Dave from MI and a HS Science Teacher. Co-host/Co-founder of #21stedchat with @Edu_Thompson Welcome all. It's back to school tomorrow barring a predicted early morning ice event.
Hola! Justin here! Weird Middle School Math Teacher @ConcordMiddle that may wear dress like an English gentleman one day and Kyle Ren the Next ! #21stedchat
A1 Mine is Focus; I'm going to focus on getting 1% better! 1% better each day, compounded, is 3800% better each yr. 1% worse each day, compounded, means you lose 97% of your value each yr https://t.co/d6otCt9orD#21stedchat
A1: My professional goal would be to continue to work with the same drive and fire that has fueled me since my RCA visit. Great things have been accomplished since then. More to come. One word: Balance. I have to work on the balance. That’s always a challenge. #21stedchat
A1: My one word for the year is New. I want everything I do for my students to feel new and fresh for them, finding new ways to make Middle School Math to be an incredible learning experience for my kiddos #21stedchat
A1: Holding off on major goals for trig now until I’m walking. Wrote my #oneword2019 while still on break. forgot how hard being awesome is on crutches. Disheartening to know that I already set progress back a bit. But I’ll get there. In the meantime, I’ll learn. #21stedchat
A2: IF the teachers aren't well they won't be able to take care of the students in any way needed. Remove the barriers and make them feel important, loved and valued is essential. #21stedchat
A2: To fight isolation and burnout. We just had 12 days of Cheer for the staff where we all would eat together during our assigned lunch and it was refreshing. #21stedchat
A2: It’s important, because we’re human, too. We pour ourselves into other people’s children and don’t forget our own children - pulled in many different directions. As they say, can’t pour from an empty cup. #21stedchat
A2: I feel this is easily overlooked in favor of focusing on Ss , teachers are very easily pressed to breaking point, with all of the often unrealistic expectations placed upon instructors. @ConcordMiddle tries very hard to love on its teachers. #21stedchat
A1 My one word is #Neighborhood. My goal this year is to collaborate with my colleagues virtually and IRL to create neighborhoods of learning...just like #MrRogers! #21stedchat
teaching is a team effort ... we have to be there for each other ... listen and support, but at the same time we have to make sure we are not a contributing factor to other people's stress. #21stedchat
A3. Many schools I work with focus on whole teacher through doing retreats, bringing in fitness/yoga experts for staff meetings and doing challenges such as "biggest loser" or health and happiness challenges" #21stedchat
A3: I would agree with question about , what movement? But would add that I think select educators, admin and individuals in a district are becoming more aware of the importance of caring for the adults in the room. #21stedchat
It is an unwritten rule (for me) that I can go to them for anything. I can talk to them candidly about anything. I’ve been on crutches for 16 weeks. (Unexpectedly) and they check on me and do everything in their power to help me. And that’s how it’s always been.
A3 I'd say I feel supported by admin, especially with freedom to teach how I want to, projects I do, support with parents and students if needed. They do monthly awards, 2 teachers a week are posted and we leave nice comments. #21stedchat
A3 I would love to see “perks” that promote wellness for T low cost gym memberships or better yet a space on the grounds for teachers to workout team meetings that focus on team building and keeping the fun in teaching #21stedchat
A3: I haven’t heard it referenced as a movement, but the district does health fairs. 🤷🏻♀️ I think the support/concern for teacher wellbeing is best seen within individual schools - the overall school culture and the teamwork within the staff. That “family” feel #21stedchat
A3 one school I taught out teachers’ names in a drawing if they had not been absent that quarter and the chosen teacher received a one day off Not dire how long they did that #21stedchat
I would 2nd this sentiment, especially with my current AP, who often pops in to check on my well being, and offers support, and has even brought me a coke from the drink machine during a particularly difficult day. #21stedchat
A4: This may sound terrible, but if I’m trying to recharge, I need to be alone and quiet - not needed by anyone. No “Momma,” “‘Mrs. Hesson,” or “Honey” #Quiet#MeTime#InTheCar 😂 #21stedchat
A5. I use a @icommit30 journal, follow @ToneItUp and use @classpass to try and keep a work/life balance. I am lucky that my job is my passion so when I work, it doesn't feel like it to me. #21stedchat
A5: Audible has become very important to me, listening to books while commuting back and forth to work, also taking walks with my wife through the city has been a great stress reliever and form of exercise.#21stedchat
Thanks for another great #21stedchat next time we meet January 20 we will be discussing: What knowledge, skills, attitudes
