Hi Sue from NJ excited to talk global collaboration
My eldest is in Grade 1 and youngest in Kindergarten, love the creativity and curiousity!
Hello, Sharon, Kindergarten teacher in Vermont. Here for a bit.
Bob from Illinois popping in to
A1: Via Adobe Connect, US Ss interact w/Ss in Japan. Instructors & students discuss their experience: https://t.co/o8i1h1vugs
A1: I don't connect with classrooms on a global scale but I do often connect with fellow learners around the world!
That's great thinking Ken! Nice work. A1
A1: No, but ❤️to! Considering class Twitter where Ss can "talk" & hangouts would be fun too. https://t.co/dB0KYWwcMY
Q1. Do you currently connect your class with a classroom in another country? If so, how? If not, how would you like to?
A1: I've partnered with a T in Morocco and our Ss interact via blog and mutual writing assignments: https://t.co/1zGNHeLm6P
A1: Yes--personal connections made through TGC. working on Blair foundation connection now!
James, can one not be a classroom? LOL
A1: No I do not connect with a class in another country. Would love to see/read ideas from other teachers.
Hi Everyone - Jennifer fm Longview joining late for global ed chat. Looking forward to listening and learning!
Thanks for joining as always! I'm so glad the heat wave is over here!
funny you say that! Now that I think of it yes, one person can be a classroom of thinking all on their own!
First time to be a part of this chat! Going to be working with k-4 ss and tech. Can't wait to make all students global
thanks! It's a lot of fun & eye opening in so many ways. Very humanizing for both me & Ss
A1: Would love to connect w/ similar cuuiculum topics & grade levels, pen pals, show Ss true global learning
Thank you for joining - glad we will have your voice in the conversation tonight!
Howdy, Dave from San Francisco. Love global classroom connection stories. Do tell.
I would LOVE to connect with a high school group in Gaza! Any leads?
A1 I would love to establish global pen pals w/ Ss, connect w/ scientists across world & get an intercontinental
A1 this was our first year as global school. We were able to skype with a few different schools and teachers in China
Thanks for joining - we love on !
A1: have participated in Global Read Aloud past 2 years. Would like to partner thru global project.
A1 I would like my Ss to have global pen pals via our or other resource and then incorporate
I love ! Never thought about using it this way. Thanks for sharing.
A1: We didn't this year. I'd love to connect like did through last year!
Hi! Fran from Clearwater, Florida! 👏😊🌎
my connection is w/ a univ instructor. I can ask her
As a student - which platforms do you use to connect with others? https://t.co/0sC1GnP7SB
A1: I don't connect with classrooms on a global scale but I do often connect with fellow learners around the world!
Need to keep them as such as they move up through the levels.
A1: Ayyy If I told ALL of you how hard it was but I managed to connect my classes w one in PA! Aleluya!
I'd love to "chat" with you more about this. Perhaps after the . I teach a writing class, so this is very relevant.
Wow, this chat is already
A1 I use & as platforms to connect with others.
A1 I don't yet- but would love to put together something for my Intro to Foreign Lang class through maybe Skype?
Welcome! Glad you found our little chat!
Well done. A waterfall starts with one drop of water!
twitter! Twitter is an amazing platform to connect with Ss and learners across the globe!
A1: I have not done this for my students yet, but I think Skype is an easy and powerful tool to foster cultural exchange
Ss find many similarities. Also interesting in that the medium gives Gaza Ss a voice to be able to be heard
Hi everyone, Ian from the UK here, first timer
A1 Would love to collaborate with a classroom across the world
She was the who started it on connecting classes! TY Fran! https://t.co/aDwbIQ8OaP
Hi! Fran from Clearwater, Florida! 👏😊🌎
Platforms: Schoology, Edmodo, GHO, Skype, Voxer. https://t.co/WeK82G8lNO
As a student - which platforms do you use to connect with others? https://t.co/0sC1GnP7SB
A1: I don't connect with classrooms on a global scale but I do often connect with fellow learners around the world!
Yes and one that needs to be heard as much as anyone's.
Q2: What are the challenges of connecting/working with a classroom abroad?
RT:A1:I have not done this4 my Ss yet, but I think Skype is an easy & powerful tool to foster cultural exchange
A1: We've connected regularly with a US class this year using Google hangout. Fantastic international learning
A1 is easy & fun to connect children globally with what you are exploring. Opens perspective. https://t.co/ka4xpO7Mpl
A1: I'm our building's diversity liaison. Always looking for opportunities to expand our borders.
A2: for me it was my technology then timezones.
A1: film = the great connector. who doesn't love a good a story?
Were you able to keep it going? Was it just for one project?
It really IS, if you have good connection at school, which we lack! Fortunately, we managed ubiquitously!
Mystery Skype would be great for that age group.
Do you have sustained connections with Ss around the world on twitter? If so, any tips?
I currently help Ts build networks and collaborative frameworks for partnerships and am writing a book on it for
A2: 1st things that come to my mind are time zones & language. https://t.co/2vQG6m8Cfs
Q2: What are the challenges of connecting/working with a classroom abroad?
A1 opens a private classroom blog to another class. It's on my "to-do" for this year!
A2: Challenges = time zones & creating time in busy schedule
is great at connecting w/ DM on Twitter and we've used Padlet https://t.co/0WSdKlE3U5
A1: Ayyy If I told ALL of you how hard it was but I managed to connect my classes w one in PA! Aleluya!
A2: Finding a platform can be one challenge. GlobalCOLab project is an example of a solution: https://t.co/uZVQ6lSUR4
Okay, these options are now on my list for further study: Adode Connect, Skype, Google Hangouts, and Padlet. Any others?
That's awesome Jennifer, will be a much sought after text!
A2: Time zones. Learning practice, learning contexts & learning structures. If you understand it, it helps unpack stuff more
I agree I had same issues with time zones and quality connection a few times using Skype
We began in March (our back to school time) until Mrs Kociela´s classes were out, last May!! FABULOUS!
Good platforms for connecting with classrooms abroad! https://t.co/SbrJ1rsldc
A2: for me it has been time zones. I'd love to work with others but our school times often permit
interesting! I have always found Google Hangouts to be glitchier.
I am most concerned with building equitable partnerships that benefit both communities, not just one "using" the other
. Oh, yes. time zones are a challenge to global ed connections. How do Ts overcome that?
A2: biggest worry I think is how to handle time difference- but I can go Canada not France or Mexico instead of Spain I guess
classes from diff geo areas have videoconference. Ss use Y/N Qs to figure out where other class is
A2: I had to switch preps a few times to make it work for hangouts in the US. World would be harder yet.
have you done a periscope? havent tried it yet...
A2 A challenge could be having the same expectation and keeping up with the collaboration and it not being one sided.
A2: time zones. But have videoed and emailed to our partner classes. Almost as good as realtime.
Make the time and effort. Understand your connections & maintain them. Try and relate to what they do https://t.co/WRwzDIyE13
Do you have sustained connections with Ss around the world on twitter? If so, any tips?
google hangouts is my fav :)
Yes, this is often overlooked, but critical. https://t.co/7hd9Bvdwen
I am most concerned with building equitable partnerships that benefit both communities, not just one "using" the other
I live in constant fear I have no real or new advice to give! It's such hard work.
A2 When we model how we have conversations outside of our classrooms, then the platforms have meaning. https://t.co/zJmixfK3Wq
My biggest challenge is that we're a community program, not a "school" per se. Making connections w/ intl schools is tough
Europe might be easier if they do late afternoon and you did first thing in the morning. Still might be tough.
A2 time differences, having a backup plan if things fall thru, having a 2nd means for connecting if tech fails
If you don't mind asynchronous, try Voxer! https://t.co/Dntv4uzO2n
A2: for me it has been time zones. I'd love to work with others but our school times often permit
Video?? https://t.co/fV6yESVWt3
. Oh, yes. time zones are a challenge to global ed connections. How do Ts overcome that?
good point. how do you think this can be done?
further south into Central/South America there are opportunities as well
What do you like about Google Hangouts?
That´s a big one, Jennifer! We made our Ss write in Eng & Sp so both classes benefited fr each other! Amazing!
A2: Time, technology, and language can be a challenge.
A2: Ts get worried about language diffs--Ts need competencies themselves to navigate the complexities
I love this idea! Sharing the same assignment and seeing how it's interpreted differently!
A2 Unfortunately, sometimes it is getting the teacher on board to try something new. But we keep trying to connect and inspire
blogs seems to be best option without time zone issues. Ss could post writing, videos, etc. https://t.co/aaMT00iGGX
A2: biggest worry I think is how to handle time difference- but I can go Canada not France or Mexico instead of Spain I guess
Exactly! That's how Florida worked with Spain! https://t.co/meHnDg8Soj
Europe might be easier if they do late afternoon and you did first thing in the morning. Still might be tough.
A2: Biggest challenge this year was lack of motivation on both sides of the student collab. Many assumptions on both sides
Q3. What advice do you have for other teachers on starting/joining a global collaborative project?
Hi awesome friends at ! Checking in a little late :) Excited for this great topic!
We use Zoom which is a web based videoconference platform for national and international connections!
Asynchronous projects can help with the time zones. And maybe having one or two in-person discussions https://t.co/UGDP6gKopA
A2: time zones. But have videoed and emailed to our partner classes. Almost as good as realtime.
oh...it won't be long next Thu pass the scope edu topic is Global Connections
have you worked w/Mystery Skype? I think it's going to be my trial start. Thoughts? Good place?
A3: You really have to dive in and try it!
That's how we link with Michigan, USA
couldn't agree more! What strategies have you seen work best for developing Ts global ed competencies?
A2: I agree w who told me once that tech is only a tiny part of success. Build trust and partnerships work.
Your voice is valid and your opinion needs to be heard.
- that 2nd means is essential! Are you free to use any social network/media platform? https://t.co/WzQVnzT64j
A2 time differences, having a backup plan if things fall thru, having a 2nd means for connecting if tech fails
ABSOLUTELY! https://t.co/b8fmV2vK3L
A2 Unfortunately, sometimes it is getting the teacher on board to try something new. But we keep trying to connect and inspire
A3: Our first attempt didn't work, but we kept at it, finding better avenues.
Thanks so much. This is what is important for me because the platform is what works/meshes with my Ss exploration
A3: student input + involvement on both sides to make a global collaborative project work
Q3 There is never enough communication between the parties in a global collab. project. Staying in touch is key to success!
RT:@ProfeEdTech@FabianaLCasella I love this idea!Sharing the same assignment&seeing how it's interpreted differently!
A3: It always has helped me to have a colleague joining in with me! Learning & exploring together!
A3: Try & don't give up. Even a small connection is a valid learning experience. https://t.co/RH25gI8BWQ
Q3. What advice do you have for other teachers on starting/joining a global collaborative project?
A3: Don't be afraid to challenge one another's ideas. Often a little challenge will enable the best answers to be given
A3 join chats like to connect with great educators from around the world.
A2. When you build up the excitement for a project and then get crickets on the other end. Very disappointing.
agree. way to go! https://t.co/LrcXcIbgUX
blogs seems to be best option without time zone issues. Ss could post writing, videos, etc. https://t.co/aaMT00iGGX
A2: biggest worry I think is how to handle time difference- but I can go Canada not France or Mexico instead of Spain I guess
Thanks for joining us again!
Mike from MD, just crossed the DC-MD border after science class. (EL LMS)
A3 Have 2nd way to connect w/ class, do dry runs prior to start, model cross-cultural respect, make time for reflection
Great point as it demonstrates purposeful language, respect and a love of learning wherever you are
RT:Q3There is never enuf communic between the parties in a global collab. project. Staying in touch is key to success!
- what kinds of assumptions do students have? https://t.co/5bhVTXdPyN
A2: Biggest challenge this year was lack of motivation on both sides of the student collab. Many assumptions on both sides
We placed post-it tabs on maps of everywhere we Skyped/Hangout-ed with throughout the year.
We put question/challenge on , then posed challenge & link from Twitter https://t.co/LsIJHEnJM8
Q3. What advice do you have for other teachers on starting/joining a global collaborative project?
YES!! Don't settle for "out of sight out of mind"
Mark from Chapel Hill, rolling in a little late ;-)
! Keep trying! it is worth it! Kids love to connect! https://t.co/9bxxxvIHkh
A3: Our first attempt didn't work, but we kept at it, finding better avenues.
Also within our classrooms and schools
Lack of student motivation? Had they done this before?
At my univ I have a variety of options
Sounds great! I plan to research the various options to this is good to know.
As a student myself I am curious to unpack as to why lack of motivation was present? Examples? https://t.co/mnpsTJSORq
A2: Biggest challenge this year was lack of motivation on both sides of the student collab. Many assumptions on both sides
Yes! Zoom is great but costs $ https://t.co/HBjpVSSlAY
We use Zoom which is a web based videoconference platform for national and international connections!
Many Ss in Morocco assumed the US govt was behind the Paris attacks and didn't want to participte, for example
We're doing a mysteryskype with an Australian school that has been going on forever. Email/docs.
Hello ! so happy to see you here! :)
at my univ I have a variety of options
I have been thinking a lot about lack of motivation. I wonder about content & if it is something my students are curious about
- Makes sense to do a team approach! Balance ideas/responsibilities, Encourage! Smart! https://t.co/4dL7sjGYzs
A3: It always has helped me to have a colleague joining in with me! Learning & exploring together!
A3: Partnerships have to be built on trust and connection, not convenience and curriculum. Meet in the middle.
A3: Be open to kids to learning from each other. Not just books or lessons. I notice they learn a lot just by interacting
A3: contact your partner/team school first and establish what you would both like to achieve. Chat and build a plan together.
RT : We put question/challenge on , then posed challenge & link from Twitter https://t.co/lljD5A0Ef9
Q3. What advice do you have for other teachers on starting/joining a global collaborative project?
and what was the project?
Roughly 75% were engaged, but cultural curiosity takes time, esp in my rural, sheltered community
I want to do cross border activities. Working on domestic first. to name a few
A3: Students can create- postcard, letter, story. At we see the more interactive it is, the more meaningful
practice runs = good idea for most things in life :)
A3: I feel like crying! All I´ve done was like "home made", really 3rd World challenging connections, bc this is where I live!
My Ss also loved seeing what the weather was like in other places.
WE love it. Christmas around the world was SO much fun and I read stories to them over google hangout!
Try small doses. Cliffhangers. Teasers. Trailers, etc. Get them curious and then come back to routine?
Blogging about very non-political (as required by school in Morocco) things that interest teens
love that - in the push + pull is where all the interesting conversations happen
Traveling themselves, esp places they partner with. When you see yr partner's circumstances it changes everything.
Yikes! That is a bummer! Would require an entirely different approach after starting w/that! https://t.co/OJNC9DSp2F
Many Ss in Morocco assumed the US govt was behind the Paris attacks and didn't want to participte, for example
Always pose ? Or challenge on Twitter & see what Ts want to join. Activity usually last 1 mo. https://t.co/j20OgoZ6Ie
RT : We put question/challenge on , then posed challenge & link from Twitter https://t.co/lljD5A0Ef9
Q3. What advice do you have for other teachers on starting/joining a global collaborative project?
Q4. What types of projects and tools are best for international collaboration? Short/long? Synchronous/asynchronous? Etc.
Aloha! Melvina from Honolulu, Hawaii. Sorry, joining in late. :)
Absolutely! Excited for this awesome topic!
Yes!! When you see them again, tell them you chatted w a teacher on June 9 who lives in Argentina where it is COLD!
I'm sure you are doing great - you are trying! and you had success with the class in PA!
What about inquiry based projects? Something where they're learning about what's going on and relating to self?
My partner T and I decided that it was important to keep the dialogue going to break down those assumptions
All hands meeting at . Lots to discuss, ! (and left overs ;-)
Just managed to get here myself.
A4 I think any/all tools mentioned, depending on project goals. I have done all of them, sometimes in combination
A4: Consider working up levels of challenge from simple exchange to collaboration to co-creation, which is hardest.
Thank you! It fuels me to keep going despite... Just to experience my Ss excitement!
And w/ us! https://t.co/e17l6i4MsY
I'm sure you are doing great - you are trying! and you had success with the class in PA!
Hey folks I got disconnected for a bit..
A3. iEARN has a great guide on collaborative projects that has general tips for building partnerships https://t.co/9JKoPpJ4eg
A4: Sometimes asynchronous can be a good way to start. This summer art program is one example: https://t.co/ViSFeGVSoZ
A3: pt 1 - Heard JJ Abrams on a podcast on a plane last week - he used a term "Let it stink for a while" -
Thank you for joining us! Glad you could be here! We are on Q4!
A4: I really think is great for this. had great success with it.
A4: docs connected blogs & any project meaningful to both classes.
Yes haha, they will be like ...whattt??? :)))
A4 I think both synchronous/asynchronous platforms offer ongoing opportunities. Thinking about next year & how we begin
What would you use for co-creation? Google Slides?
kids from other countries will think ordinary things we do are extraordinary. Builds a new perspective!
but what's COLD for you, haha.
A3 Jump in. Do something. Don't worry about strict lesson plans. Experience, Energy, Excitement. Learn.
A4 we shared about goods & services which is one of our standards. Ss loved seeing differences and similarities between us
Thanks! Happy to make it in time!
look if forward to using in 2016-2017
A4: I've used google hangout on air, short sessions of 1/2 hour allowing a good, focused dialogue. Record to youtube and embed
is he one of my boys? ;-)
A3: pt 2 meaning, don't rush to fix-take time to understand ineffective part and THEN seek a solution-rushing 2 solve can ruin
Yes! This is a great example!
My 3rd grade Ss are working on an imovie project they started in 2nd gr. Around my trip to Peru last summer.
A4: Multicultural, environmental and historical movements in society. Anything that enables deep thinking
A4 There's value in each. I'm used to short-term, anywhere from 1 time to 1 semester. Each provide great global learning 4 Ss
I gotta learn more about - it seems like everyone is using it! https://t.co/iDsf4eQLfo
A4: I really think is great for this. had great success with it.
Yes!! my buddies from Florida! Love them-you soo much!! It was a miracle! Our own kids connected!
I've participd in a collab Google Slide pres,I also did an asynch co-creation where we worked by mail & backpack :)
A3 Don't be afraid to reach out! Join/ collaborate w/others https://t.co/aFxhImL929
Q3. What advice do you have for other teachers on starting/joining a global collaborative project?
A4: Top tools for me for include
A3: Pt 3- JJ Abrams used a different word. Not suitable for a Longview tweet.
A4: I think a blended approach works best, some live interaction always makes it more exciting for Ss.
well, let´s say 34F?, or 2C 7am, it is COLD here lol
I keep going back and forth on whether to use it or not ... https://t.co/QQpIs2P3pD
I gotta learn more about - it seems like everyone is using it! https://t.co/iDsf4eQLfo
A4: I really think is great for this. had great success with it.
Yes, this is great & works well because it is around a community based need which offers collaboration.
Thats great that you are keeping it going!
Padlet, Google anything, sometimes more about sharing! https://t.co/AsugR8TFVt
What would you use for co-creation? Google Slides?
There are so many options, from Google to and others. Key is creative space where kids can all contribute.
Brrr... that's chilly alright. Sorry!
A4: Customized I think is best! Synchronous/asynchronous. Digital/non-digital. Make learning relevant & personal.
I plan on having them work on it next year too. Have 9K photos & hours of videos to parse.
, Chris Coghlan , , MLB Network , , , , Corey Ray
A4B regardless of type, tool, or time length, keys are having a collaborative plan, cross-cultural empathy& reflection process
A4: I think having both synchronous & asynchronous interactions is a great way to keep momentum.
Of course is a SUPERB platform w lots of resources
A4: I think asynchronous and synchronous both could work out.. Both can provide valuable global connections for Ss.
I think it would be fun to create a story or poem together! Same topic and structure, but see the differences through culture
Use the tools that fit the purpose! I am with you all the way on blended. https://t.co/Ae0Y2Ra7Tu
A4: I think a blended approach works best, some live interaction always makes it more exciting for Ss.
A4. I like to pick a theme or other project to join w partner classroom, then it’s intimate.
Always nervous about the recording permission forms here. So many don't want their Ss photographed
Always nervous about the recording permission forms here. So many don't want their Ss photographed
Oh my! How are you assessing this over such a long time period - and with so much to go through!
Get some great ideas from the teacher & classroom, they have different freedoms & constraints that they get to operate in
A4: Long relationships, but maybe short projects. Have to make sure Ss and Ts feel successful.
Q5. Share an example of an international collaboration project that you like. Why do you like it?
A4: Set up topical Google folders in a common drive to share pics--asynchronous, kids select topics/questions for folders.
Whoa - it's that cold? I'm canceling my plane ticket for July!
I have used edmodo for multiple classroom collaboration
Yes, I agree! https://t.co/myc1wMMnkE
A4: Long relationships, but maybe short projects. Have to make sure Ss and Ts feel successful.
A4 Next year I'm beginning with identity & heritage. Thanks to for their perspective.
it is weird weather for us, not so cold every Winter! This 2016´s killing us!
And feel safe while they are creating and contributing.
RT : Padlet, Google anything, sometimes more about sharing! https://t.co/Y8kuqbWpA5
What would you use for co-creation? Google Slides?
Snail mail is really fun. You can also track how long it takes for things to go back and forth!
Live interaction for a culmination/celebration of learning is fantastic
Thanks for the recommendation. Checking it out.
A4 U know what’s fun? Plan a global Kahoot! game. We will demonstrate this at
One youth led project this past year was "our story book", amazing to see the final products https://t.co/Ni4ser3H7i
Haha! Now! who knows in July! ?
Weather is good! I want my French S's 2 hear w/beautiful sounds from all over Haiti, Canada, France, Morocco etc.
- And lends itself to geography and art applications. https://t.co/617Ga8ZfXp
Snail mail is really fun. You can also track how long it takes for things to go back and forth!
What kinds of projects have you done on edmodo? Another platform I need to learn more about!
Yes, but live can be difficult to do due to time zones. Asynchronous exchange is one solution.
I hear good things about it. Try it.
We did that too, K’s painted fingerprints & it was mailed as a “handshake” too cute! https://t.co/a3JkCgkqhi
Snail mail is really fun. You can also track how long it takes for things to go back and forth!
My Ss used poetry as dialogue, writing poems back & forth in response to each other. Palestine and US. https://t.co/x11RbevdAK
I think it would be fun to create a story or poem together! Same topic and structure, but see the differences through culture
What a great exercise! And what a wonderful way to learn from each other.
I'm hoping for an unusual heat wave in July :) We are going skiing though - so will need cold as well!
Hi friends... stopping by late tonight. How goes it?
We did this too! Great idea! Kids can parody song tunes w/ new words they write together https://t.co/GuhewKdDxZ
My Ss used poetry as dialogue, writing poems back & forth in response to each other. Palestine and US. https://t.co/x11RbevdAK
I think it would be fun to create a story or poem together! Same topic and structure, but see the differences through culture
A5:colleaguedid local beach cleanup collecting a variety of data-T in Indonesia did same. Analyzed and shared concl. Via Skype
A5: Possibly co-authoring something for a good cause together.
Assess? I have a small group working on indep. proj. I have their ?s they asked in 2nd gr. Building from there.
A5 Exploring This way we can crowdsource/connect with others globally about a world problem. https://t.co/XgVtpgnTtX
best questions are the mundane ones: what did you eat today? /what music do you like? Reveals common ground
A4: Yes ! Excited!! Fingers crossed for me! https://t.co/82vlVt5lRL
A4 U know what’s fun? Plan a global Kahoot! game. We will demonstrate this at
the Global Read Aloud, helping a buddy classroom collect box tops for crops also Character education mentors
A5 one from our collab center I like: Aboriginal Cultures Exploration Ss in OZ reaching out to share about culture
Yes and Ss can build meaningful connections through shared , too.
Sounds like a great math activity!
