Love spending my Monday nights with you all! :)
Hi Erica - How’s your spring break going?
Hi Colleen. Nice to have you here for .
Hey Billy! How are you doing??? How’s the little miss?
We just finished chatting abotu with - so fun to keep it going with !
Hello everyone, love happy to be able to join the group today!
Thanks Erica. I had a great birthday yesterday even with all of the rain.
Whoo Hoo! ! Great topic tonight! Heidi from TN…just coming off Spring Break & trying to stay awake :)
Hi Cara - glad you’ll be popping in and out!
Hi Scott! How are you doing this evening??
Hello to my inspiration! :)
Tweeting while on Spring break, NOT looking forward to state testing soon
Had a blast discussing with and - happy to chat more with now!
Q1: How would you describe the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset?
Great, Tamera! Can’t wait to hear some things you share!
Still :( I’m doubly sad. We need to GHO soon.
Little one is great starting to babble and think she is saying daddy. ;)
How was Zootopia? I’m sure they enjoyed it. It must cost a small fortune for y’all to go to the movies. LOL
Feeling good - Report cards are done & ready for our 4th Grade State Fair this week! :)
A1: : “We’ve always done it this way.” : What is another way we could do it?”
Doing well - thank you. Had a wonderful weekend with family!
A1: A fixed mindset asks "Why?" A growth mindset asks "Why not?"
Howdy, Mark. How was your Monday? We are happy you are here for
A1: fixed is Limited by the now, that's all I can do, growth is I have yet to learn and will continue
We are thrilled you are here Clarissa!!! Love learning from you!
Hi Mark. Glad to see you here for .
Have I mentioned how happy I am to be with my peeps ? Anyone going to ISTE?
was literally just about to share this same graphic!
Of course you do!!!!! hahah - What does Jenn think? I need pics!
OMG! I think I need to find a way to get there! I’ll be missing EVERYONE! :(
Oops, I didn’t read the tweet about the movie correctly. LOL
A1 Fixed: intelligence is static vs. Growth: intelligence can be developed. Everything you learn grows your brain.
Hi Heidi! Glad you’re here! Our spring break is 3rd week in April!
A1: Fixed mindset deals with limits. is limitless.
absolutley! Tons of great minds together here tonight!
Ah, there’s our great friend, Jerry, with his page. Thanks, Jerry.
Will send to the group just remind me. Jenn goes say mamama
Hi! We are doing PARCC this year! Lots nervous about it!
We celebrated round 1 of testing with a week break. 4 weeks until more testing.
Q2: Can you unfix a fixed mindset?
It’s nice that it is split up! We’ll be having it a couple days in a row (I think).
Love this graphic. This would be gr8 to discuss in morning meeting w/kids - print out & fix in agendas
A2- I don't think you can change someone elses fixed mindset. They have to be willing, but you can inspire and share to encourage.
We had 4 days in a row…then 5 more at end of April
Hi Mark - Good to see you here! Hope you are having a great start to your week!
A2: Yes! It takes time and persistence. Remember a little theory about the world being flat?!! 😁
A2:Takes time, need to load classroom with growth mindset culture, then have student make the realization. Ask S why did THAT work?
yours too! Im not a fan of big stakes testing
OH MY! That’s brutal then….Poor things know what to expect in April…ugh.
A2: Yes, we as Ts have to make shifts and teach our Ss how to do so as well. Takes a concerted effort.
I like all the graphics tonight. Sharing these help students grasp the differences easier.
A:2 the brain is a muscle that can learn anything with practice. Reflection and awareness are key to know what mindset you are in
A2: I’m living proof that a fixed mindset can be changed to a growth mindset…even the “old dog” can learn new tricks.
A2: of course, teach about metacognition, how the brain works and grows, set by example, learn value of challenge
A2: The optimist in me believes there is always a chance to change a .
Was hoping to chat longer, but bedtime for the little guy. Hope to have more time with the next ! Sorry to slip out so early!
A1: Fixed Mindset - not taking chances - not willing to make mistakes. Growth Mindset - taking chances & learning from mistakes.
I know this “old dog” learns lots of new tricks constantly.
Q3: How do we encourage our Ss to develop a growth mindset?
A2: Unfixing a fixed requires all involved-Teach, Student, and family. A growth culture that permeates throughout the school
Me neither-I feel we have become a society of “test administrators” I want to say “Enough”. Need to look at whole child
Thanks for stopping by Tamara. Understand when the little one needs you.
That's why I took the quote from Mindset & added it to my signature "becoming is better than being"
A:3 develop strong cultures built on relationships and empathy. Help students understand we all bring unique strengths to the room
A3: Facilitate learning that's messy and complex. Appreciate the process more than the product.
A3: Like to share this with Ss,talk about how brain is being BUILT NOW. Beautiful 3-D Brain Scans https://t.co/Vu8pkkidIu
A3: Like to share this with Ss,talk about how brain is being BUILT NOW. Beautiful 3-D Brain Scans https://t.co/Vu8pkkidIu
A2: Each day of the testing week, I played a googleslide show & had a small treat on their desk. https://t.co/avAj949hMz
check out the chat on mindsets.
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR read this post about a man, a woman and a fly who had the COURAGE TO ACT -- https://t.co/uPrJZGJG0h
A2 Helping students see possibilities can help them reconsider their mindset.
A3: sent out a picture of a bulletin board someone shared on pinterest. Ps loved so much, my room mom put it together for us.
A:3 cont... Once structures are in place share mentor texts and reflect often from varied perspectives powerful
Epistemology, the study programs and more into focus.
Love adding the word “yet” to things we can’t do….I don’t know how to do that…YET! Shows growth mindset https://t.co/MR4djUoXgv
A1: fixed is Limited by the now, that's all I can do, growth is I have yet to learn and will continue
A3: focus on improvement, effort, showing what you know and how, allow retakes to promote continued growth, model, ask why a lot
A3: We can encourage with sts by being an example- and have sts encourage each other when something doesn’t work.
A3: I always showed 'sButterfly & stressed personal best & value of feedback
A3: Make the Ss share why learning happened. Not the correct answer but learning. Esp after days of trying. Connect to grit.
A2: I agree - I tend to see life through rose tinted glasses...
A3 Help connect hidden learning to class experience. Ss have no prob failing/trying/trying again a back handspring, but math=tears
Glad to heart that, Erica.
A3 We need to model a growth mindset for our student. And reflect it in our grading procedures.
Q4: Our brains can grow. How do we help our Ss understand and learn this?
Honoring the helps turns tears into triumphs
I like that a growth mindset recognizes ‘getting frustrated’. Diff is “perseverance”! Thx for sharing. https://t.co/uovuR82SFN
your right can't forget the feedback.
A4: We talk about how ipods, tablets go out of date quickly, but our brain is being built,updated,revised--what learning is about.
A:4 we used to use the saying your brain is like a muscle it gets better, stronger, and more resilient w/practice
A4: I like to give examples of things they've personally learned or gotten better at.
You on right on target with this, Scott.
A4: Grow your brain! Even if kids see the mistake you can show how you learn by how you adapt. https://t.co/ORF0xJdz1a
A4: My Ss were shocked to hear that their brains aren't fully developed/adult until about 25 years old. Shocking to a 9 year old.
A4: Bring in examples of ppl that grow and let them share their story. Let Ss interact and ask questions.
Love that you're modeling =
A4: We talk about different parts of the brain frequently and how they relate/connect.
cool analogy! Very relatable for my Ss
A4: 1st project of year is learning/discovering how brain works, like highway system when challenge/learn more roads for travel
Q5: Dweck says Ts should offer more critical feedback and give students opportunities to revise their work. How can we do this?
Mind of I steal this? I need a new bboard:-)
A3:We also need to discourage learned helplessness.Getting help learning is different than being saved.Productive struggle is good.
A5-we try to build culture of not being "done." Just always seeking feedback for "next version" of something.
A5: focusing on projects w/ built in opportunities 4improvement, give ss chance 2become expert, mastery rather than 1 assessment
Yes Yes Yes! I had to stop Ss from rushing to turn in garbage & see value in taking time for revision & quality
A4 What do you know about this topic? After reading, observing, manipulating, and reseaching ,Drain your brain of what you know now.
A:5 teach Ss 2 use inviting language like I notice, something to consider, something I am wondering about is.helps them own feedbk
A5:Honestly depends on the work. Some work is "done" like brownies in the oven, but better learning from things you can be proud of.
A5: Being able to add comments to a Ss writing in GDocs is so useful. Ss can easily revise their writing within the doc.
A5: I think offering more “specific” feedback, rather than critical would be helpful. And letting them know there are options.
Two weeks ago we opened Ireland's first ever Primary School STEAMroom. Not a book in sight .Causing huge interest
hits this w/ his thoughts on creating learning that isn't like brownies
A:5 cont..Once students are comfort and natural with stems they give and receive feedback from each other in all contexts
Great idea to reuse the speech bubbles! :) https://t.co/ELf6zH2wip
I am pretty sure I got it from someone else :) laminated thought and speech bubbles we use for other things
A5: The voice option for comments in make giving specific feedback a breeze.
discussing it now my friend!
. A5: We feel stress of "covering" material.Doing less but more in depth would offer time 2 give more critical feedback.
A5: I never want to hear “I’m done”. There is always more to do, read, explore, create. Now Ss even say it to each other.
I'd love to see standard based report cards have two grades... Yes and not yet
Love the “Drain your Brain”
Lit Circles were great way for Ss to discuss & offer feedback of their products I let them co-revise before I ever saw it
Wow, you could write a whole essay about the symbolism here.
Questioning sure encourages them to have a growth mindset.
Hooray! It’s Mrs. Murch! Glad to have you here for
that sounds fun! I bet the S's are crazy about the opportunities!
is another great option for Ss to leave each other feedback
Q6: What kind of feedback is best for encouraging a growth mindset in our Ss?
Seriously - hadn’t really thought about it - but it’s good. I think this was shared from https://t.co/96C8mPYGz0
Wow, you could write a whole essay about the symbolism here.
I love when they ask how long does it need to be? Favorite response what do you think? https://t.co/CVtmJ8a89I
A5: I never want to hear “I’m done”. There is always more to do, read, explore, create. Now Ss even say it to each other.
I agree what a great app to use in the classroom.
That would be very interesting! Love it! https://t.co/A0NtvQN6vc
I'd love to see standard based report cards have two grades... Yes and not yet
Reminds me of Dan Siegel's work. Do you know it? Great neuroscientist working on how emotions affect the brian
. A5: I agree. I find myself able to write more, and more quickly, too, when using GDocs in Google Classroom.
A5: Ss explaining helps with the "done" If we want Ss expl, audience needs to be larger than the T-other Ss. Learning strat shared.
A:6 after establishing a strong culture, any inviting language that Ss can build on is best/preferred
Not familiar - but I’ll be sure to check into it! Thx for sharing. https://t.co/l57QOWYn2q
Reminds me of Dan Siegel's work. Do you know it? Great neuroscientist working on how emotions affect the brian
A6: feedback should highlight growth and areas to set goals, short term and long term, specific and include SS in self eval
LUV Dweck's work. Do U know Dan Siegel's work ? Neuroscientist and psychologist working on how emotions affect brain
Colonel Sanders didn't start frying chicken 'til he was 65 years old. It's never too late.
A6: "telling children that they’re smart and implying that their success depends on it fosters fixed mindsets”
A5: 1:1 conferencing is really beneficial. I think GDocs has been a game changer for providing feedback.
A6: Ts can coach a student to try different approaches to working, studying, and learning, so that (s)he is thinking more deeply.
exactly! I tell my students, you will try bc you are smart and you will get this, and maybe not today but you will !
Finding that larger audience can be difficult, but it’s a real motivator for sure. https://t.co/LOHkeZGFhL
A5: Ss explaining helps with the "done" If we want Ss expl, audience needs to be larger than the T-other Ss. Learning strat shared.
I don’t even know what it was, but I am jealous!! Glad you are here!
I use it when I notice a student comes to school upset, before a test, to see if I should give the test, etc...
No, but I will check it out. Thanks for sharing.
A5: I signed up for the kaizena app for voice feedback, but haven't used it yet. Does anyone else use it?
also has a video option, my kiddos record their learning and assessment using selfie videos
UR welcome. Nice to have science proving what we all know - kids who are happy, healthy & supported learn better :-)
A5: School is often like TV mysteries, all done in 30 minutes. We have to be honest about how long mastery truly takes in life.
A6: cultivating growth mindsets involv. a gradual process of releasing respons. to Ss so them become more self-sufficient learners
Q7: What is grit? How does it relate to a growth mindset?
A5cont.Good for Ts to share stories about their own growth mind, prod struggles in learning. It's not quick if it's interesting.
I agree!! Authentic audience right at our fingertips https://t.co/ZfCb8ITrUB
Tech has blown down the walls of finding audiences. I laugh at the "published" stage of writing process as Ss hand work to T
UR welcome. Nice 2 have science reinforce what we know. Ss who feel safe, seen & know mistakes are natural learn better.
I just got it in full swing last week!
I love to start the year with this & show it a couple of times throughout the year.
I share stories like this all the time with my Ss.
A7: Grit is that space between "I know" and "I have no idea." The thicker/messier that space is the more learning that occurs.
Could you hear me chuckle out loud on this one! :) https://t.co/DK1a4F6Dp0
Colonel Sanders didn't start frying chicken 'til he was 65 years old. It's never too late.
I wondered who was laughing! Should've figured it was you :-)
A:7 Grit sure seems to have many different takes on its meaning.feel like it gets jumbled with resilience the ability to sustain
A6: Starting with a self-reflection & ask Ss where they think they could improve & give feedback/instruction from there.
A5 Before teacher feedback peer feedback and discussion. Teacher feedback & questions to ponder helps students dig deeper
A7 Grit is the ability to continue even when you are struggling/failing. We call it perseverance!
I bet it would be good to show/discuss before out state tests coming up in a couple of weeks.
Yes! RT : A6: Starting w/ a self-reflection & ask Ss where they think they could improve & give feedback/instruction
This=crucial. Ss must be helped 2 know own hearts & minds not fed answers and data. Need 2 find what makes each unique
A7: Grit (Perseverance) is important but I tell my Ss that Grit alone is not enough, learn strategies/techniques/algorithms too
A7: We talked in my class that if a S became a doctor and was helping a grandma, you'd want them to have grit if gma wasn't well.
Q8: Do you share with your Ss famous celebrity who were at first failures? Who do you share?
Words=powerful reflection of mindset. Change them & change focus & change yr world. Why SEL & self-reflective writing vital
Yes! It's lovely. No reason Ss can't know how works & be empowered 2 change their own thoughts 2 positive.
Thanks for some great shares tonight time for report card comments :) Enjoy your evening!
Thank you too! Have a great night!
Absolutely - I think they like learning about how their brain works. https://t.co/NUOp8LXy5H
Yes! It's lovely. No reason Ss can't know how works & be empowered 2 change their own thoughts 2 positive.
A8: I enjoyed reading ’s Outlier and learning about the 10,000 hour road to success.
Use it routinely in the Not Perfect Hat Club programs. SO important 2 know NO ONE perfect but each unique w/gifts 2 share
It is absolutely a great visual - especially when they see it first ‘hand’ (couldn’t resist the pun). https://t.co/udE7K4u6Lp
Started using my hands to make more tangible for my K kiddos.
Q9: Have you taught your students to “power of yet”? (A few have already touched on this.)
I share the video and I have the poster in my classroom!
be sure to check out for great discussions! Tonight was
Okay - Ss are writing Persuasive arguments this week - will publish in ! I’m determined! https://t.co/xivxzM4UWU
So true!! Every stage can be "published" when writing in to make SS thinking come alive
A9: I haven’t phrased it as the “Power of Yet.” Yet!
LOVE that. First heard from then saw videos by Dweck. What a wonderful way to keep Ss inspired & hopeful.
A9: I’m RTing this now because I’d love to see this on all report cards and progress reports. https://t.co/TkXDGYvplQ
I'd love to see standard based report cards have two grades... Yes and not yet
Do tell how you managed that???? Please get me going on this! :)
A:8 my fav celebrities 4 our Ss has been authors. Ss are so unaware at how long it takes to publish a book
another book is called Making a Splash
Also, Ss created goals based on reflection - which part did they need the most work on. We update/review progress.
Yes=summative success. Not yet=formative. https://t.co/esJm016C0C
A9: I’m RTing this now because I’d love to see this on all report cards and progress reports. https://t.co/TkXDGYvplQ
I'd love to see standard based report cards have two grades... Yes and not yet
A8: we are lucky to have local author who brings in her drafts to show Ss how many tries before published
Tee hee! (I’m so far behind in this chat it’s unbelievable.)
Put the students in the roster, print the QRcode, hand an iPad to a kiddo and watch it roll! Really
wish our district would see formatives that way our gradebook requires grades 40% formative 60% summative
That’s the idea - having the students dig deeper! I think I’ll use that term with them from now on. https://t.co/sg5hQFHgw2
A5 Before teacher feedback peer feedback and discussion. Teacher feedback & questions to ponder helps students dig deeper
I just ordered that as I was preparing for the this week.
Also on student feedback sheets (point sheets-despise that label) yes and needs practice rather than no https://t.co/JIR5dm7Jsf
A9: I’m RTing this now because I’d love to see this on all report cards and progress reports. https://t.co/TkXDGYvplQ
I'd love to see standard based report cards have two grades... Yes and not yet
Yes - a nice gentle reminder.
I'm at the game. That's a growth mindset! Lol
