Here we go!!
I'm Meredith Johnson, your moderator, and I am SUPER excited to begin our #BookCampPD Fall Focus with @ToshMcGaughy as our guest moderator.
Never worry if you haven't already read a book we are discussing, we all learn from each other.
#BookCampPD#bookcamppd Welcome to the new day & new time of #BookCampPD! Please introduce yourself & share where you are from! I'm Tosh from Texas, tweeting from OKC (visiting my Sooner freshman daughter.)
I am SO thrilled to begin a new page in #BookCampPD -my heart overflows from the caring, #PLN members our chat has and excited to welcome those who find this time works better in their schedule! Stickers were created to spread the word far and wide. DM your address to get one!
A1. This question reminds me of the previous book we just completed #BeingtheChange which shared about students writing "Identity Statements." These are written statements of affirmation students share about themselves. #BookCampPD
A1. Also, when we highlighted #FromStrivingtoThriving this chart on page 127 discusses 9 reasons to read more - with "improves writing" being one of the reasons. Writing about what they have read helps clarify their thoughts. #BookCampPD
A1 Writing allows students to tell their story in different capacities. It’s a thought process, a way of communicating, and access to what they’re thinking. Quick writes, stories, and topics vary. #BookCampPD
A1. Allington (2002) mentions Tasks (one of the 6 components of literacy instruction) - "completed individual and small group research projects, and worked on tasks that integrated several content areas (reading, writing, and social studies)." https://t.co/mTE0muWCy3#BookCampPD
A1: Notes back and forth to each other; stop & jots to keep track of their thinking while reading; letters to loved ones & the collection of research when their inner voices shout, “Wow!” #BookCampPD
Hi #BookCampPD! Jori here from Northern CA. I teach high school English and your first question snagged me. My students write for all kinds of real world reasons now that I use #mentortexts. One daily use of writing is to simply reflect on ideas before discussions
#BookCampPD A1: Authentic purposes came from one-on-one conferences with my students. I had to find out what they were passionate about to find out what audience I should help them find.
A1- I am excited to have my students begin writing about their reading. It was also fun this week when some many were excited to share their writing in class. #BookCampPD
I finally worked up the courage to try one-on-one reading and writing conferences with students in my classes of 35 and it was a game changer! #BookCampPD
A2. The whole idea of this book having sample mentor text to help me better understand "writing frameworks" sounds terrific! I have watched as educators struggled with trying to help students become writers for decades. I look forward to ideas from this book helping. #BookCampPD
A2- We read lots of picture books so that I can refer back to what we have read. We also pull a mentor sentence from 1 book we are reading to really pull apart and better understand. #BookCampPD
#bookcamppd Then you will definitely want to check this book out! Mentor texts, real purposes, content area writing, speaking & listening, image literacy...it has it all!

A2: I remember one really fun project focused on the first sentence of the novel or short story. I wanted Ss to think about how much work might go into the first few words of even the largest manuscripts. We wordsmithed the heck out of some really bad novels. #bookcampPD.
A1 My Ss loved writing coming of age stories last year. They'd read Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Book Thief & Catcher in the Rye, so they had a lot of ideas. #BookCampPD
A2: H U G E fan of mentor texts & allowing seasoned, published authors to guide my instruction & my Ss writing...I generally read the book aloud & invite my Ss to “notice” the craft elements themselves before we dive into shared/independent writing #BookCampPD
A2. I needed to understand more about "mentor text" and found this short video https://t.co/v9clqVhu1s that clarified it for me. I thought you might want to click and bookmark to review later? The Brown Bag Teacher's blog post about this https://t.co/p5flEDVtNM#BookCampPD

A2 Mentor texts are huge in all areas. Allowing students to see and notice other crafts is amazing. From introductions to in depth topics, mentor texts are a great resource to utilize. #BookCampPD
A2. Raise your hand if you're excited to learn more about these 27 "writing frameworks" once the book is release on October 1st from Scholastic. https://t.co/6NvnIBBMEd I know I am!! #BookCampPD
The thing I love most about #mentortexts is that you can literally have students write ANYthing! And the real world connections are built right in #BookCampPD

#bookcamppd Yes!!! As I read the advance copy, I kept thinking...”I wish I had this when I was still in the classroom.” Definitely know a bunch of teachers I will connect with this book in October!!!

A2- I love using mentor texts to write like the writer. Last year, we made our own There Was an Old Lady Who book. I struggle with using mentor texts to drive their essay and narrative writing though... #BookCampPD
A3: Reading and listening are the input controls for everything we write. So many ideas for writing some from being and excellent listener and observer of human nature around us. #bookcampPD.
I shared something about how important it is to have text that accurately represent Native Americans. I wish I could put my finger on that resource as it is SO important! #BookCampPD

Writing is more about the words on the page. Writing allows a voice to be heard through reading others’ work and listening to the words flow. #BookCampPD
A3 Writing is more about the words on the page. Writing allows a voice to be heard through reading others’ work and listening to the words flow. #BookCampPD
A3: they are complementary >> one does not easily & authentically exist without the others...inviting Ss to experience the connection between the three is golden ✨ #BookCampPD
A3- I have always struggled to put all three of those aspects into any one "time" of the day. They are all standards and should be woven together throughout the day. I am excited to see lessons designed with that in mind. #BookCampPD

I have actually taught ELLs to write by helping them first learn to tell and make recordings of their stories. When they could hear their own words, they realized the power of writing them down. #bookcampPD.
A3: During our small moment, fable & realistic fiction writing units, I model the “tell, sketch, write” strategy for getting a story on paper...the power of oral storytelling is tremendous...Ss are natural story tellers #BookCampPD

A4 Writing scaffolds can be used in all subject areas. Writing isn’t just in ELA. It has capacities in every subject. Utilizing scaffolds and mentor texts as well as lessons allows for this to be noted. #BookCampPD
A3 We don't communicate in isolation, and often your message will reach entirely different groups when you talk about it, write about it and listen to the feedback offered #BookCampPD
#BookCampPD A4: This is a big emphasis in the book. Each framework begins with suggested content areas where it could be used. ❤️ that it helps teachers see these connections.

A4. Without knowing writing frameworks in "From Striving to Thriving Writers" it is a challenge to respond but I found this article from @edutopia Dr. Alder @WordLib wrote https://t.co/VT60BtPIZ8 It will be interesting to compare/contrast when the book is released #BookCampPD
A4 - Teaching kids to write well can feel like a daunting task. Frameworks offer a safety net for those diving into the world of disciplinary literacy. #BookCampPD
A4: frameworks & scaffolds are important...shared writing is an important piece of writing and works in unison with workshop, conferring and writing across the content areas...it provides a model, a plan, a purpose #BookCampPD
A4- I am not going to lie. I have long felt that I am my least effective teacher self when teaching writing. In math and reading I know it well and can scaffold on a whim. If I had a framework to help guide students , we could all become better in that area. #BookCampPD

#BookCampPD A4: I think these frameworks could actually help content teachers dig into their contehtbttxts with students to then produce content-related writing that is both relevant but also authentic.
A4: Of course, at some level, every course, each content area benefits from students writing and being able to write about their work in those areas. Cross curricular writing projects with collaborative teachers are amazing sometimes. #bookcampPD.
#bookcamppd#BookCampPD Pre-order your copy from Scholastic! 27 writing frameworks complete with mentor texts and clear steps for implementing each in your classroom. Practical, explicit, & based in classroom experience.
A4: a unified structure/framework across content areas makes writing safe for Ss. Safety leads to risk taking, which leads to feelings of success, leads to reinforcement of behavior, and continued practice #BookCampPD

We originally planned to have our #BookCampPD chat with the authors right after the release of this book. Since the current release date has been shifted to October 1st, we decided to provide you the opportunity to learn more about the book so you could share this with others.
With our new day and time some of you might like to receive a reminder in your mailbox about our upcoming chat and which book will be discussed?

A4 Science writing is inherently different from other types of writing. There HAS to be instruction in how to be a good communicator, because if you can't explain your ideas to other, you are nowhere! #bookcamppd
#bookcamppd Well said, friend! Teachers need scaffolds, too! Frameworks help make the steps, the process...clear and explicit for teachers of all contents.
