#WeirdEd Just note, I've been practically sick all day... Body sore, ear is plugged by fluids for some reason, been woozy, so.... And I had an edTPA lesson planned today!
#WeirdEd I think I heard it briefly in the Tron sequel, for some reason it grabbed me and I looked it up. XD I think I was stuck in a crush going nowhere at the time and it spoke to me that way.... XD
I never thought of using music videos as a way of teaching students about how people are feeling! Defiantly going to incorporate this on Friday for smart-board choices! #weirded#aedu209trolls#autismteacher
I'm Caitlin and I'm not sure how but I once pulled in Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video to educate dozens of Japanese schoolgirls about the American holiday of Halloween. #weirded
Hey, I'm Tania and I'm a student for English in Secondary Education. Michael Jackson's The Way You Make Me Feel is my all time favorite video...first time in here can't wait to see what we do #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd Emma from Texas. I am a university student participating in my first Twitter chat. Unfortunately, I have not watched many Michael Jackson music videos...
No, wait, my fave Michael Jackson video is "They Don't Really Care About Us" because I didn't know it existed for too long, and it blew my mind #weirded
#WeirdEd Thomas Student Teacher in MN. Thriller, it really showcased his dancing talent and choreography.... Those movements...man, they were quite...the Thriller...
Thanks for making us all feel super old !!! ( I kid, but not really, okay yes I do ). ( I had a Michael Jackson lunchbox okay ! And poster ! And white glove !) #weirdEd
Thanks. Also our back porch has been torn up since July. Mr. MIT is doing all of this work himself. Kitchen. Garage. And a few other things. Just had to pay over 1K for a new hot water heater. #weirded
#weirded Morning from Kansas, HS chemistry, I don't know about MJ but there's a Goofy video of 'just eat it' instead of 'Beat it' from my childhood that I remember.
A1: Well since I'm a student, I can'r really say that I do. But when I taught in my daycare I always started the day and welcomed the kid/parents with age-appropriate music. Coulndn't really display the video do well on the tablet #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd A1 I haven't used any music videos, though I'm sure the students would have plenty of suggestions. Admin frowns at such things.
Not real ones, not subject-based parodies either
A1. I have a little stinger of the beginning of the Vanilla Ice video-- "Stop. Collaborate and Listen!" They yell the "Collaborate and Listen" part. #WeirdEd
A1- sadly, the most music videos I play as a history teacher is when a musician dies and they have No Clue who they are so I have to play. Or when a kid wears a Van Halen shirt and has No CLUE who they are so I gotta play one #WeirdEd
A1 - We use music videos in class but not for educational purposes. I would like to incorporate this into my students weekly schedule as an educational lesson. #WeirdEd#aedu209trolls
#WeirdEd A1 No, but I have shown music videos, just to hook in. That Weird Al one from @TheWeirdTeacher blog post seems interesting though. Also, not enough #Hamilton music videos for me to use yet....I'd rather use the more racially diverse than the common white-cast vids
#weirded A1. Just popping in bc I saw it and had to shout out @BabaBrinkman. I show "Genes Eye View" when I discuss cystic fibrosis and genetic disorders
A1: Not yet. Partly because I tend to err on the side of “don’t use anything potentially offensive” as a brand new teacher and partly because I’m trying to survive a rocky first year, so I haven’t started branching out from the curriculum as much as I would like. #WeirdEd
Africa by Toto!! During our Africa unit, I show it to demonstrate stereotypes toward Africa but dang it does the song have a kickin keyboard solo and goofy video....
A1 I've used parodies created by @MrBettsClass (which my students love), & schoolhouse rock, of course - which I think probably counts as music videos.. #weirded
Exactly ! And then it wa the anniversary of Cash and Carter's wedding last week and they had no clue who they were so ....well thank god for YouTube and a projector #weirdEd
A1: My mom used Iron Maiden’s “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” to teach that. Also I learned more from Maiden’s “Alexander the Great” than any book. #WeirdEd
A1: My mom used Iron Maiden’s “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” to teach that. Also I learned more from Maiden’s “Alexander the Great” than any book. #WeirdEd
I haven't used any in an elementary class but we had to dance to this in one of my university classes. Not sure if it qualifies as "music video" though. https://t.co/Ze1nX5AGSC#weirded
Also, I’ve found as I’ve re-evaluated my personal tastes, in looking to incorporate a little bit into my teaching, I have fairly inappropriate for 3rd grader tastes in music, movies and video games. Also, no kids of my own to steer me to that stuff #WeirdEd
Well I definitely wish this was a thing when I was in school. Would have helped while the class was going through 3 different teachers in one semester. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd A2 It's one of those moments when I've seen a lot of music videos and they all kinda blend together and I don't know what the music videos are and....
I’d love for Late 20th Century Cultural Literacy to be an elementary school subject. I’d have the best test scores in the country, aside from all of you fine folks of course...#WeirdEd
I love all of the @okgo videos. The last few years we have made Rube Goldberg machines with my 4th graders and I always show this one. https://t.co/9KVsVt3WoW#WeirdEd
late A1. I've used a dewey decimal song, and got some Ts to use Hamilton songs (don't think they found vids). Used Jimmy Fallon's force awakens medley as Timer alarm awhile back #weirded
#weirded A2 I showed the 'Radioactive' video from Imagine Dragon when we were discussing radioactivity. It is a little crazy but it worked as a transition between tasks. Though, I don't know a favorite.
#WeirdEd A2 So long since I realy watched any. Once upon a time I would've said "Take on Me" (a-ha) just from the tech perspective, which started a trend +
A2: I generally despise music videos (unless Beavis and Butthead are on commentary), but “One” and “November Rain” stick out as being pretty good back in the day. #WeirdEd
A2 Reason why I love Happy is because it kept me calm and sane while I was waiting for a possible cancer diagnosis. 2014. Stage 3 inflammatory breast cancer. #weirded
A2: Beyonce, Formation. Take on Me, A-Ha. Missy Elliott, Work it or Supafly. Sledgehammer, Peter Gabriel. And something by Nicki Minaj, but I can't pick one. Maybe Anaconda. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd A2 Okay, since I can't think up of a specific music video, here's one created by Youtube Voordeel: https://t.co/PTHdFFUtaU
I do like their Star Wars ones. They're not the whole songs, but the colors and the visuals are good.
#WeirdEd A2 Also Billy Joel's "A Matter of Trust" because people swear they've seen me in it. I was outside in the crowd for a couple hours, watched him perform.
#weirded A1 so there's more I've thought of: Queen's "Under Pressure" and They Might be Giants but these are education based but man, that Bloodmobile is fun!
#WeirdEd A2 I could tell you which of the colorful characters walking around in that video were paid, and which were just folks from the East Village who just look like that.
#WeirdEd@slwindisch isn't here, so I'll answer for her and tell you that she LOVES LOVES LOVES all of Lindsey Stirling's videos.
Really.
She does.
Don't tell her I told you.
A3. I vote YES Schoolhouse Rock counts as a music video. It is a song (music) and a video that is educational and personally helped me learn social studies as a child! #WeirdEd#aedu209trolls
a3: Oh, and Most by Eminem, The Story of OJ by Jay-Z, and of course that Rogen/Franco joint where they pretend to be Kim and Kanye. #weirdedhttps://t.co/KfzRkLrp8G
#WeirdEd I love showing OkGo. Great videos to encourage outside of the box thinking. I love the one with all the musical instruments. They have some videos showing how they were made too.
#WeirdEd A3 I guess? I mean there's music and an accompanying video.... In addition, the visuals also help clarify and importantly, connect with the lyrics. Which is another thing I'd like of a music video.
A3: If they do, I need to change my answer to Q1. My kids know the Figure 8 song by heart (of course it’s one I don’t like), and I’m waiting for my thank you from next year’s fourth grade teacher for the amazing fluency with 8s facts. #WeirdEd
A3: Absolutely. Schoolhouse Rock is kind of the archetypal educational music video. All it’s missing is an angsty Steve Perry posing and singing and just overdoing it all gloriously. #WeirdEd
A3: I honestly didn't grow up watching Schoolhouse Rock much in grade school. However, I do believe it counts as music video because it has a voice singing in an educational setting. #WeirdEd
A:3. On flocab... Yes they are music videos. They are educational/entertaining videos. I can honestly say I jam out just as hard to flocab as I do to tenacious d!#weirded
#weirded A3 not much, do they inspire kids to sing and make their own? Though we have the Electromagnetic Spectrum song https://t.co/ctieoTBGHe some kids love it, others don't but it helps them to remember what they need to.
#WeirdEd There wasn't a guy my age in school who didn't know the preamble to the Constitution or how a bill became a law!
And of course, the original Multiplication Rocks songs ...
Side note: that reminds me of the English teacher at my high school who used Billy Joel's We Didn't Start the Fire to label people, places, things and ideas #WeirdEd
Korn is a guilty pleasure of mine. I’ve never not liked any of their stuff. That’s embarrassing to admit, but I feel better having admitted it. #WeirdEd
#weirded agreed! I used an old Bill Nye video that had the "rocks Rock" music video at the end when I taught Earth Science. This is a great resource. Thanks!
I grew up at the time where Nu-Metal was the first heavy music I heard on the radio or MTV. I have a shameful nostalgia for Korn and Limp Bizkit, but they were a gateway drug into some really good, awesome music down the road, so it was not for naught #WeirdEd

@branowar, @TheWeirdTeacher, @MissShuganah
Korn has the guy who drew the Spider Man and Spawn comics do a lot of their art. And Tool took creepy claymation to a whole new level with their video for “Sober.” #WeirdEd
While my oldest brothers were playing Tom Lehrer's albums (which were funny but I wasn't sure why), I was listening to the -LY Song on The Electric Company
#WeirdEd
I had Chocolate Starfish burned on a CD by a friend in Middle School who labled it only with the initials so my parents wouldn’t know I was listening to music with a parental warning on it...sorry @yenneam...#WeirdEd

@branowar, @TheWeirdTeacher, @MissShuganah, @yenneam
#WeirdEd My friends and I were deep into our Metal Superiority Phase at that point. Anything Not Properly Metal was to be shunned and mocked. Except Weird Al, of course.

#WeirdEd A4 I would like to figure out how to effectively use DnD and roleplaying books for creative writing.... I have a few board games/card games I'd like to figure out how to use for instruction.... I know I can make them work for Math...somehow.
A4 Commercials can be a great source of historical perspective - gender roles, political views, etc. (I always watch the infamous "Daisy Girl" ad in APUSH) #weirded
A4. You can use the news if you are in a History class. You can use a movie or movie clip that relates to your theme of your lesson. You can use songs for expressing meaning for something and analyze the lyrics to relate to your lesson. #WeirdEd#aedu209trolls
#WeirdEd A4 Also, If I had watched Coco beforehand, I would've loved to figure out how to use it for myths... Maybe folktales. If I get to the point where I teach Poetry, I'll definitely be using Hamilton, same w/the History part of Social Studies.
#WeirdEd A4: Playing Cards. They are on hand (haha) because I do card tricks and flourishes, but handy for teaching. Also I’ve used clips from movies to discuss how directors use shots and edits to convey a mood or message
A4: The Wreck-it Ralph 2 trailer came out as we were doing persuasive. We watched it a few more times that I was intending, because I’ll always stop for something that my class and I can share a genuine laugh over. #WeirdEd
This is actually a really cool idea. I think for my freshman english class in HS my teacher had us make our own board game with to figure out how to use instructions #WeirdEd
#weirdEd A4 Do my random quotes of movie dialogue and song lyrics count? Or TV commercials?
Get their attention by singing
"Ba da ba ba ba!!!"
And they yell "I'm loving it!"
tl;dr: You tell kids to write a letter to someone they're grateful to, or who is important to them. Then surprise them by saying, now call that person and read this letter to them right now. It's so sweet. #WeirdEd
Oh. Well, as Kid Q said today, "It's annoyingly catchy." The reason why I like Happy has to do with it keeping me calm while I waited for my cancer diagnosis. Also I love watching the plain old people dancing to it. Captivating. #weirded
#WeirdEd A4 We also used the beginning half of Black Panther trailer (y'know b4 the bangs and explosions and brief violence) for our equity conversation about #RepresentationMatters Esp. on how media has portrayed Africa... Can spin off to a good media lit. lesson tbh...
I’ve used Super Mario characters to motivate a kid to learn to form lower case letters. They weren’t interested in writing their own name (yet), but would do anything for Mario. #weirded
His whole book of essays, The View From the Cheap Seats, is a treasure trove of comic book stuff and libraries and pulpy sci-fi and music, and the audiobook is read by him and is a million glorious hours long. #WeirdEd
A4: I use lots of songs to teach literary elements- Swift and Bieber, et al are great choices because it is so obvious and we get great debate about what is good music. Then we can move onto more challenging stuff. #WeirdEd
Second A4. In my class I've used the movie "Inside Out" to help my students understand emotions. Watch the movie in the morning for fun and incorporate it into a lesson for the second half of the day. #WeirdEd#aedu209trolls#autismteacher
And also @TheWeirdTeacher anything that will soothe Kid O's savage breast is useful. She gets very intense after school to the point that her needs cannot be met. #weirded
#WeirdEd I know it could go well w/using characters, bc that's the whole point of starting a game. XD. The templates/archetypes can be a good starting off point, however, it may not be as effective w/o a good Fantasy grounding, but that's just me, personally.
#WeirdEd Ads are specifically designed to elicit emotions. Play the Mean Joe Green or If I Could Teach the World to Sing Coke ads and see for yourself.
#WeirdEd Fact checking, informative essays/work. For really critical thinking, see if certain networks push a certain point of view, message at the cost of other PoVs. How do their POV affect their tone/message, word choice....
I had some fun with @classcraftgame, a World-of-Warcraft-type twist on ClassDojo, where your students are PCs and you can give quests and award skills. It was a lot to keep up with, but it would be sweet in the right hands. #WeirdEd
A4 #WeirdEd I used to love using cartoons. Having kids explain their meaning or significance #WeirdEd is an awesome chat & sounds like a show on Cartoon Network
#WeirdEd Fact checking, informative essays/work. For really critical thinking, see if certain networks push a certain point of view, message at the cost of other PoVs. How do their POV affect their tone/message, word choice....
#WeirdEd A4 ALso, I forgot. I would LOVE to use Comics/Graphic Novels as an alternative to examining written texts for mentor texts. Examining how illustrators use color, picture to set the tone, evoke emotion, show struggles, transitions, etc.. I mean, just read John Lewis March
A4. When you’re a world language teacher, literally everything. We take anything and everything from the real world and call it “realia” or authentic resources. Just a fancy way of saying we don’t like textbooks. #weirded
#weirded A5 remember Vine? I was talking with students today about how I used to use that to have kids show Newton's Laws and Fakebook for Atomic timeline conversations. Both no longer work.
#WeirdEd No prob! :) I figure, we got all these Pundits pushing their agendas (liberal or conservative or otherwise), and why not use that obvious bias to teach critical thinking?
#WeirdEd I tell the ones who think my math comics are "lame" to make some of their own (and use stick figures if they can draw). Or write a rap or poem
I've gotten a couple
#WeirdEd So what you're saying is we shouldn't hang our hats (and books) on specific platforms because they might go away or change?
*significant look to camera*
I don't know if this will help but I think FlipGrid is kind of similar. I haven't gotten a chance to fully use it but I learned it in my education class recently. #WeirdEd
A5. I also had world history students create an issue of a newspaper for a specific day in WWII history. Had to have the event, but also domestic, international news, sports, entertainment, and some ads. #weirded
#WeirdEd I tried doing a classwide "Polynomial News Network" --
"This one's for the bulletin board!" -- but not too many takers, but I did get one video out of it
#WeirdEd No kidding. It’s one of the harder things to accomplish. The biggest challenges are making the game last just the right amount of time and to go through enough iterations of the gameplay to be a genuinely fun experience.
#WeirdEd So, since I can still remember High School, lemme add to Q5... How can we do it so Ss are actually enthusiastic about such non-traditional projects? I remember SocStud raps that were dull, uninspired, and the Ss were really BORED as they sang them....
#WeirdEd You just gave e a GREAT idea. We're reading @OneCrazyRita One Crazy Summer, and the mom's house is green stucco, a metaphor for how pirckly and hard to get near the mom is. Design buildings for the other characters!. Ohhhhhhh yes
I gave my kids free reign to research anything they wanted about culture during the Cold War Years. They thought it was fun and then we got to connect it all to US/Soviet relations in some way. They had fun and minds were blown #weirded
