A2: I remember one really fun project focused on the first sentence of the novel or short story. I wanted Ss to think about how much work might go into the first few words of even the largest manuscripts. We wordsmithed the heck out of some really bad novels. #bookcampPD.

A2- I love using mentor texts to write like the writer. Last year, we made our own There Was an Old Lady Who book. I struggle with using mentor texts to drive their essay and narrative writing though... #BookCampPD
  • LenaTroxtell Sep 2 @ 7:46 PM EDT

#bookcamppd Great Point! Mentor texts bring the ultimate flexibility but also authenticity. Students, look at this actual writing. What do you see?
  • Hahne_Elyse Sep 2 @ 7:47 PM EDT
Writing is more about the words on the page. Writing allows a voice to be heard through reading others’ work and listening to the words flow. #BookCampPD

  • txeduchat Sep 2 @ 7:50 PM EDT
I have actually taught ELLs to write by helping them first learn to tell and make recordings of their stories. When they could hear their own words, they realized the power of writing them down. #bookcampPD.

A4: frameworks & scaffolds are important...shared writing is an important piece of writing and works in unison with workshop, conferring and writing across the content areas...it provides a model, a plan, a purpose #BookCampPD

A4- I am not going to lie. I have long felt that I am my least effective teacher self when teaching writing. In math and reading I know it well and can scaffold on a whim. If I had a framework to help guide students , we could all become better in that area. #BookCampPD

Wondering .... what grade levels did you see represented in the one's you looked at? #BookCampPD
    • ToshMcGaughy Sep 2 @ 7:53 PM EDT
#BookCampPD A4: This is a big emphasis in the book. Each framework begins with suggested content areas where it could be used. ❤️ that it helps teachers see these connections.
  • ToshMcGaughy Sep 2 @ 7:54 PM EDT
#BookCampPD A4: I think these frameworks could actually help content teachers dig into their contehtbttxts with students to then produce content-related writing that is both relevant but also authentic.
  • DrHarrisonMcCoy Sep 2 @ 7:54 PM EDT
A4: Of course, at some level, every course, each content area benefits from students writing and being able to write about their work in those areas. Cross curricular writing projects with collaborative teachers are amazing sometimes. #bookcampPD.

I know in elementary it’s been discussed outside of just ELA. #bookcamppd

A4: a unified structure/framework across content areas makes writing safe for Ss. Safety leads to risk taking, which leads to feelings of success, leads to reinforcement of behavior, and continued practice #BookCampPD

A4 Science writing is inherently different from other types of writing. There HAS to be instruction in how to be a good communicator, because if you can't explain your ideas to other, you are nowhere! #bookcamppd

Our HS Ss write in all subject areas - essays, research papers, reflections, opinion pieces, etc. #BookCampPD

#bookcamppd Well said, friend! Teachers need scaffolds, too! Frameworks help make the steps, the process...clear and explicit for teachers of all contents.
