Hi Everyone! I'm Barbara from Oakland, CA co-host of #rethink_learning chat. I'm focusing on a growth #mindset so glad we are talking about that today in our chat starting NOW. So doing my little dance because this is going to be great!!!
A1: In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. Learners with āgrowth mindsetsā believe that with effort, their ability and performance can improve. #rethink_learning
A1: Knowing that intelligence isnāt limited to what you are born with, it is what you make it, intelligence grows with learning, exposure, training, experience, and the mindset that failures lead to learning and growth š #rethink_learning
A1 A fixed mindset hinders growth. Leaves things to biology and genes. There is no engagement. Growth mindset favors learning, engages learners and shows that everyone can learn.
We need to offer more support for growth mindset.

#rethink_learning Amy Valentine here from Colorado. I serve as director of @FoundationBOL -- we give scholarships to kids, grants to teachers, and do research, all in the way of rethinking teaching and learning. Thanks for having me here! š
A2: Characteristics of #growthmindset include open-mindedness, perseverance, optimism, self awareness and the belief in the ability to learn from mistakes! #rethink_learning
A2: Jackie Gerstein @jackegerstein developed a Personal Accountability and Reflection checklist of questions around Growth Mindset along with infographic #rethink_learning
Growth mindset is so important to shifting the way that we teach, learn AND analyze what needs to change and shift in the education system. #rethink_learning

A2 I know several :) People with a #growthmindset are more open to taking some risks, not giving up after mistakes and failures, reevaluating and then moving on, know that they might not be there ...yet #rethink_learning
I really enjoy reading @jackiegerstein 's work and was lucky to get to speak with her at ISTE this year, and she even stayed for my @cospaces_edu presentation, hope to connect with her again! #rethink_learning

A2: Jackie Gerstein @jackiegerstein developed a Personal Accountability and Reflection checklist of questions around Growth Mindset along with infographic #rethink_learning
A2: There is a mindset of how and an absence of a mindset of IF. It is all about the expectations and the notion that success can happen ... IF. #rethink_learning
A2: There is a mindset of how and an absence of a mindset of IF. It is all about the expectations and the notion that success can happen ... IF. #rethink_learning
A2 Someone who has a growth mindset is positive, takes risks, asks questions, shows grit and perseverance. They encourage others and are willing to fail, learn a d try again. #rethink_learning
A1: Fixed= It is what it is...nothing can change it so why try. Growth= Growth can happen and will happen with a little motivation and creativity. #rethink_learning
A2: Yes, and here is how I would describe them: liberated perspective, boundless opportunities before them, the-sky-is-the-limit, non-judgmental, approachable...opens up space. #rethink_learning
A2: There is a mindset of how and an absence of a mindset of IF. It is all about the expectations and the notion that success can happen ... IF. #rethink_learning
A3: I had a fixed mindset about a project I was doing and then realized I needed to adjust my thinking. My one word for 2017 was āYET.ā Itās about not giving up. Itās about using the Power of Yet. #rethink_learning
A3: Setbacks by nature cause us to reflect, having a #growthmindset makes us see the opportunities for new learning and growth from those mistakes š#rethink_learning
A3: Setbacks can create an "I give up" attitude. I guess I was guilty of this, in the moment. I needed to take a step back, reflect and restart. #rethink_learning
a3) I'm thankful for last time I had a setback. I bombed a math lesson. Came back and let a student teacher better than I ever could have. It was learning for me #rethink_learning
A3: Setbacks by nature cause us to reflect, having a #growthmindset makes us see the opportunities for new learning and growth from those mistakes š#rethink_learning
A3: I've had a few setbacks recently but I took control and got in touch w/ ppl who could give me great advice on next steps and what I needed to do to reach my goals - keep plugging away! #rethink_learning
A3: Setbacks by nature cause us to reflect, having a #growthmindset makes us see the opportunities for new learning and growth from those mistakes š#rethink_learning
A3 I definitely considered giving up, and did temporarily, but then realized that I had to do it, and keep going, just needed a break to recharge I guess #rethink_learning
Setbacks are so important. Students must understand that failure is more like practice and not an end result of some championship match! #rethink_learning
A3 Setbacks often make me reflect. I go through my emotions but when I want something I will not let up. I try to build a plan to achieve in another way. Look to my PLN for support. Doesnāt matter how many times you fall, gotta get up again...as the saying goes #rethink_learning
A3: I've had to rethink how to support others especially close family members who have given up. -- had a fixed mindset. I've given Carol Dweck's book, sent videos, but the best is to listen #rethink_learning
A3: My husband told me the best thing is that every mistake or failure we make can be a "Blesson" - a lesson and a blessing. #mindset changed my thinking #rethink_learning
A4: Teach children the power of āYetā in learning there is a processāhelp Ss understand that they havenāt learnd it yet and have yet to learn it, that they are learning on their way to mastery...model your love of learning, model a #growthmindset#rethink_learning š
A4: We live the idea that failure is an expected step towards success. Without it, we wouldn't have a direction to follow in which to grow. #rethink_learning
A3-Setbacks are definitely when you need your tribe to keep you going. Iām lucky to have great teacher friends that are there to help. In the past I would have become discouraged, but I had a great co-teacher last year that continues to be a listening š#rethink_learning
A4: The solution lies in understanding the difference between learning and performing, and then designing instruction that supports both. #rethink_learninghttps://t.co/uYed3pBsb7
A4 I had some signs in the room, we talk about it and I try to emphasize the learning is a process, we will struggle, maybe you cannot do something well, but won't know till you try #rethink_learning
A4-We model that itās okay to fail. That you keep trying and persevering. We have to believe and teach our ss the power of āYETā #rethink_learning
A3: Setbacks are blessings im disguise. they exist to redirect, realign, or to stop us at any given time. This helps ensure that our train is on the right track. #rethink_learning
A4. We learn by teaching and learning from others, prototyping, testing, experimenting. Need time to F-A-I-L (First Attempt In Learning) #mindset#rethink_learning
A4 I try to shift the focus from "points" and :grades" to more about what are you learning, the process, what can you do with that knowledge #rethink_learning
Cultivate a growth mindset ... by giving them the opportunity to learn something worth learning ... maybe the reason they lack a growth mindset is because they have been tasked to learn something not worth learning to them. #rethink_learning
It is interesting. I get so many honors students with a Fixed Mindset. They come to me thinking they are fixed in smart, but with limits. It's not until they struggle that they realize growth and the true growth mindset. #rethink_learning
A4: we need to foucs on learning vs. achievement...want to hear kids say.."I want to learn" or "I want to try" not "I want a 95% on...... #rethink_learning#growthmindset
A4: With every growth opportunity comes the chance to employ this POWERFUL word ... YET.
Yearn
Embrace
Try
Help Ss write YET goals and post them in a high-traffic area in your school.
#rethink_learning#growthmindset

Yes, unfortunately many Honor Students know how to play the game and are compliant. You said it - fixed in "smart" with limits. #mindset#rethink_learning
It is interesting. I get so many honors students with a Fixed Mindset. They come to me thinking they are fixed in smart, but with limits. It's not until they struggle that they realize growth and the true growth mindset. #rethink_learning
A4: When ALL stakeholders including school board members, superintendent, administration, teachers, etc. embrace and value #GrowthMindset...students will automatically grow and learn to discover and be curious! #Culture#rethink_learning#MontourProud#CoreValues
Thank you, Everyone, for a wonderful chat on #mindset! Our next #rethink_learning chat is 3 WEEKS instead of 2 - it is on Monday, October 15th - The topic is #positivity
A1-A fixed mindset is when we settle for how things are. When you have a fixed mindset you donāt think you can change the outcome. With a fixed mindset you know and believe in the power of yet. You to obstacles are learning road blocks to new ideas and growth. #rethink_learning
Yes! Ss perceive school as a performance because, too often, performing is the focus of our instructional design. Instead, clearly separate learning from performing so Ss feel safe failing forward. #rethink_learning
Hello! popping in (hope thatās ok) A4: if we Model what failing forward looks like and show our Ss what it looks like- they will be more likely to share that belief. Take the points, %, and grades away- thatās when they let their guard down #rethink_learning
Promote Growth Mindset by modelling itās ok to make mistakes and encouraging risk and debriefing after all responses, often our most insightful learning comes when we see how others approach and integrate strategies #rethink_learning
A2-Someone that has a growth mindset keeps on trying and sees that with perseverance they can reach their goal. They are positive role models that are cheerleaders to everyone they come in contact with. #rethink_learning
Hi! Kristen here from PA! Iām here because I follow @Rdene915around like a little lost puppy on Monday nights. Speaking of puppies, I donāt even like dogs, but mini golden doodles are seriously the cutest things in the whole wide world!!! And now I want one!!!#rethink_learning
A1: fixed- thereās an end point. You either get there or you donāt. Mainly linear. Growth- learning is continuous, non-linear, requires reflection, planning, goal setting, and never ever ends. #rethink_learning
I speak up a lot, if thereās a prob, Iāll collab w/others for solution, if T needs ideas, brainstorm w/them, was told I intimidate some, it hurt. I stayed quiet, ādonāt ask so many Qsā, but thatās not who I am, So theyāre just going to have to deal #rethink_learning
A2: Theyāre never done learning and always seek others who are different than they are, with ability levels and learning levels to learn from.Always reflecting, making next steps, adjusting, meeting people where they are rather than where they want others to be.#rethink_learning
A2: We are all learners together. If we think like that then Ts can learn from their Ss. If Ts help Ss use formative assessment strategies with them, just imagine the learning that happens. Wow! #Formativechat#rethink_learning
