Host #sstlap#eduwin of the week -seeing students recording themselves playing their instruments sharing on Google Classroom - great formative assessment
#sstlap Albert from SC / K12 Coordinator / all subjects really, but mostly a World History fan! #eduWin - seeing some really innovative and engaging social studies in my districts elementary schools!
Hey #sstlap, I'm Dwight from the beautiful Adirondack Mountains in New York State where I teach 7th grade social studies. My #eduwin of the week has got to be finding the Timeline Diagram feature on Google Slides! I made a tutorial: https://t.co/zs4crmtx4M
Laura, kindergarten teacher in MN!! My #eduwin for the week was seeing 1 of my students make huge growth on an assessment, going from writing only beginning sounds to now being able to write whole words!!! #sstlap
glad to hear it. I recently read Daniel Pink's book Drive and wrote a reflection about it. Flow was one of the main ideas that stuck with me, so here we are a whole chat about it #sstlap
Hello! Raquel K-12 Tech integrator from Green Bay WI.
my #eduwin just went in to see that a 2nd grader is logging into padlet at home to leave great comments on her classmates animal presentations. Not required choosing to!
#sstlap
A1) Probably in having conversations with my children about . . . anything. I especially love hearing their thoughts on current events, what they are excited to be learning about (at school or on their own), etc. #sstlap
A1: Flow for me is found trail running. I'm fully in the moment, my eyes looking ahead, my feet placed perfectly on rocks between roots, etc. I have to be fully there or fall flat on my face. I also have been finding flow recently editing videos. #sstlap
Spending time with my wife and children traveling, going to the movies, hanging out #sstlap I’m also in flow-mode at the piano or watching funny YouTube videos that make us all crack up :-)

She’s one of those intervention cases, that we stepped in, gave her lots of extra support and she’s basically caught up now! Makes me so happy 😍 #sstlap

A1 Reading and Sports. Making a much bigger push this 2018 year to read. Already have 15 books completed with a couple in progress. And sports are practically half my life
#sstlap
A2: I’m finding flow in teaching with “guest speaker” days where I dress up, transforming my room, incorporating different things like legos and oreos, trying new things. I’m just having fun this year. #sstlap
#sstlap I love seeing our Ss doing really tough but authentic work! NHD, for example, is super cool! I love sitting down with Ts and sharing ideas reciprocally and planning deep and meaningful learning experiences. I love talking to kids about their learning!!! ❤️
Q2: In my field experiences, being able to connect with students and have genuine conversations with them was really great. When I tutor kids and they master a particularly difficult topic, sharing that triumphant feeling with them is the most rewarding #sstlap
A2) Since I teach online and asynchronously, I don't get to see those "aha" moments except through their work. Seeing students make improvements and ask questions makes me happy! #sstlap
A2: Flow when teaching comes when helping students help each other to connect the dots during discussions. That lightbulb moment is really apparent with some of my students this year and it never gets old seeing the joy when that connection is made. #sstlap
A2 Seeing the teachers make the connections. When they realize that "old" dogs CAN learn new tricks and when they pull it into their classrooms to engage their students
#sstlap
A1 doing things that allow me to create, have a sense of satisfaction completing a task. Trying something new that is sometimes a struggle and eventually achieving.
Hanging with the family like tonight the kids and I did a workout. #sstlap
#sstlap A2 #flow When S's work on projects that are intrinsically motivating and are able to relate content to their life. When S's understand that they create and change the world around them. When learning is student centered. When S's grapple and debate. When S's create
YES! that is what is supposed to happen, but often doesn't, so we need to celebrate when we are able to get a student to achieve success!! congrats #sstlap
A3 Confusing my passions with those of my students - meaning the times I assumed that because I was passionate about something, they would be too. #sstlap
#sstlap A2 Being able to bring the world to our students! I have been fortunate to make connections with guest speakers and classes to interact with our students. Global collaboration is something our Ss will always remember!
A2 working with teachers and students and seeing the excitement when they are able to try something new - when they see the results of their taking a risk #sstlap

I hope you remember those moments when you have your own class and prioritize your planning to allow for those moments- it is too easy to get caught up in curriculum, content, testing and the stress -
don't forget what matters and brings you Flow #sstlap
Q2: In my field experiences, being able to connect with students and have genuine conversations with them was really great. When I tutor kids and they master a particularly difficult topic, sharing that triumphant feeling with them is the most rewarding #sstlap
A3 Barriers to my flow - negativity, stagnancy, fixed mindset, unwillingness to collaborate, set my expectations too high, other priorities put before social studies - but we’ve got to focus on what we can do to overcome the hurdles. #sstlap
A3: Not getting enough sleep is actually a real kicker for me (happens way too often). Also generally not feeling like I'm balancing everything well #sstlap

#sstlap A3 Obstacles to #flow could be FUD- Fear uncertainty and doubt. Sometimes mixed w- a lack of confidence. I aim to eliminate the FUD in my classroom by being an effective facilitator.
oh yes- when the veteran teachers challenge themselves to learn something new is awesome.
We want ss to be life long learners- frustrating when teachers close to retirement refuse to do new things,
so I get excited to work with those who still take risks-- #sstlap
A2 Seeing the teachers make the connections. When they realize that "old" dogs CAN learn new tricks and when they pull it into their classrooms to engage their students
#sstlap
definitely- when kids do things and there is no connection to grade or points, but because they want to do it and do it well is what I wish I could create with every task/activity, unit, etc.
#sstlap

R4) Have set up my world history course so Ss choose a historical theme or essential question (depending on semester) that speaks to them & use that as their lens through which to view history & work to create their final capstone projects. #sstlap
#sstlap A4 The goal is to seek to learn alongside S's daily. Model what #flow looks like and promote positive energy. Seek to create a student centered environment where S's are having fun learning, thinking, creating
A4: stop comparing myself to my colleagues! Especially as we’ve been discussing data, I’ve felt bad that most of their kids know almost all their sight words & I only had 3 close, but when I look at my Ss growth, it’s huge!! #sstlap
A4 While those moments of zen are amazing. They don't just happen. Preparation goes a long way for keeping you in the flow. Planning and preparation are as much about being present while preparing while also allowing yourself to be present in the future. #sstlap
A4: #sstlap surround myself with positive people - get into schools and see the great work our Ts are doing every day - follow excellent educators on social media and get ideas💡- also like listening to @Flocabulary videos (pun intended) 😀
A3 Time, Stress, doubt, checking email -
Allowing myself to be distracted or focusing on things that aren't important take me away from the things that are awesome and bring me joy #sstlap
A4: For me, sometimes just taking a few moments to settle down and remember that I love what I'm learning and doing (and think about the good things) is enough to make my mindset do a 180 #sstlap

oh yeah good point- I know I have done that at times, especially when trying to make connections with content and using sports, then realizing not everyone is a fan.
#sstlap
A3 Confusing my passions with those of my students - meaning the times I assumed that because I was passionate about something, they would be too. #sstlap
yes- and sometimes when you are working and you check - why why don't do it.. nothing good comes from it. you interrupted something good by clicking gmail and then flow died #sstlap
A3: time - never seems to be enough! And I’ve learned the pain of a too-flexible schedule in Grad school. Feels like I’ve been held hostage because it has changed every week. #lessonlearned#sstlap
I have always struggled with the balance- I coached 2 and 3 sports, taught, then started a family- wanted to be best teacher- can't do everything at A+ level, so have to find balance it is difficult but being conscious of it is the first step #sstlap
A3: Not getting enough sleep is actually a real kicker for me (happens way too often). Also generally not feeling like I'm balancing everything well #sstlap
A5: for some, but not all. Many appreciate chunking lessons. The few I know were intentional to subvert trouble with playing to their strengths. #sstlap
A5: I’ve asked Ss what they like & have found books on those subjects to read. They love it!! We also share most mornings so they can talk about things they’ve done or like #sstlap
A5) When I was teaching in a traditional classroom setting, I learned a lot by chatting with Ss as they came in, asking them about their activities, etc. #sstlap
i so struggle with time- and how some weeks are crazy the next week you get a breathe then crazy and soul crushing then.. yeah. the struggle is real #sstlap
A5: Those moments when students are totally locked in to what they're doing. Though sometimes though are missed with the behavioral whack-a-mole that sometimes rears its head when it's time to work. #sstlap
A5 field studies, experts, authentic and real work that’s on public display - they work really hard when it’s REAL. #sstlap they love collaborating, debating, acting, moving, grappling and playing / not much flow happening during a long, drawn out teacher-talk only lecture. 😴
yes scheduling things is vital for me-
I had to do that with exercise. I am not perfect, not even close to being super consistent, but have been better when I plan it out #sstlap
A5 #sstlap Knowing what S's passions are is the key to helping them enter into #flow in class. Giving them plenty of time to discover and reflect on the things they care about. Not making it always about covering content, but about creating a better world.
oh yeah good point- I know I have done that at times, especially when trying to make connections with content and using sports, then realizing not everyone is a fan.

A5 get to know them & their families, ask them about their dreams & needs. I teach K, so I also make it a point to ask their Ps about their dreams for the Ss too. Then, connect content to these dreams, needs, & lived experience making learning purposeful & meaningful #sstlap
A5: all it takes is a minute to sit down and have a conversation. I try to ask every student how they are doing, and have at least 1-2 conversations with them before they leave my room. It’s not perfect, but I’m trying to make “small deposits” for bigger returns. #sstlap
A5: One of the things my professors talk about frequently is making a point to attend extracurricular events and to get to know what activities kids are involved with so you can ask about how they're doing #sstlap

Social Studies Teach Like A Pirate. How to implement the ideas @burgessdave wrote about in his book, Teach Like a Pirate in the social studies classroom. #sstlap
when I did #geniushour I was able to get to know students in a new way- they shared their interests -
helped me see the power of taking a break from content and spending time connecting with students - talking sharing - build relationships #sstlap
A6: figure out their passions and try to find ways to tap into it. I had a student today researching the steam engine because I know he loves building cars. I have never heard him speak so passionately about a history topic. @#sstlap
A6: Student Choice! The important thing is being able to show me you know learned what we were hoping you'd learn. How you'd like to show me that is up to you. Take a pick from this menu of choices. #sstlap
Stands for Social Studies Teach Like a Pirate. Based on the concepts from. @burgessdave’s book Teach Like A Pirate. You should join us - we love adding new folks! #sstlap
A6: I try to make sure to incorporate their interest in our centers. I have a group that loves to build, art, cars, & barbies so I try to keep toys of that theme available. I also bring in books & videos with things they enjoy #sstlap
A6 - voice and choice are crucial as are keeping it fresh and relevant - music 🎶 is a great gateway to get the kids hooked in my experience. Build a relationship - ridge their out of school “flow” with their interest in the classroom! #sstlap
#sstlap A6 We have created cultural conversations for our Ss. Our sociology class visited with a class from Argentina 🇦🇷 to discuss gender inequality. Also we visited with a class from Monterrey Mexico 🇲🇽 to discuss current issues affecting both countries.

#sstlap A6 letting S's learn at their own pace. Sometimes you need to go slow to be in #flow A3 another obstacle of flow can be rushing or moving too fast for S's to be able to grapple w- complex topics.
Every time I struggle with the time that it takes to prepare for this weekly chat, and have a couple weeks of slow flow, we get weeks like this where you guys are awesome, inspiring and keep me going #sstlap
A7 be bold and courageous with lessons and in our education circles, lead by example, and share out to the world what amazing things we are doing and the positive ways our Ss are responding #sstlap
agree and wish we could get rid of the old school grading system.
create real tasks that are multi-discipline and students will knock it out of the park and grades will be irrelevant
