Hey #waledchat Eric, Elementary AP from Smithville, MO. Excited to join tonight! My least favorite food growing up...square pizza. Yep-I only liked it in triangles! (Picky Eater)
Hi all! Kristen here from PA! I teach 6th grade physical science. Oh, and just to warn you. I’ve been known to eat all the food at parties. Even ask the President.... #waledchat
Intros: Welcome to #waledchat! Please introduce yourself, where you are from, your role in education, and what was your least favorite food growing up? #waledchat
A1: Subject-wise, I loved reading and writing. But more than anything, I always loved connecting to my school's culture - elem, HS and college. Being a part of something bigger made me feel like I belonged, even though I was a shy kid. #waledchat
A1: I always loved knowing that I was going to be challenged - that feeling of walking into the room like "I don't know what we're going to do today but I bet it's going to be good!" #waledchat
A1: I loved school! Absolutely loved writing practice, agriculture classes, FFA & reading. Made the best memories while in FFA. My advisors made connections with us & lasting friendships. #waledchat
A1: I loved having teachers who weren’t afraid to have a little fun and make class interesting. Didn’t matter the subject as long as it was entertaining. #waledchat
A1: I love the fun projects like potato olympics, doing the cha cha slide with Kyle Korver (NBA Star), and Oregon Trail day where we dressed up and made our own butter. So many great times! #waledchat
A1: what didn’t I love about school. I was always one of those kids who just loved everything about school and then played school at home. Still feel the same as an adult. #waledchat
A1: Our schools weren't air conditioned so I remember the TRUE school smells: crayons, pencils, Fried chicken and yeast rolls day in the cafe, my Ts' perfumes. A/C ruined it for me, but I do appreciate AC #waledchat
A1. I loved my music classes and creating things. I liked whenever I got to be creative which sadly was not very often after elementary school. I also lived for field trips. #waledchat
A1: I honestly disliked school growing up and would’ve never imagined me being a teacher as an adult! This was because I never felt engaged with what I was learning. I hated lectures. Loved being with friends at lunch & recess #waledchat
Hello! Bridget here from WI - Academic Dean/Coach. Least favorite food: “Skier’s Casserole” - my mom’s go to with pasta and sausage. Sounds delish now but I hated it... and my parents were old school and made me eat it for breakfast if I didn’t eat it for dinner. #waledchat
A1: Howdy #waledchat ~ I LOVED coloring the maps as we were learning the states and capitals and state birds, flowers, etc. I dreamed about visiting all of those states and loved learning about geography!
Oddly enough, I also loved the smell of paste!
A1. The library. I loved the smell of books and the feel of their pages.
I also loved the computer lab because I loved the typing games.
I always loved math because it was a challenge for me. #waledchat
A1: True confessions... I didn't really like school much. I had a few favorite teachers. I mostly liked sports when I was in middle/high school. #waledchat
A1: I also loved when a teacher seemedto care about me, or at least liked to chat with me... I enjoyed the friendships, loved reading, loved when I was allow3d to be creative... #waledchat
A1: I am sure I could come up with some really good work/experience examples, but in truth, what I picture in my head are the faces of all of the teachers and staff who made me feel welcomed and loved. Too many to name, which is such a privilege. #waledchat
A1: I was a good s, not always a well-behaved s. I loved the success and praise I received from my Ts. I craved it. I wanted the best papers, to do math the fastest, to show I knew trivial facts no one else did, to sing better, make the out of the box connection. #waledchat
A2: It has helped me consider the work I assign, and take other classes into consideration, which has helped me build better relationships with students. #waledchat
A2: Since I previously taught science & now teach tech, I'm able to seamlessly integrate ELA skills for my Ss. Culture-wise, I always start by telling Ss we are a family. Here, they are part of the #SEGwarriornation! #waledchat
A2: Making connections with students. Getting to know what students are interested in doing outside school like sports, their job, hobbies & about their families. They love to share if you are willing to listen. #waledchat
A1 I remember being a fifth grade student and finding a love for reading. My teacher taught me to find books that peeked my interest and I love reading now because of her! #waledchat
A1: I struggled with learning to read but my second grade teacher encouraged and pushed me and reading was my favorite thing about school after that. #waledchat
A2: Toward the end of my farewell tour, I was encouraging meditative coloring, a LOT. There are SO many therapeutic benefits to the practice of coloring. #mindfulness#waledchat
A2: I remember that when I did feel cared for, I worked harder and it was easier to learn. I take that lesson to heart and try to connect with my students in a caring way. I want them to feel comfortable with making mistakes and learning. #waledchat
A2: it made me want to create an atmosphere for students where they felt they could achieve anything! When I was a HS Admin I kept me transcripts from HS just to show students that you can overcome bad choices but there is a price to pay! #waledchat
A2: Hadn’t thought about it that way but because it was imp to me as a student I hope to make Ss realize how intrinsically motivating it can be to do “the right thing” and be noticed for those positives #waledchat
A2: sometimes my love of scchool makes it difficult to relate to those Ss who do not like anything about it. I try to see it as an opportunity to help them find at least one thing to like...not always easy but I never give up #waledchat
A2: Having teachers who cared about me has helped me to be that teacher for my Ss. I genuinely get to know them, have conversations with them, and take time to attend their games, concerts, plays. Knowing that I care about them makes a huge difference in the classroom #waledchat
A2: no matter what I am doing, even if it is “lecture” I try to bring a ton of energy and mix in some humor. I was almost having too much fun in one of my Algebra classes today. #waledchat
A2: Relationshipsare very important to me - it’s all about relationships... I try to engage with each student in my class... we’re also a small school (250 students j so I try to get to know everybody. I try to make reading, writing, speaking and listening relevant... #waledchat
A2: Making moments Ss remember is key! I brought power tools to my classroom, they jacked my car in the air, we did epic science experiments. Make it meaningful! #waledchat
A2: I get my students excited about reading! If they are excited and enjoy it, then school will be more enjoyable for both teachers and students! #waledchat
A2 LOL ironically I'm the ref at the kickball field everyday and they look for me because "I call it fair and calm them down" My 1st year was tough because it challenged me to teach what I love and find easy to Ss who didn't love it at all. My excitement helps! #waledchat
A2: I try to think about ways I can challenge my own Ss - both as a class and individually... My favorite T was great because he would give a S challenge problems or higher level concepts to explore as he walked around checking in. You knew he cared about YOUR learning #waledchat
A2 My library is huge and varied. I get to know my kids and try to match to books they might like. I want them to love reading and be lifelong readers #waledchat
A2: I try and have fun with them. I walk around and talk to them. Joke with them. Let them breathe. I was a wiggly one overflowing with creative excitement. Instead of making me sit and be quiet, most allowed me to be the official class clown of the 8th grade. #waledchat
A2 My passion for learning spilled over into my classroom. I never settle for traditional teaching methods and looked for innovative ways to engage my Ss. #waledchat
A2: Every student is different. BUT I know that my students would see me as someone who is excited for school and hopefully that optimism inspired them to do the same. #waledchat
A2: Because I loved reading in school, (and still do) my students pick up on my excitement and interest when it’s time to read. It’s their favorite time of the day. If i didn’t love it, I don’t think they would either. #waledchat
A2 - I realize the incredible benefits to a healthy body and mind. Even in regular classes I get students up and moving. The social piece is also so important for students. We all need to be appreciated. #waledchat
#waledchat A2: it has helped me see their talents and skills beyond my classroom (getting to see that this year as well because I am student-teaching across 3 departments!)
A2: Content is king, but the king can’t rule without relationships! Kids come first, because #KidsDeserveIt! We need to #BeTheOne for our Ss. #waledchat
A2: As a student, I rarely understood the why behind what we were being asked to do. This taught me to start with the why when working with Ss and Ts. #waledchat
A2. I am able to spend the time I need with each student. If they do not get it at school, they will not get it from home, for most of my students. #waledchat
Check out @LuppesLeaders twitter feed today. She did a book tasting to introuduce genres and get to know her readers. @renathunderhawk and I were guest readers! It was so fun. #waledchat
In reply to
@LBStrunk, @LuppesLeaders, @renathunderhawk
A2: wanting to help my Ts as a Ss hasn't helped me now. However, school was hard for me so I have a great deal of empathy for my stuts who have learning disabilities. While I was not receiving extra support or have an IEP I really get my Ss struggles. #waledchat
A3: Usually math. I struggled with this and lost my confidence as a student in my abilities to learn math. I would tell myself you can’t learn math & believed it. In 3rd grade it was horrible. I disliked Timed multiplication tables. #waledchat
I love incorporating different games whether reviewing for tests or previous lessons. This happens via technology and with low-tech. I also make sure students have access at home to study that doesn't involve memorization #waledchat
A2: My Ss know from day 1 that I define myself as a reader and that one of my goals for them is for them to find a love of reading when they are with me. Reading is my thing and my enthusiasm for it is evident #waledchat
A2: I try to give each group of SS each year their own special memory of their year with me by having going in character a day a year..Mr.Hornschknockle who is my nemesis, Captain Nose Picker, etc #waledchat
A3: Because I was shy, I really disliked group work or unstructured social time, where I was internally freaking out about who I would talk to or work with. #waledchat
A2:
I think my need for praise was a need for connection. So, as a teacher, I try to always make those connections, give meaningful praise, give feedback that will help Ss teach the next level, then celebrate with them when they achieve. #waledchat
A2. I help Ss out with their homework. A lot of Ss have difficulties in math. Working 1:1 with them, watching how they problem solve, where their struggling, how we can suggest tips that can help. Encourage them to succeed and take risks!#waledchat
A3 I didn't enjoy teachers who would constantly lecture without letting us work. I often preferred working on my own and figure out concepts through discovery. #waledchat
A3: I remember how hard studying was for me. It took me awhile before I could get through basic quizzes. Eventually I got more support and found success. #waledchat
A3: I absolutely hated busy work! I always wanted to be challenged and found that some teachers wouldn’t differentiate to meet my needs or provide me with any enrichment activities. #waledchat
Hi #waledchat! Jumping in late as my son and I were finishing our nightly #HarryPotter chapter together before bed. Hillary, Literacy Specialist in VA. Least fav. childhood food were Brussels sprouts (which I now ❤️)
A3: When I got to high school, I didn't feel the same level of warmth that I did in the younger grades. It was a hard time for me, and so the safety zone that I had always had at school didn't seem to be there any more. I started to dislike being there. #waledchat
A2: It helps me remember that there are so many things outside of the classroom that influence how kids feel about school. Many want to feel a part of something great. #waledchat
A3 I disliked round robin reading in school. I grew up having speech problems and was embarrassed to have others hear me read. My personal experience taught me to teach reading differently! #waledchat
A3: I was diagnosed as hyperactive when I was 5. Dealing with ADHD made it really hard for me to focus and concentrate, which seemed to come easily for my peers. #waledchat
A3: The other kids. 😂 if we’re being honest here... I didn’t have any friends. I much preferred adults. They were safer...hated group work. Work was never good enough. And I didn’t like gym class in me because the gym teacher wouldn’t let the girls play football. #waledchat
A2. I realized that my favorite moments in school were memory related and not everyone is interested in the academics. I want to provide Ss with great memories and use what interests them to connect with them. I use my interests to build relationships. #waledchat
A3: As a Ss I really didn't like to read and I really hated when the whole class sat with the anthology book and we had to read aloud when our turn. #waledchat
A3: Math. I didn’t get it, couldn’t figure out why, felt like a failure all the time. I remember this from 3rd grade on. I struggled so much until I re-learned it with CCSS concepts. Blew my mind wide open! #waledchat
A3 I don't remember disliking at a younger age. I disliked being judged by my brother's actions instead of the teacher 1st getting to know me. The other was the teacher who would sit Ss in rows in numerical order by their test score of the week. #waledchat
A3: I read incredibly slowly so I hated classes where mountains of reading were assigned in one night like it was nothing - My friends had no problem, I felt like an idiot, I learned to stop reading and start asking friends for a summary. I made it through APs that way #waledchat
A3: I didn’t like intimidating teachers. I didn’t like bullies. I didn’t like teachers who didn’t have patience to truly help. I didn’t like teachers who were bullies. I didn’t like feeling stupid in elementary school. I didn’t like the anxiety or sleepless nights... #waledchat
A3: I didn’t feel that I had a caring adult in the building! Someone who understood what was happening in my neighborhood 🌆🌇🏙🌃 that cared enough to check in! #waledchat
#waledchat A3: I think I generally liked school throughout. I recognize now that I was a very anxious kid (K-8 probably)... I think things might have been different (but I don't know if "better"?) if someone had noticed that. 1/2
A3: As a kid I disliked going to the school library The librarians were mean and never read to us or encouraged us to read We went, sat, got reprimanded, then our T would pick us up #waledchat
#waledchat A2: I tend to be the random special education teacher who often wanders over to help with the band when I can. It shows the students and parents that band can be a lifelong activity! Tweeting from a community band rehearsal!
A3: worksheets. Hated them as a student then, hate them as a teacher now. A close second- homework. I’d always have to do it super late when I should have been asleep because of softball, volleyball, or basketball practice #ditchbook#waledchat
A4: It's not always super obvious who the Ss are that feel insecure - I certainly didn't always look or act like the shy, anxious kid. As a T, I make sure to gently force students into groups that I know will work well for them. #waledchat
A4: I often times allow students to choose who they want to work with. Yes, sometimes I assign the groups, but I try to allow students to pick their collaborators more frequently than I had the opportunity to! #waledchat
A2: as a teacher, safety/a positive classroom environment ( and all of our procedures that go along with that!) are so important to me. I need my little ones to feel safe (physically and emotionally). It’s my number one goal. #waledchat
A3 Kris from NY jumping in..I always disliked when ae had to restate the question and answer in full sentences...always saw copying none sense from textbooks as waste of time #waledchat
A3: I didnt like when "English" was linked with reading. I wanted to read and explore literature and writing. I did NOT want to diagram a sentence. #waledchat#stillangryoveritapparently 😂
A3. I was shy and quiet. I was tall and always got shoved in the back of the room! When I was in first grade, I remember the teacher across the hall used to constantly have several Ss lined up in hall to disapline with a paddle! #waledchat
A4: I try to be the energetic yet effective teacher. I also try to be that guy thats always showing my kids love. One student said yesterday "Shoot Mr. Willis, you make our school day go by so fast!" #waledchat
A4: Always have the option for ss to work alone. If they are always talking to me, I listen and engage with them. If they ask to move seats, I do without questions. #waledchat
A4: Early in my career, I adopted the motto: Every Child by Name and Need Every Day. I wanted kids to feel like they mattered to me and to our class. #waledchat
Q3: I always disliked getting called on when I didn’t have my hand raised (elementary — college). Ugh. 🤯😳(probably very surprising to my teachers because I never stopped talking). #waledchat
A4: I give Ss ways to give feedback on their group and intervene early. I also try to planprojects where each person is responsible for one piece of the whole. #waledchat
A4: I never make Ss read alone unless they ask to. When we practice reading everyone is reading (at their own pace) or we are all reading in unisone to support or fluency. #waledchat
A4: We all have things we struggle with, but once you know your students you can highlight something they do well. Offer them help. Willingness to show you are in it with the Ss, small steps are okay. Let them know you struggle, fall short & are not perfect. #waledchat
A4: We do some group work, some partner work, but mostly independent work. If we do group work, I make sure that I am going around to each of the groups and checking in to make sure all students are participating and doing the work or that they have a specific role. #waledchat
A4: In my own classroom, I try to create activities that engage all my Ss and are appropriate for their level. I always have enrichment activities ready for Ss. I love being able to integrate technology which really allows me to amplify student voice and choice. #waledchat
#waledchat A3 Something I hated about school was recess ended in 6th grade. #tragedy I was the recipient of verbal bullying in 5th and 6th grade. Really didn't develop friendships in JH and HS because of this. I enjoyed school, but missed out with close friends.
A4 - I try everyday to make kids smile, laugh, feel special and teach in a way that helps them love learning. It is about mastering your craft and always reflecting on how to best reach kids. #waledchat
A4: I have taught at schools where I would go the school library with my class to "help" the media specialist provide a "pleasing" experience for SS. #waledchat
A4: I try to help my students no matter how many times they ask the same question... I tell them that if I get frustrated it’s not with them but with trying to figure things out with them... #waledchat
A4: I am very conscious of the amount of math I ask students to do on their own... Partly because of photomath, but also I knkwany people are "math-phobic" and I can gauge who is lost or overwhelmed better from working with them than from checking homework #waledchat
A4: By trying to connect with them and help them to see the benefits to what we are doing or the task they are challenged with during that lesson. #waledchat
A4: I always tried to set up opportunities for kids to play. I wanted kids to feel comfortable, even before I wanted them to be able to conjugate verbs! I wanted them to like school and love learning; play, after all, is our brain's favorite way to learn! #waledchat
Same here!!!! I have rebuilt my math brain and absolutely love math. A4 is that I use my own experiences to help both S’s and staff. Anyone in my building can probably confirm I can “talk math” forever. #waledchat
A4. The boring feeling that I had in school drives almost everything I fight for with my students and all students at my school. I had so many meaningless assignment and I don’t want my students to feel that way. #waledchat
A4 I work really hard to create a community. Ss need to feel safe in order to be willing to share. Our school also uses Responsive Classroom which helps. I also partner with my shy kids at the beg of the year for shares. #waledchat
A5 The week that I spent learning @codeorg curriculum was fun and engaging. Exactly the kind of teaching that I respond too. I give it a 10. #waledchat
#waledchat A4. I try to find activities that are educational and relevant. Cannot find something for everyone for every lesson, but students are kept in mind during planning.
A4b - I think that one of the biggest hurdles is a lack of true reflection. As I’m teaching, I try to think what my own teens would be thinking if they were in my class. If it’s about how they hate it, I should try something else. #waledchat
A4: I prevent my students from feeling that way by allowing plenty of think time, “put your thumb on your knee if you’re ready,” and utilizing turn and talks (and pairing the more vocal students with those that need a little push!) #waledchat
A4 I make it a point to conference with Ss when scores pop up and we go over their work right then and there. Then, I plan time to go over it again as a larger group. Then, they are able to reassess their learning. #waledchat
Never understood why profs would do that in college, considering I was paying for that education. I'd contribute a lot, and always hated when I got called on when I had a hand down because I wanted to learn and didn't have the answer! #waledchat
A4: Helping Ss feel safe to share their opinions and make mistakes without fear of ridicule or “being wrong”. Being sure they know their voice matters and is respected - all help to gain confidence #waledchat
A4: rather than being overly strict, I try to get Ss to understand how their actions impact themselves as well as their peers. I want Ss to know that we are partnering in their education and not just me telling them what to do #waledchat
A5: The best part of my summer was the birth of my twin nieces....definitely a 10! It's been so incredible to see my son get to be a big cousin - he loves those girls as much as I do! #waledchat
A2. I’m not an educator per se; however, I use techniques that previous instructors have used that I found to be helpful when training staff. #waledchat
A2: It helps with the connections because they see and feel my excitement and joy, I model respect for diversity (pronounce their names correctly!), and because I constantly worked to ensure the environment of inclusiveness I thrived in as a S. #waledchat
A4. In our school, they use PBIS for behavior with clips and dojo points. Our children do not have to see something like that everyday going on! #waledchat
A4: I think that struggling with math has enabled me to teach math better. Because I struggled with the abstract, I make sure that my students always have access to manipulatives. #waledchat
I would say as well that I now see math as social justice. Our “survivor” kids are so good at hands-on application of math concepts. They are problem-solvers by necessity and I see math as a way to help build that skill AND understand how deeply math ties to the world.#waledchat
#waledchat A4: I sure hope I haven't made anyone too anxious! Maybe part of this "re-inventing myself" idea comes through when I try to have a clean slate with students even after less-than-ideal behaviour.
A5: Trip to MN was all 1-10. 1-long car ride home. 5-The big fish that got away. 10-Beautiful scenery, staying up playing Catan, and spending time with family. #waledchat
A4: I tell our students everyday that I care about them and even attend ball games, baptisms, concerts, etc I greet our car 🚗 riders every morning while others do the same for bus 🚌 riders. #waledchat
A4:
I give students choice, balance independent and group work. It’s drama, we’ve got to group work. My group work is always graded as individuals. I even let students create alternative assignments & assessments if they meet the standards. #waledchat
#waledchat A4 There is a VERY powerful story about me being bullied in my book. I have read this story to my Ss each year on #ReadAcrossAmericaDay THEY LOVE IT! Get an applause each time I read it. Has a powerful message! 1 bad action can ERASE DOZENS of happy memories.
A5: Honestly, setting up a table at Walmart with a team of admin and teachers from our school to help parents shop for school supplies! We had a blast☄️! #waledchat
A5: Best thing was a 10 - my family sent me to California for 5 days to be with my BFF. Just me, I had no one to worry about - was able to rest and reset after summer school before the start of the school year. #waledchat
A5: Participating in the @franceintheus SPCD program at @cavilamvichy in Vichy France - 2 week’s completelyimmersed in the French language and culture was the best professional experience I have had. This is hands down a 10!!! #waledchat
A5: My 10 personally -watching my son start his first year as an ocean LIT (Lifeguard in Training) we spent countless hours at the beach. My 10- professionally- #hivesummit hands down. #waledchat
It makes me angry to think about. I remember that teachers used to put our tests on the wall or put race cars on a time line so we could see who had mastered concepts and who hadn't. It was terrible.
I know you handle it so differently. You care about your kids. #waledchat
A5: Travelling to Utah with my wife to see her son... Park City, a night at Top Golf, a few hours looking at the stars, watching a dozen July 4 fireworks displays simultaneously from a high elevation... awesome!!! #waledchat
