#worldgeochat is a weekly chat focused on teaching geography and global studies. Chats vary between geography specific topics as well as general teaching and education topics. ALL are welcome in worldgeochat!
Welcome to #worldgeochat! Tonight we're talking about the first 4 Global Goals - Happy & Healthy Life!
Take a minute to tell us who you are, where you are, and what you do!
Wahoo! #worldgeochat is beginning and our main focus is #GlobalGoals! Sam here from MA, 7th grade world geography teacher and 1/7 of moderation team. Feel I focused a little TOO much on SDGs this year, but also feel like I didn't help students enough. #TeachSDGs
Welcome to #worldgeochat! Tonight we're talking about the first 4 Global Goals - Happy & Healthy Life!
Take a minute to tell us who you are, where you are, and what you do!
Hi everyone! Ed, 7th grade geography teacher in the suburbs of Chicago. I'm looking forward to hearing how other teachers are addressing the Global Goals in their classrooms #worldgeochat#GlobalGoals
I think you'll find that you probably do some stuff surrounding the Global Goals already! I have a stack of commemorative Gold Stars for tonight! #worldgeochat
Welcome to #worldgeochat! Tonight we're talking about the first 4 Global Goals - Happy & Healthy Life!
Take a minute to tell us who you are, where you are, and what you do!
We have 5 questions tonight.
Qs 1-4 are 2 parters asking how we teach about the goal AND how we get students to TAKE ACTION!
Answer both parts if you can!
#worldgeochat
Hi Jessica! I just got my copy of Kelly G and Penny K's new book! Can't wait to dig in! How was the spring break reading? Any good ones I should check out? #worldgeochat
A1b - Ss should look into the various programs that are available in the community & then work towards aiding them, or creating something that addresses a missed issue #worldgeochat
A1
I introduce poverty when talking about economic indicators. It's always interesting when they compare GDP per capita between places like USA & Ivory Coast. Enlightening.
#worldgeochat
Q1a: We like to take a look at HDI and evaluate what "wealth" is first. We also take a look at what factors cause/grow impoverished conditions.
Q1b: ADVOCATE and take action. Determine what conditions cause poverty locally and what we can do to change them
#worldgeochat
A1a We have discussions about needs v. Wants, we watch videos like this one for SEL & discuss poverty around the world 🌍 https://t.co/dUV4sQ3ZVq#worldgeochat
A1b we use empathy driven design thinking to generate solutions to real world problems then work towards solving them, we collected Hurricane supplies for a family in US VI this fall #worldgeochat
A1 Start with maps and spatial distributions. Ask students to fill in the incomplete data. Left Daily Caloric Supply...Right Poverty. Then ask why, how, what next Sources: UN/Factbook #worldgeochat
But also the flip side of that coin is that many students come from such privileged backgrounds the only concept of poverty to them is what they see on TV. And those very same kids could be sitting next to a student of extreme poverty and be blind to it. #worldgeochat
A1a: We start with a Money Economy Simulation in my Econ unit. Everyone starts equal but has to try to make a profit. We have 2 min. trading years, and eveyyear the cost of living goes up. By the end, only 1 or 5 countries has enough food& $ to meet requirements.#worldgeochat
It was on my desk when I came back from Spring Break!! Can't wait to read it ...and I added more books to my To Read list than I did to my Read list over Break! #worldgeochat
A1b - Ss should look into the various programs that are available in the community & then work towards aiding them, or creating something that addresses a missed issue #worldgeochat
I like to introduce topics like this with books...develop empathy and then investigate further. A good way in is also to look at statistics, infographics, images. #worldgeochat
A1 As a history T, I take a different angle. We discuss poverty in terms of haves (those with power) and the have nots (w/o power). Learning a lot about #SDGs#worldgeochat
Yes and having a forum (and protocols) for structuring difficult conversations gives students power and skills to take that conversation into their homes and communities. #worldgeochat
Jesse Pruitt from the great wetlands of Indiana! First time here tonight! First ED Twitter chat as well, happy to be here. Teacher of AP Human Geo, GHW as well as World History and Economics #worldgeochat#rainraingoaway
A1a: I would introduce poverty to students through inquiry investigation. One great resource to use is https://t.co/c9asbS7hAH. A1b: Students can take action in so many ways. Check out the resources to get started @TheWorldsLesson#worldgeochat
The highlight of my spring break read was Love, Hate, & Other Filters by Samira Ahmed! It was outstanding! So glad to see it selected as a Global Read Aloud book. #worldgeochat
Do kids still make a connection to Great Depression? I remember my grandparents telling me about it when I was a kid, but most of our Ss today don't have relatives that can pass on stories from then. #worldgeochat
A1b: Start local - what efforts can Ss take part in within their own communities to combat poverty. Ts can help my incorporating service learning opportunities. Also a great chance to talk civics & local gov’t, and their impacts on poverty. #worldgeochat
The best part is when I ask them if our country "passes" the test: Does the US have enough food and money for all of their people? Then we have a discussion about the haves and have nots, wealth distributionnand about homelessness and poverty in our community. #worldgeochat
Hello world! Looking forward to hearing more about how to bring goals 1-4 to my students! It may be cold and dreary here in Connecticut tonight, but it looks like the #worldgeochat is heating up!
That’s a good question. I fear it is becoming yet another footnote in the history book (although the programs that sustained the growth of the 50s-60s (Pax Americana) are directly attributed to it and are still affecting us today #worldgeochat
Q1a: For my AP kiddos we take a good look at the HDI of countries to look at poverty, for GHW we dont discuss poverty nearly as much as we should. Mostly look at proverty through environmental issues, education, and health. #worldgeochat
I think those little things can be so powerful for Ss. When they know where their donations are going to and what those people are dealing with especially. #worldgeochat
Eyed that one at Anderson's many times! My book stack was too tall though! Will have to get to it this summer! My summer reading shelf is already OOC #worldgeochathttps://t.co/k1G676Fxj7
Joining tonight while rubbing my 7 yr olds feet. He just won’t give up. But I’m here from the about to get really windy mountains of VA. #worldgeochat
I think that Ss would relate more to understanding the concept of establishing a "living wage" & the discussion of lack of entry level jobs ... examples are evolving
#worldgeochat
In reply to
@GeoSpiegs, @cheffernan75, @AriMarucci
I was subbing a couple of years ago and the teacher left the Great Depression series to watch. In it, a man recalled having to bury stillborn babies in shoeboxes. So many of the Ss immediately fell apart because Amazon & Zappos have made shoeboxes ubiquitous. #worldgeochat
A2a: Help students understand global hunger through infographics and mapping. A2b: Create a pathway for them to take action. Check out the work with @the_wonderment#worldgeochat
Q1b: In addition to teaching I am my schools sponsor of our community service group @fhs_service. That group has tried to empower students to tackle poverty through our local food bank and homeless shelters, as well as a local food program called @Eagle_Packs#worldgeochat
A2a - discussion of the need for the Green Revolution & comparison of world produce markets; also, the free bfast/lunch/dinner programs
A2b - volunteering at food pantries or soup kitchens, or having them research solutions!
#worldgeochat
A2a: As someone who's teaching geo for the first time this year, making my kids aware of perspectives and situations different from theirs has been really important to me. Discussion helps and widens views! #worldgeochat
I remember being in 5th grade and my school participated in the Rice program. I wish I was able to bring that to my students. It was a "lottery" system in which only a small percentage ate a full meal where the majority ate rice and beans to develop empathy #worldgeochat
A2a: We first look at the diets of different regions and then evaluate the impact of globalization. We really focus on Haiti for this.
A2b: Choose a focus, research, determine priority needs, and fund-raise or hold a food drive
#worldgeochat
A2a
For my #SDG2 Take Action group, the project they are trying to develop is a garden plot on school grounds that they could then donate to a local food pantry. Not sure if it will get approved, but their desire to do more than just COLLECT food is impressive! #worldgeochat
Whoa. Redoing that class and “just happen to have a dozen amazon boxes in the front of the room for no apparent reason” would spark some interesting reactions #worldgeochat
In reply to
@NatGeoEducation, @cheffernan75, @AriMarucci
A2a: We address hunger when we talk about the impact of desertification in Africa, delayed or strong Monsoons in India, and the demands of a growing population in China. I feel I need to address this more head on. I'm looking forward to ideas from #worldgeochat
Having open and honest conversations. I love using Knowledge Building Circles in the classroom. Often after looking at some data, images, statistics. Hear what the students think. #worldgeochat
A2: I know both Material World and Hungry Planet have been mentioned, but my students eyes grow wide when they realize some families' possession in Material World focus primarily on food. #worldgeochat
Q2b
I love when Ss talk about Hunger that they try to avoid collections and reference "Give a man a fish & he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish & he'll eat for a lifetime." They're trying to find real solutions, no just charity. #worldgeochat
A2a I’ve been interacting with classes from around the world, S’s are beginning to grasp the idea that others don’t have as much as they do, they are intrinsically motivated to share, Fox the world, we are finding the path together #worldgeochat
A2a: When discussing world hunger, also crucial to incorporate a discussion on the global water crisis. In the past, I’ve worked this into my unit on Africa using a LWTW. Discussions with students have been incredibly powerful. #worldgeochat
I did this too at a student leadership camp- it was really powerful realizing that I had a choice to eat and other people didn't. You could do it on a small scale: maybe invite one class to lunch and try it there? #worldgeochat
We have been exploring the goals through our Model United Nations group- super fun to learn all about what different countries are doing to solve world hunger. We even interviewed our local Brazilian consulate about the steps they’ve taken! #worldgeochat
I wasn't aware of this one. The @googleearth Voyager stories are an incredible resource for teachers and students and they are always adding new ones to check out! Great stuff! #worldgeochat

Q3a – How can we address health and healthcare in a geography class?
Q3b – How can students take action for “Good Health and Well-Being”?
#worldgeochat
#worldgeochat is giving me so many ideas already. Recently did the cultural importance of tea in the middle east, and already thinking of how I can continue to talk about food and hunger in other nations as the year continues. Thank you!
I love how you dovetail physical geography/climate with the human effect. Making kids think about the inter-connectivity of the planet and the repercussions of a failing climate on health/longevity/poverty. #worldgeochat
A3a: One thing that I like to do with this topic is talk about indoor plumbing, I often show a map of countries were many people still defecate outside. We talk about how sanitation and hygiene improvements can eliminate many health issues. #worldgeochat
They have PowerPoints and a curriculum guide, which I have for that book & Material World. I used to use it in my APHG class. They're great!! #worldgeochat
A3a we explored the story of children who walk 6 miles for water, we walked around outside for one mile and discussed it would be 5 more times before we get the water #worldgeochat
A3a - my Med Academy's class is ALL about discussing the innovations that have been created & discussing the status of healthcare around the world
A3b - Ss are working on their East Meets West Health Fair rn ... looking at how alt med can be used!
#worldgeochat
A3b: Help promote education and awareness about health and well-being. Work with school admin to gain an understanding about what resources already exist, that no in is using. #worldgeochat
I have the Geography Alive, text but I need to look through it more. I use a lot of news articles, youtube videos, brainpop (Wangari Maathai- greenbelt revolution) to help them. I do a ton of research. I need to put it all in one spot to share. #worldgeochat
Q3a – How can we address health and healthcare in a geography class?
Q3b – How can students take action for “Good Health and Well-Being”?
#worldgeochat
Q3a – How can we address health and healthcare in a geography class?
Q3b – How can students take action for “Good Health and Well-Being”?
#worldgeochat
A3: connecting geography to the basic needs of humans and how they meet those needs, and going from there to basic healthcare is a chain that helps Ss approach this content #worldgeochat
I need to explore BrainPop more. Is it appropriate for middle school? I feel all I hear of from BrainPop is that it's geared towards elementary? #worldgeochat
A1A Used to do it by using 100 jelly beans & Giving a few people about 90 and the rest were divided up among the other 25-30 students to demonstrate distribution of wealth #worldgeochat

#worldgeochat
Q3a – How can we address health and healthcare in a geography class?
Q3b – How can students take action for “Good Health and Well-Being”?
#worldgeochat
Q3a: One thing that I always make sure students know is that Healthcare is not evenly distributed throughout the world, what can be a simple health issue here can be life threatening elsewhere. #worldgeochat
A3.1 team up with health educator for an interdisciplinary unit and create a local solution for health issues affecting the community, then branch out and connect with others around the world with similar health challenge #worldgeochat
A3: The book A Long Walk to Water touches on the subject of availability of healthcare, especially as it is related to unclean water.
#worldgeochat#TeachSDGs#SDGs
A3b
Taking Action is so much harder for this one. There are things we can do locally to help with this - teaching other Ss about "Vampire Coughing" or the importance of handwashing has an impact on #SDG3.
#worldgeochat
A3: I like to find examples of how lack of access to healthcare influences/shapes a community. For example, water-borne disease/sanitation and mosquitoes/malaria are high interest and accessible to middle schools. #worldgeochat
Q3a – How can we address health and healthcare in a geography class?
Q3b – How can students take action for “Good Health and Well-Being”?
#worldgeochat
Thank you. Speaking of this was a doc I created and it has 3 videos & 2 articles on the impact of climate change in South Asia- specifically monsoons #worldgeochat.
https://t.co/bPQgVGpSMT
A3: A few weeks ago a students shared with me that her uncle in Congo died from drinking unclean water. Lack of or limited healthcare has touched our classroom.
#TeachSDGs#SDGs#worldgeochat
I did a similar thing with Apartheid unit several years back. 90% of the room was taped off with blue painters tape and only 2 students were allowed to use it. 20 other student had to sit in 10% of class then discuss disease, health care, access to doctors, et al #worldgeochat
A3A Have Ss investigate correlations between live expectancy, health access, & geographic areas. In the US do this w/ Ss investigating healthcare access correlations to public policies such as redlining. It's amazing (not really) how they correlate #worldgeochat
This is such a good point! We don't worry about infections or our water supply, but those things can have HUGE consequences in other places. That's a great example! GOLD STAR!
#worldgeochat
I just book talked this book today when I introduced the plan for our 5th annual Walk for Water that @cheffernan75 has organized each year. #worldgeochat
One of the most sobering things was when I was in Colombia and found out that if I got sick, that State Dept's best advice was to get well enough to be transferred out of Colombia. Definitely made me think. #worldgeochat
Thank you. Speaking of this was a doc I created and it has 3 videos & 2 articles on the impact of climate change in South Asia- specifically monsoons #worldgeochat.

Q4a – How should we define “Quality Education” for our students?
Q4b – How can students take action to ensure every child on the planet gets a “Quality Education”?
#worldgeochat
I teach 6th grade so they are in between- it's school appropriate and has some great info. Check out the free social studies episodes- 9-11 is good. I believe MLK is free too. https://t.co/57gfIm9MZB#worldgeochat
A4: interesting enough, my Ss actually discussed school shootings through the lens of the inability to provide a "Quality Education" ... it was a very interesting discussion! #worldgeochat
A4A: Quality education, in my opinion, means widening my student's worlds and helping them see more than just what's outside their front door. Helping them to see, and hopefully understand, the perspective of someone different is critical. #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat GOLD STAR. Not for the sobering thought but for the authentic story that students need to hear so they can shift their perspective and gain empathy.
One of the most sobering things was when I was in Colombia and found out that if I got sick, that State Dept's best advice was to get well enough to be transferred out of Colombia. Definitely made me think. #worldgeochat
So true. One of the most haunting situations comes from malaria-vulnerable populations who use mosquito nets ... for fishing. No easy answers with the SDGs. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/NtO2YuhvhZ
A4a: You have to have an understanding of what kind of education is required for success by country. Is a college degree needed?
A4b: Advocate for a children's literacy program and run a book drive for struggling schools and other nations. #worldgeochat
A4a recently a T @april_janicki traveled to South Africa, we @SkypeClassroom w/ her & our S’s learned first hand what education looks like there, how not every child can afford access, we compared the size of their learning space to ours, very eye opening #worldgeochat
RT
Q4a – How should we define “Quality Education” for our students?
Q4b – How can students take action to ensure every child on the planet gets a “Quality Education”?
#worldgeochat
Yes! I love giving students time to play on https://t.co/wOft5QKm54, develop correlations, and create questions- so many questions relate to policy! #worldgeochat
A4B: Starting small and then growing big! I think of one of the programs my student council runs - they read stories to younger grades. Small, but effective - many of our Ss do not have access to books or someone to read with. #worldgeochat
I KNOW ... I had several Ss come into my room before school started on Monday to ask me if I had already heard how Malala visited Pakistan! #worldgeochat
I like students to compare literacy rates to life expectancy. HDI is also interesting to explore. Ss begin to grasp how interrelated all of these are in a community/region. #worldgeochat
We have some nice supports (including an educator guide & service-learning toolkit) if you end up incorporating the film. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/9HmbDDDSld
A4: I have shared photos of schools I have visited around the world and allowed kids to raise the questions about how do kids learn. We talk about what subjects are important.
#TeachSDGs#SDGs#worldgeochat
A4a
We talk about literacy and how many years of schooling children get in other places.
We are talking about Child Labor right now and 1 of the big ideas my Ss are talking about is how working takes away the ability to get an education. #worldgeochat
A4b: If you’re looking for ways to involve your students in the work of the SDGs-begin with you. Strengthen your understanding with the SDG mini courses with @participate. #worldgeochat
Yes. You can get your class established w/ a currently serving Peace Corps Volunteer thru the same site. I did that as a PCV & when I taught. It was great for students #worldgeochat
Once upon a time about 12 years ago I hosted a Chinese food lunch with my high school freshman to teach them about Chinese culture- it worked really well but we had to get permission and follow allergy guidelines. It's doable. #worldgeochat
A4b we are exploring ways to help S’s in South Africa have equal access, we are looking into sponsoring S’s through fund raisers , collecting supplies or funds for supplies #worldgeochat
A5
My Ss get ticked at me sometimes for talking about depressing topics, but what they are just finally starting to realize is that THEY have the power to change that! Better choices, more information, and spreading the word will make a huge difference! #worldgeochat
RT
Q5 – How can we ensure that students leave our classrooms and use geographic skills to help all people have a happy and healthy life?
#worldgeochat
No worries Stewart! I definitely know how that is! Bedtime for my 2 always falls during this chat each week. It doesn't always go smoothly. #worldgeochat
RT
Q5 – How can we ensure that students leave our classrooms and use geographic skills to help all people have a happy and healthy life?
#worldgeochat
A5: Exposure to these tough issues helps students develop empathy. Empathy leads to awareness, which hopefully leads to change! If we can create empathy, we can create change agents. #worldgeochat
A4: Just had a conversation with someone from Nigeria about the lack of books in country. 20-30 Ss share a book. My Ss were interested in getting books there, but need to overcome the cost prohibitive transportation. ANY THOUHGTS? #TeachSDGs#SDGs#worldgeochat
We just got finished addressing cocoa farming in the Ivory Coast. We used materials from the @DBQProject It was a great unit. Several of my students wrote letters to chocolate companies asking that they address these issues. #worldgeochat
A5 Not sure can ever "ensure" it, but have Ss practice geo skills thru authentic learning. Have Ss investigate correlations between geography, public policies, health, & socio-econ, but most critically make sure Ss analyze & "banking" system is not the class norm #worldgeochat
A5: don't be afraid to discuss the "tough" topics bc those lessons must be had & we can provide them w/ a safe space to be honest & then develop a solution!
#worldgeochat
A4a: Quality education is giving students the skills necessary to teach themselves what they need or want to know, but also exposing them to different ideas they have never heard of and guide them on what they can learn from each situation. #worldgeochat
RT
Q4a – How should we define “Quality Education” for our students?
Q4b – How can students take action to ensure every child on the planet gets a “Quality Education”?
#worldgeochat
I ran into the same problem when trying to get school supplies to Colombia. It cost hundreds of dollars to ship a few boxes. There has to be a better way to support our peers in other parts of the world! #worldgeochat
A5: I think in addition to the problems we need to solve through study of #globalgoals, it's also important to explore the beauty. What are we trying to save? Plugging another fave @googleearth Voyager Story: https://t.co/yWWFXWjuXm#worldgeochat
We use the DBQ project materials as well! I decided not to write the whole essay this time and just do sketchnotes, focusing on evidence analysis and bucketing. #worldgeochat
