  • ManionJulie - Moderator Nov 6 @ 11:34 PM EST
Hello! Julie from Bend ready to learn about Math #OrEdChat
  • jkjohnsonbell Nov 6 @ 11:34 PM EST
Jennifer, Math Coach from Oregon City. Looking forward to #OrEdChat on productive math discourse!
  • petrickkel Nov 6 @ 11:34 PM EST
Q1: How do you define productive math discourse? #OrEdChat
  • MViTDiTeach Nov 6 @ 11:35 PM EST
Going to miss tonight's chat. See you all next week! #OrEdChat
  • jkjohnsonbell Nov 6 @ 11:35 PM EST
A1:Productive math discourse is conversations btwnSs that clarify ideas about math. Unproductive would be off topic or frustrated. #OrEdChat
  • ManionJulie - Moderator Nov 6 @ 11:36 PM EST
A1 When students are explain math to other students who then respond. #OrEdChat
  • jkjohnsonbell Nov 6 @ 11:36 PM EST
BTW, I think discourse is important in all subjects, but we are working to increase it in math. #OrEdChat
  • hmarrs24 - Moderator Nov 6 @ 11:36 PM EST
A1: Giving students the opportunity to be problem solvers, explorers, teachers, learners, etc. Stay on topic and engaged #OrEdChat
  • jkjohnsonbell Nov 6 @ 11:37 PM EST
Yes! Historically, lots of this went through the Teacher. Trying to improve it between students now. #OrEdChat
    In reply to @ManionJulie
  • jkjohnsonbell Nov 6 @ 11:38 PM EST
Yes! Exploration is a big part of math (and science!) and is necessary for learning. #OrEdChat

We will miss you this week @MViTDiTeach #OrEdChat

Welcome @ManionJulie! I'm excited to learn tonight too! #OrEdChat

  • jkjohnsonbell Nov 6 @ 11:39 PM EST
Exactly. That's why explicitly discussing Productive MATH discourse is important. (nice to see you here!) #OrEdChat
    In reply to @welblair
  • KatieJMcNamara Nov 6 @ 11:39 PM EST
A1 productive math convo explains reasoning...regardless of correct solution #OrEdChat
  • petrickkel Nov 6 @ 11:40 PM EST
Q2: Since we are defining productive math discourse as between Ss, what strategies do you find most effective to do this? #OrEdChat
  • hmarrs24 - Moderator Nov 6 @ 11:40 PM EST
    Hey @KatieJMcNamara! #OrEdChat
    In reply to @KatieJMcNamara
  • jkjohnsonbell Nov 6 @ 11:40 PM EST
    A2: #OrEdChat
  • hmarrs24 - Moderator Nov 6 @ 11:41 PM EST
A2: Biggest piece for me: teaching how to have those convos then allowing TIME for the convos to happen! #OrEdChat
    • petrickkel Nov 6 @ 11:40 PM EST
Q2: Since we are defining productive math discourse as between Ss, what strategies do you find most effective to do this? #OrEdChat
  • jkjohnsonbell Nov 6 @ 11:41 PM EST
A2: Modeling and practicing discourse help students see and hear what it should be. Sentence Frames/Starters and clear roles help. #OrEdChat
  • jkjohnsonbell Nov 6 @ 11:42 PM EST
And Trusting students to keep them productive... Allowing TIME for processing is so hard with pacing guides, bells... #OrEdChat
    In reply to @hmarrs24
  • hmarrs24 - Moderator Nov 6 @ 11:42 PM EST
Modeling and practicing! Definitely important! Ss don't get enough prac. disagreeing in the appropriate way #OrEdChat
    In reply to @jkjohnsonbell
  • welblair Nov 6 @ 11:43 PM EST
It's important to modeling what listening looks & sounds like. Most students just know how to listen to respond. #OrEdChat
    In reply to @jkjohnsonbell
  • jkjohnsonbell Nov 6 @ 11:43 PM EST
Yes - we talk in my math classes about how to "respectfully disagree." Might be important for our country on Wed... #OrEdChat
    In reply to @hmarrs24
  • jkjohnsonbell Nov 6 @ 11:44 PM EST
    Adults, too. #OrEdChat
    In reply to @welblair
  • petrickkel Nov 6 @ 11:44 PM EST
Q3: How could these math games increase prod math discourse? What other games do you suggest? #OrEdChat
  • hmarrs24 - Moderator Nov 6 @ 11:44 PM EST
True! #OrEdChat I also emphasize having a reason for disagreeing...not just disagreeing to disagree :)
    • jkjohnsonbell Nov 6 @ 11:43 PM EST
Yes - we talk in my math classes about how to "respectfully disagree." Might be important for our country on Wed... #OrEdChat

A3: Conversations about strategy during games can help Ss see patterns and math structures. Also love Blokus, Rush Hour, Tangoes #OrEdChat
  • hmarrs24 - Moderator Nov 6 @ 11:46 PM EST
A3: I LOVE using games in Math! They increase collab. and discussion surrounding math. I like Farkle and math card games #OrEdChat
  • welblair Nov 6 @ 11:47 PM EST
A3: My students have had great conversations while playing Set #OrEdChat
  • jkjohnsonbell Nov 6 @ 11:48 PM EST
Have you seen the card games at https://t.co/fRDSpoQZXb ? Lots of great ideas for fluency and place value practice. #OrEdChat

Q4: Should prod math discourse ever be assessed? Why or why not? #OrEdChat
  • ManionJulie - Moderator Nov 6 @ 11:50 PM EST
A3. My firsties share an ipad for moose math, slate math, king of math, conversations as one drives and the other navigates. #OrEdChat
  • jkjohnsonbell Nov 6 @ 11:52 PM EST
A4: I think mathematical communication can be assessed, but discourse between students is for processing and learning, not grades. #OrEdChat
  • hmarrs24 - Moderator Nov 6 @ 11:52 PM EST
A4: Formative assess by Ts in order inform instruction but a summative assess wouldn't be appropriate during discourse #OrEdChat
  • jkjohnsonbell Nov 6 @ 11:52 PM EST
A4: Rubrics on math discourse for the purposes of self-assessment and reflection could be helpful for improving discourse. #OrEdChat
  • welblair Nov 6 @ 11:52 PM EST
Great resource! Thanks for sharing. #OrEdChat

Anyone from #OrEdChat going to #NSTA16 in Portland this week? I'd love to meet IRL. :)
  • ManionJulie - Moderator Nov 6 @ 11:54 PM EST
A4, I agree with Jennifer. But asking them to build a conversation tower on a math topic would easily assess discourse skill #OrEdChat
  • hmarrs24 - Moderator Nov 6 @ 11:55 PM EST
No :( I live too far away...I'll be at AcceleratEd and NCCE 2017 in Portland in a few months! #OrEdChat

  • petrickkel Nov 6 @ 11:55 PM EST
Q5: LAST question! How does prod math discourse prepare Ss for higher wage, higher demand careers? #OrEdChat
  • jkjohnsonbell Nov 6 @ 11:55 PM EST
Maybe a tweet up then? #OrEdChat
    In reply to @hmarrs24
  • jkjohnsonbell Nov 6 @ 11:56 PM EST
A5: Communication is so important in the work place. That's what employers want. We don't need more robots. #OrEdChat
  • hmarrs24 - Moderator Nov 6 @ 11:58 PM EST
