Welcome to #sunchat! So excited to have @historycomics Tim Smyth with us today to talk comics and graphic novels in the classroom for all subject areas! Susan from the Jersey Shore, seeing some sunshine for the first day in many- hi all!! *waves like a Royal*
I've been stocking my class shelves with graphic novels to complement our WW2 and Holocaust reading of "Number the Stars" - the kids have picked up so much background info on the setting and events from them during our independent reading time each day. #sunchat#6thgrade
Good Morning #sunchat I'm up and had a cup of coffee while chatting with #hacklearning. Comics and graphic novels really aren't my thing, glad I'm hear to learn. Elementary SPED T in Colorado.
Graphic novels and comics are great for this - students will often pick up a book and read it that night or I class - then consider more research. It is this meduim that grabs attention! #sunchat

Anyone have specific questions? Great lessons to share? I put a lot of - if I do say so myself - great ideas and resources on https://t.co/DlJiUZCv4j#sunchat
Not my thing either. I realized in my 2nd year of teaching that nothing has to be my thing. All that matters is that I get students to learn. I feel like it is getting harder each year to reach them. Maybe its just me #sunchat
The impact of representation in comics on my students. My āreluctantā reader son (hate that designation!) who learned to read a/comics https://t.co/ZhdEDprpRV#sunchat
What barriers are there to using comics in the classroom? What misconceptions do you have to debunk? How do you deal with people who donāt see them as valuable? #sunchat
Using a popstar template is a great way to have kids turn the protagonist of a story or book into a Superhero, highlighting the traits of a character, is a great way to engage kids in any type of ELA or SS story. Just google for a template, or DM me - I have a file! #sunchat
Paula from Ky. Graphic novels got my now 15 yr old into reading when he was in 1st grade. I see them becoming more prevalent . Some of our students used them for the Percy Jackson series.#sunchat
I got one!!! Is there anything you have to do differently with HS students (11th & 12th)? I see this exploding at elementary and middle. Wondering if my upper classman would think it is childish. Also wondering if students make them? If so, how? #sunchat
I throw research at them - even gave my central office folks a copy of my Masters thesis on using comics to engage readers. I also show my publications and invite people into my room. #sunchat the research is there
I guess I need to just pull some off the shelves and read them. I have littles, and am teaching reading, but I love to read to them, so this could help. I just want something more than Captain Underpants - I haven't read, but then again may be due to my age. #sunchat
So true. I think I am a cool and innovative teacher. However, I canāt get them to be off their phone doing other stuff. Even when I have them using it for me!!!! #sunchat

This is my classroom for high schoolers - including AP students! They love it! My class is the one that is talked about. Itās all about showing the skills being taught and that comics are a true reflection of our society. #sunchat
Iāve seen them pull in students who had little interest in reading. Learning should be personal and comics is what speaks to you... Hooray for unlocking another door. #sunchat
Go to your local comic store. This is a response I get a lot - comics are so much more than silly or superheroes - so much has changed with this literature. #sunchat
Check this one out, Stephanie. The 9/11 Report - perfect for adults, explains the entire report in this format. I have it - it is great. "Comics" are not just for kids! #sunchat@StephDill92https://t.co/qtFDZgRrYp

Here is how my students make history heroes - https://t.co/xXqATfE2jj. We also make comics on modern day Civil Rights issues after reading March. Itās all research and skills. #sunchat
I am so jealous of your classroom size. I am in a closet. I am upgrading next year though. I might be copying you!!!!! I promise I will give you credit. #sunchat
#sunchat Curious to see how others use comics to engage with controversial and/or difficult topics. I've used March to talk about empathy. I'm thinking of using Doctorow and Yang's In Real Life to talk about wealth and poverty, but this will be my first time doing that!
I canāt keep up! You all are asking great questions - I may have to get back to some of you later today. https://t.co/VdseltYhIQ has a lot of my resources as well. #sunchat
I have a student this year who's a huge manga fan. He's been sharing titles enthusiastically & taught me recently about non-intuitive directional format. Graphic formats themselves present new literacy challenges -- even (especially?) for long-time, avid readers. #sunchat
Littles currently are k-3, will be doing K-5 next year. I do it all, so I need a wide range. As a kid and even now I loved the Sunday comics and have 5 or 6 books of Calvin and Hobbes - love those. That is about as far as my range goes. I must learn more! #sunchat
My Cartoons, Comics and Animations page https://t.co/M0WJTcVSRF Aside from teaching I wrote educational materials for the utility industry. Below is one of the educational comic books that I wrote. Yes, comics can be a gateway to literacy! #sunchat

It is a medium that has always been popular. My husband (almost 50) talks about comics/graphic novels with friends all the time. I just think social media is making it more known #sunchat
Yes! I often need to teach students - and adults - how to read comics. We donāt just ha d out textbooks without teaching reading skills - same for comics. Many have never read one before. It is like hypertext reading - 21st century reading skills! #sunchat
One of my monthly books to read is a graphic novel. Each month is a new genre (romance, mystery, nonfiction, etc.). For this month, I do a book tasting. The kids get a menu with the titles, and they go to one of the tables. In each round, they are given about 7 min to āsampleā-
Nope! This girl loves them! ;-) I have found that the topic of the novel drives the engagement, and not the format. Once students understand how to read and think critically about the format, they love them! #sunchat
Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics is a great resource for this. I also talk about the history of comics, and will often walk students through the actual mechanics of reading them, since unfamiliarity is sometimes first challenge. #sunchat
Today's #sunchat reminds me of this blog post from late last year: https://t.co/k0wLqDJ1gM Worthy sampling of the breadth, depth of graphic formats for readers of many ages.

And there are so many awesome female protagonists in graphic novels that aren't typical found in print only novels. Check out Nameless City by @FaithErinHicks Amulet by @boltcity or the Giants Beware series by @rafael_rosado1 and @jorgeagu#sunchat

Good to know!! Anyone have a favorite they use to introduce students to the medium. Would love to get a classroom set for my Algebra II and AP calc next year. #sunchat
I love this resource! I have found the unfamiliarity with the mechanics of reading a graphic novel is what makes many people hesitant to read them...especially adults. #sunchat

I present at universities on this topic - the undergrads are so thankful to hear that education is more than tests and āstandardsā - itās about our passions. Mine are comics and hip hop https://t.co/E78rYmmiAu I slide he next generation of teachers! #Sunchat
Also, if biographies are a thing - there are so many graphic forms of biographies on famous people. Just google on Amazon - you'd be surprised what is out there. How's this for Science for Math? Check it out! #sunchat@thnorfarhttps://t.co/gikqRaaIpJ
I canāt recommend these two books enough. @halseanderson Speak is soul searing. Itās not ājustā a book for girls - it had a major impact on me. https://t.co/nZEOXgpSrn - my review is here #Sunchat

Every kid deserves a fresh start every day. Curious to hear from compassionate teachers who schedule time to just āhangā with students 1:1 or in small groups, and the nature of that time is unimpacted by anything thatās happened negatively with those kids. #HackLearning#sunchat
#hacklearning A2) compassionate teachers leave the past in the past. If you don't let the fact that you had to discipline a student affect how you treat the student the rest of the year.
Both of these still give me goosebumps when I think of them! Alfonso Jones is a great stepping stone for so many important social justice conversations, stories and steps forward. #sunchat
I am off to the doctor for a nasty cold. Thank you for having me! Feel free to reach out to me if I can be of any help. https://t.co/VdseltYhIQ or historycomicsguy@gmail.com. Iāll be doing some teacher workshops this summer. #sunchat

Potential value in that challenge for readers of any stripe. Kind of like trying to perform a familiar task with one's off (a.k.a. non-dominant) hand. Still, the effort can feel decidedly uncomfortable. #sunchat

Graphic novels allow people to tackle tough topics in a non-threatening, engaging way that paves the way for relatability and empathy. #sunchat#STEAMPoweredEd
