    Question 2 Coming Up! #txeduchat
  • jeff_samuelson Nov 6 @ 9:18 PM EST
A1. When Ss have choice learning becomes personal. When it's personal, they work harder, explore different learning paths, utilize tools that may be new.... Ss have permission to learn their way #txeduchat
  • nnekamcgee Nov 6 @ 9:18 PM EST
    Here is question 2! #txeduchat
  • gayajefferson Nov 6 @ 9:18 PM EST
#txeduchat A1:One benefit of student choice is an increase in relevancy and choice sharpens their critical thinking skills because the learning is grounded in their passions and interests. https://t.co/NdkyGhqC1L

#txeduchat A2: Benefits are many! Student choice increases relevance for students when done in an authentic way.
  • nnekamcgee Nov 6 @ 9:20 PM EST

    Question 3 coming up! #txeduchat
  • elena_SF_CA Nov 6 @ 9:23 PM EST
A1: As a 5th grade teacher, I’ve found the more choice I provide my students the more buy-in & the more true independence my students show throughout the year. And, the more they can do without me, the more they can truly do! #txeduchat
  • jeff_samuelson Nov 6 @ 9:23 PM EST
A2 Relevant and meaningful content. Ss need to connect with the content then have a voice in how they interact with it. #txeduchat

    Here is question 3 #txeduchat
  • jmathewsMEd Nov 6 @ 9:25 PM EST
A1: S choice allows learners to take ownership of their learning and be more engaged. #txeduchat
  • gayajefferson Nov 6 @ 9:25 PM EST
#txeduchat I concur, this might be by way of an PSA, writing to an authentic audience or cause to serve a family or group of individuals, a presentation or video. Kids now a days are tech savvy and skilled at designing products via social media.
    In reply to @nnekamcgee
  • elena_SF_CA Nov 6 @ 9:26 PM EST
A2: Well, all of them. However, if I’d have to prioritize... A student-centered classroom has to include choices regarding how they learn the curriculum & where they go deep with content. The rest is frosting in my opinion. #txeduchat
  • nnekamcgee Nov 6 @ 9:27 PM EST
#txeduchat Authentic learning has a foundation in student choice. Kids can work wonders with smartphones and a social media account.
    In reply to @gayajefferson
  • jmathewsMEd Nov 6 @ 9:27 PM EST
A3: Prior to teaching new content, poll ss on how they would like to learn the material. Then use those choices to create lessons/ products. #txeduchat
  • nnekamcgee Nov 6 @ 9:28 PM EST
Q3: Start simple. I think doing too much too soon can lead to unintended, negative results. #txeduchat
  • ToshMcGaughy Nov 6 @ 9:28 PM EST
#txeduchat Yesterday I observed a Design Center in a high school where a teacher talked through a lesson with a few students...using their input for her planning.
    • gayajefferson Nov 6 @ 9:21 PM EST

    Question 4 coming up #txeduchat
  • ToshMcGaughy Nov 6 @ 9:30 PM EST
    #txeduchat “Authentic audience” is key.

    Question 4 #txeduchat
  • jeff_samuelson Nov 6 @ 9:31 PM EST
A3 Ts should include Ss when planning lessons/projects. S input allows Ts to understand what Ss are thinking and then plan around that thinking. #txeduchat
  • elena_SF_CA Nov 6 @ 9:31 PM EST
A3: Choice can be introduced on the first day, but if the children have no experience with having choice or control, then maybe start small. Teachers can begin by letting them vote on specific items or by providing choices as part of written assignments. #txeduchat
  • nnekamcgee Nov 6 @ 9:32 PM EST
Do you think surveys can aid in Ss input when planning? #txeduchat
    In reply to @jeff_samuelson
  • jmathewsMEd Nov 6 @ 9:33 PM EST
A4: When Ts limit S choice, it allows Ss the opportunity to think and work outside their comfort zone. This work allows them to grow! #txeduchat
  • nnekamcgee Nov 6 @ 9:34 PM EST
I agree. Too much choice is not good if students don't have experience choosing. #txeduchat
    In reply to @elena_SF_CA
  • ToshMcGaughy Nov 6 @ 9:34 PM EST
#txeduchat A4: It works well to mix it up. Choice of content, choice of process, choice of how to show mastery....but not all at the same time.
  • jeff_samuelson Nov 6 @ 9:34 PM EST
Surveys can be a great help...however, I think open discussions allows Ss to truly voice where they are in their thinking. This can allow Ts to plan more specifically for S learning #txeduchat
    • nnekamcgee Nov 6 @ 9:32 PM EST
Do you think surveys can aid in Ss input when planning? #txeduchat

    Choice Challenge! #txeduchat
  • gayajefferson Nov 6 @ 9:35 PM EST
#txeduchat A3: One way might be to brainstorm mini projects together. I remember as a Sci tchr, my stnds expressed they wanted to create a weather channel to engage in the learning. As the tchr, I took risks & had 2 trust the journey w teks in 🖐🏾. https://t.co/7vHFg7AnfY

    In reply to @nnekamcgee, @jeff_samuelson
  • jeff_samuelson Nov 6 @ 9:37 PM EST
A4 I think if Ts use the data from S discussions, survey, etc., they will plan the learning around their students. This process will naturally provide structure without being restrictive #txeduchat
  • jmathewsMEd Nov 6 @ 9:39 PM EST
A5: I think that the choice had to be based on the assignment/product, then let students choose the best way to show mastery. #txeduchat
  • nnekamcgee Nov 6 @ 9:39 PM EST
    A5: I'm a big fan of the Differentiation Menus from @gtconsultant https://t.co/jSjFXPCQDk #txeduchat
  • elena_SF_CA Nov 6 @ 9:39 PM EST
A4: Yes, not providing limits in a classroom could literally be unsafe. Folks interested in providing more choice or starting to move toward a student-led classroom need to read @PaulSolarz’s book on the subject. It’s inspiring! #txeduchat
  • nnekamcgee Nov 6 @ 9:40 PM EST
Yes! Students produce more interesting and meaningful work when they can choose how they demonstrate mastery. #txeduchat

How time flies! Question 6 is up. #txeduchat
  • elena_SF_CA Nov 6 @ 9:42 PM EST
A5: I love lessons that include choice “stations” or “centers” but running such a lesson takes experience & careful planning. New teachers should have mentors to help them. #txeduchat
  • nnekamcgee Nov 6 @ 9:44 PM EST
I agree. Wouldn't it be interesting to have an apprentice-type relationship in teacher where a veteran and newbie co-teach for a 1 or 2? #txeduchat
    In reply to @elena_SF_CA
  • nnekamcgee Nov 6 @ 9:46 PM EST
A6: I think if teachers can choose the types of PD that are most relevant to their classrooms, they are better equipped to offer students choice in how they learn or demonstrate learning. #txeduchat
  • jeff_samuelson Nov 6 @ 9:46 PM EST
There are many tech ways to collect student thinking, but f2f is unbelievably valuable. I think there is way to use both effectively. That's what I try to instill in the Ts I work with. #txeduchat
    • nnekamcgee Nov 6 @ 9:35 PM EST

    Question 7 coming up #txeduchat
  • gayajefferson Nov 6 @ 9:50 PM EST
#txeduchat A4: This is a way to model another best practice in adult learning. Skilled tchr and district leaders seek choice in the work, this helps to increase commitment and consensus.

    Here's Question 7 #txeduchat
  • nnekamcgee Nov 6 @ 9:52 PM EST
Growth and risk-taking are critical components in a culture of choice. #txeduchat
    In reply to @ToshMcGaughy

    #txeduchat A7: Choice for PD? @jbretzmann
  • nnekamcgee Nov 6 @ 9:54 PM EST

A7 By letting Ss know that they as Ts and Admin have been allowed choice in their job. Choice in implementing innovative practices, choice in PD, choice in instructional delivery methods. Then Ts model choice for Ss when planning 4 learning #txeduchat
  • nnekamcgee Nov 6 @ 9:57 PM EST
Q8: I working with teachers next week on differentiation. Choice will definitely be a part of the conversation. #txeduchat

#txeduchat A7: Tchrs & admins can create this culture by starting small with choice in faculty /team mtgs (flipped, using a LMS course, or blended). Using resources to poll how educators like to learn & engage, places them in the seat of stdnts to experience choice 1st 🖐🏾.

Today in science to learn more about mixtures, solutions, interactions & molecules, my students used ingredients to make scented bath bombs from scratch! #Choice ingredients: Baking soda, herbal sea salt, cornstarch, citric acid, epsom salts, oil, essential oils. #txeduchat
