T2 Teaching empathy starts as early as when we are health care courses in college. It must be a foundation of education in those interested in health care and health sciences #hcldr
IMO, civic engagement means being aware of the politics (i.e. power structures) around you. #HipHopEd boosts civil engagement by shining a truthful light on these systems & how they work (or don't).
Discuss how respect (power) is distributed in the community and who makes those decisions. Is the system fair? What would happen if you challenge it? #HipHopEd

#Hiphoped This brings to fore issue of ACCOUNTABILITY & CONSEQUENCES. How do the SYSTEMIC/cultural/economic/legal/constitutional environment EMPOWER citizens to hold leaders accountable? How can these factors be improved upon?
This week, Ss picked a school policy they had beef with (cell phones, dress code, etc), and they had to apply MLK's 4 steps of a nonviolent campaign (define the injustice, negotiate, self-purify, action) to how they could address the issue. #HipHopEd

Even before "civic action," necessary to guide Ss to craft HH principles on which to build actions outside classroom, to help them establish how & why solidarity is the glue #hiphoped
Have students analyze political rhetoric in English research issues beyond talk. Recognize Hip Hop as news of the streets beyond empty words. #HipHopEd
At the moment, everything was just up for discussion. Might expand the lesson down the line. "Self-purify" for that was them coming to terms w/ what unpleasant reactions to their actions might look like. Them realizing how complex & organized effective action really is. #HipHopEd
Perhaps, it comes down to how society is organized politically, how much awareness do citizens have of these systems/structures, how do you increase informed participation by citizens and whittle down power of economic blocs/special interest groups with selfish agendas? #HipHoped
I find my 3rd graders most engaged when unpacking race, power & privilege, esp given the political and social landscape of our world. They love HH. They are future change makers #hiphoped
