interview which is done by the site-based team and principal, along with Teachers. The actual interview gives a total picture! #iaedchat
Agree! Reference work in the interview or during a mock lesson. I’d rather spend my time analyzing a candidate’s digital footprint beforehand, to be honest! #IAedChat
A5 Digital portfolios are only one aspect of an applicant's overall fit with our students. If possible, I'd rather have a candidate teach a lesson to our students. #iaedchat
A6. Having someone show a new teacher the tech tools and what is Blended Learning is important; but more helpful is when we have them watch a vet teacher demonstrating how to use it and then giving them similar opportunity with feedback. #IAedchat
A6: Unless you are going to be a tech teacher, I don't think its a must have. I do think future teachers need to have someway to show their tech skills, but I don't think is necessary to have it as a minor.
#IAedChat
@JadenSeverson I agree completely! I do think taking INSTTECH 1031 has expanded my knowledge about HOW to use technology in the classroom and I am grateful for that #iaedchat
Q6: I don't feel the minor is necessary but I believe it would help applicants stand out and give them an advantage in the classroom! It shows they know how to integrate technology in the classroom and shows they accept it, because it is part of everyday life now! #iaedchat
Demonstrators use of diagnostics to identify learning/instructional student needs, team player, ex of growth mindset, ex of grit/work ethic. Not # of practicum hours. Applicants should sell themself as a teach instead of a recent grad. This could be a whole #IAEdChat topic.
My college edtech course was all about Word, PowerPoint, Excel. We did some work on webquests. This was 2005. What a different environment thirteen years later. #iaedchat
My college edtech class was in 1987, 31 years ago. There were few personal computers. The key is to keep learning, whether it's edtech or something else. #iaedchat
A6: Evidence of a learner would be more important to me. What has the candidate done to learn more to meet his/her needs? Conferences or workshops attended/presented at? Learning with PLN? #IAedChat
Q7: I think UNI's Teacher Ed program is outstanding so far! It has already taught me so much in my first semester in the program. I can't wait to see what else I will learn throughout the next two years! #iaedchat
A7. I think its important for new teachers to understand "its not about the tech tool - its about what are the kids doing with the tool. It needs to allow them to collaborate, create, go deeper (rigor/relevance). Tools will change - sound instruction will not. #IAedchat
A7: Could already be happening in some areas, but have those teaching the classes in Teacher Prep visit today’s schools to be updated and aware of what classrooms look like! #IAedChat
A7 I think providing as many opportunities to get into schools to learn from teachers and connect with kids is the most important thing we can do. Attending EdCamps would be a good idea, too. #iaedchat
A7: Be in constant communication with how tech is being used in the school districts around. See how they are using it, and what they would like their staff to know.
#iaedchat
#iaedchat Greetings colleagues from middle Tennessee! Teacher PREP the same in TN as IA. Lots of good work to be done! Prof need to get into classrooms and see what is happening! @TNedu
This is so important! There have been so many classes I've taken where teachers think because it is on a laptop or tablet, it will be more fun and interactive. Taking tests online are just as boring as taking them with paper and pencil! #iaedchat
A7 This one is easy prepare them for adversity and grit, give them more opportunities and experiences to learn, observe and practice good classroom management #iaedchat
A7: Personally, I think making sure that educators are aware of the beneficial technologies to better the world of education is extremely important. If we don’t teach our educators to grow with time, how can we prepare students for the fast-paced world we live in? #IAedChat
A7. Showing evidence of collaboration with other teachers, in both teaching and learning, scenarios inside the classroom what it would look like if.......! #iaedchat
The biggest thing I've gotten out of my time in the teacher ed program is it takes a lot of patience, grit, and compassion to be a "good" teacher and connect with your students! #iaedchat
Q7: Teach PLN building, teach relationship building, teach G-suite. After that, allow them to connect with students and teachers to see how tech can be infused, but how much time it takes as well. #iaedchat
Thanks to tonight's participants and my partners in moderating @danpbutler and @duffysclassroom! Don’t forget to bookmark our #IAedChat google site which houses an archive of these chats, our live chats, and resources! https://t.co/RDe0s53sQ5
We realize that this last question is enough for another chat. You can DM your additional responses to @zeitz or through zeitz@uni.edu or share them later using #iaedchat
I’m thinking my edtech class at UNI focused on opaque projector, feeding 16mm film into machine and rewinding it, ditto machine, micro-fishe (ps?), and changing overhead protector lightbulbs. #truth#evolution#IAEdChat
My college edtech class was in 1987, 31 years ago. There were few personal computers. The key is to keep learning, whether it's edtech or something else. #iaedchat
A7. Expose pre-service teachers to as many tools as possible during the Ed Tech class that they take. Have them interview an existing classroom teacher to see what is being used in the classroom. #iaedchat
Love this idea of getting pre-service teachers to EdCamps! So many fluid and organic ideas floating around along! This is another great place for PLN building! "Hey, I know you on Twitter and now can put a face with that user name!" #iaedchat
Thank you all for being here! To our pre-service teachers...come back and learn with us each week! The rest of you...keep coming back too, we like y'all. Thanks to @zeitz for guest moderating tonight! To my co-moderators- @townsleyaj and @danpbutler, thanks as always #IAedChat
This has been a motivating and informative event. Thank you for all of your ideas and please keep in touch with other ideas or if we can help in any way. #iaedchat
We will be back next week with a special edition of #IAedchat LIVE. Look for a podcast recap to be dropped in the next hour! Until the next time…Be the Change! Good night, everyone.
