Ryan, 8th Grade US History (19th Century) from Olathe, KS. I’m inspired by helping Ss unlock their creativity & imagination with content & skills. #XPLAP
Kellie from Virginia Beach, VA- 4th grade- My motivation for teaching- inspiriting students to succeed- It's like a logic problem that constantly changes! #xplap
Amanda Glover, taking over Legends of Learning tonight as a teacher consult. I teach 4th grade math/science but also play the role as the Tech Coach at school. I love integrating purposeful, enriching tech and Ss liking to learn and making their own connections is my why! #xplap

Love this question on #XPLAP… What motivates me to teach… Making my students the best versions of themselves they can be… Also, helping them discover things they didn’t know before.
Hi Mr. Panda, I'm Scott from the Chicago Suburbs. I love seeing students excited about learning! #Gamification does exactly that! What an awesome community! #XPLAP
Q1 is here! Promoting intrinsic motivation is hard but it sure is rewarding. How do you promote intrinsic motivation within your classes and games? #XPLAP
Hi #XPLAP folks! Jocelyn here, from Toronto Canada, where I used to teach Music, but am now a Tech Coach for my school board. I get to teach teachers now! And those "aha!" moments and a student's joy in success motivates me!
Hi everyone! DianaLyn from Texas where I teach MS science. I love teaching because it is fun to watch the Ls make connections and discoveries they hadn't thought of before. #XPLAP
A1: patience, reflection, repeat! Building the mindset to be intrinsically motivated is not innate for every student, and some are not taught at home. LOTS of reflective guidance and conversations relating to what their goals are helps! #xplap
Q1 is here! Promoting intrinsic motivation is hard but it sure is rewarding. How do you promote intrinsic motivation within your classes and games? #XPLAP
A1 - I am very happy that we are discussing this tonight, as I struggle with this at times. Intrinsic motivation involves a culture of risk taking and belonging, and everyone needs to be on board! #XPLAP
Q1 is here! Promoting intrinsic motivation is hard but it sure is rewarding. How do you promote intrinsic motivation within your classes and games? #XPLAP
A1: As a Music teacher, the more performance opportunities I could give my kids, the better... the more they felt their OWN pride in performing well, the more they were motivated to improve and showcase their efforts! #XPLAP
A1: We check the leaderboard weekly & celebrate those who level up & earn items/badges. In class we talk regularly about always doing your best, avoiding Qs like “How many points is this worth?” Or “How many sentences/pages do I have to write?” #XPLAP
A1: Students in a #gamified classroom can always be pushed by intrinsic motivations as they have full agency over their player in the game. It is all about their choices and their discoveries about their own hidden interests and talents. #XPLAP
A1 By giving choice!! I hope they will explore topics they are interested in, but would probably be something we won't get to do or learn about in class #xplap
A1 I try to hit the RAMP motivators (Relatedness, Autonomy, Mastery, Purpose) in planning. Also consider the 'player type' models (I like @daverage Hexad) #xplap
A1: Creating immersive and challenging experiences that give opp to create, collaborate, critically think empowers students in unbelievable ways. Learning becomes magical. #xplap
A1 I think as I celebrate the journey each learner makes they too get to find the joy of discovery and look forward to the next adventure/ learning event. #XPLAP
A1: Creating immersive and challenging experiences that give opp to create, collaborate, critically think empowers students in unbelievable ways. Learning becomes magical. #xplap
A1- by giving choice and allowing students to help for our games- Ss provide feedback about our activities and games and make suggestions- They love to see their ideas come to life! #xplap
Thanks Ivan… I really want to show the world #Gamification isn’t just stickers… It is about experiences… We would never reduce the boy scouts to just badges… #XPLAP
In the grand scheme of edu, we are just on the brink of researching and discovering the true potentials of #gamification in education. Such exciting time!! #xplap
A1 I love to wrap my students into a storyline and pull them into a location! They become more than students and they strive to met our class mission! #xplap
Q2 - The most wonderful thing that can happen in a game is extrinsic motivation turning into intrinsic motivation. The reward doesn't matter anymore, you just want to be better! Have you witnessed this? #XPLAP
Awesome @mrhagedorn so excited to have a look. I am glad you have a channel and are sharing it with others. It is a powerful way to connect and grow as an educator. Also thanks for listening to #WellPlayed#XPLAP
In science, purpose makes such a difference. Just finished an activity where Ss explored how science could improve their school. I was blown away by how much they enjoyed the project. #XPLAP
I agree with the 'choice' comments. That is the basis of Autonomy in the RAMPs. Trick though is to offer a meaningful choice - 2 paths to the slaughterhouse isn't really a choice for the cow... #xplap
How do you do that? I am interested in #Gamification but worry about replacing extrinsic grades with other extrinsic carrot and sticks motivation #XPLAP

A2: A lot, Many students are excited by the game, want to earn some power up, they go on a quest, love the quest and are forever changed.. One girl, said she now wants to go to school for graphics design due to some quests… #Gamification opens doors & changes lives. #XPLAP style
A2: For some of my Ss, yes. A few have asked me after receiving feedback: “Can I redo this?” I’m starting to ask them “Why?” hoping they’ll tell me “because I think I can do better.” Haven’t reached that point yet, but we’re getting closer. #XPLAP

A2 I have seen students buy in by completing a quest that seems "easy" to get them some game points. Later they take on a quest you can see their passion take over and they end up spending way more time to create something awesome! #xplap
Yes! When students have transitioned their focus from becoming the “legendary learner” and wearing the cape, or getting smarties for being a “smarty” to wanting a few more points to be “ahead” or asking for extra pts =Teacher win #xplap

A2: Yes! Offered "volunteer hours" (Ont. kids need 40hrs to graduate) to Sr. students if they helped with Gr9 Band "Meet-&-Greet" PlayDay the first year we ran one. Then the Srs. so enjoyed getting to know the Gr9s, that I never had to offer hours any other year! #XPLAP
I don’t think of #Gamification as carrot and stick… I see it is an immersive experience that we give our students in which school and their learning has much more context and power to relate to something. #XPLAP

A2- I watch it as my Ss excitedly wait to log into a Hangout w/me each night to review/study vocab & math. They don't do it for prizes (no prizes) but because they are as competitive as their teacher! It started with a handful of kids and has grown leaps and bounds! #xplap
A2: Students love to earn chance cards and badges, but the power comes in how immersed they become in the learning. They make learning their own. They dive deep into the content, exploring, creating & collaborating becoming passionate learners. #xplap
Yes @MrHExperience I love how quests allow choice and personalization of your course to each student. It has been the most natural of differentiation I have ever seen. #XPLAP

A2 I'm having a hard time thinking of an example. I try to design experiences that flow in between both external and internal. Also varied types so students with different motives have something to shoot for. #xplap
I often find myself planning side quests with indiv Ss in mind. Play to their strengths as learners, just as the game celebrates strengths and abilities of their avatar. #XPLAP

I really like how open the quests are. When Ss ask me for specific instructions I get to ask, "What would you like to do? or, "What do you think would showcase what you learned the best?" They look at me a bit and then head off empowered to create on their own #XPLAP

A2.1: One assignment for Sr. students was to make "Tell Gr. 9s Why YOUR Instrument is the Best" videos... now it's simply a year-end tradition to make welcome videos and instructional videos for incoming Grade 9 classes! #XPLAP
A2: My students work hard to earn XP to advance their team and avoid curses... Yet I noticed that this turns into more than just the XP but the enjoyment in the journey! #xplap
A3: The game does help, especiallwith my Ss who are still early in the process of moving to intrinsic motivation. Other times, we use object lessons: like today, I used @chloekimsnow 3rd run to emphasize focusing on improvement, & doing your best, not the end result. #XPLAP
A3 Planning in class challenges! Students always get so excited for them! I'm currently planning a multi day Amazing Race Challenge on the first 5 presidents for next week!! I'm so excited! Trying to figure out the prize system for it #xplap
Jump on, free account to try, and explore! Play the games yourself to get a feel for the standards based alignment! New 3-5 games have just been released!! #xplap
A3: In my Survivor Math game, the key element that motivates students is for their tribe to survive the vote every week. It's redundant, but it seems to work well for students! They love seeing their tribe head up the leaderboard. #XPLAP
A3- I've been adding power-ups, clan battles, and a new @ClassCraft Shop. Keeping the game fresh with changes really engages the students. They are the ones who came up with the power-ups and a lot of the shop items! #xplap
A3 my favorite element is powercards. When Ss play them they can change their own experiences. Also giving options on #pbl (topic, group/Indy, product) #xplap
A3: I don't know if it is a trick but I think all good classrooms are rooted in good relationships with students. I make sure to bring a positive vibe to my class and connect with my #CreativeGladiators, my #EDUPioneers, and my #EduDreamers each who become better with #xplap
A3: It starts with the theme/narrative; this is critical for immersion. Story, characters, maps, quests...and a fair, achievable win state for all. #XPLAP
A3 Give students a chance to share, opportunities to incorporate their passions. Model for students by letting them see the effort I put in to growth and my enthusiasm for learning. #xplap
A3 this last unit Ss had to earn keys by completing, certain quest elements. If they earned the 4 keys the unlocked a secret mission (revealed today as a breakout). #xplap
Share, I should do the same the way my students are creating our game cards we had to create councils to keep it organized with some continuity with our leveling ... the students are amazing. #xplap
Q4 - Not too difficult, not too easy: just challenging enough. That creates the flow state of just perfect engagement. Have you witness this in your classroom? How was that moment? #XPLAP
I think the competitive aspect is part of it as well as recognition and discovery. Each piece meets the needs of someone. Then add on a sprinkle of just being unpredictable and they don't know what will happen. #XPLAP
I'm building my EDURPG for next semester. I'm going to test run it last 9 weeks. It's building quickly. I showed it to Ss who help me during my prep and now they want to play the game! They'll compete for Biology badges while fighting bosses and more! That was exciting #XPLAP
Q1 is here! Promoting intrinsic motivation is hard but it sure is rewarding. How do you promote intrinsic motivation within your classes and games? #XPLAP
A3: Creating a storyline and basic game structure helps set my game in motion, but allows for many twists and turns to keep game exciting and personalized to my students interests and needs. #xplap
A4: I feel like some days I have, but haven’t taken the time to notice it. Often, I get so caught up in either documenting S performance or talking with Ss, that I miss those moments. Need to find a system to help me with that, so I can see that FLOW happen. #XPLAP
A4 - I have witnessed the FLOW state this year and it is the greatest feeling as an educator. Requires a perfect storm of engaging and purposeful content, choice, and collaborative learning. We all strive for that feeling! #XPLAP
Q4 - Not too difficult, not too easy: just challenging enough. That creates the flow state of just perfect engagement. Have you witness this in your classroom? How was that moment? #XPLAP
As much as you plan, prepare, and predict what will occur during activities/quests, too often you just never know. But when those just-right moments happen, it’s magical! #xplap

OMG ME too! I'm working hard on creating Unique story lines. Ever Play #NearandFar from @RedRavenGame? There's already excitement 4 the story lines i'm created for my EDURPG. Kids will be able to create their own stories too! #XPLAP
In reply to

Well. Depends. Fits into the SAPS rewards. Some cards allow students to change the product (internal Autonomy), or demonstrate Mastery (ranking up), or creating new guilds (relatedness). Its a bit amorphous #XPLAP
This is something I am constantly working towards. I have had it happen with some boss battles and it is magical! It takes "Intentional planning" but so worth it when it happens. #XPLAP
Q5 - Balance is everything. Extrinsic motivation can be a necessary step towards intrinsic motivation, but it must be kept in balance. How do you do it? #XPLAP
A2: this is what i'm hoping for. Helping students develop intrinsic motivation. My hope is that the characters they create and the stories they develop will help bridge that gap from passive to active learner. #xplap@carnes_darla@A_Dalton13@Robertsjess_1
Q2 - The most wonderful thing that can happen in a game is extrinsic motivation turning into intrinsic motivation. The reward doesn't matter anymore, you just want to be better! Have you witnessed this? #XPLAP
Question for my #xplap peeps...
I'm considering purchasing a button maker to create Michelin star buttons to wear on aprons once Ss reach MasterChef status, do any of you have one? Worth it? #tlap
A5: Having items/badges can work as extrinsic motivators, esp if tied to class privileges, but making the end reward is simply status or other intrinsic reward. #XPLAP
It works best as an individual thing. I have kids that just want to learn and explore. I have others that I need to let them experience the extrinsic so that they can get to the intrinsic. I love it when I catch one of those kids when they aren't expecting it! #XPLAP
We have borrowed one from an area high school and it is awesome! The materials themselves are dirt cheap. Maybe you can partner with another school club? #XPLAP
A5 I think gamification helps create this balance because the extrinsic motivators are still intangibles and impermanent. Eventually students will have a lasting sense of accomplishment and confidence! #xplap
Yes, this is what I'd like to do with my ELA game. I'd love for students to take characters from our read alouds and somehow create the storyline as it goes. #XPLAP

A5 I think gamification helps create this balance because the extrinsic motivators are still intangibles and impermanent. Eventually students will have a lasting sense of accomplishment and confidence! #xplap
A5 I do it while juggling 28 students, who all have their own storyline... Most of the time I find that I have to let go of my storyline and run with the flow... #xplap
That would be so cool to do! My MS kids put their badges on their Science notebooks. It is fun watching them put these out where others can see the badges they have earned. #XPLAP
Took me awhile to find but I would suggest ordering from these guys… Button makers are expensive but this place is cheep and easy… https://t.co/bZ1oAjQGRK#XPLAP
q3: This is the EDURPG i'm building for next semester, I'd love feedback! I wrote this post to discuss: https://t.co/hPkM1VSvzm hyperdoc to EDURPG is halfway down. I'm hoping others share story lines with me! #XPLAP@carnes_darla
A5(cont.) The only reward at end of game is to be at top of leaderboard. If a S reaches the lvl of Obtainer of Rare Antiquities, they get their picture taken wearing my Fedora, satchel, & Indiana Jones jacket & picture goes up on the wall. #XPLAP
In all honesty it often is a happy surprise for both of us, but when I find what gets them going I note it in my google keep (one of my many perpetually open tabs) and then consider how I can recreate the event with a different spin. #XPLAP
A5: Balance is hard to reach… I think it is important to strive for but we also must remember traditional school is pretty out of balance… I think a #gamified course barely moves the needle… #XPLAP
A6: I involve them in the game design. Ask them to help with ideas. I find often they are the best game designers! My best ideas have come from the unmotivated! #xplap
A6: This goes back to having conversations. I try to keep talking to them to see what the backstory is to the lack of motivation. Even if they won’t tell me at first, I keep asking and talking with them each day. They know I don’t go away. #XPLAP
My FRC robotics team has one. Not sure how much we paid or cost of new materials. Thought of making class ones but not finding time :/ They are fun to trade at FRC events though #xplap
A6: I always build in activities in class that students can earn some in game bonuses… I am looking for those students who still have not engaged in the game… Once they do, I give them an item, and most often, they want explore more aspects of the game after that. #XPLAP
For me, it is a constant battle. I just keep trying new things to see what gets them. I am thinking my next step is to tighten my narrative to the game. I just keep trying new things. #XPLAP
A6 I have to come back to the idea of personal connection for unmotivated students. Ss who are unmotivated usually have things they are working through and the best way to help is to build the connection. Ss having some autonomy really helps too. #xplap
You did a great job @pandacucho hosting #XPLAP… Thanks much and I can’t wait to have you host again… Means a lot seeing as you are coming to us from the future.
Im really bummed that I missed this chat. I will definitely have to read back through to see all the awesome stuff you guys talked about #xplap#EDET543
Q4: the problem is Not having an opportunity for FLOW. Disruptions, or classes sometimes too short. But when a class hits Flow, it's like I can see little cartoon thought bubbles coming out of their heads. Makes me feel like i'm doing something right. #XPLAP@carnes_darla
Q4 - Not too difficult, not too easy: just challenging enough. That creates the flow state of just perfect engagement. Have you witness this in your classroom? How was that moment? #XPLAP
A7, and with this I say Goog Night to all: My greatest motivator is kindness. Promoting and teaching kindness. I think is all we need.
Now, I'll get some lunch! Thank you all! #xplap
Thanks everyone. I enjoyed that chat. I hope you didn’t find my questions obtrusive ... just trying to learn and the best way I know how is to ask the tough questions #XPLAP
A7: My biggest internal motivation comes from growth… Seeing myself learn and grow with each creation it motivates me to continue to push the boundaries and do more. #XPLAP
