#HipHopEd Chat is a weekly cyber cypher (chat) where stakeholders within Hip-Hop and Education come together to discuss issues that impact the youth and adults within our local, national and global communities. #HipHopEd Chat is a virtual form of professional development for Educators, workshop for Parents and other Adults and a brainstorming session of Hip-Hop practitioners. Our #HipHopEd chats are every Tuesday from 9-10 EST. on Twitter.
Too many, Hip-Hop music and culture would be viewed as a tool for the promotion of substance abuse but as #HipHopEd we always dig deeper to see the content beyond the commercial
We are honored and excited to have @DrHicksHarper who is a regular within our #HipHopEd chats, but she has been using HH as a prevention strategies for 20+ years #HipHopDev
Students got so comfortable in the our school studio that they tried to sneak some in lean inside a sprite bottle. I caught it instantly, and was able to facilitate a powerful group dialogue. We need to create spaces where harmful coping mechanisms can manifest #hiphoped
A Hip-Hop based prevention strategy is when Artists are brave enough to reveal their struggles with substances in a sincere manner through their music #HipHopEd
Hip hop is such a powerful tool for our kids to discuss the issues of their lives. We have so much powerful literature to pull from that relates to our kids’ experiences. #HipHopEd
Many people simply bobbed their head to the Geto Boys "My Mind Playing Tricks on Me" when this was a substance abuse prevention song that had huge commercial appeal #hiphoped
Yes and some artists are starting to do just that. @Timbaland speaks about his battle with opioids and wants to let youth know of the dangers #hiphoped#hiphopdev

I bet anything that when confronted, many of your kids probably admitted that the lean came more from pressure than passion. This is a narrative that we must confront, and we have many examples from hip hop to pull from. #HipHopEd
J. Cole's latest album is FULL of vulnerable, raw content to dig into about substance abuse prevention and what it means to cope with trauma in a healthy way. #HipHopEd
Hip-Hop as a prevention strategy requires providing the space for students to create content that tells their own story and critique the narratives within the music and culture #hiphoped

If you talk #hiphop with your students, you can talk about substance abuse. And if you can open those doors, they’ll listen to you about addiction and prevention. #HipHopEd#NationalPreventionWeek
Mental health is such an important thing. This is a topic that is too long for the format of Twitter, but so many conversations can be had around how we can use hip hop to reinforce mental health with our youth #HipHopEd
Some artists that have opened up about their struggle with substance abuse: Eminem, Royce, Meek, Chance, J Cole, Gucci, Mozzy, Schoolboy Q, Joey Badass #HipHopEd
Many people simply bobbed their head to the Geto Boys "My Mind Playing Tricks on Me" when this was a substance abuse prevention song that had huge commercial appeal #hiphoped
We have to remember that behavior change is a process that involves lapses and relapses, and support youth through that. We cannot expect complete abstinence immediately - which is often how schools treat substance abuse issues. #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd check out @Royceda59 “Book of Ryan” which is described as a musical approach to his therapy as he became and remains sober and drug free #Salute
Many times that's because too many in the system do not understanding their students - including the role that hip-hop plays in their lives! #hiphoped#hiphopdev
True story! My classes took me on a four day journey on ATM alone. That music video fed classes full of lessons on budgeting, taking care of our youth, an so much more. #HipHopEd
Part of the influx of abuse is related to social media. The "smoke and mirrors" of instagram leaves many youth thinking only about that "smoke" without looking beyond the "mirror" #HipHopEd
I'd like to hear some of my fellow #HipHopEd educators take on how to handle conversations with students around substance use when students ask personal questions?
In order to share what he has learned about substance abuse/prevention, @JColeNC first had to feel comfortable enough to share his struggles with us. We must make sure we are actively creating an environment in our classrooms where students feel safe enough to do the same.

We have understand that Hip-Hop’s creation can be viewed through the lens of prevention and therapy so seeing it as a tool for substance abuse prevention shouldn’t be a stretch #HipHopEd
Jay-Z has multiple songs about addiction. "Hollywood", "addicted to the game", "D'Evils" to name a few. Not just drugs but fame, power, money.. #HipHopEd
Royce Da 5’9” comes to mind here. Very frank (and brave) about how dealing with alcoholism. I love how on his song “Outside”, he expresses his fear that his son will take up drinking too. It’s not preachy, just honest and real. #HipHopEd

I’ve used Lamar’s Swimming Pools and Kanye’s Drunk and Hot Girls to discuss substance abuse and rape culture. Have to use these to point out toxic thinking. #HipHopEd

"Dear Momma" is an essential part of a Hip Hop prevention strategy as it enables students to leverage their feelings for their mom, no matter the relationship they have with her #hiphoped@tdj6899
Important to explore w/ Ss the racial over/undertones re: how “abuse” is framed in public square & “Justice” system. Know the history of drugs, laws & their intent(s) #hiphoped

Honesty over everything. Students need adults who can speak truth into their lives on this topic. Especially if those adults personally understand the struggle. #HipHopEd

Truth, but also, not to get meta on this, but many of our youth have no idea what the “mirror” is. “Normal” is normal, and we as teachers must disrupt our youth by challenging them in responsible manners. #HipHopEd
Many people simply bobbed their head to the Geto Boys "My Mind Playing Tricks on Me" when this was a substance abuse prevention song that had huge commercial appeal #hiphoped
Jay-Z has a song talking about how the dealer turns into the feign, always on a chase. We see that too much in our communities - the loop is cyclical. Up to educators immersed in HH to break it #HipHopEd
It depends because some use it to expose their weaknesses while some use it for popular gain. You have rappers that are following the so called trend talking about percocets and Molly, thinking that's what it means to be black and trying to fit in to the "Culture". #HipHopEd

It takes at minimum 6 months of using of a new behavior (coping machism) for it to become integrated into your daily repertoire. If you catch a substance abuse issue mid school year, you literally don’t have enough time that year #StagesOfChange#HipHopEd
You can also look at how Hip-Hop never embraced the use of crack where as it embraced other substances (i.e. liquor and pills). Ask students their thoughts about this on a micro and macro level #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd Thank you for the courage to teach #ThisisAmerica yesterday. Most engaged my urban high-poverty kids have been most of the year. We watched video several times, noticing and thinking, finally writing a response. Thanks @JonBalcerak. Saw your post and said, I'll try it!

This is very similar to a conversation I had with several of my classes on misogyny and objectification of women in hip hop, and wider American culture. It’s a very troubling concept that Byron Hurt admirably tried to address a decade ago. #HipHopEd
Normalize them. Lapses WILL happen, the goal is to prevent them from becoming full relapses. Creating support systems to bolster self-efficacy upon a lapse. A school studio for students to record a verse after each lapse is ideal. #HipHopEd
Stream André 3000's Mother's Day Songs "Me&My" | HipHopDX @tdj6899 | Another artistic expression about relationship w/ mom and remembering the special things they do together. Memories are therapy #HipHopEdhttps://t.co/xZmDZ10Qe4
There’s a history of anti drug raps like King Heroin or White Lines for example. But prevention lies in an epistemic/ontological shift which as @Ianplevy notes requires time & is complex. #hiphoped
Hip hop 2 prevent curriculum trainer here...changes lives DC wards - the culture matters n the students always relate! #hiphoped#hiphopdevhttps://t.co/DNgFmdLsgQ check it!
I used the Planet Rock Doc in my social studies class this year and had my students identify cause and effect from Civil Rights to gangsta rap. The conversation was so powerful #HipHopEd
Rothchilds, Israel, UK and America does this because there is no Central Banking System in Iran...one of the last countries not trapped in the Rich White Man Money Debt Slave Power System. #HipHopNews#HipHopEd#hiphop
Royce wrote his own narrative on his battle with substances here https://t.co/Rj4bqCjQwc This can encourage students to tell their own stories and how they coped. #HipHopEd
@JoeBudden first album has some deep poetic material to address some of the life circumstances that may lead youth to engage with substances 'Come and Take a Walk with Me" #HipHopEd
I find Lil’ Durk’s “Crossroads” interesting in this respect, as he references how life gets “real” quickly when the people who pass are yours. Had a great great conversation with one of my classes on that song recently #HipHopEd
Hip-Hop was made to b used for prevention intervention. The formal features oh the culture make it perfect. My Youth cypher prepping #hiphoped#hiphopdev

Also it's important that our black boys know that there's really no margin for error. Substance abuse is probably the number one link to mass incarceration. #HipHopEd
We must work with our youth using holistic strategies for prevention. Mind, body and spirit collectively is the only way hip-hop can work positive health outcomes #hiphoped#hiphopdev
That my friend is layered. As a counselor I’d keep it confidential if possible. For instance if I caught a student with weed. Only because I knew admin and school safety would bug #HipHopEd

Is social media consumption part of the prevention discussion? Are schools teaching students how to navigate social media responsibly? “Likes” are an addiction of their own and the pursuit of internet “fame” can have dire consequences. #HipHopEd
A true shift in substance use and abuse among youth will require the adult educators to reflect on their practices (i.e. Happy Hour, Holiday Patties, etc.) #HipHopEd Check your social norms

This is huge! And from my perspective, school are not even doing close to enough. In fact, there only response is to "ban" social media use - that doesn't solve the problem #HipHopEd

Hip-Hop = THE youth popular culture = let’s meet them where they are while staying ahead of the culture too! Great to see everyone tweeting tonight in the name of education n culture! #hiphopdev#HipHopEd@DrHicksHarper
Yes!!!! You exhibit my struggle every day as a teacher. If, despite their struggle, my students come to get their education every day, there are some things that take a back seat (I.e. worrying about my kids smoking) Maybe just me? So much to unpack here for Twitter... #HipHopEd
Agreed!! I feel like a far better approach would be to teach social media literacy/responsible behaviours (and do it early!). We live in a digital world and we should arm students with tools to navigate online spaces in healthy ways. #HipHopEd

Currently what I am working on...
Also difficult with administrators & policy makers who don't know the first thing about instagram, snapchat, etc. #HipHopEd
I think part of the problem is the adults don't understand or know how to use social media. And many adults need their own professional development on using social media responsibly #HipHopEd
There has to be a level of amnesty around drug use for our youth in schools the way they will have programs to get guns off the streets. You can’t treat a health issue like a crime; you see happened when they did this in the 80s and 90s #HipHopEd
No, to the contrary. It exacerbates it. If we attempt to thwart our youth, they ALWAYS find a way around us. Better to embrace their ingenuity and integrate social media into our teaching practices. #HipHoped

Social Media is no longer a choice for an Educator to know. It is like teaching students who speak a language that you don't understand and you wonder why you don't understand them #HipHopEd
How are school counselors supposed to support students struggling with substance abuse when the national average for SC to student ratio is 480 to 1? #hiphoped
Social media must be a part of the prevention discussion. Youth are consumed by it so how do we maximize the benefits is the question.#hiphoped#hiphopdev

One thing Adults must learn how to do is “listen” to hear what the youth hear and don’t hear so that you can engage from where your youth actually are and not where you think they are #HipHopEd
Exactly. The narratives overlap. With social media - banning an app is NO solution. We must work to integrate and teach to and with the tool of social media #HipHopEd
Before you begin to scapegoat Hip-Hop music driving youth to engage in drugs, take a walk and spend some time in their neighborhoods, homes and minds #HipHopEd#ThisCantBeLife
"And Lord knows I tried, been a witness to homicide
Seen drive-by's takin' lives, little kids die
Wonder why as I walk by
Broken-hearted as I glance at the chalk line, gettin' high" #HipHopEd
Man - I can't stand that! Like they are above thou because they DONT know the most influential cultural trend, in terms of communication, in the last decade plus. Doesn't make sense #HipHopEd
No it’s never a crime. I come back to Childish Gambino’s moment of silence when he lights up. Sometimes, in a chaotic world, that is the only calm our kids know. We. Cannot. Judge. Reality. #HipHopEd
