CatholicEdChat is a twitter chat. Topics focus on discussions around educational issues for Catholic Educators and topics beneficial to Catholic Schools. We look forward to continuing to connect Catholic Educators online to discuss education and teaching with faith in our schools. The chat takes place on Saturday mornings. Time 9am EST.
Good Morning, #CatholicEdchat ! Dropping in to say hi! We are having our 2nd ever #edcampAOP today! After your chat feel free to follow throughout the day and join in on the discussion! #aoptech@EdcampAoP@NCEATALK
Good morning from the Central Coast of California. I'm up early and we have the Sacrament of Reconciliation for my second graders in a few hours. Please keep them in your prayers! #catholicedchat
We have LOTS to discuss today, so let’s get started!
Q1: Which Social Media accounts does your school use, and what is the intended audience and purpose of each? (Show off your school’s story now! #TimeToTagAndFollow) #CatholicEdChat
A1 Twitter is the mainstay. Some classes might use Blogger or Google Sites but they would likely be restricted to the Ss and Ts of that class. Twitter is likely to be used by the Admin of the school to promote the life & activities of the school.
#CatholicEdChat
At my college we use Twitter a lot. I'd like to use a closed social media in my classroom that just Ss and Ts can see so students engage w/o being afraid that the school assignment might hurt their social media presence. #CatholicEdChat#gccedu
A1: my school uses Facebook and Twitter, but primarily Facebook. Our main audience is families and sharing our school's story with potential families. #CatholicEdChat
@RSMSchools has Twitter, Facebook, and I believe, instagram. @kristinefull would know more than me. Some teachers also have personal/class accounts. #CatholicEdChat

A1: @toltoncatholic has Fbook (events, news, esp. aimed for parents/grtr community), Insta & Twitter seem more aimed to students. Twitter does some parent/grtr comm. too. The awesome @golfinguy003 runs it all for us! #CatholicEdChat

Q1: Which Social Media accounts does your school use, and what is the intended audience and purpose of each? (Show off your school’s story now! #TimeToTagAndFollow) #CatholicEdChat
Twitter and Facebook are the main profiles used by schools I work with - students, parents and families look to these social channels regularly #CatholicEdChat
A1: My ideal Catholic school:
Twitter for PD for Ts and for building PLN.
Facebook for marketing and evangelization to both current and potential families - #transparency
Instagram for Ss and current families.
Snapchat for current families w/school filter.
#CatholicEdChat
School is mostly on FB, this week a new webpage launched, plans for Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube are phase 2. I don’t get to use as much as i like because I’m playing instruments.#CatholicEdChat
A1. Twitter (real time updates, promotes activities), Facebook (geared to parents/alum, celebrates and promotes) and Instagram (uses pictures to share story of our school) #CatholicEdchat
Good morning! A1, most of the Ts at my school have a Twitter account. It’s a mix of how it’s used. Mostly to share classroom happenings. #CatholicEdChat
We use Facebook and Instagram as a way to try to reach out to parents and the larger community. We've just started using these as marketing tools, but I'm curious about how other schools use their accounts. #catholicedchat

A1: Twitter, FB, and Instagram. To share the Good News of course! @FAWcrusaders 🌍, FB community/Ps and potential Families, Insta -private for Fam #CatholicEdChat
A1: We use Twitter and Instagram accounts for school teams & activities. We have Facebook that focus mostly on parents and alumni and trying to work more with SnapChat for current & future Ss. #CatholicEdChat
I love Instagram for schools! I’ve done presentations on how to use Instagram for schools and parishes at the @C3TechConf in LA for the last few summers. #CatholicEdChat
A2 Schools will use Twitter to promote their life, often linking back to the Charism, promote their Founder’s Day and obviously Social Outreach.
#CatholicEdChat
A2: Using #SocialMedia in your Catholic School gives you the absolute perfect opportunity to share what your school VALUES, as it relates to Catholic Identity, which may include: VIRTUES and evangelization. #CatholicEdChat
Tech coach/librarian from Louisiana late this morning but our school tries to post same to FB, Twitter, and Instagram. Adults mainly on FB, Ss on Twitter & IG - I’m trying to get more Ts on Twitter #CatholicEdChat
Good morning from Airdrie Alberta where we are visiting friends during our winter break, back to teaching grade 3 in La Loche Saskatchewan on Monday #CatholicEdChat
I know it’s a bit pricey. :( You can have a filter for just one day. For a special event or weekend. #CatholicEdChat@MarliseAlbert bought one for graduation night. The Ss loved it! #CatholicEdChat
A1 - I forgot to mention more teachers joined Twitter this year and were stoked about what they’ve learned! Lots of innovation being shared which means better teaching and increased student engagement #CatholicEdChat
A2: our charism is shared through our stories of being a strong faith community. We've struggled to think of a hashtag for our school...still trying to put that together! #CatholicEdChat
A2: My school is not using SS media that much - yet. I personally use twitter to learn and to share my knowledge about including students with disabilities in Catholic Schools. #Catholicedchat
Q2: What our students and faculty are doing. Not carefully cultivated posed pictures. She will come in and snap a few photos. Ts also let her know of big events, like a wax museum, or prayer partners. #CatholicEdChat
Q2: Part of promoting the charism and mission is in the events and the instructional lessons tweeting. Our campus ministry also does a fantastic job of connecting back to St. Francis DeSales and Jane DeChantal. #CatholicEdChat
A2: Using #SocialMedia in your Catholic School gives you the absolute perfect opportunity to share what your school VALUES, as it relates to Catholic Identity, which may include: VIRTUES and evangelization. #CatholicEdChat
A2 The Religious Education & Evangelisation Team at Sydney Catholic Schools uses the Twitter Handle @CEO_RE to run 3x1 Hour Twitter Forums to deliver focused PD using #CEOPEARL See https://t.co/3DN6zrIk4e#CatholicEdChat
A2: We often post our charity and service projects in the different classrooms. I would love to be more intentional about listening our SLEs with photos. #catholicedchat
A2: Not just about constant posts, but intentional posts. When I posted video of our Ss mousetrap car yesterday it was about promoting our engineering program. #CatholicEdChat
A2 By being on SM, we are able to show our faith, values, diversity, and academic achievements by sharing our everyday activities with others. #catholicedchat
A2: we are actually embarking on a communications strategic plan thanks to the foresight of our rector and development director. I can’t wait to see the consistency in message that will surely come from it. #CatholicEdChat
A2: I like that Twitter requires that users get into the discipline of distilling the most important message they want to share. When we get too wordy, sometimes the central message gets buried. #CatholicEdChat
A2: Not just about constant posts, but intentional posts. When I posted video of our Ss mousetrap car yesterday it was about promoting our engineering program. #CatholicEdChat
Somebody will periodically stream parts of different school events, we also did the #ashtag and emphasize sharing activities going on in classroom. #CatholicEdChat
A2 Social media in Catholic schools can share the good news - the awesome news - of happenings in our classrooms and school community with the whole world! We can connect globally on shared mission with joy! #CatholicEdChat
A2: @V_Spadoni does a great job marketing his school and supporting Catholic Schools in general. And as @denisebrick said, he always has a picture! #Catholicedchat
Intentional posts are SO important. An admin can build them in advance and schedule them using a tool like Hootsuite. #CatholicEdChat#GameChanging for marketing and sharing the mission.

I shared this with my students yesterday, and they got a kick out of it. Don't unfriend or otherwise unfollow the Lord! And let's keep those numbers high! #CatholicEdChat
Not at this time, but that may change in the future! Or if your archdiocese runs a professional conference, you could suggest they invite me as a speaker. I also do talks on Pinterest and ed tech for ELA teachers. #CatholicEdChat

Hi, everyone at #CatholicEdChat Sorry I'm late--I'm at #mcss18 listening to keynote speaker Dr. Michael Davis talk about the American wartime effort during WWI. Keeping an eye on this great chat this AM!
We did a schoolwide Nutcracker and used it. Parents and grandparents all over the world watched. It was awesome. Using it again for our Easter school wide lunch. #CatholicEdChat
A2: We use #WeAreMarian & #CelebrateMarian. Key is to search #'s before you use them, and use them enough that you 'own' them. Spartans #'s were used so much we couldn't go there. #CatholicEdChat
A3: no hashtag...yet! Still trying to feel out how many followers/families/teachers would actively use twitter and use the hashtag. We have a stronger presence on Facebook. #CatholicEdChat
We do it frequently, and its very popular. Not so much during class, but parts of Mass and sports events, especially, we see good number of viewers. #CatholicEdChat

Kevin, I just read this awesome book about identifying the charisma of your school. If I would get to add a chapter, I’d say use your school’s charisms to pen the new school hashtag. #CatholicEdChat
@HTCS_Saints Great conversation this morning! This Catholic Ed parent is reflecting on how our school would answer each of these questions. #CatholicEdChat#HTSaints
A3: We are St. Raphael Academy, but are nickname is @SaintRays. RI is so small that everyone pretty much knows which you mean when you say “I work at Saints” or “I’m at Saint Rays.” #Catholicedchat
A3.2: @StPatSch has the school hashtag #StPatProud, which was a unifying force in changing the school climate to be a very positive one. #StPatProud was used in branding the school in the virtue of unity. And the hashtag was dreamt up due to the need for #unity. #CatholicEdChat
I believe it is close to 21. M across accounts in many kbguages - when @Pontifex visited the U.S. in 2015 it was a joy to follow and share via @WMOFNancy#CatholicEdChat

I loved how Facebook Live was used for reading a Snowy Day picture book during a Snow Day by a principal in a Maryland school. #CatholicEdChat#KidsDeserveIt
I experimented with TweetDeck to schedule all my #ScienceAndFaith tweets during #CSW18. It was handy to create messages all at once and spread out when they get posted. #CatholicEdChat

A3: We use #WeAreVizLs and #WeAreVizMontessori. Our school is three within one - LS, MS, US. There can be feeling that our little ones get lost and we wanted to give them a presence. #CatholicEdChat
#catholicEdChat Just getting started with Twitter for Ts PD. It was named the top app for PD @ #FETC 60 apps in 60 minutes presentation. My local Ts follow me and I push Twitter Trending Topics to them.
A3 Schools would determine that from context. #CEOPEARL is the Program for Emerging and Aspiring Religious Leaders, which is a Development program that I run for future schoo, leaders (Religious Education Coordinators).
#CatholicEdChat
I use @hootsuite to share via social media and manage multiple accounts for a school - feel free to reach out to me if you or your school has questions on how to use it #CatholicEdChat
Our release (opt out) has statement to effect of "we will make every reasonable effort but will have publicity, promotional, & video coverage of large groups that may include images" - w a contact to our communication director & social worker for sensitive issues #catholicedchat
I couldn’t get through a chat without using Tweetdeck. It’s my FAVORITE tool for chats. Can’t tell you the last time I use https://t.co/pvXD1NKZaY on my laptop. #CatholicEdChat

A3 Athletics uses #goramblers. I use #LALearns for edtech. Most of our teams also have accts on Twitter to post scores, etc. Some clubs & organizations r quite active on Instagram. #CatholicEdChat
I experimented with TweetDeck to schedule all my #ScienceAndFaith tweets during #CSW18. It was handy to create messages all at once and spread out when they get posted. #CatholicEdChat
I'd suggest that when teams want to use a # they do a better job searching it. I just searched #TheMovement and didn't find your team anywhere. #TheTCMovement has NO tweets - easier to notice & to follow. #CatholicEdChat
A shared Google Doc can list all kids without permission. Whoever posts pics needs to check the list before posting. When you can’t tell who the kid is from far away, no permission is needed. There’s edit tools in Twitter for pics easy to use in the Twitter app. #CatholicEdChat
A2: @V_Spadoni does a great job marketing his school and supporting Catholic Schools in general. And as @denisebrick said, he always has a picture! #Catholicedchat
One of our teachers said joining @Twitter was the best thing she’s done so far this year! She’s learned so much - it’s expanded/challenged her thinking on EVERYTHING from homework to grading to in class work #CatholicEdChat
Cool idea! Could also be used for a “back to school” message, maybe like a night before first day book. This idea has my wheels spinning. #CatholicEdChat
I loved how Facebook Live was used for reading a Snowy Day picture book during a Snow Day by a principal in a Maryland school. #CatholicEdChat#KidsDeserveIt
Here is the school that did the FB live reading of The Snowy Day. Brilliant! Also he had a contest for photos of students reading during the snow day. https://t.co/YIwlbnNTRk#CatholicEdchat
I haven’t really been able to follow #CatholicEdChat this morning... but thanks to it I was able to meet in-person a TON of great people while at FETC18!

In my dream 🌎, each classroom teacher would have a #blog (run by students!) and then a school #blog where the best of the best is being shared! #CatholicEdChat
Q4: @mrs_bcopeland uses Twitter for a scavenger hunt at the beginning of the year. Some others have accounts, but not all students habe Twitter so I find it difficult to utilize for class activities like I'd want to. #CatholicEdchat
A4: other teachers are slowly getting into Twitter/Facebook. They use it to follow the school accounts and get ideas, but not really for pd. #Catholicedchat
A4: I'm stepping outside the question a little. If you want to see an amazing job of utilizing SM by a school - check out @Joe_Sanfelippo and #gocrickets#CatholicEdChat
A4: I tag our school when I post something. The FB and Twitter accounts used to be connected. This year, I haven’t posted a lot, instead I’ve been putting pictures on the TVs around the schools so people can see what we’re doing. #CatholicEdchat
It’s subscription based, has a free version, for 1 user with 3 social profiles. Allows you to put multiple SM accounts and schedule to post in advance. Very helpful for an admin or marketer. #CatholicEdChathttps://t.co/hwI0T3CLtY
A4. Our teachers use social media for professional development, to share ideas and look for ways to do things better, to celebrate student learning and generally promote school by sharing the school’s posts. #CatholicEdChat

A4: Is anyone finding an age range or grade level where younger parents start to be more active on Twitter or Instagram than on Facebook? #CatholicEdChat
A5: In my ideal Catholic school, the Ss help tell the school’s story on Social Media. One awesome idea is to give Ss control of the school’s account for a day, maybe an auction item or raffle prize. #KidsDeserveIt#CatholicEdChat
A4 In Australia Ts can use Twitter (for example) to meet Proficient Teacher Standards:
6.2
Engage in professional learning and improve practice
6.3
Engage with colleagues and improve practice
7.4
Engage with professional teaching networks and broader communities
#CatholicEdChat
A4: #Catholicedchat. I’m the only teacher at my school who is a regular twitter user for professional reasons. Learned from @AbGreer! I have learned so much from following great Catholic School leaders around the world. I love to share what I know about Inclusion.
My favorite account in our school is our Women's Basketball account. Completely run by 2 of our players/managers @MCHSWBasketball They rock at it. #WeAreMarian#CatholicEdChat
A5 We use our classroom Twitter account to do activities like connecting with authors, following @NASA, participating in global projects, and ordering virtual cupcakes from @BarbInNebraska's class! #CatholicEdChat
And I love being a part of #CatholicEdChat on Sat mornings from 8-9 Central. Please share this awesome PD opportunity with other Catholic educators! 😊 @mliaCCE@MJBoyle3
#CatholicedChat Just checking in for a couple minutes I have a meeting going on this AM and will read through tweets. We use Social Media to share schoolwork, projects, fundraising events. We use FB and have one person in charge of posting. We all send info to her 1st.
I have to leave early, to pick up my son from CCD. Have a great rest of your weekend, #CatholicEdChat, and keep spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ throughout our Catholic schools via social media! Thank you, @denisebrick, for leading us this morning. May God bless you all.
If it wasn’t for Twitter I wouldn’t have met you! Looking to connect with others to grow my Aussie PLN and possibly get a chance to present there. #CatholicEdChat
When I find great resources on Twitter, I email them to our Ts. I don't just send the resource link, I send a link to the Tweet so they are constantly reminded where I'm finding all these great resources. #CatholicEdChat
A5: we don't have that many opportunities for Ss, but Ss know I'm active and they want me to share stories. It's important that Ts model acceptable usage! #CatholicEdChat
And I love being a part of #CatholicEdChat on Sat mornings from 8-9 Central. Please share this awesome PD opportunity with other Catholic educators! 😊 @mliaCCE@MJBoyle3
A5: We don't have a lot of student involvement in our class and school accounts. Our 1st grade teacher does let the Ss compose a daily tweet about the events of the day. #CatholicEdChat
A5:#Catholicedchat. Very few opportunities. I teach Theology and do tweet out responses students offer via my own account. (Vatican survey of young people was an example.) We are a 1:1 school but I can’t get on twitter during the day - it is blocked for students & teachers.
A5 They can use the Twitter hashtags to follow sports and performing arts events. I’ve been letting Ss use Snapchat to show what is going on in our classroom. I always moderate. #catholicedchat
Something to watch out for and be sensitive to so that we stay relevant and connected to younger parents. Might be a great idea to survey new PreK or KDG parents each year about what SM they use, so school can adapt to any trends. #CatholicEdChat
As both an author and an educator, I’ve loved connecting with schools on social media, too! Doing my first Skype visit with a school in about 9 days! 😃 #CatholicEdChat
A5 We use our classroom Twitter account to do activities like connecting with authors, following @NASA, participating in global projects, and ordering virtual cupcakes from @BarbInNebraska's class! #CatholicEdChat
#CatholicEdChat I use Twitter and post things happening in my STREAM Lab to my PLN some other teachers use FB anything on the Official School FB page goes through one person so that there are no duplicate posts and variety in posts.
A6 When a parent was giving a tour to a new family, she was able to tell them what we do in 3rd grade just from following my twitter account. She had a window into our room! #CatholicEdchat
A6 The ability to network with other Edu professionals& the ability to meet T Standards
6.2
Engage in professional learning and improve practice
6.3
Engage with colleagues and improve practice
7.4
Engage with professional teaching networks and broader communities
#CatholicEdChat
Hi all. Sorry i missed the chat. Waking up later here in CA. @the_Madeleine loves using Twitter. Many Ts share Instructional content. Feed on our homepage. Latest #geniushour project with 4th grade #CatholicEdChat
I let my kids use it. I am not proficient. I am thinking of having my kids teach me as part of the Social Media unit. My kids are not happy with the new version.#CatholicedChat
I know! It’s a little crazy that you can study at the same Uni that my Brother & Father studied at & we end up connecting on Twitter! Talk about 6 Degrees of Separation #CatholicEdChat
I had an account and deleted it because I wasn’t proficient and I was getting bombarded with pictures of younger nieces and nephews with weird animations. I need to revisit because students love it. #IAmOld#CatholicEdChat
I'm thinking about using something like this as we discuss the Civil Rights Movement in my Modern US History class. Looking at current movements for social justice and rights. #CatholicEdChat
We love to add the fun and a bit of competition to any conference. Just breaks up the day and allows you to meet people in a fun way! #WhoDoesn’tLikeBingo. #CatholicEdChat

A7: The most awesome thing was that the parents and Ss started using the school hashtag too! At Open House, many Ss wanted their pictures taken with the giant hashtag in the office! #StPatProud#CatholicEdChat
Use it for Field Trips. As students learn new things, have them stop and record a brief reflection. Download the snaps to their camera roll and submit as video to LMS or Google Classroom. They can use the Clips app on iOS as an alternative to SnapChat. #CatholicEdChat

Oh Mary Jane, You must follow #BookSnaps. It’s such a fun way to share a book and the students will love to build them! @TaraMartinEDU is a must follow too! #CatholicEdChat

EXACTLY!! In marketing material an admin should be able to tell prospective families to search the school hashtag to get a picture of the culture of a school and a peek into classrooms. This is solid gold marketing! #CatholicEdChat
A6 When a parent was giving a tour to a new family, she was able to tell them what we do in 3rd grade just from following my twitter account. She had a window into our room! #CatholicEdchat
I am wondering the same! My Ss love YouTube too. They are creating channels and posting without parent oversight. Eeeek as a T and P this concerns me! #CatholicEdChat
Didn't want to interrupt a really great topic, but @iste & @TeachersGuild have teamed up to help design the next generation of effective #digcit skills & lessons.
#CatholicEdChat, we need your voices and ideas! Tweet me for more info...I'm an ambassador :) [end shameless plug]
Think digital citizenship should be more than tool tips & scare tactics?
@iste & @TeachersGuild have teamed up to create a place for us to share, develop! (just like we tell the kids).
Let's build a new #digcit curriculum together! https://t.co/205Ct4idKL
