Best field trip: Little Switzerland Ski Trip! Or Hawaii in the Choir! Hard for this Wisconsin Boy to Choose!
Stefanie from Illinois. 8th ELA and team lead. When I was young we got to go to a local nature center where workers took us on a hike where we found evidence of gnomes #XPLAP
Glad to have you here today… Thanks for subscribing to my Youtube Channel today… Don’t forget to comment on my Dice video for a chance to win. https://t.co/qwRGxpJlxv#XPLAP
HI! Adam from South Carolina. US History. I vaguely remember going to Ft Ticonderoga and they told a story about Pea Soup. Stayed with me but have no idea why... #xplap
Josh Stock, 6th grade Language Arts, Olathe, KS. I honestly can't remember field trips I went on. I saw the musical Fame in London when I was in HS for our HS band trip. Bigger than the typical field trip. #xplap
A1: In my Amazing food truck race Ss create food trucks & sig dishes and "travel" across the US learning about regional cuisine and adapting their sig dishes to flavors of that region. #XPLAP
Hey all from NYC, teaching 6-8 SS. My favorite trips were those taken with the hiking club in HS, living in NYC it was always great to become one with nature beyond Central and Prospect Park #XPLAP
a1) my game is set in space, I try to match the challenges to tasks that fit into that location. Made submarines to explore density and told them we were exploring a water world. #xplap
A1: Love using Antike board game as a capstone experience to us learning about ancient civs in World History. Students love it and makes all the cultures come to life. #XPLAP
A1: Scenario based engineering and design challenges provide an opportunity to really engage students in a dynamic and exciting environment. Control over the narrative helps create the context. #XPLAP
Link to a great board game in general, but also good for a class game for World History Teachers… Not hard, but hard to master… Perfect for anyone! Link: https://t.co/T61xs8cwTg#XPLAP#Gbl#sschat
Is it better than their first round of games? Many I played used play as reward, which goes against most pedagogical models, and were digital worksheets,. Hope its better than what I've played :o #XPLAP
A1: working at giving side quest opportunities that use flipgrid videos that will be filmed in or represent different areas. Inferences and evidence required to progress to next one. #XPLAP
A1) My game has a lot of story elements, so on Monday we had to take a "time machine" to the 1800's which is the setting of our current novel. I used a Youtube video of a time travel effect to complete the experience. Super cheesy but fun. #xplap
A1) haven’t really used any games. I terested to see what others have used. I will have students creating a Progressive Era game in the spirit of Monopoly. #XPLAP
A2: We also took a trip up Mt. Everest a month ago to go along with our novel about climbing Mt. Everest. Then we rolled dice to see who lost limbs on the climb. Ss couldn't use that hand for the rest of the day. #xplap
We tried your boss fight the other week, worked pretty well, but we didn't have nearly enough time to actually defeat him. Guess I have to modify it a bit for our class time. #xplap
I think Ss like the "campy-ness". I work with a few teachers that voice act in my narrative. Ss like to guess which teachers are doing the voice acting! #xplap
No, I've had to tweak as well. I've been modifying and played again this week. Only had 1 group defeat in a 90 min class.I think boss has too much Hit Points. Working on an updated post with my new spreadsheet based version! #xplap
ours is only 42 min, and I had to explain how the game worked in that time too. I included if everyone got the question right we caused double damage. #xplap
A2: The biggest improvement I made the first time around was a more robust storyline. This grabbed the students attention. Next iteration will be adding more game mechanics! #XPLAP
A2: how do you not motivate them with play and games? Roll the dice, earn or use an item, build with LEGO bricks, create with Play-Doh, #sketchnotes as side quests #XPLAP
Exactly. I used to stress about things needing to look perfect, but kids like the cheesy stuff. They also like picking out mistakes in the video like buildings in the background that give away my location. #xplap
A2 you motivate the Ss with points, rewards, quests ... nope all those work but the best motivation is letting your passion and enthusiasm leak out so they can see ... #XPLAP
A2: I am still learning how to do this but I am finding there has to be an element of competition, discovery and mystery in most to be successful #XPLAP
BUT! Oh my Goodness! I can't believe someone is using what I'm writing! I'm glad to hear it and would love suggestions on how to improve. I'll be posting in the last couple of days... #xplap
a2) I try to make my story interesting so they want to know what happens next. Try to get them to see how the material applies the the "real world" of our game. Haven't been very successful this year though :( #xplap
A2: I love to make items and power ups in my game. The students seem to love collecting them and seeing what comes next. Here is a video to help you come up with your own. https://t.co/IHyrVHxU7r#XPLAP
That. Is. Awesome! A big theme in my book is how teachers adapt and appropriate games to fit curricular goals. Also the play-analyze-then remake a game cycle! Love it! #XPLAP
A3: I like to listen for things the Ss ask about that aren’t covered in class. When I have enough I put together side quests with multiple options. Just need to find a way to get more Ss to go on them. [sigh] #XPLAP
A3: I try to have a wide range of side quest options. Kids can create videos, posters, in-class presentations, solve challenge questions, etc. I also give bonuses for teams who work with other teams for those social learners. #xplap
a3) I want to build a beginner, intermediate, and advanced path for the story line for each unit. If you're struggling you can start at beginner if your better start higher. Not quite at that point as a teacher yet though. #xplap
A3 I am working on building Side Narratives that scaffold content and skills through 2nd semester. Ss have to find cards to start and then build from there. #XPLAP
A3: I have lots of student choice in my game. One example I love is my Adventure Paths. These allow students to go on an optional adventure. They must decide if they are in or out with imperfect information. In short, they must take a risk. #XPLAP
A3: side quests that appeal to many skill levels and types, classroom activities that allow hands on and collaborative options, skill extensions on quests for Ss who need more of a challenge #XPLAP
A3: Another way I add choice to my game is by allowing tons of choice and creativity in side quests. Here is my latest video on them. https://t.co/niPGpVm1QV Subscribe today! #XPLAP
Side tangent, my oldest son is wanting Lord of the Rings Core set, I guess I know what I will be doing over break Lord Of The Rings: The Card Game (MEC01) https://t.co/GTBrqkgVpT#XPLAP
I have a 90 min class. We have small group activities and then breakout sessions. We come back together at the end of class to wrap up. Some work independently, some in groups, Lots of conferencing. #XPLAP
A3: I like to provide a plethora of activities for students to choose from in order to gain a skill or content. If they feel like they need more practice they can choose to do so in order to be prepared for their next battle. #XPLAP
One of the BEST parts of gamification, GBL, and game-like/gameful learning actually is when teachers view themselves as designers of learning experiences! #xplap
I moved a bit away from all digital this year. There is some evidence that people retain more by writing things by hand and physically manipulating. Love what you've described! #xplap
Agreed. Once teachers free themselves by seeing themselves as game designers, or designers of educational experiences, there are just so many possibilities
#XPLAP
Good points, and valuable what teachers can bring to conversations about GBL. I love social deduction games, like Werewolf, to get conversation going #XPLAP
My revelation was realizing that when I play a game I want to be the center of the game universe. The same is true of each student in class. No one plays Madden to be a Left Guard. They are the Quarterback! We should design class experiences to make Ss the center! #XPLAP
A4 I adapt One Night Ultimate Werewolf, having Ss play, then reskin to be about the Salem With Trials. The social deduction mechanic drives the experience @beziergames#xplap
RT @MatthewFarber: I'm messing around with @classcraftgame quests, a wonderful addition to choice-based learning, a favorite varietal of gamification!#xplap

My kids get way into Boss Battles. (They come into the room excited for them). I need to tie the quest to an advantage in the battle…just thinking aloud here. #XPLAP
Interestingly, video games are not like other digital technologies. Some are didactic, balanced and good (ie @DragonBox). But many new games are experiences meant to be read like texts. Like @GoneHomeGame or @HerStoryGame or What Remains of Edith Finch from @A_i#XPLAP
A4 I get inspired by commercial games though don't use many. My power cards are created on https://t.co/h4JFWxcGam and YuGiOh is a basis for some cards. My RPG experiences help with the boss battles. #XPLAP
Up until now my boss battle has really just been the test. I’m looking forward to revamping by reading a bunch of all the ideas mentioned here, including @MrPowley blog post #XPLAP
A5: Ts in my book never used dashboards. Instead, they designed open-ended reflection questions delivered on Google Classroom, Schoology, etc. It's good practice! #XPLAP
A5 Design assessments that are in the game spirit. Have students author and publish game reviews after play. Have students write Star Trek-inspired Captain's Log reports, ask playtest-style questions. #XPLAP
This is awesome! Just writing reflection prompts for this semester. So changing them up to be more gasified…not sure how yet, but the gears are turning. #XPLAP
A5 In my book, @EdGamer remarked, "Go Where the Game Takes You!" in other words, when using games to teach, assess as you go - esp. when games are not didactic and are unpredictable, like @CivGame! #XPLAP
Captains logs would fit nicely into my class, but I'm not sure how often I'd have the students do it. was thinking weekly, but that seemed like too much #xplap

I like how this group can laugh at ourselves and with me…
I usually have reflections ready to go for Ss to do after a test major project. I learn so many ways to improve from these. #XPLAP (even if they aren’t “gasified”
Maybe notes during a game, and then more after. I have student write filed journals from roles in Pandemic. But they get to write it better after playing. It's a balance for sure! #XPLAP

Thanks! Validation supersedes credibility with the students. They know when you are faking... in the mean time they will explain every detail of battling and why their card is more valuable ... I’m learning the cartoons help too. #xplap
A6- "Minecraft and other open-world games are being harnessed to teach course content by taking advantage of students’ creativity." My latest @edutopia! "Learning by Tinkering" https://t.co/p713xs1zCG#XPLAP
Your welcome! It’s a great book with lots of ideas. Too often, books/people just talk about what we need to do in education. #xplap dives deep into HOW to do it. It is THE book on educational gamification. Glad we have connected. #dsu360
A6: Used @Minecraft for some engineering challenges in the past. Currently exploring the potential for VR experiences to occupy a similar niche in the next game iteration. #XPLAP
Super honored to hear this about #XPLAP… Love hearing that you find it to be practical and helpful to you designing playful yet powerful experiences in your classroom.

a7) My roll as game master is to put the students into a position where they can explore and learn the target standards. And hopefully have fun! #xplap
A7: Role as game master is to infuse joy and passion into the classroom by creating an environment where Ss aren't only immersed, but empowered! #xplap#tlap
A7 As a "Game-Master" I feel it is my duty to design a game that appeals to the motivations of all of the various types of students/players.Both the internal and external motives. #XPLAP
A7: Find what works..repeat, remove what doesn’t, find new ideas to explore and create learning opportunities that involve the Ss in a game-type setting. #XPLAP#alwaysinbeta
A6 I was hesitant with MS buying Minecraft, monetization shouldn’t box in creativity, miss a pile of blocks of legos, not saying I don’t appreciate the themed boxes that #playlap gives away ... #XPLAP
