Q1 Why is it important to be a connected educator?
Thank you for taking time out of your evening and contributing to .
Hi all, Mike 2nd grade T from Southern NJ Coast
A1 Being a connected educator provides you with new ideas, advice, and professional opportunities
A1: There is so much to learn from so many people! We need to stay connected to hear and learn what others are saying
. what kinds of professional ideas?
No doubt that Twitter chats can get one's head spinning. We hope to accomplish that tonight on
. you are right! What have you learned so far?
A1: It is important to stay connected so that you can learn from other educators who have good ideas and strategies
Honored to have you with us tonight on .
A1. Being connected allows for ideas to be bounced off of different educators and get viewpoints from other
Definitely. In age of free, easy global connectedness, learning from others needs to be practiced and modeled to our Ss.
A1 in order to advocate for S's & the profession you need to be connected, to hear & contribute to imp conversations
oh my gosh! My Ss signed up to do a event! What a great way to connected Ts
A1: Being a connected educator has given me opportunities to grow as a teacher (prod, mentorship) and also got me my first job!
other professionals can share with you new ways to present info, use technology, and deal with Ss behavior
A1: Being connected gives you opportunities to share & learn from others and develop a "broad view" as an educator
A1: New ideas and concepts are constantly being created worldwide. We can't possibly come up with all of those ideas ourselves!
thanks for joining us tonight. Thank you for your voice - it is important for our preservice Ts to hear it.
May the fun begin! A1 As an educator, we need to provide as many avenues as possible for Ss to learn. https://t.co/ZWhDd7gCmx
Q1 Why is it important to be a connected educator?
A1 A connected educator is up to date, willing to learn, grow, and model that for his/her Ss.
don't forget to add to your tweets so everyone can read your comments. We are better together
A1 I gain so much from other T's that I apply to my teaching & classroom, I'm inspired to reach for more as a connected educator
Too much to fit in one tweet, everything from teaching methods to simple classroom ideas
Spot on. Providing/allowing multiple viewpoints is a key ingredient in diversified education.
That's the curse of Twitter, isn't it. ;)
that's the best part - mentors across the globe!
A1: It is important because you can incorporate other cultures into the classroom, and find many creative, new ideas from others.
was the inspiration for my class world tour
A1: What I get from being connected - Inspiration. Support (much needed). Collaborative opportunities for my Ss. New viewpoints.
It is but it also shows just how much there is out there to learn from others when we are connected
A1 would you want to be a disconnected educator? The more we connect the more professionalized teaching becomes
wow! It helped you get your first job! That is amazing. Thank you for sharing.
So true! 140 Characters does not provide justice to explain why one should be a connected educator. https://t.co/SLwMTiGeqq
Too much to fit in one tweet, everything from teaching methods to simple classroom ideas
this is great for language teachers - connecting with different ppl across the globe fills my feed with French.
A1 So many reasons: connect with students around the world, meet the students on "their home turf", etc.
A1 being connected means different things to different people, I see opportunities and avoiding isolation
check this out! https://t.co/5ShQO6G4gE
this is great for language teachers - connecting with different ppl across the globe fills my feed with French.
love it! Great ideas here. Keep it up.
Over 10% of all Tweets are ed-related. Would be a shame to let all that amazing knowledge go by without using it to help your Ss.
yup! When I say it, people are baffled. "You got your job through TWITTER!?" (A little more than that, but it was vital!)
A1 I'm connected to on FB, his post there brought me here, it's that simple
right! It gets your name out there
Brilliant example. Being connected makes us all better, and creates all kinds of unforeseen learning ops. https://t.co/nsQ7PIMFwE
A1 I'm connected to on FB, his post there brought me here, it's that simple

Today I learned - at least 10% of Twitter is educational! Now to infiltrate Snapchat. https://t.co/AAtwyE4naA
Over 10% of all Tweets are ed-related. Would be a shame to let all that amazing knowledge go by without using it to help your Ss.

Q2 What are some creative projects that you can do to connect your students in a global way?
yes absolutely. Thank you for joining our conversation tonight.
Statistics shows there are nearly 500 million Tweets daily. Thus, about 50 million EDU tweets per day. https://t.co/pUUwn1qS2R
Over 10% of all Tweets are ed-related. Would be a shame to let all that amazing knowledge go by without using it to help your Ss.
A1 being a connected educator raises your profile, elevates your voice, confirms your expertise, enables you to advocate for S's
Hi Cassie welcome to our chat! Glad to have you here with us tonight.
A2 Skyping with professionals across the world is a way to bring them into our classrooms!
I found a lot of free great tools online like voki and todaysmeet that allow kids from all over to connect with one another
I'd like to explore with Ss and Ts -- reaching into different parts of the world
A2: Mystery Skype, blogging, Twiddla drawing, even pen pals - being a connected educator means more than just being hi-tech!
Those are such great tools!
Our podcast team tries to make global projects fun and easy to do. See our page for examples: https://t.co/iddrcScvTm
A2 In I pair preservice Ts with practicing Ts across the world to create projects for their class.
A2: My school district I attended had a sister school in China which can be a great connection globally for Ss
. yes mystery skype is really neat to do! Making global connections
Sorry I am late. Katy Pre-Service Teacher from PA. Middle Level Math/Science Education
how do/can Ss connect with these tools?
That's crazy! It's amazing to think of how much of our society revolves around education!
it is as much a social learning experience for them but geo fits right in
A2: I've been part of a flat stanley exchange for younger kids. Worked really well!
did you make it last weekend to the summit?
A2 cont. There are amazing micro-communities on social media established purposefully to connect classes. See if you can find 'em!
A2: I have really enjoyed the digital coops we are doing in
they can create online accounts and have teachers pair up with other educators across the world
is growing as well as for immediate communication.
A2: Partner with another class in a different country. Have the students interact with each other via skype, letters, etc.
Use your SM connections to create learning ops for Ss. Let them learn about the world, then empower them to make positive changes.
that is so cool! Can you tell me more?
A2: I would want to set up study groups with quizlet or social media with students in other places covering the same material.
great to have you here! Thanks for joining in!
That's so cool! Even though I grew up with internet, I'm always amazed at the opportunities that come with new tech!
oh yes Flat Stanley is a great way to connect Ss and Ts across the world.
One of the easiest places to start connecting globally is through joint data collection. GDrive and OneDrive make this really easy
A2 use google hangouts, appear.in for read across America we have a new reader ever 45 minutes all day all the way across America
yeah me too! We have a great group!
We partnered with them for various programs throughout the year, even trips!
A2: when I was in elementary school, we did a project were family members sent postcards from all over the country as (cont)
they even have a Global Studies Program where Ss take regular classes with a global perspective
A2 Create a global discussion board, research foreign lands and cultures (what better way than going to the source)
oh yes is a great tool! Thank you for introducing it to me

Care to explain "Digital Coops" to the rest of ?
that is really neat Katie. Thank you for sharing.
A2: (cont) we learned about the states and geography. It was a really cool hands-on way to learn about the states
that is a neat idea! Ss can help each other learn no matter where they are !
a class we connected with in South Africa was doing something with a teddy bear named Jesse
paired each student with a teacher in their content area to create materials for their classroom
nice! That is a great way to connect classrooms.
Definitely add arts into global exchanges. Share songs, artwork, poems, dances. Arts = emotions, which are necessary for learning.
Q3 is coming up in 1 minute! Stay tuned

There's no better way to learn about foreign places than to talk with those who live there. Use Skype/GHO.

VVP is a global valentine exchange where classrooms learn about the students they've connected with in a distant location
Project LINC was project b/t Ss in PA, KS, & Greece where Ss raised $ to provide water filters for kids in Kibera Slum of Nairobi.
Let’s open it up to Qs from the audience. Please ask Qs to !
. wow an amazing project with such a positive global impact.
What advice would you give a teacher who wants to get more globally connected?
How many filters have been provided so far?
Use SM to your advantage. If you will use for pers use, create separate prof acct. Make it habit to learn w/ others.
. my question for you is how did you come up with this idea? Why Valentine's day? Why not Columbus day? LOL
Filter have provided clean water for over 3000 Slum residents so far.
LOL! We try to run global project as podcast team about once per month or so. This one just happened to fall in Jan/Feb.
