#ALedchat Archive
#ALedchat is a weekly chat on Twitter about education topics. It is held each Monday from 9-10pmCST. While the discussion on #ALedchat continues on Twitter well beyond our weekly one-hour chat session, this platform affords us the opportunity to extend, expand and share the conversation with an even greater audience. Educators from across the state of Alabama, and the world, can come here to find encouragement, support, resources, professional growth opportunities and advice, while providing the same to their colleagues.

Hi
Carl from Avonsleigh Australia
At home with teh flu
Maths Science High School teacher
Q1: What are some things to consider when arranging the classroom?
What an awesome thing to get to do! https://t.co/qyprbdtm3L
Kristen, HS library media specialist in Illinois. Redesigning a 40 year old library to make it !
Glad you are here Coach! You will have great insight since you have a great classroom!
No words have been truer.
Thanks for sure! Taking Ed Stats and Technology and Education right now.
I'm Jennifer Hogan, Hoover High AP, co-founder of this chat and . Fired up to learn from you tonight!
oh I am having a blast and so are my students!
Thanks Jennifer.
Just chilling out on teh couch watching the alpacas out the window. Tough being sick
A1. Just today another principal was asking me about switching a classroom from desks to tables. We did that a year ago.
A1: Can the teacher move around the room?
A1: It's about and for the students, not the teacher!
A1: I think you should always consider how your classroom arrangement facilitates learning and discussion. Eliminate the back :)
Hope you don't get mad at me I spiced mine up with some Bama stuff this year
A1: What is the best possible set up for students to succeed and feel safe every single day?
a1 being in discipline, I think it depends on the strength/weakness of classroom mngmt for t https://t.co/NmXIEk7Kci
Q1: What are some things to consider when arranging the classroom?
For the record
When does school go back?
(I'm in winter here remember)
Well.... Auburn would have been more classy- but I will :)
A1 How can I create a classroom environment that fosters learning and collaboration? How can I remove barriers for my students?
A1 How it "feels" when you walk in. The colors, arrangement of furniture, decor, etc should be kid friendly.
We start with kiddos August 10th.
and when it's not 100 degrees. :(
A1: When arranging CR, think of ease of movement, access to resources, everyone visible, visibility of projector, etc.
A1: Will the kids be comfortable? Will they feel safe? Cannot learn if they cannot move past these stages. https://t.co/DZHu9YgKfP
Q1: What are some things to consider when arranging the classroom?
A1: what type of learning activities you wish to facilitate and how your arrangement will support those activities
A1: Safety, collaboration, small group opportunities, and an environment that is student centered. https://t.co/pFsmimlPbb
Q1: What are some things to consider when arranging the classroom?
A1) A respectful relationship with an adult so that they feel safe... without safe nothing else happens
Hi! I'm Kiana Coleman, Elementary School Principal.
are you familiar with socratic seminars?
Visibility to projector is a huge one! It's the kiddo's biggest pet peeve in my classroom!
Visibility for all is crucial to learning.
Yes..somewhat. Would like to continue learning more about this though.
Kids want to feel that the environment is inviting! https://t.co/tyLB2QpqD4
A1 How it "feels" when you walk in. The colors, arrangement of furniture, decor, etc should be kid friendly.
Welcome Kiana. Glad you could join us tonight.
What's the verdict? Tables or desks?
A1: Collaboration and class size. My kids are ALWAYS moving and they and the robots need maximum amount of space possible.
A1: spacing and how to maximize the Ss interaction.
Absolutely! RT A1: Can the teacher move around the room?
A1: ADA and fire code requirements are important to keep in mind and something teachers forget about or overlook
A1 - Start with the "Why?" of the classroom; then let the Ss arrange it. Reduce teacher real estate.
Our kids start August 11.
A1: we seem to always be moving, group work or collaborating in some form or fashion
My kiddos start August 3rd. Teachers back Wednesday.
A1: Is the room set up to meet the needs of a variety of learning styles.
Love this answer! RT A1 - Start with the "Why?" of the classroom; then let the Ss arrange it. Reduce teacher real estate.
How the teacher can best manage the classroom is important!
A1 I had a chance to go to training last week w/ & I realized that space is a must for movement
Well you still have a bit of time to relax
Almost all of rooms now have tables. Ts wrote mini grants to get them. Spaces for collaborative learning https://t.co/0OZEiJRIZX
What's the verdict? Tables or desks?
A1 I believe you must consider options for Ss, and providing mulitple seating choices. This will provide comfort from the start
So soon compared to the other replies
A1: how students will engage with each other.
I want it to feel that way when I go into a CR! If I can't stand it, the kids probably can't either!
What type of grants? Please share with the group.
A1: reduce clutter so Ss can easily find what they need. Store your extras behind closed doors if possible
Yes, please! RT : What type of grants? Please share with the group.
Depends on how the T will utilize them...RT What's the verdict? Tables or desks?
Yes! Will they work independently, collaboratively, etc. Arrangement can change daily. https://t.co/ez9KHUs97g
A1: how students will engage with each other.
Yes! We are academic hoarders in schools. There are many things we can eliminate to increase space.
been working hard on that end of school/this summer
They were District grants. The community donates $$ and teachers have a window of time to request funds. https://t.co/0JPMaIhfIR
What type of grants? Please share with the group.
*******Q2 coming up in 1 minute*******
Were those local or national grants?
I agree... The ability to collaborate is necessary https://t.co/Qwi13wk4aA
A1: we seem to always be moving, group work or collaborating in some form or fashion
A1: I just asked my 15 year old and he said teachers need good posters on the wall ... or something not boring! 😊
Pam here late from Arkansas
Did you meet while you were there? https://t.co/oAFk2RugqY
A1 I had a chance to go to training last week w/ & I realized that space is a must for movement
Emile Aiton, SPE teacher @ Haleyville HS
Welcome Pam! Jump right in!
A1.2 Recently spent an afternoon cleaning clutter out of my new classroom. Way too much "stuff"...not enough space for growth.
A1: need to consider safety issues.
Q2: How involved are your students in the planning and design of your classroom?
RT! RT! RT! Out of the mouths of babes..... https://t.co/UtMuvGsUKJ
A1: I just asked my 15 year old and he said teachers need good posters on the wall ... or something not boring! 😊
I know people are serious about hand washing when I see soap & towels. What does ur room arrangement show https://t.co/VBOdPUPE39
A1: I think you should always consider how your classroom arrangement facilitates learning and discussion. Eliminate the back :)
Welcome Emile! Glad you are back with us tonight!
I weeded 9,000 books from our library this year to highlight the gems in the collection & make room for Ss
A1: Consider ALL students when preparing and questioning.
I am probably a little OCD, bothers me if classroom looks a mess but if learning is happening who cares.
We did this my last year at Hoover. Created more student learning spaces. It was awesome!
For my district, we celebrate the return of students on Aug 10 where are you from? https://t.co/HpCmtvRHN2
For the record
When does school go back?
(I'm in winter here remember)
Classroom has to feel inviting. Hide out blocks of "dead walls", have options in the room.
agreed! And they shouldn't be the same ones the teacher put up in his first year on the job, either!
I love how he says "space for growth." Thought of u & all of the work u have done in ur room! https://t.co/D1BN7P3QVR
A1.2 Recently spent an afternoon cleaning clutter out of my new classroom. Way too much "stuff"...not enough space for growth.
Word https://t.co/Fqulooxrmi
agreed! And they shouldn't be the same ones the teacher put up in his first year on the job, either!
Yes! Some look like ancient treasure maps with shredded corners :)
A2: I have "spaces" set up around room for students to work. They are welcome to move the chairs and TV trays around when working!
A2 Well you can teach area, perimeter, scale, ratio & proportion by letting Ss design the classroom
A1. Also principal's office. Toss the desk/get circular table/large monitor = learning/team https://t.co/g3PU9uHu4Q
I'm teach in suburban Melbourne, Australia
Winter here so we are in Term 3.
2 week holiday coming up in September.
A2 I allow Ss to have a voice in what the room looks like. If Ss have a different idea for arranging the room I'm open to it!
A2: because I have so many centers, and teach so many different things, my room changes constantly. I do listen to their feedback.
would be so proud https://t.co/ViCh7kwRpw
A1 - Start with the "Why?" of the classroom; then let the Ss arrange it. Reduce teacher real estate.
A2: In the elementary world, room arrangements sometimes change on a daily basis based on students, instruction, etc.
A2: We need to create an environment that is best for Ss & their learning! Ask them what they want!
A speaker once told me that you shouldnt have a lot going on in a room due to distraction. I disagree https://t.co/r4sWklm5he
A1: I just asked my 15 year old and he said teachers need good posters on the wall ... or something not boring! 😊
A2 Push back the furniture; cover the walls w/ paper; day 1 let kids brainstorm what they need and arrange the furniture/decorate
A2: Ss OWNED a huge part of our library redesign - measuring & drawing up suggestions in CAD; pitching for funds to PTA;
A2: My room is similar! The kids can move the "good chairs" and yoga balls as needed https://t.co/bM8Ohslm4n
A2: I have "spaces" set up around room for students to work. They are welcome to move the chairs and TV trays around when working!
A2: This is something we could do more of at the HS level. We get stuck in a rut- literally.
I think it can get to a point where it's too much. I think there needs to be some whitespace.
A2: would be an excellent design thinking challenge
A1:Eliminate the clutter! Every item has a "home" and should be kept in said "home"-Binders are a Ts BFF! https://t.co/QbotH7T1mY
Q1: What are some things to consider when arranging the classroom?
I did not but met a host of folks that I tried to turn in to Twitter. https://t.co/Zpy54HrzVa
Did you meet while you were there? https://t.co/oAFk2RugqY
A1 I had a chance to go to training last week w/ & I realized that space is a must for movement
I aboslutely love this. Genius. Stealing it for this year :) RT : pitching for funds to PTA;
A2: mine tell me what posters they like and they always like to see their work displayed.
Love this idea, We have thought about doing a PBL around room design.
A2. Co create should be one of the most common words in your classrooms. Partners in everything. https://t.co/CQlcOPJqPY
Q2: How involved are your students in the planning and design of your classroom?
Couldn't agree more. RT : A2: This is something we could do more of at the HS level. We get stuck in a rut
A2: I love how some of our teachers have let the students design a ceiling tile in their classroom. Gonna try it!
some classes decorate the ceiling tiles to spice up the classrooms.
Displaying the work is such a motivator for them! RT : they always like to see their work displayed.
I seemed to have missed Q2 could someone RT?
A2: It's my hunch that students don't often have input in room design ... but it could be be a small way to give some .
Always have dreamed of visiting https://t.co/6jvOb0Nyva
I'm teach in suburban Melbourne, Australia
Winter here so we are in Term 3.
2 week holiday coming up in September.
Yes! and hall tiles too! I think we are more stuck in rows.
A2: Student centered is what it is all about. If you walk in a room and just see the T's interests at heart, there is a problem.
https://t.co/BZ182xKZFa
A2: Ss OWNED a huge part of our library redesign - measuring & drawing up suggestions in CAD; pitching for funds to PTA;
A1: Kim here. Distracted by DNC. Classroom arrangement should encourage collaboration & accommodate movement.
We need Chad Cooley to post a pic of his cool room with rolling desks from Hoover High! Along with a host of action figures.
This teaches much needed organization to students.
*******Q3 coming up in 1 minute*******
I would die for those desks... RT : We need Chad Cooley to post a pic of his cool room with rolling desks
A2: I believe the real purpose in flexible seating is to help students realize how and where they learn best. Need their input.
If white is best, we are in some trouble! :0
So... which should we go with... what's best for Ss or what Ts like?
Q3: Where do you get ideas on classroom design?
Purpose is a good word for deciding on wall posters too!
Yes! Organization is a skill, and it can be learned. We must model!
Hope my smile came through on my last tweet!! :-)
my students get to choose their seats based on where they think they will learn best!
A3: Pinterest, and based on what's failed in the past.
A2: Very. We go 1:1 this year w/laptops, so I feel this is an opportunity to capitalize on. The arrangement can foster learning.
A3: I get ideas from others! We have to get out and see what others are doing. I notice design when teachers post CR pics too.
A3: Always love seeing other classrooms. Steal, steal, steal. Pinterest is also a great resource on CR design.
A3: Everywhere! Other teachers, Pinterest, Instagram, TPT, Google image searches, past ideas redone better https://t.co/S0Y8UdqfhT
Q3: Where do you get ideas on classroom design?
Uh ... the 15 year old sitting on my couch. https://t.co/EOQrmp5SJ5
Q3: Where do you get ideas on classroom design?
My Ss do the same!... It puts them in charge of their learning! https://t.co/bhBaO9Ercc
my students get to choose their seats based on where they think they will learn best!
A3b: I have a running list of things to try/redo for the next year all year long. Add ideas I come across throughout the year!
A3: My other half (at work- ha!) and I chat about it and think through it a lot! Always want what's best for students.
A3 Pinterest, Twitter PLN, experts like AJ Juliani and others. Also like to look at my colleagues and what they're doing.
A3: I have a first of the year plan (from what I learned from previous years), but then I listen to my Ss. We change often.
A3: Pinterest is a treasure trove of ideas! Just do a search for classroom design.
A3: I always enjoy visiting other schools and classrooms taking pictures and ideas..borrow and steal..
A3 Pinterest and visiting other schools!
Glad you are here friend. Give us some input tonight!
A3: does a lot with classroom design.
A2: I consider Ss needs (SPE) every yr; I had a S paint words on my wall-Ss love when they've contributed. https://t.co/GsSh5kalZr
Q2: How involved are your students in the planning and design of your classroom?
Being a sub can teach you a lot about CR arrangement and management :)
A3: Pinterest, blogs, visiting colleagues classrooms. Inspiration in design magazines and websites.
A3 Pinterest, articles on flexible learning, minds in motion catalog
A3: don't want things to get boring. Shake em up every once and a while.
A3: I try to read any article or blog post on flexible seating but would love to see classrooms where this is implemented.
They are not distractions. They are conversation starters
*******Q4 coming up in 1 minute*******
Yes - they freak out a little (in a goo way) when the desks are rearranged.
substitutes do not like my room because I have no teacher space and all different seating options!
A3. We focused on Walls that Talk for a quarter of the year and read articles that helped us rethink what is displayed.
A3: I've been doing a lot of writing in Starbucks locations this summer & think about why I am drawn to certain ones/seats
Q4: Do you use flexible seating (tables, couches) in your classroom?
A3: Also, just published a book on learning spaces. It's pretty cool.
Students are the same. They need choices & a comfortable, inviting setting. https://t.co/CHZrooAwSl
A3: I've been doing a lot of writing in Starbucks locations this summer & think about why I am drawn to certain ones/seats
what are the big takeaways from that book? I've never read it
You can see all over the village, until you become a resident of the the village 🤔 https://t.co/JcDOR71Nho
Being a sub can teach you a lot about CR arrangement and management :)
A3: Neighboring teachers are great resources. Collaborate with each other. You don't have to think everything up by yourself.
This is my feeling and I allow Ss to be a part of my room decor by bringing in an item for my wall for the year.
A4 I have a comfy chair in my classroom and a carpeted area. Would be nice to have more comfortable/flexible seating!
A4: collaborative desks. Light up cubes. Tables and game chairs.
A4: YES! Tables at diff heights with diff seating options plus many learning spaces all over room with fun chairs!
A4: Five below is a great place to find cheap flexible seating.
A4: About 1/4 of the way. Have some options, but not enough. Looking to write grants this year to add more https://t.co/j95fJBy4wj
Q4: Do you use flexible seating (tables, couches) in your classroom?
Idea: put out a request to friends on Facebook for donations. https://t.co/B80Eb3JIId
A4 I have a comfy chair in my classroom and a carpeted area. Would be nice to have more comfortable/flexible seating!
I generally move rooms but my Year 8s are in same room so i help decorate them. Great idea.
A4: I have seen a variety. Be careful not to cause more clutter and increase safety concerns as you think about this.
Articles. Take away = what is displayed should reflect current learning not something cute from last Oct https://t.co/1lvYmTHu78
what are the big takeaways from that book? I've never read it
A4: Couches, tables, stools, crates,.. In my world, you see it all! :)
A4: At a previous school where I worked, we had desktops w/separate chairs. Perfect for rearranging as needed!
A5.1: looking to get rid of my computer table (since I have Chromebooks) and get a couch!
Shout out for my Ts who are ditching their teacher desk to make room! https://t.co/X1PUe2bwg9
Q4: Do you use flexible seating (tables, couches) in your classroom?
That's the dream! I'm slowly replacing desks with furniture that I can find. Just got a new sofa and table!
A4 I have a couch, rolling chais, wobble chairs, and floor seats. Ss have many choices
A4 Would really like to see pictures/ideas of what this looks like in MS/HS. I know many of you have great examples to share!
A4: oh yes! I have an oversized, two-person bean bag. It's used as a reward in my classroom. https://t.co/zkhm5UgHlZ
Q4: Do you use flexible seating (tables, couches) in your classroom?
We had classroom walls covered w/ items hung years before/never taken down. Cultural shift was needed.
A4: As often as possible I allow Ss to sit wherever is comfy. I don't always sit in a desk to do my work, why should they?
A4: We are just starting to dip our toes into the flexible seating waters. We are discussing, "What will parents say?"
I teach in elementary world, but those desks with the attached chairs some MS/HS CR have are SO uncomfortable
A4 My favorite classroom had all kinds of seating options, including a couch, pillows, stools, etc...
I've gotten garden stools, lawn chairs, cubes you can sit on, and foldable stools. Works great for my little kids!
This is the best I've got. I do have 4 bean bags in the back reading corner. I've got big dreams though. https://t.co/EIV1ChGLGk
A3) you guys. most good ideas come from other Ts who don't have same background as you. Fresh perspective
Great point! https://t.co/E9Xx7XX8Sy
A4: I have seen a variety. Be careful not to cause more clutter and increase safety concerns as you think about this.
A4. We removed LARGE storage containers from hallways and created Reading Nooks w/ brightly colored chairs that were donated.
Love this idea. https://t.co/qubRjyGJ5s
This is my feeling and I allow Ss to be a part of my room decor by bringing in an item for my wall for the year.
*******Q5 coming up in 1 minute*******
Real question for some communities. Who has faced that and how have you handled it? https://t.co/KXus36TACC
A4: We are just starting to dip our toes into the flexible seating waters. We are discussing, "What will parents say?"
it is trickier with older kids who may feel inclined to snuggle up on larger pieces of furniture 🙁
Cool! I wish you had pictures to share!
Q5: If money/space were no object, what would you want to see in a classroom?
This is why I love Twitter, Instagram, etc. Get another view you couldn't have gotten 10 years ago. https://t.co/saRz4eZhuK
A3) you guys. most good ideas come from other Ts who don't have same background as you. Fresh perspective
Classroom management is something that must be considered before changing the seating.
I had a great response from parents! They even donated!
Maybe a better Q is, What should we say to parents about why we believe in flexible seating?
We push items no longer used into corners of a school. Summer = great time to clean out & show Ss how great their school can look.
I am guessing their kid would rather work from couch while home than kitchen table. Maybe use that perspective?
Do you have pics? I'm SUPER visual. I like to https://t.co/7mbL0LAYR0
A4. We removed LARGE storage containers from hallways and created Reading Nooks w/ brightly colored chairs that were donated.
A5: Does this Q allow for extensions of the CR? I would love a veg garden and chicken coups!
A5: I would want the rolling desks or tables. I would also want more comfortable areas for discussion. HS can be sterile.
A4: I would like to do half/half. Desk for Ss who want them and alternate seating for those who do not.
A5 Would love to get rid of desks and get tables with comfortable chairs. Corner areas with comfy seating.
A5: cabinets that descended from the ceiling with the push of a button so I could have lots of floor space. ;)
agree! I think it's more doable in a classroom than a common area (library) where I see 100s of Ss a day
Yes! Agreed. I love the idea of having separate areas for students. Keeps expectations in check.
She loves veggies and chickens!
A5 I'm writing all of this down
A5: just comfortable! I also want my room attached to the court yard (I've got my eye on our art room) where we can be in and out
A5 Seating options including standing desks, comfy chairs, and an endless supply of writing utensils!
A5: Options! Choice for kids each day for seating. Posters they care about and chose - or even made https://t.co/JCf3ORR0SP
Q5: If money/space were no object, what would you want to see in a classroom?
Do you know what I could teach with veggies & chickens?
Show us the $ . We will make great learning spaces :)
A5: More options. Standing desks would be the dream. I have so many kids who need to move around but never get the chance to!
A5.1 I also want a kitchen!! Training at HHS spoiled me last week!!
and most importantly for me, from people with other life experiences
Maybe what came first- chicken or the egg :)
A5: natural light! I'm in a cinder cave. I need some skylights :)
Love the idea of posters made by students. What a way to get buy-in!
A5 Space for all Ss learning styles to be adapted. I'd like spaces for all Ss & their different learning styles.
I was able to raise some tables we had hanging out around the school!
And for some kids, that works. Dome adults work for their office, which is their couch and laptop https://t.co/0m6UrejsYt
I am guessing their kid would rather work from couch while home than kitchen table. Maybe use that perspective?
A5: Virtual reality integrated with inquiry based learning.
A5 Videoconferencing eqpt to connect to the world; writeable walls/desktops; varied and comfy furniture; storage; workrooms; 1:1
A5: Options! Lots of options for seating and learning for my students!! OPTIONS!!!!
thanks. Check out for more details.
I'm the odd bird... I like/prefer working at the kitchen table!
That's a great idea! I bet the bed risers would work for this! I'll definitely have to keep my eye open for any extras
I hardly ever use the overhead light - way too bright! Use lamps but would LOVE skylights! https://t.co/qcsPK1y4Rn
A5: natural light! I'm in a cinder cave. I need some skylights :)
Love the clearly labeled zones for different purposes - this is what we are trying to create in library https://t.co/D1BDny3Iob
*******Q6 coming up in 1 minute*******
Theres a grassy space that leads to a service road by my room. We could knock some walls down and get it done!
My plan is to have a couple ironing boards this year as a cheap standing option.
A5 I would love to see a variety of seating options where students can stand or sit. I work from a standing desk now and love it!
Q6: What are some things that should be avoided in classroom design?
Just make an outdoor kitchen!
Definitely!!! My ideal classroom has to have an outside component. Where else would the alpac go?
Oh these desks are perfection.
or hotel room, coffee shop, airplane! The point is, we have choice & are more productive when comfy
A6: Always avoid creating spaces where you can't see ALL children!
I do too, sometimes. Depends on the task, but options are what's awesome
A6. Walls without white space w/ cute stuff not used as a tool for Ss learning.
Wow! So much energy & passion about classroom design tonight!
A6: Overwhelming clutter! Even too much of a good thing can be too much.
A6: Be aware of loading up classroom walls or areas with posters, decorations, etc... Could possibly be distracting to Ss.
A5 love this classroom; there's also a conference table for discussions and a quiet zone w/ indiv desk https://t.co/b84UEx4xqJ
A6: Cramped spaces, disorganization, clutter. We have to teach Ss how to organize - starts with the room! https://t.co/K9FWWmYw9Z
Q6: What are some things that should be avoided in classroom design?
A6: Be aware of spaces where students can feel comfortable being unengaged.
A6. Clutter, clutter everywhere - file cabinets crammed w/ worksheets that will never be used again as ed. shifts are needed today
Yes, love this! If it's on the wall, it needs to be important enough to be seen daily. https://t.co/pVidNvVpLj
A6. Walls without white space w/ cute stuff not used as a tool for Ss learning.
A6: Classroom management! We can't ignore that we have to have a plan in place for when issues with seating arise.
A6: In a 1:1 space, avoid arrangements where you can't see the Ss' screens.
A5:ambient lighting-when I'm doing paperwork, my CR lights go out for lack of movement.
A4 This yr I have dry erase tables,sofa,coffee table,wiggle cushs,ball & scoop chairs,floor table,standing desks,lap dks, pillows
A6) Totally enclosed areas, poor light, things you have to tippy toe around (fine china, bust of Emperor etc)
Lack of student voice. Don't design in a vacuum -- hear what your kids have to say https://t.co/rYbLpc8ono
Q6: What are some things that should be avoided in classroom design?
Very good point. Something I have learned the hard way these past two years. https://t.co/0tD8f4Dy9F
A6: In a 1:1 space, avoid arrangements where you can't see the Ss' screens.
Sometimes the clutter sends the message to students that there's no room for them. https://t.co/7YF4HsSYTn

My personal children are funny. They start scoping out the "island" spots for me if I move rooms or rearrange.
Each T rec'd $3,000 to redesign; room also has couches and small-group lesson area (forgot to share that!) https://t.co/Kuv3b5Fb8q

A4 and are great resources for flexible seating
A6 Must be organized and don't go so far over that you forget about the kid that just needs to have their own desk.
A6: rebuke unnecessary clutter! If you like it that way in your CR, God only knows how bad your house is😳 https://t.co/2ncj5c9Mdx
Q6: What are some things that should be avoided in classroom design?
A6: Avoid scratching the floor right after the custodian waxes it. Also ... the principal should avoid walking on wet wax.
*******Q7 coming up in 1 minute*******
Oh so jealous.. RT : Each T rec'd $3,000 to redesign; room also has couches and small-group lesson area
Every teacher in the building?
Q7: What prevents teachers from rearranging desks and/or creating inviting spaces?
LOL! Yes! My custodian says the hallways are his classroom. Quit messing them up! :)
A6. Avoid tables that push together (go for smooth surface of a single table); forget flexibility of one piece; get diff pieces.
A7: Time, routine, habits, fear of change, control
A7: A-Best they know. B-Keep control. C-Easy
A7 First thought is time... Second thought is not sure what to do or where to start.
every teacher who joined 3 yrs of training & coaching to design student-driven classrooms (almost everyone)
School doesn't start until you can see your face in the floors. https://t.co/pk4ZMVSN2C
A6: Avoid scratching the floor right after the custodian waxes it. Also ... the principal should avoid walking on wet wax.
A7 Money, Physical space, time, possibly admin preference.
A7: "That's the way it's always been!" Worst phrase in education... management of it all... Where's my stuff going to go?
A7: Space! SPACE SPACE SPACE
A7: Fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of being out of their comfort zone. Gotta move past it! https://t.co/H6UWE4InIi
Q7: What prevents teachers from rearranging desks and/or creating inviting spaces?
A7: I think fear is huge, but most of the time people will support you once they see how it's benefitting kids
A7) When it's not your room. You come in and then an hour later someone else uses it.
A.5 This snapshot of my former classroom is dated, but the principle (reflecting on design) applies to https://t.co/5XtCKZcTJH
Physical space shifts paradigms ... really counts! Worth every penny.
Teachers can be nervous about trying new stuff. The desire to stay safe can trump the desire to innovate. https://t.co/OlsELfzBE1
Q7: What prevents teachers from rearranging desks and/or creating inviting spaces?
A7 Fear of losing control, money, and of course, "What will parents say?" It is intimidating to step out and try something new.
we just write straight in my tables! A little elbow grease and a magic eraser and it's like new!
A7: Lack of knowledge, Lack of funds https://t.co/eHKmrMygBp
Q7: What prevents teachers from rearranging desks and/or creating inviting spaces?
I like to remind folk that Jupiter had 12 moons.
Couldn't agree more! RT : Physical space shifts paradigms ... really counts! Worth every penny.
If pedagogy hasn't shifted at all, T may not see a need for shifting space, either
A7: 2nd reason is trying to figure out how to do it different and get the "problem" Ss away from each other.Where's the Vodka? lol
Such an important point, Kristen! https://t.co/mPLDnXhFtQ
If pedagogy hasn't shifted at all, T may not see a need for shifting space, either
A7. The structures of conventional educ make it hard to think outside the box & get a new vision; EMPOWER Ts (really don't need $)
Only July and you need Vodka? Must have had some wonderful kids over the years! :)
A7.Ts classroom is very near and dear to them in elem. A school-wide discussion about learning environments for Ss can be helpful.
*******FInal Question coming up in 1 minute*******
FQ: What do you commit to doing to create an awesome physical space for your students?
Yes! We change pedagogy first; then furniture, bell schedules, curriculum ... build a "felt need" among Ts https://t.co/sGoJVPOwxj
If pedagogy hasn't shifted at all, T may not see a need for shifting space, either
I was searching out photos of recent resources I have come across but, darn the luck, I can't find them :-(
FA: Showing some great examples of what I have seen/can find after observations where space could have made a difference.
FA: Stepping out of my comfort zone. Trying new things, rethinking, and going back at it. Also getting $$! https://t.co/zGUZfDH4VQ
FQ: What do you commit to doing to create an awesome physical space for your students?
A7 class mangt was 1 of my concerns, but if u begin small and add 2 it when you see what works it can be a great thing for sts
A8 Say yes when Ts ask if they can try something new, get rid of something old, repurpose a space, etc...
I've done all the "free" change I can, so this year I am committed to writing grants to help my Ss' vision become a reality
FA I want to work on giving Ss more of a voice in classroom space design. How can I create a space that works for them?
FA: continuing to seek out the best options and making sure they work in my CR with my Ss!
FA: Continue to lead Student-Centered Classrooms PD w/Ts. https://t.co/9jwHjz3ZDe
FQ: What do you commit to doing to create an awesome physical space for your students?
I'm interesting in this as well. One of my goals.
FQ: Listen to the kids. Really pay attention to what's working and what's not. Consider all learning styles in the design.
THIS. https://t.co/kmchHPl76T
A8 Say yes when Ts ask if they can try something new, get rid of something old, repurpose a space, etc...
I secured several last year, but it is hard to find $$ for furniture. Much easier to find cash these days
FQ: I commit to offering more opportunities to learning around the room in free space this school year. LESS DESK LEARNING !
A7 As an administrator, continue to have conversations about learning spaces and support our teachers who are willing to try.
Thank you for being a part of the fastest hour of the week! We love learning with you. Have a great week!
THIS RT : A7 continue to have conversations about learning spaces and support our teachers who are willing to try.
FA knowing that what works 1 yr may not for the next. Space needs to meet st needs, not the teachers.
Yes! We had 3 Ts who wanted to run one big classroom ask to take down a wall; Supt. did it!
Hi Kudos for all great ideas! Love the design samples!
FA: My goal is to support my teachers and students by sharing ideas, encouraging, finding funding,...
Share some of those sites and links https://t.co/sH0MyWCi2u

It was absolutely wonderful learning with all of you tonight! Thank you for joining and showing your passion for classroom design!
A7: Fear. A colleague told me today that she'd only have her students in rows otherwise she'd lose control. 😞
we did a school wide survey and got about 30% to respond. Then formed S committee that met once a month
Thank you to for her leadership tonight! Love the passion she shares each day with her students!
Thank you all for joining our chat! Great job for your leadership! You are a great teacher!
